Pentax *ist DL2 RAW Support

Hi,
I really really want to use Aperture, but Mac OS lacks support for my camera's RAW format. I have a Pentax *ist DL2, not a particularly new model, but the only DSLR I have, and thanks to my collection of Pentax lenses, im unlikely to change anytime soon.
I have done some experiments with changing the RAW.plist file (as described on the ok! pentax! one thousand! blog) which works, but only if I convert my .PEF (Pentax RAW) files to DNGs first. In Leopard, the RAW.plist file no longer exists, so I had to try another approach - modifying the RAW files themselves and changing the identifier string from *ist DL2 to *ist DL.
Since the DL and DL2 appear to use the same RAW format, it should be trivial. However, I can no longer justify the hassle of hexediting my RAW files just to get the program to see them.
I know Joe Schorr said the team are ACTUELY aware of the need for supporting the newest cameras, but PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can we have support for my lowly old DL2???
Cheers

Thats the blog entry I was on about. Seems the raw.plist does exist, but I dont want to have to convert to DNG.
Please Joe Schorr, if you could help out us DL2 (and DS2) owners, we'd be very grateful

  • How to get Aperture and iPhoto to use Pentax *ist DL RAW images natively

Using some techniques that I found in various places in these forums, I am going to give step-by-step instructions to get Aperture and iPhoto to recognize Pentax *ist DL RAW images natively.
Note: This worked for me using 10.4.6 with the latest iPhoto 06 and Aperture updates. I do NOT know if this will work on older versions of OS X, iPhoto, or Aperture.
Note: If you also use a Pentax *ist DS camera, these instructions will probably disable support for that particular device due to the modifications made to a system file. Only complete these instructions if you want to use a *ist DL camera.
** These instructions involve modifying system level files using a HEX editor. If you are not comfortable with this, do NOT attempt to do this or you could kill your system. Remember, BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP. These steps worked great for me but follow at your own risk!! **
    Ok, lets begin...
    1) Download this great patch by macintosh_tech
    http://idisk.mac.com/macintosh_tech-Public
This patch contains an updated raw.plist file which includes the RAW information for the *ist DL. This patch also contains an updated libRaw.dylib file and an updated Raw Presets file for Aperture.
** Do NOT copy the libRaw.dylib file from this patch to the folder listed in the patch Read_Me. This file did not work on my Intel-based Mac and crashed my system!!
I was able to modify my original libRaw.dylib file using a HEX editor to get it to work on my system. Instructions for this modification will follow.
    2) Open the .dmg of the patch in a Finder window
    3) Open a new finder window and browse to /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Frameworks/ImageIO.fra mework/Resources
*4) Backup the libRaw.dylib and Raw.plist files. Copy them to a safe location. For extra safety, you can just copy the whole Resources folder to a safe location (Make sure that you COPY it and dont MOVE it)*
    5) Right-click the libRaw.dylib file and select "Get Info". Look at the bottom of the info window and expand the "Ownership & Permissions" tab. In this section, expand the "Details" tab. If the lock icon is in the locked position, click it to unlock it. Change "Owner" to your user name. If requested, enter your system password at this point. Close the info window. This step lets you modify the libRaw.dylib file.
    6) Complete step 5 for the Raw.plist file.
    7) Copy the Raw.plist file from the "Place In System Folder" folder from the patch to the Resources folder. It will ask you if you wnt to overwrite the existing file. Click "Replace".
    8) Open a new finder window and browse to the /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Application Support/Aperture/ folder.
    * 9) Backup the "Raw Decode Presets.plist" file *
    10) Copy the "Raw Decode Presets.plist" file from the "Place In Home Directory" folder from the patch to the /Users/YOURUSERNAME/Library/Application Support/Aperture/ folder. Click "replace" if it asks you.
    11) Here's the tricky part. Download a HEX editor if you don't have one. I used 0xED. It is free and can be downloaded from
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/29521
    12) Open the libRaw.dylib file from the Resources folder in your HEX editor.
Note: This is your original libRaw.dylib file from your /System/Library/...../Resources/ folder, NOT the file from the patch.
Use the Find function and search for the string "Pentax *ist DS". Make sure you are using "Search Type: Text" (or equivilent in your editor) and that you use proper case. When you find this string, change the "S" in the "DS" to an "L". The string should now look like "Pentax *ist DL". Use the "Find Next" function to find the next instance of "Pentax *ist DS". Again, change the "S" to an "L". There should be two total instances that you need to change. Save the file and exit the editor.
    13) Open Disk Utility and repair permissions. This will set the raw.plist and libRaw.dylib files back to their original permissions.
    14) Reboot the system.
    15) You should now be able to view .PEF files natively in Aperture and iPhoto. I appologize in advance for any typos. Let me know how this works, as this is my first tutorial of this nature.
    Macbook 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

