Perceived loudness - Match Volume

Hey,
I'm trying to match the volume of a large amount of small mono wav files.
I would like to use the perceived loudness setting but the Match Volume function dosen't seem to work properly with it. E.g. when there are files in my pool that vary from -25 dB to -11 dB and I use the match volume setting to match the perceived loudness to -17 dB the output volumes vary from -21 to -12 but don't seem to have the exact volume of -17 dB (which is the case when matching the RMS).
And a question what does perceived loudness really mean? I know that it is more sensitive to the mid-range, but is there any graph that shows how it exactly works?

Relly You can match the volume of 6000 files by ear better than an automated process? I'd like to see that:)
Yes I can match files better by ear. No, I wouldn't do 6000 of them like that, obviously.
In my opinion a 'Match volume' level should first measure what energy a signal has e.g. RMS than calculate how many dB should it add or remove to match the desired level. Simple as that. The more complicated the measurement is the more complex is the whole match function.
So when I use percieved loudness to match the volume of 6000 files, Audition should first estimate the loudness of all the files and that apply gain to them to match my desired percieved loudness level. That's how it works with e.g. ITU norm.
Well that is pretty much what I said - except that it's not a simple measurement at all, otherwise it would have been commonplace a long time ago. For a start, as well as dynamics changes, perceived loudness is very much frequency-dependent, so weighting algorithms have to be used. But like you said, 'estimate' is about it.
Oh, and some of the regularly broadcast antics of one of the largest broadcasters in the world (the BBC) prove conclusively that the EBU/ITU way of doing this simply doesn't work, FWIW. One of the single biggest culprits is speech vs. music or general output on TV. If it did work, I wouldn't have to turn up the sound on nearly every speech programme they broadcast, but I do - and I'm not alone. Like I said, I can guess it better than any automated system.

In working with a large multi project, it can be time consuming to try to keep all the dialog the same volume. Hi, I followed the instructions shown to match the perceived loudness of my files and saved them with the alterations.
When I reopened the files to double check, the perceived loudness was no longer at the level I had saved. I have experienced this multiple times on several different computers even after a fresh install of CS6.
Can you please advise how I can ensure the files maintain the volume I set for them? I am processing up to 500 audio files at a time so it is quite annoying when all that time spent processing comes to nothing.

  • 'Match Volume' of songs for radio show

    Hi,
In the next little while my radio show will be going from 1 local station to 6 others accross Canada, which requires me to track and produce the show entirely in Audition and FTP it rather than just in RCS at the station.
There's really only one thing that I'm stuck on and I'd love some help...
Obviously not every digital music file is the same volume, so I need to match the volume for all of them. Within the 'match volume' panel there are several options (ITU-R BS.1770-2 Loudness, Total RMS, File, Peak Amplitude, etc.).
Which one should I go with? Should I use limiting? What should I set the loudness to?
I didn't go to school for any of this, just another YouTube education.
Oh, the music style is rock if that means anything.
    Thanks for the help!

Your ears are really the best instrument for judging the relative loudness of music tracks. However the ITU-R BS 1770 is the one that a lot of broadcasters specify I believe. Most broadcasters also provide programme delivery specs as to how they want the audio treated.
As to compression and limiting. This will depend on what the stations themselves apply to the audio on it's way to the transmitter. Many use Optimod or similar systems to make their content sound as loud and punchy as they like to compete with other stations. So any dynamic compression or limiting that you apply will be totally wiped out by their transmission processing. So don't do too much, just enough to match your music tracks to one another. Then let the broadcaster spoil the whole thing with their processing.

Although you say you have let the battery drain, was it for long enough? Since nothing else that you've tried so far has worked, I suggest that you leave the iPod unplugged for at least four days, preferably a week. That way, if something is stopping the iPod from turning the screen on, then whatever it is will drain the battrey. However, since the screen isn't on, that may take longer than if the screen was on.
Then, after that time, plug the iPod into a power source and leave it alone for at least thirty minutes. Only after thirty minutes will it show any signs of life, but you should leave it until it is fully charged before trying to use it.
If you get to this stage, the fact that the battery has drained will cause the iPod to reset when it springs back to life.
Let us know how you get on.

Hi !i recently upgraded to 4.07 and found that loud speaker volume during a talk is too low.
Is there any option to increase it (other than pressing side + button). even at full volume it is too low than previous firm ware

go to options>audio settings>Loudness and turn it on. and if u think its not enough then u can go to options>equaliser>options>new preset>"name it" then turn all equalisers up then press back and activate that newly made equaliser.

