Pen tool nib sensitivity

Photoshop CC pen tool nib is erratic, can I adjust the sensitivity?

What make is the tablet? If Wacom, then there will be a setting for this in Wacom Preferences, and I would suspect other tablets have a similar feature. But you shouldn't have erratic sensitivity, which is more likely to do with driver problems. So make sure you have a the most up to date driver for the tablet. If this does not help, and it is a Wacom tablet, go have a look round the Wacom forums.

• Pen Tool: Anchor Below Nib

I've been practicing with the pen tool using three different source texts (K.Eismann, CS3 Classroom, Web) and I've altered the pen setup that now the anchor points are setting at the base of the nib instead of at the point of the nib. The pen and options are correct and I've checked CS4 cursor preferences. Futzing doesn't work either; never does, only wastes time.
Please help to correct the Pen (My) behavior.
Your aid has always been direct and true; thanks for past rewards.

Futzing
—Verb phrase
3.
futz with or around with, to handle or deal with, esp. idly, reluctantly, or as a time-consuming task: I spent all day futzing with those file folders.
After two days, this problem has been solved and after 22 hours of pen practice I find I need more practice. Believe it or not, Restarting Photoshop cured the Anchor problem.

• Pressure sensitive pen tool for flash

Hi! !
Well i'm new to this forum. What I need is a
pressure sensitive pen tool plug-in for flash,
which will be very helpful for me in my animations.
pls reply

No such plugin. All you need is a pressure sensitive tablet.
Then in Flash, select the Brush tool. Then click on the
little tapering line at the bottom of the Tools pallette to turn on
pressure sensitivity.

• How to use pen tool to adjust audio levels

Hi,
I've been using the pen tool to adjust the audio levels in FCE. When I do, however, I get curved line segments (kind of like a parabola) between the audio keyframes. I'd like to get something easier to control... i.e. straight line segments. Is this possible? How would I accomplish this?
Thank you!

Add a couple more keyframes and adjust them so the line is straighter. You can drag the keyframes along the audio line & move them up & down to adjust the shape of the curve.
The default shape is curved in order to align with what the human ear considers a 'normal' change in audio levels to be. Human aural sensitivity to changes in audio levels (aka loudness) is not linear - it is more or less logarithmic in shape. That's why the curve.

• Pen Tool vs Tablet

I've been using Photoshop for a long time, but I'm new to Illustrator and Flash. I feel like I should learn how to use Illustrator before I tackle Flash, but one of the biggest obstacles is the pen tool - what a pain in the butt!
An art school student told me I can simply substitute an electronic drawing device (e.g. a Wacom tablet) for the pen tool. Is that true, or would using such a device carry some sort of liability?
If a drawing tablet is a good way to go, what size should I get? I'm not yet familiar with various brands, but the Wacom/Intuos appears to be most popular. However, it's very expensive, and I don't have a clue what size to get. I assume a 9 X 12 device would be the best choice if I wanted to trace a picture measuring 9 X 12 inches. But could I instead get a tablet half that size, copy half the picture, then copy the other half and paste the two halves together in illustrator?
To put it another way, what size is most popular with web design professionals?
Thanks.

Mordy, Doug:
David is confusing AI's Pen Tool with a stylus, due to the bad advice he received from some dolt who impied to him that one is a substitute for the other.
David,
I'll try again:
Forget all about whether any given user likes or doesn't like stylus pointing devices.
Historically and currently, in vector drawing programs like Illustrator the primary drawing "tool" (feature of the software) is generically called the "pen tool". Specific programs may call it the "Bezier Tool" or something else, but it's long been the primary interface element for accurately drawing Bezier paths. In short, the Pen Tool is the heart-and-soul of a vector drawing program. You need to use it, regardless of what kind of hardware you are using for your computer's input device.
Ever since stylus input devices first appeared with so-called pressure-sensitive features, various programs have provided additional and/or modified software features to take advantage of it.
That started in raster (paint) programs, which added the ability for the width of their "paintbrush" features to be controlled by the pressure input of a stylus.
Later, vector (draw) programs started doing something similar, adding features which involved closed paths being drawn with varying "widths." Those are usually called "brush" features. Other vector features can also be modified to allow some of their settings to be modified on-the-fly by the pressure button of a stylus. Examples of that include some of the settings when using Symbols, or a "brush" tool like Illustrator's recently-added Blob, etc.
But none of that pressure-sensitive stuff changes the fact that the software pen tool is still the
primary tool for drawing accurate Bezier curves, point-by-point. And the pen tool doesn't have any pressure-sensitive or stylus-targeted features, because the whole purpose of the pen tool is to draw paths deliberately, accurately, and economically, point-by-point.
So you can
use a stylus while using the Pen Tool (software) in Illustrator, just as you can use a mouse while using the Pen Tool in Illustrator. Either way, you still need to learn to use the Pen Tool, because it is still the heart-and-soul of every mainstream vector drawing program, including Illustrator.
So the art school student who led you to believe that using a stylus input device somehow obviates the need to learn and to use Illustrator's Pen Tool has given you a
very wrong impression.
All the praise or criticism of stylus input devices in the world doesn't change that. Drawing paths point-by-point is the
primary way to use vector drawing programs. That means using the Pen Tool, and that means using it whether the object in your hand is a stylus or a mouse.
So get yourself a Wacom 6x9 Intuos tablet because that's the only way you're going to find out if you like using a stylus. You may love it so much that you never touch a mouse again. Or, it may end up just collecting dust until you get over the thought of throwing away (or giving away) somethning you spent a significant chunk of change on. But regardless, get busy learning Illustrator's Pen Tool, because you're going to need it either way.

