People I call say I sound muffled on my IPhone 5

People say I am muffled when I call them on my IPhone 5.  Had the same problem so Apple gave me a new phone but this one is the same.  I am with Verizin and no one else in my family (all on the same) have this issue

When you hold the phone do you put your hand over the microphone on the bottom of the phone?

When I talk to others on my phone, they say I sound muffled.  Is there anyway to change this?  A setting I should switch to?

    Hi, Sodepop1976.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Here is an I would recommend taking a look at when experiencing microphone issues.  Make sure to clear any debris from the microphone.

  • Certain People I Call say my Bluetooth is Clipping

    This is repeatable every time.
If I use my Plantronics-510 Bluetooth headset and call my friend "Y" cell fone, then she tells me my speech is so "Chopped" or Clipped, that it's too hard to understand me. IF I switch immediately to my Plantronics-310 or the wired goody which came with the iPhone 3-G, then my speech is fine.
I can turn around and immediately call "RR" who is mobile in another part of the US and use the P-510 and get a good audio report.
If "RR" calls us at home while mobile and using his Bluetooth headset, then, no matter which brand of home-fone we use, his speech is terribly Clipped.
This seems related to Mobile use of Bluetooth and not specific to any manufacturer of either Wireless-Headset nor Cell-Fone brand.
Anyone done any studies on this .... it's terribly aggravating and totally shuts down a conversation, often with a customer unfortunately.
However, that said, I got no complaints of my Plantronics before buying the iPhone in December.

Have you by any chance covered the little hole at the top of the phone or is there any dirt in it?

  • I can hear people on call but sometimes they can't hear me, it maybe fine for afew mins but then sound drops again? Anyone have this problem and find a solution? Thanks.

I have an Iphone 4 13.5 GB, iOS 7.1.2. Currently when I make a call or someone calls me, I can hear people on call perfectly but sometimes they can't hear me. It maybe fine for afew mins but then sound drops again? Anyone have this problem and find a solution? Thanks.

I have taken it back to the Apple store genius bar, but they say they don't see anything wrong. Well unless you use it all day and experience the problems when they happen, you wont see anything wrong. But there are lots wrong with it. But this would be the same store as I purchased the phone. And they backed up my old Iphone 4, but were not able to get anything to load back onto my new phone. So, I lost pretty much everything. But over time, some of my contacts have started showing up, although i am still missing over 800 of them.

  • When I try to use FaceTime on my Macbook Air, I try to verify the email I want people to call me with, and it says verified, but soon an message comes up that says "Could not verify the email address. Please check your network connection and try again."

So our school lets us use Macbook Airs for the school year, and it has facetime on it. I know facetime isn't blocked because like everyone else is using it. So I decide to give it a try. I click the icon, it says enter your apple ID. I dont have one, so I click to make one, and do so. I then enter my apple ID and click next. The screen reads "People will call you using your email address. What email address would you like to use?" I enter my email address in the box below the message, and then go to my email and click the link, and sign in, thus verifying the email. I go back to the facetime window, and click next. At the top it says Verified, but when I click next it doesn't go on to the next step, it simply blacks out the next button so that I can not click it, and after a few minutes a message comes up that says "Could not verify the email address. Please check your network connection and try again."
So that is the issue, please help!!!!!
*Note-I repeat that I know it is not blocked by the school because everyone else uses it just fine.*

    Hello BassoonPlayer,
Since you are using one of the the school's Macbooks, it is quite possible that the time and date are not properly set on the computer that you are using.  FaceTime will not work if you do not have the proper time zone set up for the location that you are in.  This past week, there were a two other Macbook users I've helped by simply telling them to set the Date/Time properly.  By the way, you described your problem very well, which makes it easier for us to help you.  Hope this solves your problem -- if not, post back and I can suggest other remedies.

  • Callers say my voice sounds muffled when using bluetooth.

