Pentax K100D support?

Does anyone have any ideas on how to get support in Aperture for the K100D's PEF file? I tried editing the Raw.plist file and renaming the Pentax-*ist DL key to Pentax-K100D, repaired permissions, and rebooted and it wont import in Aperture, iPhoto or Preview, etc.
I also tried to convert it to DNG and that didn't work either. I keep getting an Unsupported Image Format error in Aperture
any ideas?

Yes, Apple's kinda slow adopting the more "exotic" brands and camera makes out there. They're focusing on the cameras that users buy most, which makes sense from their point of view. Sadly, that leaves a lot of us in the dust.
I believe that the reason for the very slow integration of new and more exotic cameras into the system is due to the very rigorous quality standards that Apple sets with Raw development.
Other Raw interpreters basically have camera specific color matrices, all other parameters for Raw development are applied regardless of camera make. With Aperture, they do a lot of camera-specific Raw development upon import - not only the colours but sharpening, black point, contrast... that needs lots of testing and balancing, and thus a lot of time.
Frankly, although I've been really sad about the lack of Pentax *ist DS support in Aperture (and that's not likely to change soon according to the above), I'm glad that they implemented such high standards for their Raw development. No one else does this, afaik, not even Adobe with Lightroom.
And as long as I can hack the Raw.plist to get my camera to be kinda supported, I'm ok with it. Their Raw developer is very, very good. I'd like to see it stay that way.
Of course, if there's any way to help to accelerate adoption of currently non-supported cameras... I'd gladly help out if I only knew how!
Cheers,
Karl

  • Camera RAW image support for Pentax K100D

    Hi,
Firstly, let me just say I have a MacBook Pro which came preloaded with Tiger. A month or so ago I upgraded to Leopard and I have applied all the available Apple software update.
I recently got a Pentax K100D digital SLR camera capable of taking images in RAW format (the pentax saves these with a .PEF file extension) and I have been trying to view these images in Leopard. I read the article below, which says that Leopard provides system-level support for the Pentax K100D camera RAW format.
*Digital camera RAW formats supported by Mac OS X 10.5*
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306835
Now, my problem is that I cannot seem to be able to open the .PEF files with neither Quick Look, Preview, iPhoto or Aperture. Basically, none of these programs seem to be able to display my .PEF files. Aperture says 'unsupported image format'.
I have installed the software that came with my Pentax (i.e. Pentax Photo Browser and Pentax Photo Laboratory) and these applications can display the .PEF images just fine. For what it's worth, I installed this software before I upgraded to Leopard.
If I right-click on a .PEF file in Finder, the only programs listed in the Open context menu are the above two Pentax applications.
So, what am I missing? Clearly something seems to be screwy in my Leopard set up. Is there some way to 'repair' the RAW image support in Leopard??
I would appreciate any help in fixing this as I would really like to start working with RAW images in Aperture and iPhoto.
Finally, just be aware that I am not an experienced Mac user. I have always used Windows until now and so... if you have a fix for this I would really appreciate a slightly more elaborate response.
    Thanks in advance,
    Eddie

I have done a little more research on this...
As it turns out, my camera is a Pentax K100D Super - not a K100D. The K100D Super is not listed as one of the supported camera RAW formats in the aforementioned article. So I guess this means that my camera is as yet unsupported. Sigh...

  • Pentax K100D PEF Support?

    Hi there,
I'm using pentax k100d and also using LR 2.6. Just tried 3.0 version also.
But still, I don't get actual color profile compared to LCD from camera.
I think LR doesn't support exact camera calibration from K100D, K110D and K100Ds.
So to develop my pictures with precise color profile, I have to convert PEF to TIF by PPL, which is very slow bundle program.
You know, it's very annoying process!!
Please let me know how to solve this problem.
    thx.

    Thank you ssprengel!
PEF files taken by K100D is not fully supported by LR. LR imports PEF files with its own "Adobe Standard Calibration" which is different from what I see in LCD or other viewers like ACDsee.
So my idea was make color profile from DNG file and put it into LR, but I can't load new color profile I made.
I put the .dcp file to:
    C:\ProgramData\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles
    C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\CameraRaw\CameraProfiles
but it seems like it's not working.
Maybe my .dcp file is not perfect, because its size is around 1KB..
My another Idea is, modify other pentax camera's color profile e.g. K10D, K20D, K200D or even K-7. I think RAW files taken by those cameras don't has this problem and anyway "Pentax-looking" is almost same among those cameras, I guess. However I can't modify those camera's color profiles simply. I think LR automatically matches camera model and color profile.
    So, what can I do?

