Pen-pressure control both opacity\flow AND size?

I distinctly remember very early versions of Photoshop (even well before CS, perhaps) in which I could choose a brush that was very valueable to me and that would allow me to control with Wacom pen pressure both the opacity and the size of the stroke. I vaguely remember it had to do with the air-brush icon
I can no longer find such a brush in photoshop.
In all my attempts to play with the options or brush settings, or choosing the `pressure opacity icon` or the `size opacity icon` and all combinations I tried, I caouldn`t find a brush that will allow me to control both, and I remember and know that once it did exist...
In screenshot 1 I show how when choosing opacity pressure control one gets these wonederful soft, cloudy, fluffy, gradient edges but how  even if the strokes seems to grow a bit thinner is actually the same width between the two parallel red lines.
In screenshot 2 I show how when choosing size pressure control one ges these pointy sharp edges and not the cloudy gradients of the previous example
In screenshot 3 I attemp[t a simulation - An artificial representation of the look and feel of that brush i`m referring to, long lost to me, that has both soft edges and can still be reduced to a thin line at the same time.

Conroy, the point you bring up is important, thank you.
The fade size and flow stroke would give the exact effect I`m looking for, if it could only be truly controled and did not impose a set and limited effect, in the sense that the stroke cannot be either lengthened, dragged,or modified in any way. It`s mere existence indicates that such an effect is still doable within the photoshop visual language.
If only I could find how to be able to get such an effect for actual drawing...
The loss of this ability spells a great handicap in my ability to use Photoshop.
I think that all I needed in ancient versions was to click the airbrush icon and I would have it, but now clicking this icon seems strangely to yield no visible effect, which is also a tell-tail sign by itself, don`t you think?
I wondoer whether other Wacom users are having the same problem and whether they are not too, suffering tremendously from the inexplicable dissapearance of that ability.
I`m currently using a 12WX Cintiq Wacom tablet, always with the latest drivers.

More information about the pen issue on the Helix. I talked with Lenovo tech support today and they had nothing to offer in the way of a solution. In fact, the tech I talked with did not have any info that this was a problem. His only advice was to reload the drivers which I have done to no avail.
I have made adjustments in all of the Control Panel pen attibutes and in the preferences menus of most of the drawing programs, all without good result.
I have seen lots of threads for the Surface Pro that complain of exactly the same issues spelled out here - lack of pen pressure sensitivity with Photoshop, SBP and Painter (and PaintTool). I found this tweet from an MS person:
@barbbowman@panos_panay@surface@Windows yes we are actively working with Wacom now, it should be soon. This was posted on the 12th of February.
I also saw  posts about Skectchbook Pro (SBP) having its own drivers which, when the Win8 pen drivers are removed or disabled, enable pressure sensitivity on the pen within that program. Don't know if this is relevant.
Many people say this is an Adobe issue, others say a MS issue. Clearly Lenovo has build a machine that CAN do pen pressure sensitivity (as evidenced by the outstanding sesitivity in Fresh Paint) but which is being hindered by the lack of consistent and/or usable drivers either in the OS or in the individual programs.

  • Vaio Duo 11 pen pressure unsupported?

Hi, I've just bought Sony Vaio Duo 11 i7 edition with Windows 8 Pro, but I found pen pressure isn't working on neither Photoshop CS5.0.4 or Photoshop Elements 10, while its pen pressure works on Fresh Paint and Artrage 3.5.5. Can anyone help?

