Pentax K-5 and K-r

Hi there,
any chance to include shortly the new Pentax DSLR K-5 and K-r in Camera Raw?
cheers
Gerd

Same reply:
How do you come to that questionable conclusion, Oodini?  Where do you think you read that?
You can't base that on the size of the file alone, as an uncompressed DNG file will of course be larger than a corresponding compressed raw file.
I can assure you that the DNGs from my K20D are absolutely undemosaiced raw DNG files and in no way "linearized".  I assume you do understand the concept of linear files—which raw files are.

  • Pentax K_5 11 and Elements 11 not responding: Help

I have just bought a Pentax K_5 11 and Photoshop Elements 11 which worked fine with the trial CS5 but now that the trial has finished I cannot access my photos.  I cannot afford to update CS5.  Is there a way around this as Elements 11 does not work now?  I have  XL on my computer.  Can anyone tell me what I can do?

If using PEF files ensure the camera raw plug-in is up to date. From Expert Mode in PSE11 click:
    Help >> Updates
Install camera raw 7.4 if available.

  • Pentax ist DL and 1.1 - Help Needed

    Hi folks,
First post here but I wonder if someone could help me out. Been waiting patiently for Aperture to support the Pentax .PEF format and now it looks like it has finally arrived.
Upgraded to 10.4.6 and Aperture 1.1.
Now...when I try and import a .PEF file I am able to see the thumbnails in the Import window when I go my folder with the .PEF files in it. I click import and then I get a gray thumbnail with the "image format not supported".
I'm pretty sure Apple supports this format now. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks in advance for any help!

I'm not sure if it's really supported or not - one quick check, can you open the .PEF files in Preview.app and see them full size?

  • Pentax Pocketjet II (and possibly other printers w/ Parallel to USB issues)

Leopard would not recognize my Pentax Pocketjet II printer. It was driving me insane. Called Pentax tech support, they were sympathetic but didn't really have an answer, other than to say that these printers were not originally designed for USB (they designed the converter cable after as a workaround) and that they did not give out a USB serial number in the way that more recent models would. And that perhaps the OS (Leopard) was not recognizing it because of that. Their drivers DID install (written for OS X but pre-Leopard) but my Macbook Pro did not recognize the physical existence of (or connection to) the printer. Anyway, to make a long story short, after trolling these boards for an hour, I found some references to people with HP printers with similar issues, and (god bless him) some guy posted a link to a program called USBTB -- and it worked beautifully! I'm posting the link below. And, if it works for you (as it did for me), by all means -- BUY THE KID LUNCH!!!

  • Pentax K5 and lens detection

    Hello,
I have noticed since some LR revision that we have a problem in automatic lense detection(even in raw) with the pentax K-5 and some lens :
pentax SMC DA 18-55 3.5-5.6 AL WR : DNG ok, PEF ok
pentax SMC DA 50-200 4-5.6 ED WR : DNG ko, PEF ko
pentax SMC DFA 100 2.8 macro WR : DNG ko, PEF ko
for those ko lens if I chose pentax in manufacturer list it detects the correct lens model.
In can supply images if you need to correct those bugs.
    Regards

My first question is why are you converting to DNG before importing into Aperture? It appears that Aperture should support the RAW files from that camera.
Second question is how familiar are you with the whole concept of RAW images?  You realize that none of the camera settings (apart from shutter speed and aperture) affect the digital RAW file.
One of the strengths and reasons for shooting RAW is the ability to adjust white balance after the shoot. JPG images are extremely limited in their ability to have there white balance adjusted.
RAW conversion software is as much art as science, which is why no two RAW conversion programs will render an image in exactly the same way.
So I would first eliminate the DNG step and then see how that affects the workflow.
    regards

  • Can no longer play my videos (.avi) from my Pentax Camera.

    Please HELP.
I have been using my Pentax Digital point and shoot camera since 2008. I had no problems watching my videos (.avi) on I photo. They would upload and play as normal. Then all of a sudden about one year ago. They no longer play. The videos on my iphoto uploaded since them don't play, as well as the older ones. Now they dont even upload.
I have contacted pentax for support and they have no idea how it interfaces with iphoto. They suggestes VLO media browser. But id rather not have two diffrent applications for my media.
    What should I try?
Does Iphoto no longer recognize .avi??

Did this start after you upgraded to Snow Leopard?  Do you have Quicktime Player 7 installed on your Mac?  It would be in the Applications/Utilities folder if you do.  If not then download it from here: QuickTime Player 7.6.6 for Mac OS X v10.6.3.