• LACK OF FULL PEN TOOL FUNCTIONALITY WHEN CREATING A SHAPE LAYER

Hello, I'm going through Chris Meyer's video course on being an AE apprentice and have spent over an hour on the following issue.
Here is what I know.
I know I am trying to create a shape layer, not a mask, to create a frame to surround the video of the green field on the attached screenshot. Therefore, I pressed "F2" to make sure I am doing so.
I want to define the borders of this picture frame by using the pen tool to draw a path on the layer entitled "Windy Peak".
I have highlighted that layer in my timeline.
This video was pasted on to a placeholder shape that I had created using Command Option "/" on my Mac.
I do have limited use of the pen tool, because it displays properly when I hover it above the borders of the video to be framed.
But I lack access to the toolbar controls I want to complete my assignment.
For example, I would like to create a gradient to define the internal coloration of this frame, but I have no use of the eyedropper when I click on the Color Picker.
Also, I am unable to access or manipulate any of the standard fill or stroke options for use of my pen.
This is what I know.
Thanks for your help! Matt
Message was edited by: Matt Dubuque to add the fact that the video had been pasted on to a placeholder shape image by pressing Command Option "/" on my Mac.

Thanks for pitching in Todd and Rick, I appreciate it very much.
As previously stated, I do have use of the pen tool, but it only has limited functionality as demonstrated by the path I created on the green meadow. My Tools Panel remains activated .
My core problem remains that I am unable to adjust the fill or stroke settings for my pen.
I have tried changing and resetting various work spaces and this has not helped.
I'm scratching my head here.

• Capture with new MBP, plus Pen Tool Question...

Good Day everyone, I've searched the forums but have not been able to find my answer so I thought I'd post.
Question 1...
I've just received my new 17"MBP a few weeks ago. With my old PB, I would connect my camera via FW400 and capture the footage to an external LaCie drive via FW800 out of the computer.
Now with only one FW port on the MBP, it looks as though I need to capture via FW800 (4pin to 9pin) and go out to the LaCie via USB? Is this correct? How are any of you doing this. It bums me out that I can't go out FW800 to the drive. I suppose there is always the option of getting an Express Card 34 with FW800 connections?
Question 2...
Why can I not get my pen tool to work in the timeline? I want to adjust opacity and audio levels but am unable to do this. My old version of FCP (v5) seemed to let me do this. Overlays are 'on'? Any suggestions? I find it easier and faster to be able to do these functions from the timeline, there must be a way?
FYI...
New 17" MBP 2.66 w/4GB RAM
FCP (Studio2)
I'm sure question 2 is just something stupid that I just haven't set up.
Appreciate everyone's help as always!
Rene.

To be honest, nobody but Apple knows what Apple is thinking but usb is not a good alternative. I also don't know of too many professional post houses or broadcast studios that have anything to do with firewire infrastructure at all. You can get firewire 800 to firewire 400 adapter cables for cheap, search the internet. You can then daisy chain your camera/capture device in line with your storage device.
The better alternative is to get a express firewire card for your MacBook pro as you mentioned which would create two firewire buses; one for capturing, one for storage. Again, you can search the internet and here's a place to get you started http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sonnet%20Technology/FW800E34/
I guess I would have thought maybe some research into a product of the expense of the MacBook Pro would have warranted some research about these things.

• How can I get the Fireworks pen tool to disengage from an open path shape (and stay disengaged)!

I am so frustrated! I can't get the fireworks pen tool to disengage when I am finished creating an open path shape (double clicking the end-point isn't working). The only way I can disengage the pen tool is to click on a different tool, BUT ...if I do that (i.e., click on a different tool), and then go back to the pen tool (with the intent to create another open path shape), the pen tool automatically engages the last point of my prior open path shape ... and ... no matter what I do, I can't get the pen tool in Fireworks to stop doing this with my open path shapes.
If anyone has any helpful advice, it would be much appreciated!
Thank you!
(note: I prefer not to have to go back and forth creating open path shapes in Illustrator then bring them into Fireworks, but if all else fails, I suppose I'll have to as a work-around.)

Have you tried holding the Command key and clicking away from the last point? The Command (⌘) key will bring up the Subselection tool; clicking on the canvas with it will allow you to disengage from the path. Once you release the key, the Pen tool will return and you can begin another path.