Hi, one of the posters from the "N-Trig Tablet Not Recognized" thread there. I figured the matter was settled and I just needed to have some patience when Chris assured me that somebody was "working on Lemonade recipes" as it were, but I simply must interject after seeing HiDPI support getting completed today:
New Photoshop Features and Team Version Headline Major Update to Adobe Creative Cloud (the announcement)
New MacBook Pro Retina Display Support (blog post for background)
Really? Wikipedia says that the "MacBook Pro with Retina display" came out on June 11th, and the HiDPI announcement was released on December 11th. Six months exactly? That is seriously an amazing ability to make deadlines. (Everybody, take note - no matter what Adobe says, they can do things in a timely manner after all!)
Now, I have to point out that one of the things the blog post said was that a staggering 2,500 icons needed to be drawn, in addition to other engineering work. That is a ton to have to do, and it sounds like it was a modern-day miracle for it to be completed in such a short amount of time.
I think my next words must be so obvious that I could probably click "Post" right here and still get the message across anyway, but I'll spell it out: Three years? Your product teams could move mountains in six months for Apple users, but a digitizer that was ubiquitous in 2009 and is practically the Windows 8 flagship today couldn't be tackled in three years?
I can just imagine that poor lemonade-making engineer, sitting alone in a dark cubicle for three years, struggling and flailing to make N-Trig work with no luck at all, eventually developing clinical depression. (Don't worry, I'm not actually crazy; I assumed nobody was seriously working on the problem back then, although I did hope that work would eventually happen if people were patient and polite.)
To quote commenter Tom U from this article (it ranks highly in searches about the Adobe/N-Trig debacle, despite not actually being about that at all), "According to N-Trig it’s Adobe’s Problem, according to Adobe it’s N-Trig's problem. Neither one cares that it’s your problem. And they would both like to deny there IS a problem, so rest assured that nobody is fixing any problems." Couldn't have said it better myself.
For one last quote, I defer to the aforementioned Adobe blog post. "At Adobe we work hard to support the latest innovations. We will continue to release security patches, bug fixes and support new hardware changes, like HiDPI display support, to all of our customers outside of our regular development cycles just as we have always done."
Haha, okay guys. Whatever you say.
I said it three years ago, and apparently I have to say it again - if Adobe fixed this, they'd stand to gain some massively good PR with artists all over the world, who would love to buy a shiny new tablet for the holidays but feel they can't because of this issue.
I myself would love to buy an Adobe product this time around (seeing as all of my Adobe software is rather old and due for an upgrade), but other than the lack of Adobe support, the Duo 11 is perfect for me. I don't expect it to compare feature-wise in the least, but I'm willing to put up with IllustStudio if it means that I can get 90% of the functionality for 10% of the fuss. But I don't want to have to do that. Why compromise when you can have Adobe, a company which reliably makes some of the best software on the planet?
If anyone at Adobe can see which way the wind is blowing, it should quickly become obvious that (1) N-Trig is only going to keep growing; (2) N-Trig is not fixing it (not in any useful way - that makeshift Wintab patch of theirs was a joke); (3) there are a whole lot of people who really do believe Adobe will fix it, not because it's their problem to fix, but because Adobe is just so awesome a company that they take responsibility for things even when they don't have to. Other companies would kill to have that kind of customer loyalty, you know?
By the way, since the idea of having to cripple Photoshop's user experience to make way for N-Trig's defects was a sticking point last time, I'll take this moment to point out that we don't care if there's a few features missing, we just want it to work at all. Put an obnoxious warning every time the application loads that we're using a bad digitizer! Just let us have that option, pretty please.
We want that. We want to pay you for that. Please?
Just spend a few hours on the Internet and you'll find thousands of potential sales from people reluctantly making do with N-Trig compatible software, saying things like "Well, I guess ArtRage is kind of okay, but I wish I could be using Photoshop." What sane person would turn those sales down?
I get it. I really do get it, okay? Adobe's a relatively old company in tech terms, people are set in their ways, and the idea of sucking it up and doing something unpleasant like supporting a cheap lazy digitizer such as N-Trig would leave a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths.
But please, I implore you, if any of you aren't snobbish about things like that - if there's any new blood in the company at all - please try to convince your managers that this would be a good idea. For us, the customers who want to like you but sometimes find it rather difficult, this would be a big deal.
You have the chance to be the "bigger man", as it were. That's it. Period. Doesn't matter if N-Trig should be handling it, or Microsoft, or anyone else. You can be the bigger people here. You can be the grown-ups, and gain a lot of relatively low-cost advertising as a result. Please actually consider it this time around, okay?
It seems crazy to me for Adobe to have spent so much sweat and blood creating versions of their software for iPad and Android tablets, while they've been actively fighting tooth and nail for a very long time (since before those platforms even existed!) to avoid fully supporting the Windows world's version of the same.
In summary, if you can do one thing, why not the other? If you can write entire software suites for new devices, why not this? If you can meticulously repaint 2,500 icons for a bunch of yuppies, why not this? It's not like the demand isn't there. It is, in droves. So please, carefully and seriously consider supporting N-Trig, and please pass the idea along to the proper brass instead of letting it die here on the forums.
Even though you don't have to, it would mean an awful lot to an ever-growing number of people if you did.

