Pentax K10D Users

Hello,
As of now, I know that Aperture does not support the Pentax K10D RAW formats (neither DNG or PEF). I was wondering if anyone had a work-around to somehow convert the DNG images off the camera to a more universal version of DNG that may work in Aperture? I attempted using Adobe's DNG converter, but the files it produces show up as tiny jpgs in Aperture, and export as tiny jpegs as well. Anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks!

Although some parts that make up CoreImage need updating for getting new cameras to work, a whole system update isn't required per se, as Apple proved with their Digital Camera RAW Support Update (www.apple.com/aperture) - it provided support for new cameras outside of any system update.
I think the reason for the long waiting time is that Apple wants the best renderings they can achieve, and fine-tuning the various parameters takes time. It took them more than 6 months to support the Pentax *ist DS but the results are, in my opinion, well worth the wait.
Since most new camera models by Nikon and Canon are now supported by Aperture, I'd guess that the Pentax K10D and in particular the K100D are up next.
Cheers,
Karl

  • DNG files from Pentax k10d in iPhoto?

I have just stated shooting with my new Pentax k10d. A great camera that are able to save not only pentax RAW (PEF) but also DNG files. My old camera is a Canon 300D, I have been using iPhoto 6 as organizer and intend do so even now.
I thought that iPhoto supported DNG, but it can not read any file other than jpeg from the k10d! Really frustating.
Do I have to wait for an update, and for how long? Is there anybody out there who knows?

    Martinst:
We have no idea when or if iPhoto will support DNG files. They seem to be preferred by many professional photographers for a number of reasons. We'll just have to wait for iLife 07 to see what iPhoto has added.
However, have you downloaded the Digital Camera RAW Support Update 1.0.1 (PPC). It includes some DNG support.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • .DNG support for Pentax K10D

Has anyone heard whether Aperture is going to support DNG for the Pentax K10D anytime in the near future?
It's a bummer not being able to just hook up the camera and go. The converter in CS2 is getting old and I'd like to be able to preview and back them up as I go.
Note: I tend to take rumors seriously...feel free to muse.

by the way, instead of asking users who actually
don't have any true insight into the Aperture
development team's agenda about support for your
camera, have you thought of sending a request through
the Aperture feedback web site? this will get the
idea in front of a lot of people who are actually
    working on the application
Camera raw stuff is not handled by Aperture, and therefore I assume also not by the Aperture team. The camera raw facilities are system wide, to the whole OS and the services are provided through the Apple Digital Camera Raw updates such as this...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/digitalcamerarawsupportupdate101universal .html
These updates are global to OSX and provide the camera raw services to any application running under OSX. Aperture is a consumer of these services in the same way that any other application is.

  • Support for Pentax K10D - Estimated date?

Any guesses as to when the next update will take place?
I'm using a trial version of aperture, porefer it to the Adobe line, but Adobe sure is quick with its upgrades. It just added the K10D for RAW support while I'm still waiting for Apple.
    Thanks.

We K10D users are still in limbo. I tried the demo of Lightroom 1.0. Works pefrectly with K10D PEF files!! So does the Adobe DNG Converter (3.7) application now on Adobe's website.
Alas, I have tried every option for converting Pentax K10D PEF to an Adobe dng and still can't see them in Aperture.
Please Apple, save me from Adobe!

  • Pentax K10D firmware update causes lens recognition failure

I've previously posted about this in the ACR forum, and raised a feature request there:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bb6a85c.3bc423bc
Barry Clive Pearson, "+ Camera Raw Feature Requests +" #284, 11 Jun 2007 9:00 am
(#284 in the feature request thread).
Please cater for the new 3-byte Tag63 in the Pentax K10D Makernote, so that lenses can once again be identified in relevant Adobe software.
This isn't simply a request for a new feature. It is a request that Adobe restores an existing feature that has been disrupted by the Pentax K10D 1.20 firmware upgrade. Therefore, I've also started a new thread on the ACR forum in case any Pentax users are puzzled about this regression.
Example of the change: old Tag63: 04 FE; new Tag63: 04 FE 00. The effect is that the DNG LensInfo is now not set up correctly, and the XMP exif/1.0/aux namespace information is not set up at all. So the real name of the lens is not shown.

  • Samsung GX-10 and Pentax K10D RAW support?

