Pen tool - can't see handles

Hi, I'm hoping this is a really simple enquiry.  Basically I'm tracing a photograph using the pen tool.  When I release the mouse to use the 'alt' key to drag anchor point in, I can't see the handles.  It never used to be this way.  Any ideas?  Thanks

Just restarted Illustrator and it seems to be ok now - must be a glitch of some sort because this is happening intermittently.
By the way just found a great site for photoshop/illustrator etc. cheat sheets:

  • Ctrl not working with Pen Tool - Can't move shapes or paths

I have Windows 8 and Photoshop CS3. It works fine, but I accidentally must have messed something up earlier tonight, because holding down Ctrl (when using the pen tool) suddenly won't let me move shapes or paths. I work a lot with vector graphics and design so I've ALWAYS held down Ctrl after closing a path and then moved it around on the canvas. The cursor turns black when I do this. Now, it's white and tries to select nothing? If I click directly on the path, it just alters the handlebars. And the Move Tool tells me I can't select anything.
This is what it looks like when I hold down Ctrl when using the pen tool and try to move my path. I cannot select it.
Please help me, I have a project due and the only way I can move my paths or shapes now is by clicking ctrl+t and it's very annoying.
    Thanks in advance.

What you describe is how it works with one of the Shape Tools selected in the toolbox.
With the Pen Tool selected, one presses the Ctrl key, drags around the path to select all the points and then click and drag on one of the sides (not one of the points) to move the whole path.

  • Pen tool -- can't toggle any of the points

Hey guys, I need some help with the pen tool. i am making my anchor points but anytime i click on them to try and alter the points, i cannot. i see the toggle lines attached to the anchor points, but they disappear, which isnt allowing me to make changes. i have worked on illustrator  before and have used the pen tool. other times, the pen tool allows me to draw out my images, and allows me to see where all the points are when i select the lines. it does not, now.

    Stella,
I believe you were using the Direct Selection Tool for that.
Or the Convert Anchor Point Tool (flyout from the Pen Tool at ClickHold).

  • [CLOSED] Burning tools can't see blank DVD discs

    Hello.
Something strange is happening lately. Burning apps can't see blank discs. It doesn't matter if I have cdrkit or cdrtools installed - neither works.
Graveman hangs on start when blank DVD is in tray.
Brasero doesn't see my device and allow only to create ISO images.
cdrecord -minfo fails, with empty DVD-R present in tray:
    sudo cdrecord -minfo

Is there anything I can do?

It's supposed to be in kernel, right? Besides, it was never necessary for me to install external driver, months ago burning DVD discs with tools using cdrkit/cdrtools/dvd+rw-tools wasn't a problem.
I even though that lack of libdvdread package was causing this... but having it installed doesn't help either (as expected - it's just for DVD-Video discs).
    EDIT: I've also tried dvd+rw-mediainfo /dev/sr0 - doesn't work.
cdrecord have no problems recognizing empty CD-R medium, so it's happening with DVD discs only.

  • Pen Tool -- adjust an existing handle length without changing its angle?

Is it possible to adjust an existing handle's length without changing its angle?  The reason I want to do this is because the companion handle (for a smooth point) in my path-in-progress happens to be exactly where I want it, and I want to constrict my adjustment of the handle on the path's open-ended side to the length only.  Possible?  Seems like a sure candidate for a modifier key..  but alt is for making corners and shift constricts to only specific angles.  I want to do this on the fly.
If no, I suppose I'll go make a feature request

If you do this and other handle manipulations frequently, a 3rd-party plug-in might be worth buying. The PathScribe tool (part of the VectorScribe plug-in) can do this plus a lot more.

  • Using pen tool to draw a particular shape...

