Percussive Soundfonts

Anyone know where there are any good xylophone or marimba soundfonts? I found 1 or 2, but I'm having trouble unzipping the sfark files.

  • Soundbanks percussion kit and EAX microphone problems

I bought the PCMCIA Audigy ZS notebook to use it with my notebook HP Pavillon ZS6000 (Athlon 3200, 1 Gb RAM) having the hobby to sing with friends using karaoke software like Van Basco or Karawin.
I bought it in a blister pack at the end of August.
In both sw (Karawin or Vanbasco) you can set the output device to one between internal midi map, Microsoft GS wavetable, Creative soundfont player, or a virtual software like YamahaXG or Virtual Sound Canvas if you have.
I use the Creative soundfont player and change the banks through soundbank manager. It works properly, but if I try to change the percussion kit, dont' hear any difference, like if it use only the first one. Moreover, if I try to combinate 2 soundbanks loading over a second one only with a great piano for example it sounds only the first bank in the list.
Another problem is with Eax anvironment, that produce on the microphone sounds only a continuous bipped sound (I dont' know if it's the one you called bopping) and no echo or reverb...
Least if I use the internal speaker the latency increase terribly to more than 1 second.
    Someone can help me?

    $? Hi.
I have got same problem here.
When I switch from "creation to game mode" or from "game to creation mode" I can hear microphone/line in playback.
It is muted on the panel but I can HEAR it.
I always have to switch it ON and OFF (in both modes).
Same thing happens when I play through ASIO.
Microphone playback activates but panel visualisation is OK.
    This behaviour is pretty annoying.
How is THIS even possible ? I can not believe it.
One more thing about create console I do not like.
    It is SLOW !
    Slow loading (opening), slow switching.
And two words to Creative developers:? "SIMPLICITY" and "EFFECTIVENESS".

  • Need serious help with Vienna Soundfont studio

    Hi there,
I am fairly new to the program, and would like to ask if anyone knows his/her way around my problem.
My intention is, playing a (percussi've) midi note via a program called 'guitar pro'.
This is no problem when I open an existing SF2 file in Vienna, but when I try to create my own virtual drumkit (-from hell by East West/Quantum Leap), things get screwy:
I managed to let Vienna load the current soundbank, but I wish to replace the samples in that soundbank with the ones from drumkit from hell.
The thing is that at one time, I could hear that tight triggered bass drum sound which I had imported in the current soundbank, on note 35, but I tried and tried, and I'm really stuck here...
    could anyone please help me?

Well I hate the StringTokenizer I don't know why... but..
your while loop will loop through all three lines reassigning those two ints so you will only get the day/time of the last line.
I would return true if the day is available.
The way you are doing your return seems wrong you should only return false when you have an already booked date. In other words keep it all in the loop except put a return true after the loop because that means the date is not booked.

  • X-Fi XtremeMusic MIDI recording issues and other SoundFont issues

I am attempting to record output from the MIDI synthesis through "What U Hear", but seem to be getting periodic pops. This is while recording at 24/48 - the problem is much worse at 24/96; I get a constant scratchy noise or silence until I stop recording. Note that I am in "Audio creation mode" at this stage.
Additionally, I have found that while having 3rd party SoundFonts loaded and playing a MIDI file, I experience the following issues - missing notes and percussion and notes playing with with the wrong pitch.
Is anybody else experiencing these issues? I am using the latest 1187 drivers.
    Cheers

You can also try if connecting turntable through amplifier (w/ RIAA) to X-Fi Line-In makes any difference --> shows out, if the RIAA pre in X-Fi is not working properly.

  • Soundfonts ques

Hello people,i am new to the forum and i could use some of your help on this matter.So... I have a home recording studio software on my pc which i use to record instrunments on channels , add midi drums and then mix the whole thing down to mp3 file. To get the midi drums i use the "Guitar Pro" (i hope there is no problem mentioning that name :/ if there is just replace the name with ******** ^_^).
I tab down the stuff i want and then extract it as a .wav file.. The result i get is preety ok but it still sounds "midi" :/
What i want to do and thats why i need your help,is do something so instead of the "midi" sounds on the percussion , i get more "convincing" and "real" sounds... I thought that could be done by adding soundfonts...So i would be really thankful if you could give me some info on where i can find the soundfonts i seek, which ones i should use and some instructions on how to replace the old ones , or make them exist together :P (i dont want to lose my previous soundfonts just in case i dont "like" the new ones)
P.S. I have an SB Audigy 9400 at the moment and as i can see on the Audio HQ ---> SoundFont i currently use the [2GMGSMT Rev N++] bank
Thnx in advance and i really look forward to your reply

or just google "soundfont ". Top rate GM soundfonts are for example Titanic Soundfont, and the "middle rate" GM I use is Hugge GM64. If you can't find them through the normal way go to the P2P.
To add them, open soundfont bank manager and click on load to cumulate soundfonts, or replace to change one by another. You won't loose your soundfont if you replace it by another; it only a file on your HD. See you user manual for more indepth explanations.

  • I cant get my New SoundFont Studio to work at all

I cant get my New SoundFont Studio to work at allrI have recently downloaded and installed Vienna SounfFont Studio 2.40.60 on my desktop computer with Windows XP. My card is an X-Fi Fatality.
According to The Art of SoundFont, in the tree window I am supposed to see SoundFont Bank (or the name of the one I loaded) followed by folders named Sample Section, User Sample Pool, ROM Sample Pool, Instrument Pool, Preset Section, Melodic Pool, and Percussi've Pool.
?When I open up the copy of the program that I downloaded, I get only SoundFont Bank all by itself, with no folders at all following it.
When I load a SF2 file that I made with the version 2. that came with the old AWE64, I get the name of my file followed by folders for Bank 0, bank , and Bank 28, that can be expanded into the instruments that I put into them. But I continue not to see any of the folders from Sample Section to Percussi've Pool.
Uninstalling the first copy of VSFS, downloading a new copy, and installing that did not remove the problem.
Anybody have any idea what could be causing this? It makes me completely unable to use this program.

