Pen tool question for curve lines!

hello illustrators.
i watched this 1 minute tutorial:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YuBcgJv6OM
and this guy is making a nice curve, but whats the tool his changing to?im aslo adding like he is a point in between the line, but when i try to make
a nice curve, instead im getting a triangular looking line.

Hmm... But i don't think he has trouble adding anchor points, he has trouble with the handles of those anchor points he's already added, because he said that in order to pull handles out of that anchor point, he had to switch to the Convert Anchor Point Tool, and the guy in the tutorial simply adds the anchor point and the handles are already there.

  • Capture with new MBP, plus Pen Tool Question...

Good Day everyone, I've searched the forums but have not been able to find my answer so I thought I'd post.
    Question 1...
I've just received my new 17"MBP a few weeks ago. With my old PB, I would connect my camera via FW400 and capture the footage to an external LaCie drive via FW800 out of the computer.
Now with only one FW port on the MBP, it looks as though I need to capture via FW800 (4pin to 9pin) and go out to the LaCie via USB? Is this correct? How are any of you doing this. It bums me out that I can't go out FW800 to the drive. I suppose there is always the option of getting an Express Card 34 with FW800 connections?
    Question 2...
Why can I not get my pen tool to work in the timeline? I want to adjust opacity and audio levels but am unable to do this. My old version of FCP (v5) seemed to let me do this. Overlays are 'on'? Any suggestions? I find it easier and faster to be able to do these functions from the timeline, there must be a way?
    FYI...
    New 17" MBP 2.66 w/4GB RAM
    FCP (Studio2)
I'm sure question 2 is just something stupid that I just haven't set up.
    Appreciate everyone's help as always!
    Rene.

To be honest, nobody but Apple knows what Apple is thinking but usb is not a good alternative. I also don't know of too many professional post houses or broadcast studios that have anything to do with firewire infrastructure at all. You can get firewire 800 to firewire 400 adapter cables for cheap, search the internet. You can then daisy chain your camera/capture device in line with your storage device.
The better alternative is to get a express firewire card for your MacBook pro as you mentioned which would create two firewire buses; one for capturing, one for storage. Again, you can search the internet and here's a place to get you started http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sonnet%20Technology/FW800E34/
I guess I would have thought maybe some research into a product of the expense of the MacBook Pro would have warranted some research about these things.

  • Pen Tool Question...

The Pen Tool is my favorite / go to selection tool. But can it do the following...
I've made a path and converted it to a selection, then filled the area with a color or texture (on it's own layer).
Now I find that I need to adjust (fine tune) the shape I've created / filled with color or texture to better fit how / where it's being used. Is is possible to invoke the path handles and get it to adjust the filled area as you move / adjust the path. (This is not a shape, not using the shape tool.)
I can select the filled path / layer and free transform but that does not give me a fine enough adjustment.
Puppet Warp doesn't really fit the bill either.
A good example of what I want to achieve is similar to when you put type on a path. When you adjust the path the type moves to conform to the changes in the path. I want to do the same thing with the area I filled using the path.
    Possible??
If not, this would be a great feature request!!!
    thanks folks for any input

Just to follow up on your answer....
Yes this works very well for what I'm trying to accomplish.
    Thanks again.
Just an fyi, I'm also a NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals) member.
I posted my same question on the NAPP forum. I still haven't gotten a response for anyone over there.
I'm not knocking NAPP, it's a great organization and I've been a member since 2006.
But I'm pleased with how much faster answers to questions come from this Adobe Photoshop forum.
    Keep up the good work!!

  • Is the "pen" tool available for this product?

I am after a tool that lets you draw a line/curve between two points, is this or a similar tool available for this product? And where can I get a list of ALL the core tools?
    Thanks in advance!

My suggestion would be to join the Developer Network. This would give you full access to the LiveCycle product suite as well as an easy to install "sandbox".

  • Pen Tool Questions

Hey gurus, I am trying to digitalize a friend's sketch and am running into a few issues.
    1) Every time I start drawing a new path with the pen tool, the fill is black and there is no stroke. This is a problem because it starts to cover up the path I'm trying to trace, so I have to select the unfinished path with the selection tool and then remove the fill and add a stroke and then find my place on the path once again. I'm sure there's a way to change the default, but I have not seen it.
    2) Some of my connection points are a little jaggy... If i'm getting some jagged edges, does that mean I'm using too many points? Or is it just a matter of endless tinkering with the handles to get it perfectly rounded/smooth?
    Thanks!