    Hi all,
I'm pretty new to Illustrator and just wanted some advice.
I'm using the pen tool to try and draw a specific shape () but finding it hard trying to 'smooth' out the points where I connect my lines.
The pen tool can't draw this all in one go, so when I try to do it in several stages, the lines don't connect up smoothly so it looks a bit... rubbish.
Anyone got any tips or how to do this simply? Sorry if this is a total idiotic question but, I'm trying...!
    Cheers

    Somehow your picture won't show.

  • Why can't I see the pen tool?

Hi - I'm using the latest Adobe Premiere Pro but when applying a mask I have the option of the ellipse or the 4 point polygon, but no pen tool...any idea why?

You sure you have the latest version?

  • Lost bezier handle on closing path with pen tool

Can any of you please instruct me how to avoid losing the first point’s backwards bezier handle when closing a path with the Pen Tool?
This is a longtime annoyance for me, but I cannot rule out that I simply have failed to find the proper way of turning off this behaviour.

    I just did!
See my last post with the picture. I rotated not just the anchor point but the straight line that it was coupled to.
    Steve.
Steve, you can rotate anchorPoints and adjacent straight segments all day long, and you will still not be replicating the behavior and intent of FreeHand's Connector Points.
We're not talking about rotating straight segments here. (I would hope that everyone knows you can do that.)
Forget rotating things. Draw a path with a curved segment and an adjacent diagonal straight segment. The straight segment has no extended handles; only the curved segment does. Now adjust the length of the handle of the anchorPoint that joins to the straight segment in such a way that you cannot break tangency of the curve with the straight segment. In other words, the handle is always constrained to the angle of the adjacent straight segment.
Don't bother coming back with the workaround of scaling the handle. That still does not ensure tangency.
Example: This is Fontographer (FreeHand's progenitor). The highlighted point at the bottom of the motorycycle's skid plate is a Corner Point. The segment to the left of it needs to be curved, while maintaining perfect tangency with the straight segment to the right of it. In the inset, the Corner Point has been converted to a Tangent Point, and its handle is being dragged out (all with one selection tool, I might add.) The handle cannot be dragged out at any angle other than that which is tangent to the right segment.
That's just an example of converting a pre-existing Corner Point to a Connector Point. But now consider ensuring tangency fluidly as you draw with the Pen. In Illustrator, click to place a CornerPoint. Click or clickDrag to place a second anchorPoint oriented at any angle from the first point such that you are guaranteed that the first segment is straight, and that the next segment will be curved and tangent to the first segment. Can you do that in Illustrator?
While we're at it, note that in FOG, as in FH, you always know what kind of point you are dealing with. Corner Points are displayed as squares, Curve Points as circles, and Connector Points (Tangent Points in FOG) as triangles (regardless of whether their handles are extended or retracted).

  • Ai Beginner, Can I make the pen tool function like it does in Photoshop?

I have been using photoshop to do various things over the last few years, and I am trying to move over to Illustrator. The biggest problem I have already is the function of the pen tool in Ai as opposed to Ps. I have to select an entirely different tool to move points? I can't just hold control and move the point? Is there a way that I can make the hot keys and what not function like the pen tool does in Ps. Why the change in the first place?
    (Also, I am using CS4)

A feature request maybe? But then there's no-one from Adobe listening out there anyway, so what's the point?
That's not at all true I have made many feature reques and had quite a few realized. Although one of the bestones was killed.
But if you make a feature request the right way and you give a good argument for it they will look at it and see if they think it is practical for them to implement.
The key is practical and a really good reason for the feature.
And I do know from experience.

  • Pen tool, handles missing?

I was wondering why some points made with the pen tool have handles (to adjust curves) and other points don't have handles. I need to curve a couple points but they can't be adjusted, just moved, anybody know why?

The points with handles are know as Smooth points and without handles Corner points. To add handles to a Corner point click and drag on the point using the Convert Anchor Point Tool. To remove handles from Smooth point click once on the point.
The Convert Anchor Point Tool can be found grouped with the Pen Tool.