• Problem creating vector mask with Pen Tool

Using Photoshop CS5, Mac OS 10.6.8
I'm trying to create a simple vector mask using the pen tool to create a curved line at the top and bottom of a photo. Here's what I'm doing:
1. Create a new layer and select it.
2. Select Pen tool.
3. Choose "work path" by selecting button at top menu.
4. I draw my shape with the pen tool.
5. Now comes the problem... I can not select this shape, or assign it a color. When I create a clipping mask, it does not recognize my path. When I throw away the layer, the shape is still there in outline only. What am I missing here? I'm familiar with doing this in Illustrator, but I don't understand how it works in PSD.
I need some help, please.
Thanks.

The main thing i use paths for in photoshop is extracting objects from photos.
Other uses include stroking paths with the paint tools. For example, if you had
a powerline to remove, one could trace the line with the pen tool and then stroke
the path with spot healing brush set to content aware fill.

• Photoshop CC - Making the Pen Tool on a new layer?

So I've never had this problem in previous versions of PS. When selecting the Pen Tool and drawing on the document usually leads to it making a new shape layer. However for some reason this option is greyed out in CC. As a workaround I've had to draw a shape box, then draw with the pen tool and delete the shape box afterwards. Is there a reason for this, a bug or something I'm missing?
Thanks

It should not be grayed out Pixels are grayed out.

• How to select a shape from pen tool for paint bucket

I was under the notion that I could make a shape with the pen tool and if I closed the the shape it would then be selected in a way that would allow me to color the interior with paint bucket.
However, when I splash the paintbucket inside my shape, it paints the whole layer, not just the part inside my shape.
Obviously I don't understand how it is supposed to work.
Apparently I've gone at this the wrong way.. I want to create a freeform shape, that once created will be a selected region in the same way a rectangle or elips would.
What is the best way to do that? I'm shooting for thought bubble sort of shape, something along the line of the outline of an egg, but with a tail at one end.

Added tips from Tip Merchant ($200 consulation fee)
- on mac - command/ numeric keypad Enter turns the path into a selection. Option delete then fills.
- an action can be setup to bring up Fill Path from the Path panel menu. Just pressing enter fills with FG color
These are ways to avoid he paths panel altogether. Best way may be to use the TINY fill path icon in that panel as was pointed out by John

• Pen Tool Troubles

I should probably start by saying that I am a novice PS user. Yesterday I was using the pen tool, for a school assignment, to trace around parts of a picture in order to make a vector illustration. It was working fine for a while, but now when I click to start a new shape, it immediately closes that shape, and the next click opens another layer. In other words, instead of being able to draw a line, every click is seen as the start of a new shape, and opens a new layer. I tried restarting PS, restarting the computer, resetting the tools. I don't know what to do next. It's possible that I accidentally clicked on something, somewhere, and changed a setting I should have, but I have no idea what. Also, it happened within an hour of my trial period ending, and signing up for CC Photography. Might that have anything to do with it? Can someone please help me? Thanks.

Never mind. Of course, the minute I make a desperate post is when I finally figure out what the problem is. Apparently it had something to do with the fact that I was trying to create a new shape while inside an existing group. Once I selected a folder instead of a layer inside the folder, it started working again. Why Adobe would design it this way is beyond me, but at least I can continue with my assignment now. Thanks anyway. :-)

• Pen Tool and Pathfinder Problems

Help.....I am trying to follow a tutorial creating a leaf vector image(first time) I use the pen tool to draw the curve in a an elipse shape and then divide in pathfinder but it always adds an extra line when I hit the pathfinder button from the last pointto the first and fills my path instead of remaining as one line that I can remove from the shape...anyone help please.

This is a link to the tutorial....http://vector.tutsplus.com/tutorials/text-effects/creating-an-environmentally-friendly-gre en-type-treatment/comment-page-5/
It is part 3, divide. The image shows what happens after I hit divide in pathfinder, prior to that it is just a single line path with 2 anchor points using pen tool from left to right. I know its basic but its frustrating as helland I am sure its a simple fix!. Thanks so much for looking

• Pen Tool Question...

The Pen Tool is my favorite / go to selection tool. But can it do the following...
I've made a path and converted it to a selection, then filled the area with a color or texture (on it's own layer).
Now I find that I need to adjust (fine tune) the shape I've created / filled with color or texture to better fit how / where it's being used. Is is possible to invoke the path handles and get it to adjust the filled area as you move / adjust the path. (This is not a shape, not using the shape tool.)
I can select the filled path / layer and free transform but that does not give me a fine enough adjustment.
Puppet Warp doesn't really fit the bill either.
A good example of what I want to achieve is similar to when you put type on a path. When you adjust the path the type moves to conform to the changes in the path. I want to do the same thing with the area I filled using the path.
Possible??
If not, this would be a great feature request!!!
thanks folks for any input

Just to follow up on your answer....
Yes this works very well for what I'm trying to accomplish.
Thanks again.
Just an fyi, I'm also a NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals) member.
I posted my same question on the NAPP forum. I still haven't gotten a response for anyone over there.
I'm not knocking NAPP, it's a great organization and I've been a member since 2006.
But I'm pleased with how much faster answers to questions come from this Adobe Photoshop forum.
Keep up the good work!!
