People that "steal" internet questions

my brother has wireless network setup at his house, he lives in a crowded neighborhood, duplex at that..
Is there a way to tell if people are "jackin" his internet access?
I mean the other day i was sitting in my car about a block away waitin for him to show up, and to kill time i turned on my macbook pro 17" and pi YOW!! i was able to get interent access?
1. can he tell if people are taking his internet access?
2. how can he track them down to verify who they are?
3. if people are indeed "stealin" internet access from him, can they hide themselves?
4. what should he do...
thanks all
good lookin out
oNe

1. can he tell if people are taking his internet
access?
Yes he can. If he has an AEBS "AirPort Management Utility"
will tell him who is using his AEBS.
2. how can he track them down to verify who they
are?
"AirPort Management Utility" will give him the MAC
(physical) addresses of all computer "connected" to
his network.
3. if people are indeed "stealin" internet access
from him, can they hide themselves?
To tell you the truth, yes actually they can.
If you don't do anything to protect a wireless access,
then anybody can access it and it's pretty easy to
hide a stolen access.
If you configure your AEBS to do WPA2 controlled access,
then the access to your network is pretty hard to steal.
4. what should he do...
Use WPA2.

  • How can I report people that are harassing me on my question?

I posted a question on how to fix a problem that I had with my iPhone. When a person posted me talked about dealing with an employer to solve the problem. No it don't matter how I read it I asked why did they assume that without asking me if I even had a job that the phone was used for. After that the harassment started as if they were defending their friend and I was cruel to them. I did get an answer to my problem but the harassment keep going on and on and on even one wrote that because of that one question I shouldn't be able to post anymore questions when I would need it.
How can I report this to someone? Who else have these people harassed? Would these people be addressed that they shouldn't be behaving like this?

Sorry, but the poster before Bee, and Bee herself did not write anything that could be construed as harassment. If those posts deeply hurt you (as well as the original post that set you off) then I would strongly suggest that the Internet is NOT a place you should spend any time as your feelings are going to constantly get hurt. In fact, I'd suggest avoiding all contact with other people as much as possible if KiltedTim hurt you with his post.
As has been repeatedly explained, he merely asked because that is another avenue that could cause the Camera app to be removed, and he went on to explain how this happens. There is nothing personal in it, we don't care how you got your phone, where you work, what type of job you have, etc. He did care enough to join in and give another possibility as to why your camera icon was missing. If you do a search of these threads you will find that more than a few people have decided to put their work account on their personal iPhone and the profile installed on their iPhone by personnel at their workplace changes features on the iPhone.
Again, if this, and the answers here, deeply hurt you, pull the cable from the Internet immediately.

    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
        1.    Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
        2.    After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
        3.    Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
        4.    Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Kappy, a pretty wonderful and very knowledgeable man, has tip for that which I have copied and pasted above

  • Games that require Internet access questions

    Hello,
Okay I have a couple of questions for being able to play games that require Internet access. How do I get Internet access for my Ipod Touch? I don't know. Do I have to take it in somewhere or like can I do it from my home? And how much does it cost? It's a monthly payment fee right? Thank you very much!
    From,
    Kristy.

Wifi is on and connection is properly established with correct log in information?  Mobile data is set to ON?  No restrictions on background data enabled?  Strong wifi or mobile data signal?

  • Macbook Internet Question

Hey guys, new Mac person here so if I ask an obvious question that's why. I recently ordered a new Macbook for school purposes and was wondering something about the internet connection.
My family uses a linksys wireless router for our computers. I was wondering if my Macbook would be able to connect to this router and use the internet off of it.
And if not, if the Airport Express would be able to connect and work with our main computer which is a Windows machine.
    Please help me! Thanks!
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

"Yeah, I trying to make a point to some people that they think Macs use some form of Alien technology..."
    Clearly they are - LOL!
It is the fault of ignorant people who think that Macs are not PCs. The industry as a whole as moved towards more standardization for the sake of manufacturing simplicity. Fewer proprietary parts means more people can use the same components.
You would never believe what I hear everyday at work about how USB and Firewire do not work with Macs and that there is no MS Office-like program for the Mac. One guy even tried to tell me that you needed "Apple-compatible" speakers for Macs - whatever that means.

  • 3g drops every time i access an app that uses internet

I have a verizon iphone 4, every time i access e-mail, safari browser, twitter, pretty much any app that uses internet 3g seems to just cut out. It comes back pretty much as soon as i quit whatever app i try to use but i cant get anything requireing internet to work unless i connect to wifi, any help would be much appreciated.

sorry, I misunderstood your question somehow. I thought you were asking about the confirmation screen (not requiring a password) that you get when you first run an application that you got off internet.
You can't get rid of the password prompts when you install things that require system changes. and that's a very good thing IMO. But you should be able to install most apps without a password if you are using an admin account. only apps that use installers and change some system files require passwords. apps installed by a drag and drop into /Applications don't.

