Pen Tool in PhotoShop CS3 VERY Slow

I just installed CS3 on my laptop and am trying to use the pen tool to draw a path. I have to wait between 30 seconds and 2 minutes for each point to show up. Needless to say it's impossible to create a curve because I can't see the path. I'm using PhotoShop CS3, Windows XP Professional on an IBM Thinkpad T42. I'm not using a tablet, although I do hve one available to use.
Thank you for your time.

As usual could be a variety of things depending on your system. Try a search for "slow tools" to see some of the posts. Here is one on slow pen drag.

  • After Photoshop CC 2014 update - Photoshop is very slow (Windows 7)

After updating today to the latest photoshop cc2014 Version, Photoshop starts very slow and is not useable.
    I updated from V. 2014.1.0 to 2014.2.1 20141014.r.257.
Starting Photoshop Needs 6 minutes (before 1.5 minutes). The menue and button reactiontime is more than slow, you cant work with this Setup.
Is there a Problem with the new release?
And please Adobe, dont tell me, my System has a problem. Did only an update on the CC2014 Suite via creative cloud. Old PS Version (2014.1.0)runs great.
After testing a few time, I recovered my System back to Version 2014.1.0 with Windows recovery and Photoshop works good again.
So whats wrong with the new release?

The CC 2014 update  2014.2.1 is a month old and ACR 8.7 is two days old.  Something strange is happening to you.  First try resetting your Photoshop Preferences. This is a Adobe Photoshop User forum your not dealing with Adobe here. You seem to think you are and your attitude seems like you not open to to possibility that your system may have a problem. I think you may have one..

  • About Using Magnetic Lasso Tool In Photoshop CS3 Extended

    Hi All
I seem to be having a problem using the Magnetic Lasso Tool In Photoshop CS3 Extended as when I get half way around an egales beak zoomed in at 66.67% and start to single click around the tight corners the photo is covered over with a white background and the palettes to the right of the Photo e.g. layers, channels, paths becomes white to and all you can see is the paths that the Magnetic Lasso Tool has made around the beak until you click any key on the keyboard but the annoying thing about doing that is that the path automatically becomes selected there for I am unable to draw the paths around the rest of the beak does anyone know of a patch of some kind that will correct this error?
Many Thanks For Reading This And May Be Replying To it.
    All The Best. Regards,
    Oliver
P.S I have downloaded and installed all of the updates for all Adobe and Adobe CS3 Software.

    Oliver,
We have the same exact issue here with the Polygonal Lasso tool. Get anywhere from 20-80% around an object and it hiccups once and then locks up for a moment causing you to loose whatever you've been selecting.
Symptoms include toolbars and palettes turning white and screen freezing for a moment.
Is there an official word on this from Adobe? Or better yet, a solution?
    Thanks,
    George

  • How can i change the color of pen tool in photoshop cs6?

I want to change the color vector of pen tool in photoshop cs6?

Just to make sure we're communicating properly...
Is it that while creating a path you want the thin lines, handles, etc. to be a different color?
Or is it that after you create your path you want to stroke it with a color?  It IS possible to stroke a path, and even to have an automatic Layer Stroke on a path that's any size/color shape you want.  Example:

  • Photoshop is very slow in lion.

This is the only problem -so far- that I face with Lion. All other apps are working fine and I like some of the features of Lion. BUT:
Photoshop is very slow. I tried disabling font preview. It helped a little but the overall experience of Photoshop is SLOW.
I'm stuck : I like the features of Lion but long for the speed of SL !
Can you help Apple .. Please!

Did you update PS CS4 to 11.0.1?
Also using this guide will help speed things up. It is written for XP and Vista. But if you follow the rules for Vista then it will work with Windows 7.

There are several guides to speed up windows 7 too. Much to do with turning things off running in the background. (Same as Vista).

  • True or False about the pen tool in Photoshop?

Since Photoshop is mostly a raster image program,
and the Pen Tool is better for vector drawing in vector programs,
the Pen Tool is virtually useless in Photoshop, even if you want to
    outline and mask something.
I always thought it was easier to use the paintbrush.
The pen tool in Photoshop is just silly.

    Buko:
Don't be silly. I use the pen tool all the time (for cutouts, as a tool, text on path, you name it). Read post 17 -- 75 hours a week for four months cutting paths. Only cutting paths. A client that wanted the path between the dark and light pixels in the USM halo. The psychological damage is probably starting to surface now.
I understand how paths can be useful. I also wonder if their usefulness might have run its course. The reason I used paths 10 year ago was that I **had** to use paths. Don't you use them less for your mag now than you used to? Aren't you a big proponent of PSD outlines? In my workflow I find less and less of a need for them. But I make Medicaid brochures. It would be great to hear from some folks who use vector masks and need them for x reason.
    I'm having trouble visualizing x.

