Pentax K100D PEF Support?

Hi there,
I'm using pentax k100d and also using LR 2.6. Just tried 3.0 version also.
But still, I don't get actual color profile compared to LCD from camera.
I think LR doesn't support exact camera calibration from K100D, K110D and K100Ds.
So to develop my pictures with precise color profile, I have to convert PEF to TIF by PPL, which is very slow bundle program.
You know, it's very annoying process!!
Please let me know how to solve this problem.
thx.

Thank you ssprengel!
PEF files taken by K100D is not fully supported by LR. LR imports PEF files with its own "Adobe Standard Calibration" which is different from what I see in LCD or other viewers like ACDsee.
So my idea was make color profile from DNG file and put it into LR, but I can't load new color profile I made.
I put the .dcp file to:
C:\ProgramData\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles
but it seems like it's not working.
Maybe my .dcp file is not perfect, because its size is around 1KB..
My another Idea is, modify other pentax camera's color profile e.g. K10D, K20D, K200D or even K-7. I think RAW files taken by those cameras don't has this problem and anyway "Pentax-looking" is almost same among those cameras, I guess. However I can't modify those camera's color profiles simply. I think LR automatically matches camera model and color profile.
So, what can I do?

  • Camera RAW image support for Pentax K100D

    Hi,
Firstly, let me just say I have a MacBook Pro which came preloaded with Tiger. A month or so ago I upgraded to Leopard and I have applied all the available Apple software update.
I recently got a Pentax K100D digital SLR camera capable of taking images in RAW format (the pentax saves these with a .PEF file extension) and I have been trying to view these images in Leopard. I read the article below, which says that Leopard provides system-level support for the Pentax K100D camera RAW format.
*Digital camera RAW formats supported by Mac OS X 10.5*
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306835
Now, my problem is that I cannot seem to be able to open the .PEF files with neither Quick Look, Preview, iPhoto or Aperture. Basically, none of these programs seem to be able to display my .PEF files. Aperture says 'unsupported image format'.
I have installed the software that came with my Pentax (i.e. Pentax Photo Browser and Pentax Photo Laboratory) and these applications can display the .PEF images just fine. For what it's worth, I installed this software before I upgraded to Leopard.
If I right-click on a .PEF file in Finder, the only programs listed in the Open context menu are the above two Pentax applications.
So, what am I missing? Clearly something seems to be screwy in my Leopard set up. Is there some way to 'repair' the RAW image support in Leopard??
I would appreciate any help in fixing this as I would really like to start working with RAW images in Aperture and iPhoto.
Finally, just be aware that I am not an experienced Mac user. I have always used Windows until now and so... if you have a fix for this I would really appreciate a slightly more elaborate response.
    Thanks in advance,
    Eddie

I have done a little more research on this...
As it turns out, my camera is a Pentax K100D Super - not a K100D. The K100D Super is not listed as one of the supported camera RAW formats in the aforementioned article. So I guess this means that my camera is as yet unsupported. Sigh...

  • Pentax K100D support?

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get support in Aperture for the K100D's PEF file? I tried editing the Raw.plist file and renaming the Pentax-*ist DL key to Pentax-K100D, repaired permissions, and rebooted and it wont import in Aperture, iPhoto or Preview, etc.
I also tried to convert it to DNG and that didn't work either. I keep getting an Unsupported Image Format error in Aperture
    any ideas?
    Powermac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Yes, Apple's kinda slow adopting the more "exotic" brands and camera makes out there. They're focusing on the cameras that users buy most, which makes sense from their point of view. Sadly, that leaves a lot of us in the dust.
I believe that the reason for the very slow integration of new and more exotic cameras into the system is due to the very rigorous quality standards that Apple sets with Raw development.
Other Raw interpreters basically have camera specific color matrices, all other parameters for Raw development are applied regardless of camera make. With Aperture, they do a lot of camera-specific Raw development upon import - not only the colours but sharpening, black point, contrast... that needs lots of testing and balancing, and thus a lot of time.
Frankly, although I've been really sad about the lack of Pentax *ist DS support in Aperture (and that's not likely to change soon according to the above), I'm glad that they implemented such high standards for their Raw development. No one else does this, afaik, not even Adobe with Lightroom.
And as long as I can hack the Raw.plist to get my camera to be kinda supported, I'm ok with it. Their Raw developer is very, very good. I'd like to see it stay that way.
Of course, if there's any way to help to accelerate adoption of currently non-supported cameras... I'd gladly help out if I only knew how!
    Cheers,
    Karl

  • Pentax K-7 support in Lightroom 2.4 not quite complete?