  • Camera RAW image support for Pentax K100D

    Hi,
Firstly, let me just say I have a MacBook Pro which came preloaded with Tiger. A month or so ago I upgraded to Leopard and I have applied all the available Apple software update.
I recently got a Pentax K100D digital SLR camera capable of taking images in RAW format (the pentax saves these with a .PEF file extension) and I have been trying to view these images in Leopard. I read the article below, which says that Leopard provides system-level support for the Pentax K100D camera RAW format.
*Digital camera RAW formats supported by Mac OS X 10.5*
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306835
Now, my problem is that I cannot seem to be able to open the .PEF files with neither Quick Look, Preview, iPhoto or Aperture. Basically, none of these programs seem to be able to display my .PEF files. Aperture says 'unsupported image format'.
I have installed the software that came with my Pentax (i.e. Pentax Photo Browser and Pentax Photo Laboratory) and these applications can display the .PEF images just fine. For what it's worth, I installed this software before I upgraded to Leopard.
If I right-click on a .PEF file in Finder, the only programs listed in the Open context menu are the above two Pentax applications.
So, what am I missing? Clearly something seems to be screwy in my Leopard set up. Is there some way to 'repair' the RAW image support in Leopard??
I would appreciate any help in fixing this as I would really like to start working with RAW images in Aperture and iPhoto.
Finally, just be aware that I am not an experienced Mac user. I have always used Windows until now and so... if you have a fix for this I would really appreciate a slightly more elaborate response.
    Thanks in advance,
    Eddie

I have done a little more research on this...
As it turns out, my camera is a Pentax K100D Super - not a K100D. The K100D Super is not listed as one of the supported camera RAW formats in the aforementioned article. So I guess this means that my camera is as yet unsupported. Sigh...

  • Upgraded to Mountain Lion and Aperture 3.4.5 dng not supported?

    Hi,
    I upgraded from 10.6.8 to 10.8.4
Also downloaded Aperture update to 3.4.5
Now, many of my dng images are showing as Not Supported.  I checked compatibility on Pentax K-30 and they are supported in Mountain Lion.
I also downloaded the latest RAW support file from update today.
Does anyone know what I should do?
I have converted the entire Ap 3 library to the current format, as directed by a dialog message when opening Ap3 after the update.
    Thanks in advance,
    Deb

  • Pentax K10D: Camera profiles, "ACR 4.x" vs "Pentax 1.00". Which one is broken?

Hardware: Pentax K10D, use DNG raw format.
Software: Pgotoshop CS3, ACR 4.5, Windows.
ACR allows me to select one of four profiles:
    (1) ACR 4.4
    (2) ACR 3.7
    (3) Embedded
    (4) Pentax 1.00
And results of this selection is dramatic. And strange, too.
I have one shot with XRtie ColorChecker.
I select "ACR 4.4" (default) profile and set white balance by second gray patch in raw (18% gray) with White Balance Tool. Color temperature is 8000 and tint is -20. Ok.
I select "ACR 3.7" profile, repeat WBT, and get same results. Ok.
I select "Pentax 1.00" profile, and get.... Temperature 11500K and Tint +75!
I know, that profiles change color rendering. It is ok.
But why these two (ACR 4.4 and 3.7 is almost the same) profiles change color rendering SO DIFFERENTLY? Color temperature is universal number, daylight is about 5500K, good flash is always 5500K, D65 light source is 6500K (6504K), etc.
I thought, that good profile should give good neutrals, and in case of controlled light, calculated (by gray patch) color temperature should correspond to light source.
I understand, that different profiles could render skin tones, cyans, shadows and highlights slightly differently, and there are many discussions, which profile is better. But 3500K difference is not "slight difference" and is not question like "I like skin tones with this profile more that ones with another"! Am I right?
It seems, that one of profiles is broken. Which one? Why difference is so huge?

Essentially embedded was broken, not in the colors, but in the white balance mappings. There was an issue with the white balance values in the profiles originally embedded in the Pentax DNG files. As long as you do a click-WB __AFTER__ choosing your profile, the actual colors should be fine (but won't and aren't expected to match the ACR 4.4/3.7 rendering exactly).

  • How to revert copied and pasted Develop Settings to raw files.

Using Bridge 2.1.1.9 and just discovered this handy workflow scheme.
Was wondering if there was a way to go back to the previous setting after applying a Develop Setting copied from another file within Bridge. There doesn't seem to be or at least I haven't found a "Command Z" option within Bridge.