  • Photoshop CS5 Very Slow Liquify

I've noticed that in Photoshop CS5, Liquify just works terribly slowly. When I click and drag to distort an image, the image gets distorted sometimes even 10 seconds after I've lifted my hand. Sometimes I have to wait 30-40 seconds for the distortions to happen before I can regain control of Photoshop.
Also, panning is a bit more choppy than in CS4, which annoys me a lot, as it was the case with CS4 compared to CS3, etc... I predict that panning in CS7 will look like a slideshow.
And another thing, when you Flick-Pan, and release the mouse, the canvas flies across the screen, and during that flying animation, in CS4, you could still zoom in and out with the keyboard. In CS5, you have to wait until the canvas has slowed down to a stop to be able to zoom. This is also a strange feature.
Adobe said CS5 will have performance improvements, and I can see filters, adjustments and brushes perform a tiny bit better, but basic things like panning, zooming and liquify got MUCH worse and less responsive, and this is not worth the tradeoff for me, since I use these features very frequently, many times a second.
I use a Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet most of the time, and I noticed that Liquify is much faster (although still too slow for me to use it) when I use my trackpad instead of the pen.
I'm using the Photoshop CS5 trial now, and I have Photoshop CS3 and CS4 both installed on the same computer, so I can tell that CS3 ran much faster, CS4 was a bit slower and CS5 is a LOT slower. I'm using a late 2008 15 inch Unibody MacBook Pro with 9600M / 9400M graphics, 4GB RAM and 2.53 GHz CPU, and speed gets a bit better when using the 9600M.
    Here are my questions:
Has anyone else had any of these problems, especially Liquify?
Has anyone else used CS5 and noticed that Liquify runs just fine?
Does anyone have any suggestions of what I could try to cure any of these problems?
Is it possible that this is the way Photoshop CS5 should run on my computer, due to my hardware limitations and bloated software?

How long is it going to take to fix this liquify problem?? Come one guys I need it to work now and better than in CS4 not worse!!! Otherwise why did I spend almost 1K to upgrade???
Looking into the problem isn't enough!!! I need a solution since I use the liquify tool for almost 99.9% of my images (fashion/beauty photography retouching).
Is there a temporary fix??? using the CS4 liquify plugin into the CS5 software?????
do  a google search on slow liquify and see what comes up..... still pretty nice and insecure requests for the reason why it is so slow because users think it is their machine (computer) but if I don't get an answer and fi very soon (couple of days at the most) this nice and insecurity will vanish for a HUGE ADOBE *** kicking campaign !!! Since photoshop is known for their arrogantly slow updates for their software and waits till the next big update to correct things....I am not going to wait 18 months for you guys to fix the liquify problem!!!
SO GET TO IT NOW!!!!! So I can do my work and make enough money to keep spending on adobe upgrades!
And as a side note...didn't you "wizzards" have enough time to discover this BIG problem beforehand?? Or were you to busy fighting with Apple about your huge Flash problem??

  • Photoshop suddenly very slow

Can't crop pictures. Too slow. Both desktop and laptop are doing same thing.
Rcently installed CS6 on two machines.
    All updates installed.
    No viruses detected.
    Laptop  - Windows 8/CS6 8GB RAM
    Desktop - Windows 7/CS6 8GB RAM
When I crop a photo the task just hangs. The green progress bar hardly moves.
There never used to be a progress bar when I cropped a photo. It just cropped the photo, real fast.
Adobe Customer Service not very helpful so far.

  • Illustrator CS3: Very Slow Open, Very Slow Save

    Hello all,
I just recently have been issues with Illustrator CS3. Up until about a few weeks ago, it had been running flawlessly. Now, whenever I try to open up any EPS or AI, Illustrator will literally take at least a minute to open it. This happens with a complex 2mb AI files, but also for a tiny simple files consisting of a 1" square on a blank artboard. No matter the file size, it will take around a minute to open it up.
    Opening a 44kb .eps: 75 seconds
    Opening a 210kb .ai file: 67 seconds
    Saving a 76kb .eps: 56 seconds
Export to grayscale PNG: 66 seconds
Export AI Layers to SWF Files: 2 seconds
    This is ridiculous.
Saving is the same issue. It takes a ridiculously long time to save even a blank document.
It's not my machine (2x2.66ghz Intel Mac with 5gb ram, OSX 10.5.6). Photoshop feels a little sluggish too, but not to this extent. InDesign, Flash, Dreamweaver, Acrobat all run perfectly. I even uninstalled all the CS3 products and reinstalled to find the same issues. And now that I've been given a time sensitive job, I need to get this program running quickly again.
I'm not sure what I can do to solve the problem, aside from trying to reinstall OSX and start fresh. Any and all help is appreciated! Thank you!

Well, I reinstalled Mac OS X before even trying those methods. It was less of a hassle than I thought it would be. Solved the problems with Illustrator. Everything is running fantastic.
But, I was just working in Photoshop, opening about ~20-30 small PNG's at a time to resize, grayscale, etc. I opened up about 60 at once to make things go quicker. They all opened up, with a little bit of lag. Now, if I even try to open up 10-15 PNG's at a time, they load very slow, like the problem I was having before with Illustrator...
Is there anyway to reset some memory settings? Or clear some cache? I believe this is what caused my issues with Illustrator before (opening too many files at once.)