  • Pentax RAW Support

I thought the support list notes the RAW image file format for the Pentax K100D was supported, but when I import my images I get the "Unsupported Image Format" message. The list on Aperture's page is supposed to note cameras that are supported, with asterisked models getting "optimized support". Am I reading things wrong, or am I missing something? Only an amateur, but dealing with RAW files thru all the crazy workarounds is already old, and I haven't owned the camera for 1 month! Thoughts?

Based on my experience with newer Canon products still not being supported by Aperture I would suggest you find another way to manage your RAW files. It could be a very long time before Apple decides to support your camera.
Here's a freeware program that does a better job supporting new cameras than Apple -
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/imaging_3d/rawphotoprocessor.html
You may want to try this out and see if it support Pentax.

  • LR CC -Pentax Lens support??

I have just get the new LR CC. New features looks great... but...
I'm using Pentax Camera (yes... I do... )
And in the lens correction Panel, I don't see "Pentax" as an option. In the last version of LR (5) I have access to all Pentax Lenses, even the new one...
Is it something they have forget? Is it just me?

@dj_paige i think it's gone because the licence files were erased. yesterday when i uninstalled 5.7.1 trying to launch LR CC, i reinstalled it, clicked on "i have a licence" and the serial number prompt was allready filled (but with dots, no chance to write it down). Then, lightroom 5.7.1 disapeared from my creative cloud . i've downloaded the package from adobe and now, it ask for a serial number. i've tried the serial number "photography plan" you can find under your account section, but it don't match.
@canis_dirus_arctos  :  thanks for your moral support buddy well, i cannot work and i will be shot dead by my client....
My win7 64 system is very stable and smooth, with good hardware and nothing "special" installed. it runs photoshop and LR 5 like a charm.
    i've tried too :
    - changing my windows username
    - removing windows password
    - remove all adobe product (flash, air, acrobat reader, extension manager, ... ) then reinstall
    - remove windows firewall and antivirus software
    - disconnect everything, just mouse and keyboard
    - run in windows safe mode
i'm not ready to reinstall the whole system to see if it changes something ... and you ?

  • Pentax K100D u. Photoshop Elements 4

    Hallo zusammen,

  • New Cameras Supported

Many new cameras are now supported by Aperture:
    Hasselblad CFV-16, Hasselblad H3D-31, Hasselblad H3D-31II, Leaf Aptus 54S, Leaf Aptus 65S, Nikon D60, Olympus E-3, Pentax *ist DL2, Pentax *ist DS2, Pentax K100D Super, Sony DSLR-A200, Sony DSLR-A350
Here is where I found out:
    http://www.apertureprofessional.com/showthread.php?t=13338

I too switched to LR after Apple failed to support the E3 on the last update, but who knows? I've come to really like some of the LR features that I've not seen/used in Aperture before switching.

  • Can no longer play my videos (.avi) from my Pentax Camera.

    Please HELP.
I have been using my Pentax Digital point and shoot camera since 2008. I had no problems watching my videos (.avi) on I photo. They would upload and play as normal. Then all of a sudden about one year ago. They no longer play. The videos on my iphoto uploaded since them don't play, as well as the older ones. Now they dont even upload.
I have contacted pentax for support and they have no idea how it interfaces with iphoto. They suggestes VLO media browser. But id rather not have two diffrent applications for my media.
    What should I try?
Does Iphoto no longer recognize .avi??

Did this start after you upgraded to Snow Leopard?  Do you have Quicktime Player 7 installed on your Mac?  It would be in the Applications/Utilities folder if you do.  If not then download it from here: QuickTime Player 7.6.6 for Mac OS X v10.6.3.

  • Pentax K20D

We need Pentax K20D support. If anyone at Adobe needs to some RAW PEF or DNG
files to work with let me know. I would be happy to provide some. I
understand from Thomas Knoll that Pentax messed up the white balance in the
DNG files. The K10D also had white balance issues so I am hoping Adobe can
    work around this.

So far I love mine. My only complaint so far is that LiveView is bit strange
in that you can't focus. You either have to focus first, hold the camera
steady and then go in to LiveView or press the AF button while in LiveView
to cause it to drop the mirror, focus and the go back in to LiveView. So far
on mine I haven't been able to get it to focus in LiveView with the AF
button. When I have more time I am going to look in to this, I think I have
to set something in the menu to get that to work and it isn't set that way
by default. Either way there is a lot required in the way of not moving the
camera when you do all of these things. In the end I didn't buy the camera
for the LiveView and even if it wasn't a pain I still probably won't use it.
I could be wrong on that and time will tell, but is just seems more of a
gimmick right now than something really useful. Other than this, I love the
K20D. My Pentax 18-250 lives on it full time and my Pentax 10-17 fisheye
lives on my K10D full time. I carry both with me.