  • Mail returned in different font and size

    Hello,
Sometimes my mails are returned in a different font and size (usually Times 12px) from the default I have set (Arial).
I know this is a "common" problem but don't know the cause?
    Thanks

You don't really have control over what font and size is seen by recipients of your emails, and even less over what their mail system does to fonts and sizes when it composes a return.
The important thing to remember is that Mail > Preferences does not send any font info to the recipient. To do that you must set the font for each message separately in the New Message pane. If the recipient also has html mail enabled, then they will most likely see the font and size you have chosen.

  • Pen Pressure on Monoprice tablet

So I'm trying to get pen pressure to work in Adobe Photoshop. I'm running Windows 8, PS CS6.
Most answers provided say to update driver but mine is up to date. Pen pressure works fine in ArtRage and the Test panel of the software settings:  http://i.imgur.com/763J1hW.png
But in Photoshop all I receive is a thick line with no response to pen pressure. Any idea on how to fix this?

I've been to the monoprice drivers on their website and installed their tablet 'complete' pack. Unzipped and installed yet no changes. Would you say it was just down to having a knock off tablet?

  • Mpeg 4 speed and size

    Hello,
I created the same video with about 45s in premiere elements 13 and cyberlink power director 13.
The codec in both cases is H264. The codes speed is 5 minutes in premiere and 1.5 minutes in director.
The resulting size is 80 MB (mkv) with director and 180 MB (mp4) in premiere.
The original (mov) video size was 114 MB.
For me this seems like premiere is doing something wrong. Both in speed and size.
    But what? Is it modifiable?

    Hi:
Are you exporting directly from FCP? I would try creating a self contained movie same settings first and then use that movie in Compressor.
    Hope that helps !

Eraser tool in Photoshop CS4 acts as if it is transparent when on brush or pencil mode. Block acts like its not transparent at all but there are no options for opacity, flow or brush size. Whats wrong and how to I make the brush and pencil eraser erase completely without having to go over it multiple times?
It started randomly about two weeks ago and I thought it was a glitch that would just go away. But now I am getting sick of using only the block eraser on one size. Help?

The easiest thing to start with is to reset the Eraser Tool.
Right click on the Eraser icon in the tool options bar and then click on Reset Tool.

  • Controlling brush darkness with intuos5 pen pressure?

I just bought a pressure sensitve tablet (wacom intuos5 medium).
I want to set it up so I can practice "charcoal drawing" in photoshop without the mess. Specifically, I want the pressure to control the darkness of the brush tool, from very faint to completely black.
So, in the brushes window, I enabled "other dynamics" and set the flow control to pen pressure. It works but not very well. It's hard to draw a faint line, and faint lines appear to be made up of discrete circles.
I also try linking the opacity to the pen pressure, and set flow to 100%. This work better for faint lines, but I'm unable to draw a completely black line. It seems the opacity maxed out at about 40%. I don't want to apply too much pressure lest I break the tablet.
Is there a better way to set this up?

To avoid the visible circles you may have to reduce the Spacing (and subsequently maybe reduce the overall Flow).
Could you post screenshots of your settings and the resulting strokes (ideally applied tio a Path with »Simulate Pressure« checked, so allow for comparrison)?

  • Change Cursor Size with Pen Pressure

Does anyone know of a way to make the paintbrush cursor size change dynamically according to pen pressure with a tablet?
I'm coming to Photoshop from GIMP, and in GIMP when you use more or less pressure on the tablet, the cursor icon automatically changes size based on the pressure so you know exactly how large a line the tool will draw.
In Photoshop it seems you can choose "normal" or "full size" for the cursor circle, or else use crosshairs, but there doesn't seem to be an option for a dynamically shaped cursor. Am I wrong and just missing something? Or does Photoshop really not have this feature?