One thing I would recommend is to change your default Graphic Style. It might make your work go a little faster if outline mode isn't working for you.
    1) Select the object with the fill/stroke combination you want to make the default. In my case, I have a shape with a pink fill and no stroke.
    2) Open the Graphic Styles panel by clicking the icon highighted below, or by going to Window > Graphic Styles.
    3) Click on the New Graphic Style button in the Graphic Styles panel. You will see a new swatch appear.
    4) Hold the option key, then click and drag the swatch you just made over the current default swatch, as shown.
Now, if I have an object that isn't filled with pink, I can simply select it and hit the D key.
    I hope this helps!

  • Pen tool question again

I have a G4 running 10.4.1. Trying to use use Illustrator10. First issue is screen redraw when I scroll. The more I scroll the lighter the screen image until it goes away. The only way to get it back is Command +, - . The second issue is the pen tool. Sometimes (most time!) I need to adjust the only way to make the points active is to use the "convert anchor point", do a Command Z then I can use the direct selection tool on all points, they are active. Sometime that doesn't work either. Can anyone tell me what's going on? and what to do about it. Thanks so much!

You know if you want to make your life a little more productive and though it is expensive you might upgrade the computer as well as the application expensive yes.
If you can't afford a Mac there is a Mac clone out there that is very reasonably priced.
You can load Mac OS X on it.It is intel based.
But you probably want to upgrade. It took me a while and though I have my Mac Intel for 2 years only I think it might even be tie for me to take advantage of the possibility of the 64 bit applications for CS5. It would work on my system but I would like to experience the real power of it with an up to date system.

  • Cs4 pen tool not selecting previous line style

When I used the pen tool in CS3 I could select any line style (mostly arrows) and be able to make new line wih that same style. In CS4 it just creates a black line each time with the same thickness.

In the Appearance panel, click the flyout menu (Upper right) and uncheck New Art Has Basic Appearance.

  • Using the pen tool question

How do I stop the pen tool from wanting to add to paths under what I'm trying to draw when it touches another anchor point?

Ridiculous as it is, in Illustrator you are actually supposed to:
    1. Mousedown some distance away from where you want the new path to begin (away from the endpoint of the unselected pre-existing path).
    2. Press and hold the Spacebar.
    3. Drag to where you want the new path to begin. Mouseup. (The point will be placed without the infernal auto-join behavior.)
    4. Release the Spacebar.
The Pen has no business affecting unselected paths by default. It violates the entire meaning of selection. Worst-of-class Bezier drawing interface.

  • Pen tool modifier for asymmetric smooth node?

I use both Illustrator and Corel Draw at work. While I use Illustrator most often, the rest of the art department uses Corel, and I've come to notice a few handy features. One is that, when using the bézier tool, you can hold down a modifier key to draw a smooth but asymmetrical node much as you can hold down Alt or Option in Illustrator to draw a corner node. Is there a similar function in Illustrator that I'm overlooking? It's awfully convenient to not have to stop drawing and switch to direct select tool to get an asymmetric node.

It would seem pretty simple - just use Opt/Alt + Ctrl for instance.
(In Corel, C modifies for a corner point, S for smooth asyemmetrical).
I'm not trying to start a debate on the relative merits of each program, but it is a handy feature. Taking the 1-2 seconds to switch to direct select or convert anchor to modify each anchor I need to be asymmetrical really adds up on a drawing with several thousand anchors — to the point that I've found myself using Corel, which I don't normally prefer except for prepress work, for some drawings at this job I've recently started.

  • Basic Pen tool questions

When plotting anchor points to draw straight lines (see this image) what is the best way to ensure that the width of each wave (in this example) is the same as the other ones? How do you know where to plot the anchor points to do this? Thanks.

keeping the same height can be guided by using the Smart Guides from the View menu, but for the width there is nothing that can assist like that except displaying and snapping to the Grid also accessible from the View menu. Depending on the width you may want to customize the grid in the Preferences to make it more useful. Those were general tips, but when you have a repeating pattern like this you can easily repeat one segment many times by duplicating it  and then join all segments. And for your particular example you can just use the Zig Zag effect from Effects > Distort and Transform to create this right away.

  • Early termination question for multi-line account

If I terminate one line on a multi-line More Everything account, are there any consequences other than having to pay the ETF?  Does this affect any of my other lines in any way?  Does it impact my ability to add a new line in the future?  Thanks!