  • AutoTrim & Include Subfolders From A Folder & Preserve Subfolder Structure & Auto Shut Down Computer - ALL In Batch Processing Mode And Match Volume Mode ?

    Hi! I salute you all!
First of all I want to excuse my english (it's not my native language)!
In 2014 we are dealing with thousands of files (video, audio, etc.), because of the present powerful technology, still... we are missing very important and useful parts for doing our jobs properly and very quickly!
In this case is Adobe Audition too, in my oppinion!
Adobe Audition is a great program, which help us to edit in many ways our audio files, but... unfortunatelly has major missing parts, which would be nice to be implemented as soon as possible!
Some of them are are right below this line:
    1. AutoTrim (for removing silences from audio files, before and after)
    2. Include Subfolders From A Folder (when adding a folder for working with, we should have the possibillity to add its subfolders too)
    3. Preserve Subfolder Structure (when exporting a folder with its all subfolders, we should have the possibillity to export the exact structure like the original)
    4. Auto Shut Down Computer (when all the tasks/jobs are done, we should be able to auto close the program and auto shut down our desktop/laptop as well)
When you will add these features which are so wanted, to have them all in Batch Processing mode and Match Volume mode as well, please?!
Many other audio softwares have all of these "old" possibillities, like "GoldWave" for instance (I am not advertising it at all), but the Adobe Audition which is more complex...doesn't so far!
I thank you all and I really wait for these very next future feature requests!
    Have a nice day!
P.S.: Is this message/question read by Adobe stuff members (persons who can take decissions in this way) too, or only by us, the comunity members?!

  • Downloaded ringtone, from iTunes store, is so loud! Volume is all the way down, but the ringtone is crazy loud. Help?!

I downloaded a ringtone from the iTunes store and set it as my text tone. Cool, right? Well, IT'S SO LOUD. My volume is all the way down and people clear across the building can hear it! What can I do?

You should have gotten a user manual.  If the manual is of no help, contact the manufacturer.

  • 2G Touch: Music is far too loud. Volume controls don't work.

My Touch is very new and it looks like there is stuff I don't understand yet.
When I play my music, any track, it's way too loud and is injurious to hearing.
I have slid the volume slider all the way to the left. No result. The slider does nothing.
I have used the volume buttons on the left of the Touch. No effect. Way too loud.
I have used the Volume Limiter in Settings>Music. It's all the way to the left. No effect.
Clearly the Touch must not be used to listen to music until I get my volume control working.
"Reset all settings" has no effect on the volume problem.
    Any Suggestions?

    OMG! Found it. Very unintuitive.
The Touch volume controls do not work if the 'Pod is sat in the Apple Universal Cradle. I was using the cradle without the USB cable.
That makes little sense to me.

  • *Ridiculously* loud headset volume!

Yeah... This is starting to bug the crap out of me, so any responses are appreciated.
I have a 2011 15" macbook pro. I've been listening to a lot of music on my laptop lately; the speaker volume is fine, but it's when I plug my headphones in (I'm using apple headphones that came with my 4G ipod touch)... The sound is unbelievably loud.
One tiny point above "mute" is loud enough! When I put it halfway to max, I can hear the headphones in the other room, and it's like being front-row in a rock concert. I don't even want to know what it'll sound like on max - I'm guessing it would blow the headphones up.
Any solutions? The noise even one point above mute is loud, so when I do video editing I always have to adjust the volume of the actual audio file. When I'm done the video, I always forget to up the volume so I end up importing a really hard-to-hear project.
Can anyone suggest a fix for this? The sound is really loud and I'm already getting ringing in my ears from it.

You can try shift+option+volume key combination. This will increment the sound level by sub one point intervals.
Try different headphones (even Apple's stock ear plugs). Some headphones have a higher "gain" which means that they player softer at any given mac volume.
If you are getting ringing in the ears, this is a sign of (usually temporary) hearing damage. Please take care of your hearing.
As for the "hiss" this is due to complex internal circuits causing interference. This has been an issue on all Macbook Pro's I have owned. The only solution is to buy a break out box, which separates the output from the enclosure. And example can be found here.

    Hi!
I've beem some problems with alsa. Every time when I start my laptop, the sound is 100%... too loud.
After use "alsamixer" to normalize... and "alsactl store" to save the changes... after reboot, sound is 100% again... changes take no effect and sound is too loud again.
    $ alsactl store

    Thanks in advance!!