    Good points, Omke.
I've duplicated my Pentax PEF's and they do retain the .xmp embedded edits without being converted to DNG.
And I do save custom named edits using the traditional method in ACR, but you should see the list I've accumulated. It's huge. Most have come about due to my experimentation with target scenes I've created to come up with some setting that could be applied to a series of scenes lit with available light to make them all look like they came out of the same camera. I don't own expensive studio lights. I shoot landscapes and animals at my local park.
I just love the immediacy of copying and pasting .xmp exported tweaked edits from another image and applying to a series of scenes shot under the same outdoor light. I have my image thumbnails sprawled out in Bridge so I can get an overall view of their differences. It would be nice to revert back to the previous .xmp exported edit after a copy and paste.
But it doesn't really matter anyway cuz most just need a tweak to color temp, clarity and vibrance adjust to get them to look alike with regards to color. Exposure differences are far more time consuming and require opening each one in ACR.

  • Pentax k-5 raw: dng or pef?

    Hi there,
I used to shoot raw (=pef) with my Pentax K-5 and import/process with Aperture (3.4.5=current).
Just out of curiosity I changed to DNG format in the Pentax. When those raw shots are imported and processed, the color correction is SIGNIFICANTLY different from the one for PEF raw shots (much darker, more contrast). Anyone noticed something similar? WIthout checking with color test cards or the like, I'd say pef get treated correctly/better than dng...

I think you've just about answered your own question. Go back to PEF!
I'm using Sony cameras now but shot with Pentax for several years. During that time I too experimented with in-camera DNG. At first, it seemed like a great idea — one universal format that future-proofed my raw files. Well, it didn't turn out that way. For one thing, the big camera makers (Canon, Nikon, Sony) don't support DNG: they use their own proprietary formats and will continue to do so for the forseeable future. But the less common formats (like PEF) are still supported by all raw converters like Aperture and Lightroom. DNG files caused me way more problems than PEF ever did. Some of the programs I worked with at that time (Bibble Pro comes to mind) didn't even support DNG, for reasons that they defended on their website. And I too had the experience you've had, of DNG files being rendered a bit differently. I thought that wasn't supposed to happen but it did.
Now I save my Sony .ARW files. I have no intention of converting them to DNG in the future. My sense is that, with no major camera manufacturer supporting DNG, it's really got no future.
    Good luck.
    Will

  • I Cant get iMovie to upload videos taken on my Pentax A10 camera

Can anyone help? I was having issues with video files in iPhoto taken with my pentax. Other videos were playing fine and have uploaded to iMovie.
Installed Perian. Movie's are playing back with sound now in iPhoto so progress being made.
I can't however get iMovies to recognize these pentax video's and pull them in. Even tried a manual import but it won't let me select the files. Am I doomed to fail for this or is there another way?

This is an extract from a review of your camera:
"The Optio A10 is DivX® certified. Movie playback is not supported on Macintosh operating systems."
Perhaps MPEG Streamclip would be able to convert your files.
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
You could try downloading and installing then drag your files into MPEG Streamclip.
Select File > Export to QuickTime then choose the Apple Intermediate Codec.
The converted file will import into iMovie.

  • Help, Help me Rhonda! (Pentax K-x RAW)

Is ANYONE getting usable results from current Aperture and OSX versions using a Pentax K-x and RAW files?
I have tried everything I can think of, and still getting huge color shifts on high ISO (1600 and above) RAW files.
If this is working for you, I would love to know EXACTLY what versions of CRU, OSX, and in-camera settings you are using.
    Thanks!
Would love to start using Aperture again, I have had to remove it completely from my workflow, and it's killing my productivity.

Thanks acai, am aware of the other posts, and have contributed to, or even started many of them.
My concern is that this continues to happen update after update, and am curious if Anyone is getting acceptable results from Aperture 3 with this camera.
If they are, it would be helpful to know EXACTLY what settings they are using, and further, it would potentially indicate a problem specific to my computer.
    To date I have:
removed and reinstalled all prokit updates.
removed and reinstalled all RAW update series, checking at each update level, for each version of prokit update.
shot images in both DNG and PEF formats.
shot in all available color spaces.
shot images at ALL apertures and ISO's for import as RAW and JPG.
shot with camera settings adjusted at neutral, and many various exposure compensations
discarded and rebuilt all thumbnails many times.
forced re-rendering of previews for all Pentax RAW files many times.
individually "updated" Pentax RAW rendering in HUD on over a hundred images.
rebuilt library three times, repaired library 5 times.
    created new accounts in OSX.
created new libraries for Aperture 3.
have reinstalled 10.6 from disks, and upgraded from combo update to current twice.
My most current use of Update 3.0 did NOT solve the problem under OS 10.6.6, with Aperture 3.1.1.
So again, a request for comments from anyone who IS getting this camera to work in OS 10.6.5 or 10.6.6 would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