I downloaded the app "born to be rich" on my 5s. If I play it even if I'm not playing against other people on the internet, will I use my data by playing it?

I'm unfamiliar with that particular game. However, you can test it for yourself. Put the phone in Airplane mode. Does the game still work? If so, it's not using data. Also, contact the developer.
    Best of luck.

  • To sleep, or turn-off, or leave on, that is the question

A couple years ago I called a local Mac dealer and asked the worth of my G4 iMac for a trade-in. He asked whether I usually turned the G4 off, or put it to sleep, or left it on all the time. I said, I usually left it on (with display turned off), or put it to sleep at night. He said the value was less in that case because the heat stresses in high-powered ICs were more detrimental to the life of the machine than on-off stresses. He said I should always turn the machine off at night.
I'm a retired computer engineer, and the philosophy we had at the time I was working was that the thermal stresses on ICs and solder joints induced by repeated on-off cycles was more harmful than the steady-state stresses of leaving a computer on 24/7.
    So, that's my question. What is best for my new iMac for maximum reliability. (Forget about energy consumption for the moment.}
    1. What's best for overall reliability - turn the unit off at night, put it to sleep at night, or leave it on (with the display in sleep) - or some variation of these.
    2. Is there some magic in the OS that is optimized by one mode over another?
I'm expect there are no comprehensive studies on this subject, but perhaps there are some informed opinions.
    -Bob

For a desktop Mac, I leave it ON all the time using only Display Sleep. I also have the setting for +sleeping hard drives when possible+ enabled, but that does not apply to the internal drive (when used as the startup disk); it keeps spinning. External drives do spin down when not accessed.
I believe leaving it on all the time causes less long-term stress on the hardware, for a Mac that is used every day for at least half the day.
I think the second best approach, and better approach for energy conservation, is to use Computer Sleep. However, it should be used so that when you start using the Mac at the start of the day, your Mac stays ON (with Display Sleep only) for the rest of the day. At the end of the day (when you will not be using it again until the next day), use Computer Sleep.
Periodically, for leaving it on all the time or using sleep, restart the Mac; you can make it weekly if you want a routine, but my iMac is fine for about three weeks. After that, I often notice some oddities with general performance, so I do a restart. I don't think about too much, because there is usually some other reason to do a restart within a three week period.
I think the worst approach, which a lot of people use, is have Energy Saver set to do Computer Sleep after a relatively short inactive period. Then, the Mac is repeatedly powering on and off (sleeping/waking) throughout the day, and that probably puts more stress on the hardware.
For a laptop Mac, they are designed to run off battery power and use sleep to save power (and their hard drives are better suited for that mode). The issues and considerations are not the same.

  • Looking to buy an iphone (internet Question)

    Hi all
my phone is on its last legs and ive been looking to buy an iPhone
Im with o2 on my current phone and would like to keep it that way
My question is... What happens with the internet on an iphone? do you connect randomly to wireless signals? or do you have to pay say o2 to be able to use the internet for a certain time period?
    any information much appreciated

With an O2 iPhone contract (which you need to buy an iPhone from O2 unless you go PAYG), you get access to 'The Cloud' and "BTOpenzone" wireless hotspots where ever you are, as part of the monthly contract fee.
You're also free to use any free WiFi hotspots that are available where you are, such as in coffee shops, McDonalds etc.
Where there is no WiFi you connect to the internet via 3G or EDGE over the mobile phone network - also included in the monthly contract fee.
All the details are on the O2 web-site: http://shop.o2.co.uk/update/iphone.html

Since you don’t allow emails any more – I suspect because of the numerous complaints with your service and the way you treat people that you don’t want documented, I am calling and I want this call recorded for future reference.
I have been a long time faithful customer of vzw and although the past year I have been late on payments many times and really couldn’t afford your exorbitant prices for services lots of other companies offer sometimes three times cheaper than what you charge, I have hung in there trying my best to meet my obligations.
This month has been no exception. You don’t know the background; the whole story of people’s lives. I know you could care less because all you care about is the profit-the money that comes in.
I was told when I agreed to pay my bill on the third per the recorded message that I had 14 days to pay…you cut me off anyway. The phones are not the tissue; your suspending my service means I cannot work. I may lose my job…how do you justify that? In any case? The least you could do would be to keep 4986 on and cut the phones off. But no. You refuse to compromise and meet the basic needs of your customer. What does that say about your company? I tried to call back on three separate occasions to tell you I couldn’t pay because of unexpected expenses but couldn’t get out of the automated system…sadly couldn’t get to a real person which also speaks volumes to me.
All this tells me this is a company I don’t wish to be affiliated with any more. As soon as I can, I will discontinue service with you…I know you could care less. I will honor the remaining portion of the contract but that’s it. You don’t deserve my business. I am a good, hardworking person who, at the sacrifice of myself and my needs, always pays her bills…albeit late at times. I realize others tell you stories and lies to justify themselves. That’s not me. If you knew what I had been through the last 7 yrs you would marvel that I am  still on my feet…don’t judge too quickly. You could be wrong…and in my eyes you are by doing this to me.
God will see us through this extremely scary time of that I have no doubt. No thanks to your company and lack of understanding and mercy. I am doing the best I can. Sadly you are not.
See I have choices. MANY choices of providers for services you offer. I don’t have to be treated like this. I don’t have to succumb to your coldness and callousness. I intend to choose better (and cheaper). If your company doesn’t get the “people factor” back you will be sorry.