It would appear that my last post was a moot point as the 10.4.7 update adds support for the *ist DL. It's nice to have it biult into the operating system now.

  • Pentax K-3 Raw Support?

Has anyone been able to get raw image processing with the new Pentax K-3? Thanks.

Keep in mind that only Apple can say when or if a particular camera will be included in Raw support. No one here can say when that might happen.
You can send feedback to Apple requesting support for the camera, see
    Aperture->Provide Aperture Feedback
Don;t know how much that helps but it can;t hurt.

  • Pentax *ist DS finally supported - thank you, very much appreciated

OMG *istDS support out of the box!
I'm installing right now and keeping my fingers crossed. Have to wait for restart...
    THANK YOU JOE AND TEAM
    Cheers,
    Karl

I had been hacking my Raw.plist before this update. At first glance, I can't see a difference to the images. The "Apple defaults" in the Raw finetuning tool provide the same values as those for the *ist DL, and frankly, I don't see why they shouldn't - as far as I know there is no (electronic / software) difference between the DL and the DS, at least not with those DS's updated to version 2.x of the in-camera software.
I'll delve into this in more detail over the week-end, and also of course I want to finally see what the numbers in the various matrices of the Raw.plist are, and how they compare to the dcraw code!

  • RAW Support for Samsung GX-1L

    Hi,
I have a Samsung GX-1L which is basically a rebadged Pentax SLR
The problem is the iPhoto 6.0.4 running on OSX 10.4.7 does not regognise the file format (PEF).
OS X 10.4.7 is supposed to support the Pentax *ist DL RAW file format, so I would have assumed it would have had no problem with the Samsung?

    Hi there,
iPhoto does not recognize every RAW image but it does surprise me that it won't see PEF's. I use Graphic Converter - it's a great almost 'free' App, check it out and it will open almost any RAW image including PEF's... Good luck, Rick

  • RAW support for Pentax istDS2

Would like to buy aperature, but istDS2 not supported. Is this a possible solution? (from http://ok1000.blogspot.com/2006/06/waiting-for-aperture-and-iphoto.html)
If you have OS 10.4.6 or later, but don't have support for your Pentax's .PEF format, the trick is to dig down to the .PLIST settings text file that Apple's RAW support looks into when opening RAW files, and to create a custom entry for your camera, such as the *ist DS. Brought to you by Karl Geiger from the Aperture Forums, with my special thanks to Peter Gnemmi, here's a recipe for getting your DS .PEFs into iPhoto and Aperture.
Keen to try this, but don't want to screw up the application - suggestions?

Why don't you post you question in the Aperture
    forum?
As I understand it, recognizing the specific camera
is part of the system recognizing this particular
camera, which would then likely cover iPhoto as well
    as Aperature
Thanks for the reply...new to this forum.

  • HT3946 Aperture 3 Support for Pentax K-30 RAW?

I'm curious about when/if RAW support will be updated for Pentax K-30?
Is there a Support Page for Aperture where one can submit support requests?
    Thanks very much,
Also looking for awesome online training courses for Aperture, and RAW processing.

