Pentax K3 RAW file

I recently bought a PANTAX K3, but I could not open the RAW file by CS5 Bridge Camera RAW. I have checked the 'Help' without any result in downloading the updated method.

The Pentax K-3 was supported for the first time by ACR 8.3 which requires at least Photoshop 13.x (CS6) or higher.
As CS5 is no longer supported, it will never get an ACR update. You will never be able to open raw files from that camera directly in CS5.
You need to update to at least CS6 (CC will work too of course), or you can use the latest version of the free, stand-alone Adobe DNG converter with which you can convert your PEF files first to DNG files that yopu can then open in CS5—as long as you don't mind nissing the superior rendering and other features of ACR 8.3 and higher. Your choice.

"RAW" is a generic term for unprocessed photo from a camera. No camera that I know of makes files like "filename.raw". Each camera brand that shoots RAW photos has their own file name. I think for a Nikon it is "filename.nef". For my Sony, it is "filename.arw".

Think of it as a translator that can make unprocessed camera data as viewable. ACR marches through version numbers as new cameras are produced. Adobe has tried to answer that by introducing a "generic" RAW format called "DNG" and free Adobe software called "Digital Negative Converter" that uses the same structure as ACR. The purpose is to convert any camera manufacturer's format to the generic format. In a perfect world that is only focused on the user, the entire world would adopt DNG like happened to .jpg. In other words, life would be easier if all cameras shot .dng files like they do .jpg.
If the Pentax KIIs shoots .dng files, I am impressed. I've not heard of any other brand doing that. Nikon, Canon, Sony and Panasonic have not gone there.

Pentax K110D RAW .PEF Format No Go

Hi All,
I bought a Pentax K110D. iPhoto won't read it's RAW .PEF files either, under 10.4.7 or 10.4.8. Pentax does provide management software, but it adds an extra step.
Do any of you know how to get iPhoto to work with Pentax .PEF RAW files?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. If the Pentax is not supported by OS X then you'll have to use another image management application that does support it's raw format. Only one Pentax camera is listed as supported.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

Pentax RAW file photos do not display correcty in LR

Using Macbook Pro, OS X 10.8.5
Lightroom version 5.7, Raw 8.7
Camera Pentax K7
Lightroom does not seem to be able to display Pentax RAW files correctly. Colours are unnatural, muddy and lacking in yellow. Pictures are lacking detail and look muzzy. Preview displays RAW photos fine with correct colour cast and pictures are clear with plenty of detail. Photos processed from RAW to Jpeg using Pentax's digital camera utility, then imported to LR library display perfectly. LR doesn't seem to be able to handle Pentax RAW files, despite being listed as a supported file on Adobe list of compatible file types. Even iPhoto does a better job than LR.
What;s going on Lightroom people? Do I have to manually activate some sort of plug-in?

As ssprengel suggested try setting your Penatx K7 to DNG raw file format, which will embed a custom camera profile that LR will use. If your results with LR's default camera calibration settings (i.e. 0) are still unsatisfactory I suggest calibrating (or recalibrating) your display with an i1 Display or Spyder hardware device. I wouldn't even attempt to make fine adjustments to image files on a system with an uncalibrated display–You simply will be "misadjusting" the image to correct for display errors.
For best results the display should be hardware calibrated to create a monitor profile with 6500 K Color Temperature, 2.2 Gamma, and 120 cd/m2 Luminance. If you've already done this try recalibrating the display using the above suggested settings.
If your results still look "off-target" after hardware calibration I would suggest investing in a ColorChecker Passport and use it's LR Plugin application to create a custom camera profile. You'll will still need to measure and adjust the LR White Balance (WB) settings, which can be easily done using the ColorChecker Passport neutral patches or its White Balance target.

Pentax Super K100D RAW files not recognised by Lightroom

Hi all
Have tried to import Pentax .PEF files (RAW format) into Adobe Lightroom and via Adobe Bridge...no luck. It works with JPEG files, but I don't WANT to shoot in JPEG format!
Have reformatted the camera memory card, have 90GB left on my HD to perform the import, and the camera, computer and software is all current and updated.
I downloaded RAW Developer, and lo and behold, IT recognises the files and works on the RAW files with no problem...so it's not the camera, or the computer.
Everything is operating on a Mac OSX 10.4.1 (we don't have Leopard in Australia yet).
Any ideas/help appreciated.
FYI - I am operating Lightroom in TRIAL mode. Haven't purchased yet - and won't be until I can sort out this problem!

The 100D Super is new camera. There's always a delay between a new camera launch and Adobe providing support for the RAW profile.
You'll also see that OS X Tiger doesn't support it yet either: http://www.apple.com/aperture/raw/cameras.html.

While the G9 RAW files can be read by Adobe Camera RAW and Lightroom, these file are unsupported at this time. Here is a link to Adobe's latest list of cameras that are supported and this list came out yesterday http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html
I have not done a comparison between Lightroom and Canon's software but others have and say that Canon's software is clearly better. I am sure when Adobe updates their software again to include the G9 it will be a very good RAW converter as it is will most other cameras.

