"People" tag not recognised, have 14,000 photo's to organise, please help!

Hi, I have just moved to PSE 8 from Windows Live Gallery (Windows Vista, then Windows 7)
Windows Live Gallery stores metadata in the photos, it puts things like places, events etc as "tags" which PSE8 see's fine, but I have 14,000 photo's tagged with peoples names and Windows Gallery stores them as "people" in the metadata and PSE8 doesn't see that so doesn't import the tag
PLEASE tell me there's a way around this??!!!
here's an example:

Ah, the ambiguity of "tag".  I was referring to the number of distinctly named People tags, not the number of photos with the tags.  So the procedure for converting the WLPG tags would be:
1. Pick the next distinctly named People tag, e.g. "John Smith".
2. Create a new tag Descriptive tag named "John Smith".
3. Click on the People tag "John Smith" to show all photos tagged with it.
4. Select all those photos and drag them to the Descriptive tag "John Smith".
5. Go to step 1.
I'm guessing you could do a sustained rate of roughly 100 tags an hour, perhaps a little faster.  In my main catalog of 15K files, I currently have 150 People tags.

  • IPod is not recognised on either Windows nor on Mac. Please help!

I have an old iPod (3d generation I think) which worked ok up to the point when I got a new Macbook with a new iPod (60G, black). Since then the old iPod doesn't want to be recognized anywhere, on Windows or Mac. When I switch it on, all I see is the apple on the screen, nothing else works. I tried all the solutions that are on the support site, but none of them work. Could anyone please help me with this problem?

  • I just purchased Aperture and have 20,000  photos in my iPhoto Library. Can I import only certain events from iPhoto into Aperture or do I have to merge the whole iPhoto library?

I just purchased Aperture and have 20,000 + photos in my iPhoto Library. I see that I can create a unified library between the two. I am wondering if I can import only certain events from iPhoto (like only 2014 events) into Aperture or do I have to merge the whole iPhoto library? Are there any benefits to bringing the whole iPhoto library over to Aperture (iPhoto is SO SLOW for me, I wonder if it is because I have so many photos). Or, any detriment to only bring a few events over?
And, if I don't merge the two libraries, I assume that means I cannot do it at a later date?
Help. My local Apple store has had very few Aperture workshops, and the next one is like 2 months away.

Thank you so much for this information. Here are some responses/comments:
Disk space - it says 114.43 GB out of 499.25 GB free. I have no idea if that is enough.
    iPhoto version is 9.5.1
Again, I am not sure how to know if I have 3rd party software...but I don't think I do. Is 3rd party software anything non-apple?
I will try rebuilding the library. if that doesn't help, maybe I need more memory...? That is what Apple suggested, but that, of course, means buying something else. I've already bought APERTURE, on their recommendation...
It wasn't, and they told me it was slow because I had too many photos for iPhoto to handle and that I should buy Aperture. Which I did.
What is your iPhoto version? Are you using the most recent version 9.5.1?
iPhoto can handle 20000 photos, no problem.  Your computer can be slow for several reasons:
The most common problem for slowness - insufficient disk space. Don't let your free disk space drop below 20 GB of free space, better more. If the operating system does not have enough working space and the applications you are using, you will notice a very lagging behaviour.
Older or incompatible softweare can cripple your mac. Do you have any older third-party software installed, that might have installed incompatible kernel extensions?
Aperture might be slow or keep crashing, if you imported a corrupted image or incompatible video,  that cannot be processed. Then Aperture will try over and over again to create previews and never succeed.  You could test for this situation, by launching Aperture with the Shift-key held down. This will defer the generation of previews. If Aperture will launch and work better this way, you probably have some bad media in your photo library.
Another problem to check for is a corruption of your Aperture/iPhoto library. You have run the First Aid Tools to repair the iPhoto Library, but have you ever tried to rebuild the library? See this post by Old Toad: Rebuild iPhoto Version 11

  • I currently have 30,000 photos in my i photo library in300 events.  Ientally ad.    I add photos each day to different events over many years.  Currently I download my photos on one of my 6 MacBooks , and eventually I synch the photos to my phone

i have 30,000 photos in 300 events in I photo.
i Add photos each day into different events
i have to manually add the photos into one of my 5 MacBooks , synch to my phone and then synch each device to have all my photos be up to date with each event
is there now a way to add photos to my 30,000 photo library on just one device anfd have all my devices synched perfectly through the cloud into events exactly as it appears on my first device ...like our contacts or other synched items on the cloud?
it is critical that the events are maintained and the photos go exactly into place?
photo stream is not the answer
    thanks

    Hi Terence:
so that sounds like better news...I should be OK when this happens?
Essentially my events become albums...I still have the separation ..correct?
Why would this be a problem?
This was a response from an earlier post from Vanoord that concerned me: quote..see next-
Events has been removed from Photos - it's replaced by 'Moments'.
'Moments' are like 'Events', but split up by the software and you have no control over what goes where, or what they're called. If you've got 300 Events now, you can look forward to about 3,000 'Moments'.
This response implies that all my 300 events will become separated into thousands of moments.  What does this mean?  Is this true?
Won't my Events just become albums as you suggested?
I have years of events that have accumulated and collated photos.  They must stay separated.
****the other thing I was unclear about was the synching part..
    Example:
I have 300 albums with 30K photos distributed in various numbers in each album ( used to be events according to your response)
I add some photos in each album each day
I set all my devices to the cloud etc...
the cloud synchs from my designated "source" Macbook...
the cloud sees this and uploads
then the confusing part...the other devices ( MacBooks, I pad, i phone) all will see the synch and can then be designated to download to each device in the original form as we view it on a Macbook or i phone?  What does "full resolution" or optimized previews mean as Leonie replied above?
I need my JPEG images for my education keynote presentations and e mailing images as required from each event as needed ( soon to be albums)
Thanks again...just want to understand what is going to happen