Problem here is you admit you cannot afford the service.
And you want to blame Verizon for losing a job because you have no cell phone.
If your job depends on that phone I would pay it on time every time if you need a job to pay your bill.
No other service is going to treat you any different. And if you cannot afford Verizon's monthly invoice how are you going to afford new devices, activation fees, possible security deposits on any other cellular carrier? You can't.
Also if you made an arraignment to pay and then decide you cannot do so, why should Verizon extend you service or credit, or why is it you want to use the service and data and not pay for it as agreed.
Get a prepay phone. Its evident the cost is too high for you to afford on post pay.
    Good Luck

  • My observations ( for people that have indexing and connection issues )

Since cisco takes an awful lot of time doing anything about these problems i decided to investigate the box myself today.
I followed advice from various threads and did some digging aroudn with network traffic snoopers and some other tools.
First ( and this is buried somewhere deep in the documentation ) you can NOT have ANY file or folder name that is longer than 32 characters. This is a limitation of the stupid linux they are running on ! If you have a file with longer name or foldername it may screw up the indexing.
Second : file and path names can only have alphanumerical characters and numbers and spaces in them. DO NOT USE ANY other character. it messes up the indexing  I had folders named -= folder 1 =-. they never got indexed. as soon as i removed teh  -= and =- the indexing kicked in .... This is again a twonkyvision / loonix problem
The box has tremendous problems with ghost devices on the network. I have on my network at home : 4 pc's running XP ( some pro some home edition )  2 laptops with Vista. One box with Win7. One Windows home Server. One linksys Skype phone , One Roku soundbridge, one Dlink DNS323 , one ADS network drive , one Simpletech Simplestor , A HP color laserjet , a Hp 6250 , 7650 and some other HP network printer. Thru the wireless link my PDA ( iPaq) and iPhone connect once in a while too. My blu ray player is also hooked up (netflix streaming). And then there are various experimental systems ( i am an electronics engineer and i have built some gadgets that are network connected that allow me to remotely turn on lights monitor temperature etc. )
Now , the NMH does not detect correctly most of the devices. It keeps on trying to feed information to the printers ... it also tries feeding information to other NAS devices as well as to the Windows Homeserver ... It falsely identifies one of the printers as a dlink ethernet connected dvd player ...
It also has problems with devices that use static ip addresses on the network ( i set up the printers and other NAS devices with hardcoded ip addresses. so no dhcp )
So here is what i did : go to twonky configuration ( port 9000 see tony's article )
Step 1 : Yank out the ethernet cable to ANY OTHER DEVICE except the pc you are working on , your router and the NMH <- this is important
step 2 : Hit the button to erase all the devices it discovered.  (reset list)
Step 3 : hit the SAVE button
step 4: UNCHECK the box next to the 'reset list' button
step 5: hit the SAVE button
Now , on the left hand side click on Maintenance
Click on ALL checkboxes under Log level. they should ALL be checked
    Hit the Clear Logs button
    Hit Save changes
Hit RESTART server. you wil get a file not foound error page. you will see in your browsers titlebar that the url changes to an ip address with some text behind it. remove all that text and key in :9000 and hit return. it will take you back to tonky. ( i don't know how important this step is , but i did not go in throught the device name , i used the ip address from this point on. normally it should not matter but you never know ( i have a suspicion i will explain later )
Write down this IP address. it is usefull to know.
Now since we are back in wonkyvision ( stupid half baked program ) Go back to the maintenance screen.
now hit the rebuild databse button.
You should hear disk activity now.
Hit the Show log  button once. the log files should open.
you can refresh this screen by hitting the reload button in your browser.
you should see messages fly by like
    21:14:40:317 LOG_SYSTEM:fsmon_add_watch inotify_add_watch (12, /share/media/photos/Moorea May 1998) returns 2045
    21:14:40:317 LOG_DB:watch wd=2045 added on /share/media/photos/Moorea May 1998
    21:14:40:379 LOG_DB:upnp_folder_watch_add_dir /share/media/photos/Moorea May 1998/New Folder
thnis means it is probin the entire directory structure and adding files and paths.
Let it run for a while. hitting refresh on your browser once in a while. it took a couple of hours on mine ( 76000+ pictures ... ) and a couple of hundred songs + some videos.