Photos not importing raw pef ( pentax raw ) files

Hi,
recently updated my 2010 macbook pro to the latest version of mavericks.
All my previously imported files are there - jpg, and raw, but trying to import some new photos it seems that only jpg's are being imported.
My pentax k10d is set to save in pef format as they are smaller than the adobe format raw photos.
Does anyone have any ideas how to import raw?
The saved photos on the sd card have the same name for both raw and jpg - only the extension is different.
I've checked in photos to see if there is a raw file 'behind' the jpg but the options for reprocessing raw and 'use raw as original' are greyed out. I can see that all the files are on the sd card in finder - I even tried dragging the raw files to the photos app from finder with no success.

The RAW files of your camera are supported by MacOS X 10.10.x.
My pentax k10d is set to save in pef format as they are smaller than the adobe format raw photos.
That may be the problem. For some supported cameras only the uncompressed RAW files are supported. Have you tried to take a picture with uncompressed RAW? Will that be imported by Photos?

Opening Pentax Raw files

I have iPhoto 5.0.4 on a iMac G5 running OSX 10.4.10. The system has 1 gb of ram.
Can not seem to open the pentax raw format in iPhoto 5. I tried to update the program with the October 06 update for raw files, which included pentax, but it gage the error message that I must have OSX 10.8.
Any ideas/
Also, I am wondering if anyone is also runninga iMac G5 1.8 PPC and has had success with iMovie in iLife '08. The minimum specs say I need a 1.9 processor, which is close...

Your camera is not supported by any version of ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) that will work with CS4. You will never be able to open those files directly in CS4, as there will be no further ACR updates for CS4, ever.
You have two choices:
1.-- Upgrade to CS6; or
2.-- Download the latest version (at least 7.1) of the free, stand-alone Adobe DNG Converter and convert all your raw NEF files to raw DNG files which you can then open in CS4.

Cant import raw files from pentax k20d

I have a Pentax k20d and iPhoto6 will only import JPGs. iPhoto will not import RAW files from my camera. I can't find if its supported but can only assume its not.

You'd think that apple would add raw file compatibility with the next of its numerous iphoto 6 updates...
I wouldn’t think that at all. Iphoto 6 has not been developed since 2006, nor updated since 2006. I would not expect any further enhancement to it.

It’s not just the Pentax. Those RAW options are there in everyone’s iPhoto 6 and later. However, RAW formats differ not just between brands of Camera but also between different models of the same Brand. So, RAW support is added on a model by model basis and not all models are supported. The K20D was announced in January 2008. The RAW format you want supported didn’t even exist when the iPhoto 6 was in development or the current version of the application.
Further, as RAW support is a function of the Operating System, and involves a patch to the OS, it was added to the OS current at the time - 10.5.

Imported pentax RAW files goes dark

Hi,
I bought Aperture earlier today and have had nothing but problems importing my images (RAW images that is, jpg files are fine). In the preview where you choose which images to import they look ok (as shot/as in photoshop) but after import they go dark before my eyes (really dark, mb two full stops darker). I tried searching for a solution and found similar problems but no solutions to my specific problem.

After I installed Aperture even finder shows the raw files incorrectly (i tried opening one of the files in a lightroom trial and thats seems to work). Thanks in advance, i really want to like this program...

I have the same camera, and exactly the same problem. Could you solve this issue ?
About images of Pentax cameras looking dark in Aperture, many people mention "if Highlight Correction is enabled, the image is shot at -1 EV exposure compensation, and then everything but the highlights is pushed up in the camera when it makes the JPEG version" -- and thus the solution seems to be to disable this highlight correction. But to me it seems that there is no highlight correction in the k100d super...
Aperture 3 actually clips the histogram (dark pixels turn completely black) with respect to the same PEF file read with the Pentax Photo Lab app or the Gimp. The "Raw Fine Tuning" adjustements do not solve this.

Raw Files from Pentax ist D L Camera

I have chosen the RAW format for pictures I have taken on the camera but am having trouble downloading from the camera to Adobe Photoshop Elements 4. It says APE will handle RAW files but it doesn't seem to work for me. Does anyone out there have any suggestions? Is there something I may have missed. I am using the usual procedure as for all other photos.

Unable to import RAW files from my 400D, (XTi) Even if its a supported cam

Hi,
I have been unable to upload RAW files from my Canon XTi, a.k.a. 400D. I know this camera is supported and I am running Mac OS X 10.4.8 on an Intel Core Duo Mac Book.
iPhoto had no issues with my previous Canon 350D raw files, yet its not working with the 400D. Is very likely a matter of installing an update, yet when i tried to install the ppl version it stated that this was not to be installed on this system. Would there be an update specific for Intel based machines to support the 400d?
Has anyone experienced this same issue that would like to share in their resolution? This would definetively be appreciated.