When you press and hold Option/Alt  + Control  and Left mouse click and drag nothing happens?
(the button on your pen is set to left click?)
The Option/Alt key should always be the second key to the left of the spacebar
The Control key should always be the third key to the left of the spacebar

  • I have Wacom Intuos 4, and for some reason pen pressure isn't working with PSE 10

I can still use wacom tablet pen to draw in Photoshop Elements 10, but I am frustrated because I could not get lines thinner and thicker with more pressure I apply with the pen like I could with Photoshop Elements 7 - and I had already checked "size"  in the tablet setting in PSE 10.  I also made sure I set up my Wacom Tablet Properties to apply to Photoshop Elements 10, and I still can't vary the lines like I want.   Any suggestions?  (also, could it be because I unwittingly bought and installed  34 bits PSE 10 in my 64-bit computer with Window 7  - is that what is preventing PSE 10 from making lines thin and thick with pen pressure?)
    Thanks for your help.

photodrawken, I went to Wacom website and looked up the latest driver.  I see Driver 4.60 for Windows -- will that work on my 64 Windows 7?   (The information didn't mention which Windows, but did warned not to install it on Window Vista 64.)

  • CS4 and pen pressure problem

When drawing with the brush or the clone stamp brush now and then strokes are drawn at full pressure even though that is not the case. The next strokes are ok again for a while and then again... a few strokes like they there was no pen pressure. Very annoying when retouching masks.
I already installed the latest Wacom driver but no joy.
    What else could I try?
My graphics card doesn't have OpenGL capacities so I don't think that's the problem or could it?
Also CS4 is much slower than CS3 in updating the screen. Related?
    Tips welcome...
I am a long time user of Photoshop (since 2.5) but I think CS4 will be the first upgrade I will skip although I love the new adjustments and masks panels...
Windows XP Pro, 4 Gigs of Ram, Matrox Millenium card, plenty of sratch disk space.

I had exactly the same problem with my Wacom Intuos 3 tablet.
The solution is to go into Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Device Manager>Human Interface Devices and disable Wacom Virtual Hid Driver.
I found that somewhere on the Wacom site and it does it for me.
I'm not sure but I think it started when I updated the Wacom drivers to try and solve another problem.
Can I ask, if you press CNTRL-ALT-DEL to start task manager, does that disable your pen until you select the Task Manager button? That came with the latest driver too.

  • My problem is that after printing the first photo or picture, when I come to print a second, both the Colour Management and Epson Colour Controls are greyed out and showing No Colour Management

I have recently purchased a Mac computer (updated to Maverick) to go with my Epson Stylus Photo RX500 printer which has given excellent service with my old Windows computer. However, when trying to print pictures or photos via Photoshop Elements 11, the best results I can get are using the Colour Management and Epson Colour controls in the printing options box.
My problem is that after printing the first photo or picture, when I come to print a second, both the Colour Management and Epson Colour Controls are greyed out and showing No Colour Management, The only way I can reset the controls is to shut down the printer and computer and restart.
Could there may be a setting somewhere that I need to adjust please?  I have been in touch with Epson and they say that the Epson Colour controls are part of the Photoshop Elements software but a post on the Adobe forum brought no results and I am unable to contact Adobe.
    <Edited by Host>

Hello Garry. Thanks for the reply. I guess I should have used a different title from "How do I post a question?" That should come after trying to resolved the colour settings first. However, to answer your question, after experimenting with all the different settings in Photoshop Elements and Epson software, I now start with PSE11 Colour settings then click "no colour management" then after clicking Print, I choose "More Options/Colour Management/Colour Handling/Printer Manages Colour" then I choose "Page Setup/Layout/Colour Matching" which then shows Epson Colour Controls but I also choose "Layout/Colour Management" which then shows "Colour Controls/Mode" I then of course choose an Epson printer profile depending on the paper I am using. I get good results but as I said, the Colour Matching and Colour Controls are then greyed out. Hope that makes sense.