    Hi,
I have my K-7, and Lightroom 2.4 installed. Lightroom reads K-7 pefs and dngs, but doesn't seem to do anything with the lens aberration info included in the pef files when that feature is enabled. Am I correct, and if so, is this just temporary, or a permanent situation? My understanding is that Lightroom does recognize and use the lens aberration info included in raw files created by the Panasonic DMC LX3 camera.
I understand that Adobe has updated the DNG standard to support the inclusion of such info in dng files. But no camera currently on the market supports this standard yet of course.
    Just wonderin'
    Mike

but doesn't seem to do anything with the lens aberration info included in the pef files when that feature is enabled. Am I correct, and if so, is this just temporary, or a permanent situation?
That is correct. Lightroom cannot read and use any lens aberration info from cameras other than the Panasonic LX3 and Leica that uses the exact same sensor, lens and electronics. This is in there because Panasonic would not allow Lightroom/ACR to render their RAW files without Adobe correcting for the distortion. They were worried people would see that their lens distorts and fringes very strongly if you would just get a straight RAW rendering.
Nobody knows whether the corrections will will be added to LR/ACR in the future for other cameras, but it would be an obvious next step. Very likely would be automatic LCA correction and barrel/pincushion distortion correction (perhaps not automatic but a simple slider like in the lens distortion correction in Photoshop)
I understand that Adobe has updated the DNG standard to support the inclusion of such info in dng files. But no camera currently on the market supports this standard yet of course.
Correct on both. We'll see what Adobe does next.

  • Samsung GX-10 and Pentax K10D RAW support?

I recently bought a Samsung GX-10 thinking it was essentially the same camera as the Pentax K10D (which is it in hardware). However, it appears that the RAW images cannot be read in Aperture or iPhoto, even thought the K10D is listed as supported. The RAW files are .DNG which I thought was some kind of standard. To make matters worse, Samsung doesn't even provide any of it's own Mac software, so I currently have no way to read its RAW files at all. Doesn't anyone know if/when Apple will add support for the GX-10?
    Thanks in advance.

yeah,, I know about raw data , and yes, wrong or not, the rendition of gx-10 pictures are very "bad"  compared with other softwares and with my eyes, and I think that you can understand when i said "bad" no?, there aren't a wrong or correct in raw color but the people speaks about the wrong o correct colors all the time, i think that you understand when speak about  bad colors, a bad WB , etc.
I know that i can make my own profile but is not easy, to generate a good profile I need a  Macbeth ColorChecker or something like that for example and precise sources of light (like a tungsten) and taking account about that samsung cameras are "clones" of the pentax ones and that samsung shoots in DNG format (and not a propietary raw format)  seems easy solve the problem about color interpretation of GX-10. With time I will buy a color-checker and try, but would be great a correct interpretaion of the own samsung colors
PD2: When i know about samsung "adobe-DNG" capacity, i didn't expect have problems with adobe soft and color intrepretation or something like that.
PD: Sorry , I don't speak english  well, and so I can't express me very well , only basics

  • Pentax K100D u. Photoshop Elements 4

    Hallo zusammen,

  • Pentax RAW Support

I thought the support list notes the RAW image file format for the Pentax K100D was supported, but when I import my images I get the "Unsupported Image Format" message. The list on Aperture's page is supposed to note cameras that are supported, with asterisked models getting "optimized support". Am I reading things wrong, or am I missing something? Only an amateur, but dealing with RAW files thru all the crazy workarounds is already old, and I haven't owned the camera for 1 month! Thoughts?

Based on my experience with newer Canon products still not being supported by Aperture I would suggest you find another way to manage your RAW files. It could be a very long time before Apple decides to support your camera.
Here's a freeware program that does a better job supporting new cameras than Apple -
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/imaging_3d/rawphotoprocessor.html
You may want to try this out and see if it support Pentax.

To send your request to Apple you really should used the "Provide Aperture Feedback" in the pulldown menu under Aperture.

  • How do I get Camera Raw for Pentax PEF file to open in Photoshop CS4?

How do I get Camera Raw in CS4 to recognize Pentax PEF files? I have downloaded and installed the Camera Raw Plug Ins but I still cannot open the file.  I have done this on my older computer but can't seem to get it to work on my new one.

I just looked that up. You need at least Adobe Camera Raw 8.3 which only Photoshop CS6 and above has.
Adobe Camera RAW 8.3 include Pentax K-3 support - PentaxForums.com
So in order to read it in ACR 5.7, you will need to use the free Adobe DNG Converter and convert those Pentax raw files to DNG.

  • Support for Pentax K10D - Estimated date?