  • Firefox CS3 very slow (on Vista Home Prem. 64 bit)

Firefox CS3 is running very slow on Vista Home Premium 64
    bit.
New Gateway AMD Phenom quad-core (2.3 Ghz quad) with 8 GB of
    Ram.
The rest of the CS3 suite works fine, but there's a delay
every time I do anything in Fireworks.
I upgraded from 4 GB of Ram to 8, thinking that might make a
difference. But the problem remains essentially the same. I've
gotten all Adobe updates, but nothing seems to solve it.
Originally, I thought it was a matter of having other programs open
that was bogging it down. But even when it's the only program open,
    it runs slow.
I was wondering if there are some other settings I need to
change, or what... The last Macromedia version of Fireworks ran
much faster on my XP system with less power and Ram, so this just
    doesn't make sense...
    Any tips are appreciated. Thanks!

    64 bit? Umm...hmm.
First, other people have mentioned problems with FW CS3 on
Vista compared to either running on XP or other CS3 apps on Vista,
so you aren't alone. Unfortunately, nobody seems to be able to pin
down the conflict. Possibly AV, but (if I remember correctly) the
other person who posted about FW CS3 being slow didn't see an
improvement when he turned his AV off.
You might try turning off Aero for Fireworks, that helps with
the bitmap tools. If it's some other conflict, then it's going to
    be a matter of experimenting.
I'm running Vista Home Premium 32 bit, and I don't notice any
trouble with FW CS3 (well, except for the bitmap tools, which I
don't use so I haven't bothered turning off Aero). My AV is NOD32,
though, and it's one of the smallest, most nimble AVs out there.

  • Photoshop CS6 - Very Slow Brush Speeds...

    Hi:
I thought CS5 was bad, but brushing with CS6 all brush strokes are very, very slow. If I make a brush stoke I have literally have to put my hand on my chin and wait for the brush to catch up. I cannot work like this. Any suggestions on what to do to speed up the brushes? Forget about adding anything else to Photoshop, please work on speeding up exisiting functions.

  • Type Tool in Photoshop CS3 Extended

    Hi!
I just recieved my copy of Design Premium CS3 package from Adobe. I noticed that when I activate the Type Tool, Photoshop crashes or uses a long time to activate the tool.
I got this problem on the BETA version and thuoght it was a bug that would be fixed in the final.
Is this a bug or is it just my mac?
Got a macbook (Intel Core Duo 2Ghz).
EDIT: This is only first time I activate the type tool everytime I start Photoshop

I too am having same problem with Photoshop CS3 crashing every time I select the type tool on PowerBook G4 1GHz 1Gb RAM w/ 10.4.10. I have cleaned font cache, checked for font corruption, repaired permissions, tried other user accounts (including root), blah blah blah. CS2 version worked fine with type on same day that I removed it (following Adobe removal instructions to the letter) and installing CS3 Premium default. Fonts are all default install for Tiger and I haven't "installed" any others. I use Suitcase Fusion and everything is patched up to the hilt. I am in charge of I.T. at a large group of companies and have well over a decade of previous experience managing various prepress entities. I understand the urge to blame user error, unfortunately this time I am the user. We have 10 CS3 users here using both PPC & Intel, as well as Winblows (not a typo). For those condescending posters, please READ what these users are saying. There is an actual problem here. Besides, user shouldn't have to wear a propellor hat, you do a default install of Tiger and CS3, you ought to be able to set a line of type, period. Especially at these prices. I am getting ready to go deep on this one, if I figure out anything worthy of posting, I will holler back.

  • Photoshop CC very slow to open after Win 8.1 upgrade

    Hi guys.
I was wondering can you help me. I have tried extensive google searches with no real conclusive answer. I recently upgraded from Win 8 to 8.1. Since the upgrade Photoshop CC is very slow to open. It can take 1-2 minutes to boot up fully. Lightroom 5.2 & bridge open fine. I have a pretty fast system with i7 3.4Ghz Processor & 32Gb of Ram with the OS running on a 256Gb SSD Hard Drive. PS CC booted up fine on Win 8 but not anymore since the upgrade. The only plug-in I run is OnOne Photosuite 8. I have even tried disabling loading extenions at start up from the preferences menu but it makes no difference as it can stil take 1-2 minutes to open. Any help appreciated??

There was a Photoshop update that corrected a problem Adobe had accidentally introduced with a link that went to a network resource that is not available for anyone outside Adobe.  But that was a while ago.  See:  Re: Photoshop CC startup slow (much harddisk access)
I've had Win 8.1 all along and never had an update cause a slowdown.
Unfortunately problems that go away on their own often return on their own.  I hope that's not the case for you and that it continues to work properly.