I recently bought a Samsung GX-10 thinking it was essentially the same camera as the Pentax K10D (which is it in hardware). However, it appears that the RAW images cannot be read in Aperture or iPhoto, even thought the K10D is listed as supported. The RAW files are .DNG which I thought was some kind of standard. To make matters worse, Samsung doesn't even provide any of it's own Mac software, so I currently have no way to read its RAW files at all. Doesn't anyone know if/when Apple will add support for the GX-10?
    Thanks in advance.

yeah,, I know about raw data , and yes, wrong or not, the rendition of gx-10 pictures are very "bad"  compared with other softwares and with my eyes, and I think that you can understand when i said "bad" no?, there aren't a wrong or correct in raw color but the people speaks about the wrong o correct colors all the time, i think that you understand when speak about  bad colors, a bad WB , etc.
I know that i can make my own profile but is not easy, to generate a good profile I need a  Macbeth ColorChecker or something like that for example and precise sources of light (like a tungsten) and taking account about that samsung cameras are "clones" of the pentax ones and that samsung shoots in DNG format (and not a propietary raw format)  seems easy solve the problem about color interpretation of GX-10. With time I will buy a color-checker and try, but would be great a correct interpretaion of the own samsung colors
PD2: When i know about samsung "adobe-DNG" capacity, i didn't expect have problems with adobe soft and color intrepretation or something like that.
PD: Sorry , I don't speak english  well, and so I can't express me very well , only basics

  • Pentax K10D: Camera profiles, "ACR 4.x" vs "Pentax 1.00". Which one is broken?

Hardware: Pentax K10D, use DNG raw format.
Software: Pgotoshop CS3, ACR 4.5, Windows.
ACR allows me to select one of four profiles:
    (1) ACR 4.4
    (2) ACR 3.7
    (3) Embedded
    (4) Pentax 1.00
And results of this selection is dramatic. And strange, too.
I have one shot with XRtie ColorChecker.
I select "ACR 4.4" (default) profile and set white balance by second gray patch in raw (18% gray) with White Balance Tool. Color temperature is 8000 and tint is -20. Ok.
I select "ACR 3.7" profile, repeat WBT, and get same results. Ok.
I select "Pentax 1.00" profile, and get.... Temperature 11500K and Tint +75!
I know, that profiles change color rendering. It is ok.
But why these two (ACR 4.4 and 3.7 is almost the same) profiles change color rendering SO DIFFERENTLY? Color temperature is universal number, daylight is about 5500K, good flash is always 5500K, D65 light source is 6500K (6504K), etc.
I thought, that good profile should give good neutrals, and in case of controlled light, calculated (by gray patch) color temperature should correspond to light source.
I understand, that different profiles could render skin tones, cyans, shadows and highlights slightly differently, and there are many discussions, which profile is better. But 3500K difference is not "slight difference" and is not question like "I like skin tones with this profile more that ones with another"! Am I right?
It seems, that one of profiles is broken. Which one? Why difference is so huge?

Essentially embedded was broken, not in the colors, but in the white balance mappings. There was an issue with the white balance values in the profiles originally embedded in the Pentax DNG files. As long as you do a click-WB __AFTER__ choosing your profile, the actual colors should be fine (but won't and aren't expected to match the ACR 4.4/3.7 rendering exactly).

  • Pentax K10D and iPod connect

I'm going on a trip and am wondering if my Pentax K10D's USB cable will work with the Digital Camera > iPod connector at the apple store.
    Thanks!

Well it's not on Apple's list of tested cameras, but that doesn't mean to say it wont work.
    http://www.apple.com/ipod/compatibility/cameraconnector.html
Maybe if you visit an Apple store they'll let you try it out?

  • White Balance Failure, Pentax K10D

I'm a very experienced computer user/photographer with a very simple, but crippling Aperture problem:
White balance. . .doesn't. Using the eye-dropper, either on a spot I'd like to neutralize, or on a known gray target, produces a white balance that's several points too green.
128/128/128 comes out as 128/132/128, etc. Looking at the green-magenta slider shows it pinned all the way to the right on magenta. This happens with either DNG or PEF masters.
It does NOT happen using my Canon 5D files, or my colleague's Nikon captures, leading me to suspect that Apple has somehow come up with a crappy profile for the Pentax. I know Lightroom and ACR had similar early problems with K10D files and white balance.
I've tried all the usual voodoo cures--deleting prefs, reinstalling, etc. Anyone else having this problem? How would I make this known to the Aperture team? I can't seem to find any email support choices in the Apple.com support area?
Anyone have any ideas? Now that I'm mainly using Pentaxes, I'd like Aperture to, I dunno, just work.

Just out of curiosity, have you tried shooting in DNG rather than PEF? I know the file size is much larger, but if the WB and exposure was more accurate it would be worth it to me. I'll try some experiments later.
Yesterday I profiled my K10D with a Gretag MacBeth ColorChecker and a script for Adobe Camera Raw. The idea is to see how the default ACR RAW conversion compares with known values from a GTMB ColorChecker. I was able to calibrate ACR (and thus Lightroom since it uses ACR) to give me very accurate color with the K10D.
However, when I open the RAW exposure of the ColorChecker in Aperture, the exposure (white patch), tonality (grey patches) and colors are really, really far off. I know color is very subjective, but man, I wish Aperture was a little more in the ball park with this one.
I still prefer Aperture to LR, so I hope there's some way to remedy this in the future.

  • My pentax k10d will not show up in finder in os 10.7.2

    hello
i brought a new macbook pro and went to read off the sd card via the camrea and it will not show up in finder i dont have a sd slot on my mac so does anyone have a fix for me
thanks for you help (in advance)

I've never know a camera to show up in the finder. only the card if it was in a card reader.  To import the images off the card in the camera  use Image Capture or iPhoto if you have it.