  • I Have 10.000 photos in elements 10

    Hi
I still have 10.000 photos in elements 10 organize i still send my photos in there to work on them i have no idear what happend and i am realy pissed off at what Adobe
has done, does this mean i cant get my photos out and should i not send them in to organize and edit photos in elements 10?
some of use realy dont know much abouth this stuff and when you have no money we cant pay some one to help us with it so it realy sucks when they do this.
i dont know what to do now i dont know y my friend said buy this when they just shut it down and my be so much of my life pictures are gone i still see them and i work on them but can i get them out?
This will kill me if i can so many pictures and my Dad who is gone

If you use Elements and save photos on your computer, then they are still on your computer. You can continue to edit and save photos as you did.
What has changed is that photoshop.com used to be an option for cloud storage for users and your Elements 10 program had access to save photos there also.  Photoshop.com sharing and storage has been discontinued. Users who had photos stored there were given the option to have their photos migrated to another sharing and storage site before we closed down the sharing and storage part of photoshop.com.
Since you do not have an account in Revel using the email you login to the forum with, either you opted out of migration, logged in with a different email, or did not store files at all on Photoshop.com.
If you upgrade to Elements 11 at the adobe store, then you will have the option to store files from the Elements organizer into Revel for safekeeping.
Your elements program still edits and saves to your computer as it always did. It will continue to work even without Photoshop.com.

  • I have 21,000  photos stored in iphoto. I have a WD 1.5TB backup external hard drive.  What is the best way to erase about half of my photos on my internal hard drive?

I have 21,000  photos stored in iphoto. I have a WD 1.5TB backup external hard drive.  What is the best way to erase about half of my photos on my internal hard drive?

Here's one way to do what you want:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager

  • 35,000 Photos from 2000 to 2010 help organizing

We have 35,000 photos to organize we have uploaded all to mobile me iGallery and each batch of photos is sorted by date then title of event. But found that it is taking way to long for mobile me to load the photos on the web. Is there any way to organize these events into sub folders. Because mobile me will only allow a root folder then up to 500 photos within that folder. Any suggestions or help with a solution to this would be appreciated. We have each folder password protected and share the album with family and friends to view our "family album". But the large amount is causing it to be slow. Be nice to sort each event into a "year folder" 2000, 2001, 2002, etc. Then there are not near as many folders having to load. Cheers

But does this move all the individual photos in the smart album or my events "folder"?
It does neither. When a photo shows up in an album it's just a pointer pointing to the original photo in the Event. So you can have the same photo in many albums, slideshows, etc. and still only have one copy of it in the library. I know of no limit to the number of photos that a smart album or any album can have.
As far as your example you would have an Event for each of the folders imported. Your event names would be like "010 - 01-02 - Kids playing at the park", "2010 - 01-12 - Samantha's piano concert", etc. If you want to create albums of each event and put it in a folder titled 2009 you can but it might be more effort that it's worth as you can do searches for titles, event names, any text, date, etc. There are many ways to you can locate a particular photo.
You can use the search by date to find photos taken on a give day, a week, or month based on the EXIF Capture Date that the digital camera adds to each photo as it's taken.
iPhoto is a DAM (digital asset management) application that is based on a database. You can identify photos with keywords, new titles or descriptions and then search by those items like this keyword search:
You can search for any text entered into this search box, . It can be part of the file name, title, description, event title, album title, etc.
With iPhoto you don't manage folders anymore. Create a library, import a few folders and experiment with the various features. If you mess things up then delete the library, create a new one, import a few folders and try again.

    Hello Tantoh,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that your iPhone is not being recognized by iTunes when you connect it. To help resolve this situation, please read over and work through the steps outlined in the attached article.

I have an iPhone 4 and plugged it into itunes on my computer for the first time. Only to discover my sister has obviously plugged hers into my itunes account and now I have lost all my photos and numbers. Please help me!!

It can't do that by itself. You had to click through several prompts telling it to restore it from a backup of an old phone for that to happen.
If the phone was not backed up to iCloud before this happened, or to another computer, then the data is gone. There is no way to recover it.

my iphone does not sync with itunes on my second authorized computer, please help. i changed the first authorized computer in May 2012 and have been using the second authorized computer since then but it cannot sync - please help!!

"I was thinking I would just connect my iPhone and all of my music and other stuff would transfer to the new computer. "
Not true. The music and pic sync is one way - computer to iphone. The only exception is itunes purchases. Without syncing: File>Transfer Purchases
You really should transfer everything from the old computer, or your backup copy of your computer. Since you do not have access to the old computer, then use your backup copy of the old computer.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup copy of your computer ( not good), then you would have to transfer itunes purchased as described earlier. Any other itunes content would be lost.
You can e-mail photo library pics to yourself, but they will not be of the original quality.
Before syncing, enter at least one unique contact and calendar entry on the computer. When you first sync, then you should get the option to merge the data.

I probably dont want to go to Mountain Lion either because I've heard that it will slow down my computer, So, Lion 10.7 will be the perfect OS X for me.
I have ne newest release of Snow Leopard installed and works great.
Thank you ALL for your help.

you will be ok updating to the new software but there will be some trade off. i have 3 macbooks 2006 that are all running the latest versions.
some of the trade off are
    1-2 less of battery life
    slow wake ups from sleep
slower start up time about 30-40 seconds longer then what you have now
the operating system will use high % of your processer while idealing
these are not the things you want to hear about a new os compared to the old one but this is how it is even with a new macbook pro. but it's not the end of the world. just make sure you have at least more then 2GB of ram and have a good harddrive and you will be ok.