Here's what i found at this Source:
    http://www.nbcnews.com/technology/phone-early-termination-fees-how-know-what-youd-owe-1B5919843
    Verizon
Verizon's early termination fee is $175 for standard devices and $350 for advanced devices like smartphones. Like AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint, Verizon gives you a discount based on how many months of the contract you've fulfilled. For each month you've fulfilled in your cell contract, the ETF you'd pay to cancel goes down by $10 for an advanced device, or $5 for a standard device.
You'll take a little bit less of a hit if you terminate your contract immediately after you start it. You can end your contract for any reason during the first 14 days, but you'll have to return the device, for which you'll pay a $35 restocking fee ($70 for netbooks and tablets).
One small piece of good news: If you pay full price for a new device, Verizon will let you activate service without a contract. The unlocked iPhone 4S isn't cheap (it starts at $649), but if you're a cell phone carrier commitment-phobe, the full-price, no-contract option might be worth looking into.
The time of this Article was Sept, 2012 so i don't know if there have been updates to it but i'm Guessing it is the same..  b33

  • Is there a way to change pen tool width for each anchor point?

I'm new to illistrator, and I've been looking around to see if I can find something that will show how I can take an ancor point and change the width of it. How can I do this? Thanks.

There's a new width tool in CS5 which will allow you to vary the width of the stroke of a path.

  • How Do I make curved lines with the pen tool in after effects CS6

Hello, so I have been following this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKzB-CFT0MI on how to make 2d intros in after effects and at the 2:20 mark he shows how he uses the pen tool to make curved lines around the elipse. I tried to do the samething myself, and couldent make the curved lines. I looked it up online and there were tutorials on how to make curved lines but they did not work the same way, and I could not make curves like he did.So if any of you know how to do curved lines like in the video, your help will be appreciated.
    Thanks !

This is basic stuff and it's basically the same way Illustrator or Photoshop works with bezier paths. You'll find a lot of helpful information if you just type masking or mask in the Search After Effects Help field at the top right corner of the app.
    Adobe - Search: masking
Directly from the Help Files: After Effects Help | Creating shapes and masks
Mylenium.. sorry you thought it was an awful tutorial. I made it in under a minute just to show this member the very basic task of creating a mask with the pen tool and animating the shape. I'll try and up the quality of my quick replies to simple operations.

  • How to hide the extra line when use the AI pen tool

When I use AI CC  pen tool to draw a line, when i click the 1st anchor point,  " - " shows next to the Poniter  ( I did not drag ) ,I tried to move, but  an extra line coming out before I click another point. So I could not draw lines or curves!  That extra line just follow the Pointer  direction.  I am using Window 32 bit,  will it affect this?  please help.

    suetsuetwong,
Apologizing for my being so slow in the uptake, I believe I have finally grasped the meaning.
As I now (mis)understand it, you are seeing the (maybe overly) helpful Smart Guides in action.
You may ignore the line or untick Smart Guides in the View dropdown, or change their settings as desired.
The Smart Guides are trying to help you with snapping to directions, paths, Anchor Points, whatever, and also telling you where you are.

  • Brush definition/color swatches have disappeared for pen tool

I'm using illustrator CC on a late 2012 Mac, OSX 10.9.5
I just opened up my pen tool to draw some lines. Among my color options for both the stroke and the fill are.... nothing. That's ok, because I can still hold shift and click to being up the alternative color user interface. But I wonder if this is connected to my more serious problem: When I click on the brush definition dropdown, my choice is... Basic. And nothing else. I can open the brush libarary, and select a bunch of artisitic and bristle brushes, BUT I JUST WANT 3 pt. ROUND! And I can't find it, the dropdown menu has gone blank, where befiore it contained basic, 1 pt, 3pt, 10pt round, etc.
Where did they all go? I'm pretty sure I haven't changed any settings. I just want to be able to draw a line with the pen tool that has rounded ends. This is entirely mysterious to me.
(PS, while I'm complaining, Adobe, seriously, why can't I just pick a variable width profile and a brush definition for a pen stroke rather than having to make the stroke and go back and edit it? Endlessly frustrating. As powerful as this program is, this seems like a really simple thing you guys should include)
    Please help!

Bottom left of the Swatches panel or from the panel flyout (small triangle, upper right) Open Swatch Library gives a whole list. You can use System or even better just copy the image and use File>New and choose an appropriate New Document Profile for the new file and then paste in the image.