I have a motorola bluetooth h710/h715 and as soon as I got the iphone 4, everyone is telling my I sound muffled when using it, compared to my 3gs. Anyone else have this issue?

Can a few of you help me with a test? I have a Jawbone 2 & a Jawbone Icon. Both exhibit a strange behavior with my iPhone 4. If either of these headsets are on, paired & connected AND a call is answered or initiated, things are fine.
When it all goes downhill is in this scenario:
My headset is OFF. I receive or make a call and mid-call, I decide to turn on the headset (which I keep off to save battery). The Jawbone connects and automatically switches the iPhone from PHONE to JAWBONE. This is all normal right? Okay here's the problem. The call quality has static, sounds muffled and the caller tells me I sound like I'm in a tin can. If I then switch back to the phone (through the iPhone page of Sources) and then back again, to the Jawbone, most times--quality is back to normal. Obviously this is not something we all want to be doing. Can anyone do this test with their headset .. any brand and even some of you with Icons? It would be good to know if the culprit is the Bluetooth Headset or the iPhone. Remember, it's important that you make a call with your Bluetooth headset in the OFF position and then turn it on mid-call to use it.

My phone randomly doesn't ring when people call and not sound the text alert. I checked all the settings and them seem to be correct. Sometimes it rings, many times it doesn't. I have missed several calls. Same with texts. Anyone know how to fix this?

    Symptoms
    No ringer sound
Go to Settings > Sounds > Ringtone and select a ringtone. Does the device ring? (YES: Issue resolved) (NO: Go to step 2)
Go to Settings> General> Reset> Erase All Content and Settings. Warning: This will delete all user data on the device. Verify that you have a backup before proceeding. Go to Settings > Sounds > Ringtone and select a ringtone. Does the device ring? (YES: Issue resolved) (NO: Go to step 3)
Restore device using latest version of iTunes. Go to Settings > Sounds > Ringtone and select a ringtone. Does the device ring? (YES: Issue resolved) (NO: Contact Apple for service options)

  • When people call me they sound robotic

I have looked for as much information as I can. I just downloaded skype today (again). I had to wipe my computer last night. it worked before I put windows 7 on. Today when people call me they sound "robotic" or "chipmunk" like. ONLY when they call me. If I call them it works fine. What could be the cause of this?

or how can I fix this i'm still having this problem

  • IPhone 4 - I sound muffled / quiet to other person in FaceTime

    Hi all,
I know this has been asked before, but the previous posts seem about a year old so I thought if I'd see if there's any progress.
Basically, I use my iPhone 4 to FaceTime my parents sometimes, when I'm not using my MacBook, but what they've told me is that I sound quiet / muffled on their end. We've both tried turning our volumes up and making sure nothing is clogged up with pocket lint, and obviously making sure we don't have our hands over any mics / speakers, but still I sound muffled at their end. I can hear them just fine and there is no problem when talking on the phone normally (a phonecall, not FaceTime).
I've seen people have just had their phones replaced in previous posts. Is this still an issue now or has there been a development since?
    Thanks in advance!

When I hold my iPhone 5S in my left hand to my left ear the sound is muffled. I remember Steve Jobs saying you're holding it wrong. Although this had nothing to do with the problem we're having now it got me to thinking. I looked at my hand holding the iPhone my thumb was on the left edge with my to two Center fingers on the right edge. My index finger was up close to the noise canceling mic on the back of the phone and my palm was down by the regular mic.  I could see as I talked the voice could hit my palm travel up my hand to my index finger which was close to the microphone on the back.
I called my wife on the house phone using my iPhone 5S. She said that my voice was muffled. I took my index finger away from the microphone and moved it next to my two Center fingers on the right side of the phone. This moved my palm away from the microphone at the bottom. I did this while she stayed on the line. She said that now she could hear me clearly. I then moved my index finger to completely cover the back microphone. Once again she said that the sound was still good. I then moved my index finger a small amount away from the microphone and she said that my voice was muffled again.
I believe that the way I was holding my hand acted as a megaphone to the noise canceling microphone in the back. The noise canceling microphone thought my voice was noise and was suppressing it.
I work in a noisy environment, so I like the idea of the noise canceling microphone. Going to the settings and turning off the noise canceling microphone or putting a small piece of tape over the microphone is really not a good option for me.
For now I will use this new way of holding the phone until Apple can fix this issue.