  • Flagging Pentax Images in Adobe Bridge

I just replaced my Pentax K10D with a K20D to act as a backup to my K7 since its features better parallel those of the K7. When I started to edit, in Adobe Bridge CS4, my first pictures taken with the K20D, I found that I could not set any labels (red, yellow, green, etc.) or ratings (1 star, 2 stars, etc.) to them. Is there some option set in the camera and carried over in the metadata which would prevent such modification or ranking? Or is this a Bridge problem requiring a setup or option change?
(I have also posted this in the Pentax forums.)

Good thought, but I don't think that is the issue. I can label my Pentax K7 photos with this version of Bridge, and it is a newer camera. I can also flag the K20D photos on my laptop, the very ones I cannot flag on my desktop (the reason for the first posting). I had the problem on my desktop this morning before going off to my day job but didn't have time to explore further. I posted my query at lunch time thinking there might be a simple explanation like an option not set correctly. I did further testing once I got back this evening. I am beginning to think it's my version of XP Professional on my desktop which is giving me a variety of different problems (right-clicking on a file in Windows Explorer shuts down the application, for instance). It's going to be upgraded to Windows 7 shortly; but I'm living with it for now. As an IT professional for over 40 years, I have seen my share of really weird software problems. This one is probably not worth any further effort until I make the change to Windows 7. Thanks for your response.

  • Photos not importing raw pef ( pentax raw ) files

    Hi,
recently updated my 2010 macbook pro to the latest version of mavericks.
All my previously imported files are there - jpg, and raw, but trying to import some new photos it seems that only jpg's are being imported.
My pentax k10d is set to save in pef format as they are smaller than the adobe format raw photos.
Does anyone have any ideas how to import raw?
The saved photos on the sd card have the same name for both raw and jpg - only the extension is different.
I've checked in photos to see if there is a raw file 'behind' the jpg but the options for reprocessing raw and 'use raw as original' are greyed out. I can see that all the files are on the sd card in finder - I even tried dragging the raw files to the photos app from finder with no success.
    Thanks,
    Mark

The RAW files of your camera are supported by MacOS X 10.10.x.
My pentax k10d is set to save in pef format as they are smaller than the adobe format raw photos.
That may be the problem. For some supported cameras only the uncompressed RAW files are supported.  Have you tried to take a picture with uncompressed RAW? Will that be imported by Photos?

  • Can I use the Pentax K20D raw profile for the Samsung GX-20?

    Hi,
I have just got a Samsung Gx-20 (clone of a Pentax K20d). When I import Raw images to aperture they are extremely flat and colourless. I can import the same raw images to Adobe Lightroom and get excellent results so I know the data that I want is in the raw file.
Since I was getting good results from the pentax k10d profile in aperture I'm sure aperture is capable, but doesn't know the camera.
Is there some kind of plist or somesuch that I can edit so that the system will process the raw files from my camera as though they came from a k20d, and therefore hopefully solve my problem.
I don't want to migrate to lightroom as it doesn't have the ilife integration I enjoy.
    Thanks in advance.

    there is an easier way:
    1. Go to the RAW Fine Tuning Brick in the Adjustments Inspector with one of the images from the K20D selected, and- remembering the original setting- change any setting.
    2. click on the cog/gear and choose save as preset and name it.
    3. Select one of the images from the gx20, click on the cog/gear again and choose the preset you just created.
    4. Now change back the setting you changed in step 1, click on the cog/gear again and choose "Save as Camera Default.
I swear, it took five times as long to type that as will to actually do it.

  • Elements 3.0 & raw with K10D

I'm affraid I've read so much in this forum that I've become confused about compatibility. I have the Pentax K10D and Elements 3. Can someone tell me if version 3.6 of camera raw will work with the K10d and Elements 3. My eyes are starting to bleed from all the reading. Please help....Thanks...Mike

However, since DNG is supported by the version of ACR that you have with
Elements 3.0 if you shoot in DNG with the Pentax K10D you should have no
trouble working with the images in your version of ACR. Also, as a side note
the K10D (I have this camera myself) doesn't compress the DNG files only the
PEF files so I run all of my DNG files through Adobe's free DNG Converter
program with the lossless compression option on. I find this reduces the DNG
    files sizes by about half.

  • Pentax Shake Reduction state in EXIF info?

Could anyone using a Pentax K10D tell me how to check whether SR was on or off when a picture was taken? It should be contained somewhere in the EXIF info, but I don't find it. Is it possible that this tag is ignored?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the tip. I've just downloaded Exiftool and tried it on my raw files. It does show the SR state. According to my quick tests, the SR info is there in the PEF and DNG files out of the camera, in the DNG files converted by Lightroom but not in the JPG files exported by Lightroom.
So, the information is there. Would be nice if Lightroom showed it.