    Paul,
see this page for the currently available raw support:

I'm curious about when/if RAW support will be updated for Pentax K-30?
Nobody here knows the answer to this; only Apple can tell, and this is a user-to-user forum.
To submit a request, use the Aperture feedback form directly from the Aperture application menu:

  • RAW support for Pentax K3

When will Aperture RAW support be updated for Pentax K3 be added?  It's already on Adobe Lightroom....!

I my exeprience, I'd say when it's ready and not a moment sooner.
Lightroom is always pretty quick off the mark with support, but sometimes that carries a quality cost, like happened with the Fuji X100 and X-Trans sensors. Lightroom's support came out first, but Aperture's came out better.
I have a similar frustration having just bought a Sony A7. But I simply shoot raw+JPEG and use the JPEGs until the raw support is ready.
A side benefit of this approach is it makes you get to know the camera settings a little better in order to make the best JPEG.
If I have an emergency and really messed up a shot and need the raw to recover it, I use the raw converter supplied with the camera to make a better conversion in a TIFF and then add that to Aperture.

  • RAW support for Pentax K5 II(s)

Any idea when we will be able to see RAW support for Pentax K5 II(s)? I know I can use DNG, but not PEF currently. I am assuming for DNG, there is no dedicated camera profile yet.

    I figure:
    * Longer than I can hold my breath
    * Before the earth is swallowed up by the red giant of the sun.
That said, nobody here knows the answer.  Hopefully it won't be too long.

  • FYI .....  Update to Apples Camera Raw Support to 1.0.1

    You can get it here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
Also note there are some firmware updates
    From Apple ......
"This update improves RAW file format compatibility for the following digital SLR cameras:
-Canon Digital Rebel XTi / 400D / Kiss X Digital
    -Nikon D80
    -Pentax *ist DS
    Other issues addressed:
-Handling of large Canon RAW files (.CRW)
    -DNG compatibility on Intel-based Macs
-Lines sometimes appearing in images exported from Aperture"
    -Robert

System Profiler should tell you the version of the
framework. Also, the Software Updates app can list
    all the updates you've applied.
Thanks. I looked in System Profiler but couldn't find any mention of Camera RAW and a spotlight search didn't get me any closer.
Where should I be looking in System Profiler?
And, I'm a bit of a newbie, when I open Software Update, it automatically checks for new software and finds my mac up to date. The only option is to click OK which closes Software Update. How do I check the installed updates? Is is some key combo like OPTION-Click?

Wow. I just installed the universal version of this update and now my iMac won't boot. How swell... It sits at the white screen.
I can hold down the power button and turn it off and on, but that's it. I've tried booting from CD by holding down C and zapping the PRAM and it still just sits at that white screen. I've unplugged it and am going to leave it for about 15 minutes and see if that does it.
Has anyone else had this problem?

  • Panasonic FZ8 raw support

The Panasonic DMC-FZ8 is a very capable compact bridge camera, with full manual control and some features you don't even find in most DSLRs. Raw support within LR would be welcome.
    Thanks for listening

Any new camera will get added. But the addition will come in sync with ACR updates and one mainly just has to wait for it.

  • Pentax Super K100D RAW files not recognised by Lightroom

    Hi all
Have tried to import Pentax .PEF files (RAW format) into Adobe Lightroom and via Adobe Bridge...no luck. It works with JPEG files, but I don't WANT to shoot in JPEG format!
Have reformatted the camera memory card, have 90GB left on my HD to perform the import, and the camera, computer and software is all current and updated.
I downloaded RAW Developer, and lo and behold, IT recognises the files and works on the RAW files with no problem...so it's not the camera, or the computer.
Everything is operating on a Mac OSX 10.4.1 (we don't have Leopard in Australia yet).
    Any ideas/help appreciated.
FYI - I am operating Lightroom in TRIAL mode. Haven't purchased yet - and won't be until I can sort out this problem!

There's a list of the supported cameras here: http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html
The 100D Super is new camera. There's always a delay between a new camera launch and Adobe providing support for the RAW profile.
You'll also see that OS X Tiger doesn't support it yet either: http://www.apple.com/aperture/raw/cameras.html.