  • I can't make calls. I try to call and it just stays at the "calling mobile" screen I can't receive calls either yet people can call me?

This has just recently happened to me i've experienced this once before but briefly and it went away, now I'm on vacation (still in Canada) I'm from Vancouver and i am in toronto, and this has now happened since I arrived off the airplan. I'm seriously unimpressed with this, I had the iPhone 3GS before this iPhone4s and never had any problems with it, what concerns me the most is that in case of an emergancy I have no way to call for help, so this needs to be solved and solved quickly, I'm asking this question publicly before I get rid of this phone and get a smart phone which would be bad since I buy gucci accessories and cases for my iPhone, so here is you're last chance to help me and convince me to stay with apple,
Also I forgot to mention that people can call me with no problem but when I answer I hear absolutely nothing, yet I've been told that they can hear me, my Internet works (obviously) and my texting works just not receiving calls or making outgoing calls.
Please respond here because I'm on vacation for another week and I cannot contact anyone via calls only via texts,
Some help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank You,
    Alexander.

Hmm... both microphones are free from obstruction? The mic on top next to headphone jack and the the mic on the bottom...
Try restting as a new device and see if that corrects the issue... You must backup your data first.

This will rule out any possible software issue, possibly with the receiver of the phone....especially if the issue continues when you return to a known area where you have no issues. I would normally say try the speaker phone to see if they can hear you but it doesn't sound like you can even get that far. If the issue persists you may have a hardware issue and will likely have to take the phone in for service.

  • I can hear people I call but when I speak, intermittently, people can't hear me

I can hear people I call, but intermittently, by which I mean sometimes or on and off they can't hear me speak. I have tested the mike by recording a voice message and there is nothing wrong with the mike. I took the first blackberry back and I could not get it to malfunction in the shop but they gave me a new one anyway.
New phone, same problem, I am talking and people say "I can't hear you" and then the sound comes back. It is impossible to hold a phone conversation. I hate this rubbish phone with all this fancy stuff BUT IT'S USELESS AS A BASIC PHONE BECAUSE I CAN'T HAVE A PHONE CONVERSATION.
Two new "phones" but same problem.
Must be a design problem with Blackberry Curve 8520 "Smartphone"... yeah, right, as smart as a brick.
And I am stuck in a 2 year contract with Orange.
Any ideas, anyone, other than a hammer?

I had the exact same problem!! People intermittently couldn't hear me on a call, but I could hear them fine! Went into Apple and explained the situation, said I had full signal, I used a case so it couldn't be a signal issue, said it wasn't my face touching the mute button, which I know people have been having problems with, I checked whilst on the call and that wasn't it...the lady on the genius bar looked at me like I was a nutter, I think she thought I was just trying to get a new phone...but I'd only had it 3 weeks....the phone was in pristine condition no scratches, no nothing! Anyway she tried to explain to me in the most patronising way that it wouldn't be a hardware problem, that it was something to do with the software?!? So then she wanted to test it and obviously the problem wouldn't happen, the phone worked fine and she said take it away, if the problem persists come back in two weeks....well I went crazy and said that this is ridiculous the principle point of this phone is for making and receiving calls and it is no use to me if it can't do that!! She agreed and still said take it home and come back when it happens! I refused and said it was ridiculous, I love Apple and they really do look after their customers but I was angry that I couldn't prove...anyway she then begrudgingly went and got a new handset, this one has been perfect so far...so best thing to do is go into the apple store and just persist and they should give in, I'd really like to know what the problem is, If it was me, a software or hardware problem...if anyone finds out!!