I would investigate if the alsa-restore.service alsa-state.service and alsa-store.service , that are part of the alsa-utils package work properly. these are responsible for saving/restoring the values in var/lib/alsa/asound.state.

  • Speech Alignment and Loudness Matching?

    Thanks,  PrAEPs

I suggest also using the "Comments" section for the page that the video is on as well.  This may get more eyes here, but it _should_ get the eyes of the video's producer there.
Anyways, the technology, does use spectral information in getting the alignment.  This is how it can achieve better results sometimes when compared to older existing technologies for automatic alignment.  For example, a waveform envelope may not be able to tell sibilance from a vowel sound when comparing an overdub vs the original field audio.  However, this is easy when looking at the spectral information and it can achieve a tighter alignment for that.
That is, of course, assuming that the same words are being spoken in a similar way between the two clips.
As for two different languges, I think it is a "Your Mileage May Vary" situation.  I think the intent of the suggestion is probably hoping that this feature can save you time if you wanted to get better lip-sync.  However, one can easily imagine that if the dubbed audio is stretched or squeezed too far that it (A) won't sound natrual, but more importantly (B) disrupts the performance of the voice actor.  On the other hand, if it is just doing micro adjustments it can make the timing better match that of the original mouth movements because it is making it match the timing of the original audio.
I would suggest people with actual real-world content to try it out and preferebly post a video of your results (either positive or negative).  That would be a good way to further the discussion.

  • ITunes match tracks different volumes from the same album

Using iTunes Match.  Among other reported problems, after downloading Matched tracks to my master iTunes library to replace lower bitrate versions, the new tracks from the same album have different loudness or volumes between the tracks.  Is this because iTunes Match is matching the songs to different versions of the same album?  Where some albums have been 'remastered' or such, that the recorded volume between the albums is different?  But instead of matching tracks to the same version of the album, some are being matched to different versions of the same album?
Quite offputting to listen to a single album where track to track loudness changes suddenly.
PS, I'm not using SoundCheck on my Mac.

Same problem here. I'm an "album" kind of music fan and when I'm listening matched albums that the sound quality and voulme changes I get really put off. Case in point B-52's self-titled album: tracks 1,2, 5 & 7, nice and loud; 3, 4, 6, 8 & 9 tiny sounding in comparison...Hello?  So far iTunes Match is not worth my money. I'd like to hear form an Apple iTunes Match repersentative to know if this issue will be resolved. As it is, is not very useful. Please fix the problem. Also many of my albums show that a track or a few will not be matched but uploaded to the cloud which means more of my albums will be spotty sounding as tracks will have different bit rate, etc. There is no real excuse for not matching whole albums as oppose to single songs. I read somwhere the 'typical" case of the Beatles "Abbay Road" album not matching "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window" on most users. I think is silly to say the less. Albums matching not single songs, please!!!

  • How do you make the volume louder when you export music from garageband?

Hey everytime I export my music from garageband the volume seems to die down.. Is there a way to fix this? Thank you

There's two things that are being called "volume": one is the output level of your audio file. Go to GB's preferences and see if the auto-normalize function is checked - if yes, it will automatically adjust the master volume so the maximum level of your output file is 0 dB. If you uncheck it, you can crank up your volume more, but your audio might clip in some places.
The other thing is loudness – audio files with the same peak level have a very different perceivable loudness. That is a question of mastering, i.e. applying compressors and limiters to make the sound more "dense". But that's a whole different story.

  • Volume Matching Across Multiple Songs

Anyone have any tips for how to match volume for multiple songs? I am using LE 8, have differnt styles of songs, and the overall volumes are all over the place when I am done with them
    Thanks
    RH

If you upgrade to Logic Pro, you'll get WaveBurner as part of the package which helps you do this, including tweaking your pauses between tracks, fades etc.
If you have Toast, you can do it there too.
If you don't have any 3rd. party software, the work around would be to assemble all your songs in order, end to end in a new Logic file, and listen to all your tracks and adjust the relative levels between songs, then bounce out the individual tracks which have volume changes with their new volume settings. Finally you could then use any burning app such as [SimplyBurns|http://bit.ly/c1oglP] to create CDs or bounce them out in Logic with the additional .mp3 option.
Obviously it's important to listen to your material in order, in context, as some songs will be at the wrong subjective level depending on the tracks either side in the placement. This isn't really important in digital distribution where your material probably won't be listened to as a whole, but as individual downloads.