once disc activity ceases : go back to twonky port 9000 , go in to maintenance and hit Clear Logs button.
    HitSave button
Hit restart server. you will again get an error page. get rid of the rubbish behind the ip address.and key in :9000
go to the clients and security page.
Make sure Automatic discovery is still turned OFF ( if it is on you will see in the logbooks that it attempts several times a second to connecto to anything it can find. Since the detection process is flawed it bombs out. this may overload the poor cpu in the NMH... )
Hit the reset list once more
    hit save
Now turn automatic discovery on and hit Save.
go back to maintenacne and hit restart server. again on the error page : erase the garbage after the ip address and go back to port 9000.
if you now go back to client/sharing page you should see 2 possibly 3 device. one is your router , one is the pc you are working on, and the last one is the same ip address as you see in the browser. ( the ipaddress you are using to talk to the nmh )
make sure all the checkboxes before these devices are checked. and hit the save button once more.
at this point i unchecekd the automatic discovery and hit save once more. i go back to maintenance and hit restart server for the last time.
At this point the nmh restarted twonky and immediately there was a ton of disc activity. i opened the normal nmh user interface and lo and behold : the green spinning arrow started to move and progress was going forward. it increased 1% roughly ever 10 seconds or so. when it finally hit 100% everything was there. as it should be.
    Now. speculation on my part
    - this thing has trouble with long file names and non alphanumerical characters.
    - this thing has trouble with device it incorrectly identiefies or cannot identify. this screws up wonkymedia.
    - the communication between the process on the NMH (that serves the flash user interface running on your browser ) and winkymedia is going through a network port itself. There are problems. thye do not do inter process communication but go via network messages... ( this is kind of dumb as it loads the network... )
    proof :
    21:01:03:625 filescanner thread started
    21:01:03:628 LOG_SSDPSDP_notify_packet ### SSDP sending:
    NOTIFY * HTTP/1.1
    HOST: 239.255.255.250:1900
    CACHE-CONTROL: max-age=99999
    LOCATION: http://192.168.1.66:9000/DeviceDescription.xml
    NT: urn:schemas-upnp-org:service:ContentDirectory:1
    NTS: ssdp:alive
    SERVER: Linux/2.x.x, UPnP/1.0, pvConnect UPnP SDK/1.0
the filescanner sends messages through network port 1900 to the NMH. Since the filescanner is running on the NMH ... i also have no clue what 239:255:255:250 at 190 is ...
i also see sometimes the following messages fly by
    21:01:03:894 [Error] - LOG_HTTP:HTTP_get_header Cannot receive header, clientSocket=13, nBytesReceived=0
21:01:03:894 LOG_HTTP:HTTP_send_receive received no header in HTTP_send_receive, propably client closed socket, URL=http://192.168.1.66:9000/
my suspicion is that , since the various processes running on the NMH ( the indexer , the UI server and all the twonky processes) all intercommunicate through the network port , this is a problem. if the network settings get corrupted ( because false identification , notwork overload or whatever ) the thing jams up.
by cleaning out all the false identieis , letting it identify itself ( important for its own process communication ) and a pc , and then turning off the detection .this solves that problem.
limiting the filesstem to 'clean 32 char max' names solves another problem.
I also see a lot of keep-alive message fly by on the netowrk ( several a second. )
i eventually plugged in my other computers and the roku , let it autodetect for a while and turned this feature back off. Then i plugged in all other devices the NMH has no business with.
So far it still works fine.
I still do see a ton of messages fly by where the NMH is probing the network on existing devices. tey come back with 'device already validated
21:01:04:140 LOG_CLIENT_DB:The entry found in known clients list is already validated (ip=192.168.1.76)

( .76 is the pc i am working on right now. )
i don't know why they keep probing. i am not streaming anything and auto detect is turned off ..
anyway i will keep you guys posted on how this evolves.
One thing is for sure. this is another half baked ' broken source' based system.

thisnthing keeps on probing itself ... i wonder why. (.66 is the NMH  .76 is my pc ... ) it is also strange it cannot retrieve its own mac address....
Oh , you can turn off the logging features again when done. it only takes time and diskspace on the NMH
And before i get flamed : the comments i make about 'broken source' : i have no gripe with linux. I have a problem with companies that grab a bunch of stuff that is free ,slap it together, sell it for a lot of money and give no support to the people that bought it.