Any guesses as to when the next update will take place?
I'm using a trial version of aperture, porefer it to the Adobe line, but Adobe sure is quick with its upgrades. It just added the K10D for RAW support while I'm still waiting for Apple.
    Thanks.

We K10D users are still in limbo. I tried the demo of Lightroom 1.0. Works pefrectly with K10D PEF files!! So does the Adobe DNG Converter (3.7) application now on Adobe's website.
Alas, I have tried every option for converting Pentax K10D PEF to an Adobe dng and still can't see them in Aperture.

  • RAW support for Pentax istDS2

Would like to buy aperature, but istDS2 not supported. Is this a possible solution? (from http://ok1000.blogspot.com/2006/06/waiting-for-aperture-and-iphoto.html)
If you have OS 10.4.6 or later, but don't have support for your Pentax's .PEF format, the trick is to dig down to the .PLIST settings text file that Apple's RAW support looks into when opening RAW files, and to create a custom entry for your camera, such as the *ist DS. Brought to you by Karl Geiger from the Aperture Forums, with my special thanks to Peter Gnemmi, here's a recipe for getting your DS .PEFs into iPhoto and Aperture.
Keen to try this, but don't want to screw up the application - suggestions?

Why don't you post you question in the Aperture
    forum?
As I understand it, recognizing the specific camera
is part of the system recognizing this particular
camera, which would then likely cover iPhoto as well
    as Aperature

  • Pentax K110D RAW .PEF Format No Go

    Hi All,
I bought a Pentax K110D. iPhoto won't read it's RAW .PEF files either, under 10.4.7 or 10.4.8. Pentax does provide management software, but it adds an extra step.
Do any of you know how to get iPhoto to work with Pentax .PEF RAW files?
    Thank you.
    -D

    -D:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. If the Pentax is not supported by OS X then you'll have to use another image management application that does support it's raw format. Only one Pentax camera is listed as supported.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • DNG files from Pentax k10d in iPhoto?

I have just stated shooting with my new Pentax k10d. A great camera that are able to save not only pentax RAW (PEF) but also DNG files. My old camera is a Canon 300D, I have been using iPhoto 6 as organizer and intend do so even now.
I thought that iPhoto supported DNG, but it can not read any file other than jpeg from the k10d! Really frustating.
Do I have to wait for an update, and for how long? Is there anybody out there who knows?

    Martinst:
We have no idea when or if iPhoto will support DNG files. They seem to be preferred by many professional photographers for a number of reasons. We'll just have to wait for iLife 07 to see what iPhoto has added.
However, have you downloaded the Digital Camera RAW Support Update 1.0.1 (PPC). It includes some DNG support.

I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Nikon D200 Raw Support

    Hi there,
I purchased Aperture immediately it came out in December 2005 at the same time I got my new Nikon D200. Now some 3 months later I still cannot use Aperture for my Raw files from the D200.
Does anyone else have this same problem and/or does anyone have any info as to when this anomaly may be corrected. I have contacted Apple some time ago by telephone but as yet no response. The guy I spoke with said he would pass on my query.
Thanks for any help you may be able to provide as I am very frustated with lack of info in this regard.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

While routing through iPhoto 6's package structure, looking for names of months and days on calendars to translate into Irish Gaelic, I came upon something interesting. There are strings embedded in iPhoto 6 that match most available raw formats--even ones that aren't supported at all by OS X (such as Pentax's PEF files).
Hopefully 10.4.6 and/or further evolutions of OS X 10.4 will introduce more raw formats.

  • Imported pentax RAW files goes dark

    Hi,
I bought Aperture earlier today and have had nothing but problems importing my images (RAW images that is, jpg files are fine). In the preview where you choose which images to import they look ok (as shot/as in photoshop) but after import they go dark before my eyes (really dark, mb two full stops darker). I tried searching for a solution and found similar problems but no solutions to my specific problem.
    Setup:
    MBP 4,1
    OSX 10.6.7
    Aperture 3.1.2
    Pentax k100d super
After I installed Aperture even finder shows the raw files incorrectly (i tried opening one of the files in a lightroom trial and thats seems to work). Thanks in advance, i really want to like this program...

    Hi,
I have the same camera, and exactly the same problem. Could you solve this issue ?
About images of Pentax cameras looking dark in Aperture, many people mention "if Highlight Correction is enabled, the image is shot at -1 EV exposure compensation, and then everything but the highlights is pushed up in the camera when it makes the JPEG version" -- and thus the solution seems to be to disable this highlight correction. But to me it seems that there is no highlight correction in the k100d super...
Aperture 3 actually clips the histogram (dark pixels turn completely black) with respect to the same PEF file read with the Pentax Photo Lab app or the Gimp. The "Raw Fine Tuning" adjustements do not solve this.