  • Fw Pen Tool Bugged - Can't Create Points w/ a click

So I don't use Fireworks much, but am trying to start. Am I wrong in thinking that just CLICKING somewhere on the canvas with the Pen Tool should add a point? Because it's not happening for me. The only way it adds a point is if I click and drag - which always creates a curve with handles. In Photoshop and Illustrator just clicking on the canvas creates a point that you can continue. What could be the problem?
I've tried restarting my Mac, trashing Fireworks' preferences, fiddling with the mouse/touchpad click settings, ... nothing seems to work. And I know it can't be the Mac itself because this function works in AI/PS. Do I have something accidentally enabled that doesn't allow you to create a bloody point? I can't even believe I have to post on here for such a simple task.
    Any help would be appreciated...

Re-installing Fireworks seems to have done the trick.
Just posting this solution for the rare few that may ever have this problem... I have no idea what was wrong, though. I actually couldn't click ANYTHING - the zoom tool didn't work either unless I clicked and dragged.
Scratch all that, re-installing had no effect whatsoever.
The problem is with a program I have running, SweetFM that plays music from Last.fm. There seems to be some sort of conflict between it and Fireworks! So yeah... don't run SweetFM while using Fireworks, I guess.

  • Pen Tool: Removing handles

when you create a line with the pen tool then add an extra anchor point, how do you move that point without the handles creating a curve.
    Can you remove the handles?
I just want jagged angles like an ekg machine.

Make it a habit to keep one finger on ctrl and one on alt while working with the pen tool.
Ctrl temporarily switches to the direct selection/path selection tool (whichever is the active one). Alt switches to the convert point tool.
This lets you move and modify any point and any handle as you go along.

  • Pen tool handle question: clear one handle only

I feel pretty comfortable with the Pen Tool; however there is one small question that I haven't been able to solve.
If a point has 2 handles, how do I get rid of just ONE handle? I can kind of do it by dragging the handle to the anchor point, but it is still there, to drag out again.
I read that Opt-Clicking (I think) the handle will do it, but that does not work for me.
    Thanks,
    Sonny

    Sonny:
I don't think that you quite understand what the handles are indicating:
    No Handles = a Corner Point;
Two handles (that move in concert) = a Smooth Point
Two handle which can move independently) = a Cusp Point
Option Click on the end of a Smooth Point's Handle to make the Point into a Cusp Point.
Option Click on the Node of a Smooth Point or a Cusp point to make the Point into a Corner Point.
Option Click on the Node of a Corner point to make the Point into a Smooth Point.
The Handles are there to help you use them to shape your Paths.

  • How can I get the Fireworks pen tool to disengage from an open path shape (and stay disengaged)!

I am so frustrated! I can't get the fireworks pen tool to disengage when I am finished creating an open path shape (double clicking the end-point isn't working).  The only way I can disengage the pen tool  is to click on a different tool, BUT ...if I do that (i.e., click on a different tool), and then go back to the pen tool (with the intent to create another open path shape), the pen tool automatically engages the last point of my prior open path shape ... and ... no matter what I do, I can't get the pen tool in Fireworks to stop doing this with my open path shapes.
If anyone has any helpful advice, it would be much appreciated!
    Thank you!
(note: I prefer not to have to go back and forth creating open path shapes in Illustrator then bring them into Fireworks, but if all else fails, I suppose I'll have to as a work-around.)

Have you tried holding the Command key and clicking away from the last point? The Command (⌘) key will bring up the Subselection tool; clicking on the canvas with it will allow you to disengage from the path. Once you release the key, the Pen tool will return and you can begin another path.

The video I am watching this guy is just dragging every line to make curves.  And every anchor point is a corner.  He is not switching back and forth between the pen and the anchor points tool, and he is not using the convert points tool.  He draws a curved line and starts another straight line only to curve it with a click and a drag.  It is super efficient, and I could save a world of time if I could figure out what he is doing.