  • Pentax K30 - No exif lens info for jpg files

    Hi,
I'm using v5.2 now. But the issue is still not fixed.
For all jpg files from my Pentax K-30 no exif lens info is shown e.g. in the library view (regardless of the used lens). The lens info is only shown with raw (dng) files.
Curiously, for my old Pentax K100D all is working fine: lens info is shown with both jpg and raw files.
    How can I fix that?

Use "Software Update" to make sure you have the latest "Camera RAW".
If you do, report the bug to Apple using the Aperture feedback form:  "Aperture→Provide Aperture Feedback".

  • Imported pentax RAW files goes dark

    Hi,
I bought Aperture earlier today and have had nothing but problems importing my images (RAW images that is, jpg files are fine). In the preview where you choose which images to import they look ok (as shot/as in photoshop) but after import they go dark before my eyes (really dark, mb two full stops darker). I tried searching for a solution and found similar problems but no solutions to my specific problem.
    Setup:
    MBP 4,1
    OSX 10.6.7
    Aperture 3.1.2
    Pentax k100d super
After I installed Aperture even finder shows the raw files incorrectly (i tried opening one of the files in a lightroom trial and thats seems to work). Thanks in advance, i really want to like this program...

    Hi,
I have the same camera, and exactly the same problem. Could you solve this issue ?
About images of Pentax cameras looking dark in Aperture, many people mention "if Highlight Correction is enabled, the image is shot at -1 EV exposure compensation, and then everything but the highlights is pushed up in the camera when it makes the JPEG version" -- and thus the solution seems to be to disable this highlight correction. But to me it seems that there is no highlight correction in the k100d super...
Aperture 3 actually clips the histogram (dark pixels turn completely black) with respect to the same PEF file read with the Pentax Photo Lab app or the Gimp. The "Raw Fine Tuning" adjustements do not solve this.

  • Pentax Pocketjet II (and possibly other printers w/ Parallel to USB issues)

Leopard would not recognize my Pentax Pocketjet II printer. It was driving me insane. Called Pentax tech support, they were sympathetic but didn't really have an answer, other than to say that these printers were not originally designed for USB (they designed the converter cable after as a workaround) and that they did not give out a USB serial number in the way that more recent models would. And that perhaps the OS (Leopard) was not recognizing it because of that. Their drivers DID install (written for OS X but pre-Leopard) but my Macbook Pro did not recognize the physical existence of (or connection to) the printer. Anyway, to make a long story short, after trolling these boards for an hour, I found some references to people with HP printers with similar issues, and (god bless him) some guy posted a link to a program called USBTB -- and it worked beautifully! I'm posting the link below. And, if it works for you (as it did for me), by all means -- BUY THE KID LUNCH!!!

  • Lightroom Camera Profile quick question

Think I know where the problem lies. Pentax K100D recognised in Library metadata but not in Develop ... profile.
Can someone please check their (Windows) computer for me?
         Program Data/Adobe/CameraRaw/CameraProfiles/Camera
I don't have my camera appearing in that folder even though Adobe's online doc for supported models includes it.
I've upgraded from LR 2 to 3 and then to 3.3    Suspecting that it hasn't upgraded properly. If someone else has the K100D sitting merrily in their list, I guess it's uninstall and try again.
    Many thanks

I don't have the K100D either.  Not all cameras have camera-matching profiles.

  • RAW Format Not Recognized

I just bought a new Pentax K100D Super over the holidays. Love the camera.
I am shopping around for software to use for digital developing. I have downloaded both trail versions of Adobe Lightroom and Apple Aperture (v1.5.6).
I want to use the RAW format for my pictures and it works fine with Lightroom, but Aperture does not seem to like the Pentax RAW format (.PEF). Aperture shows the image thumbnail before I import off the camera but once I have imported the pictures off the camera, Aperture does not recognize them, reporting "unsupported image format" According to the Aperture support website, it is supposed to support the RAW format of the Pentax K100D Super.
I have tried restarting Aperture, the computer, deleted the Aperture .plist file, formating the memory card in the camera.
I had a K100D (non-Super) for one day before I returned it for the Super, Aperture does recognize the RAW pictures taken with the non-Super version on the K100D.
I don't know what else to try, does anyone have any ideas. I like the Aperture software but at this point looks like I'll have to go the Lightroom.
    Please help.

Yes, I have done that and it works, so thats a relief, though its not a perfect solution because I have to do some more steps to my workflow, it works, so it saved my day. I used the adobe DNG Converter to do the conversion. At first it didn`t work, so you need to make sure that you have the right settings: not compressed dng and not embed the original raw file into the dng. But now it works great, the only thing you don`t get is auto noise reduction in the raw fine tuning. I tried a automator workflow I found, but A2 wouldn`t accept the dng files, so I have to investigate that further.
So with the improved performance and new features I will upgrade to Aperture 2.0.