  • Creating new instruments from soundfonts:

    Hi all,
I'm still pretty much a newbie with GarageBand and have been working with it recently by using midi files imported into the program and selecting different instruments to get a more pleasing arrangement, with the aim of making my own custom backing tracks. I have followed Hangtime's excellent tutorial and made some custom instruments from Sf2s downloaded from Hammersound and Fox-gieg. Now, the problem I have is this ... some of those custom instruments (annoyingly, the best ones usually) will not play when I reset to the start of the midi track but strangely, if I change to an instrument that will play (such as JamPack instrument) and play a short section and then change back to the custom instrument it will play (that's how I know it's a good sound by the way) ... but when I go back to the start of the track (midi file track, not audio recorded) then the pesky instrument will not play!! If I scroll back to just near the beginning of the track the instrument will play but if I go right back to the beginning of the track ,it won't play. I need the instrument to play right from the start in order for it to play all the way through when I then go to 'Share' and 'Export to Disc' to convert the file to m4a.
Hangtime, if you can throw some light on the problem I would be most grateful mate ... or anyone else on the forum for that matter. I would appreciate the help.
I have resolved a lot of my initial problems like the bass sounds being an octave lower when playing midi files (solution: use the pitch adjust in the edit section) and so on by referring to earlier posts in this excellent forum ... but I haven't come across this.
    Best regards ... Rainbow32

    Hi SoulRed12,
No worries, I'm glad to get follow up replies to resolve this one and I apologise to yoodler for not getting back but at the time ... I did not fully understand his reply as I did not (at the time) pick up on the reference to Dent du midi which is a freely available program which may be the solution to the problem. If you refer back a few pages to my earlier post re: tonewheel organ sounds not playing you will see this was resolved by using that program ... it was brought to my notice via Gary Sumak's reply and I am so grateful as this little program sorts the problem for those tonewheel organs but should also work with instruments created from soundfonts. It converts the midi track to aif and you then assign the software instrument of your choice from your menu (in this case the instrument you have created from your soundfont) and it should then play through each time correctly. It will only cure those soundfont instruments that are playing 'hit and miss' if you like ... it will not help those soundfont created instruments that yoodler mentions that 'do not take' and which may be caused by using GS files ... I don't know.
I spent a day a while back before posting this thread and downloaded lots of likely soundfonts and converted them ... gave myself repetitive strain injury to my wrist in my enthusiasm and then found that nearly all of those instruments did not actually 'take' or played intermittently and eventually gave up on the whole idea and removed them all. I have found that the Ben Boldt and AMG series of instrument expansion packs and the Jam Packs from Apple pretty much cater to my needs ... but for the odd instrument not available in those collections then it may well be worth downloading several soundfonts of that one instrument and using the Dent du midi program for any of those 'tricksters' that play 'hit and miss'.
    Best regards ... Rainbow32:)

  • All my loops are present in the browser, but when I drag a sound over it doesn't match.  With beats, I get no percussion sounds, just a basic 8-bit type sound.

I had a critical failure on my Mac and have slowly been rebuilding it, but Garageband just doesn't want to cooperate.  This is actually a two-fold problem.   First problem is; all of my loops are in my browser and when I click on one for a preview sound, it works fine.  But, when I drag it into the project window I lose any the correct sound.  They still have sound, but it will be a basic "blip, bloop" type 8-bit sound.  This is namely with any kind of beats or percussion.  Say I try to use a Trip Hop loop, all I get is the blips and bloops but no hi-hats, no snare, no kind of percussion sound at all.
Second problem:  As I said before, all of my loops are correct in my loop browser, but they didn't seem to transfer over the MIDI sounds that I can usually choose from in the Track Info pane.  It still only has the most basic sounds to choose from.  Before, I had all the different MIDI sounds to choose from, such as Star Sweeper and the like, but those are all gone.  I've tried to drag-and-drop into that pane but it won't let me.
I really hope that someone has an answer for this, I have a lot of projects I've been working on for a long time that are basically trash right now because I can't do anything with them.

    Missing Instruments:
The pop-up menu at the top of the track info pane filters the instruments: Make sure it is set to "show all".
I am not sure at all about your drums, however. You do not drag your drum-loops to tracks with different instruments, do you?
What you describe, looks exactly like something where transposing the drum loops and shifting the notes. This would cause the beats to be mapped to different instruments. And this is not suposed to happen, when you set the key of your project or transpose the master track.
Does this happen only in your account, or also when you launch GarageBand form a diffrent user account? You might create a new account forr testing, to explore this.
    Regards
    Léonie

  • Looking for a specific soundfont

I want to characterize an old sound card. It's a yamaha YM 382. I belei've it was used in the original sound blaster cards. Is there a soundfont for this card I can loan into viena soundfont studio? How would I find it's

I thought you might have this issue, and I had meant to point out a problem with your workflow, but it slipped my mind.
The file you're working with is a .psd, and it contains 1 layer, rather than being a flattened image. So what's happening is that when you drop the file into the Sequence it becomes a Nested Item.
That's why when you double click it, it opens in its own sequence, constrained to its own dimensions. When you add the basic 3d filter, you are then animating it in that sequence, rather than the main sequence.
Without going back to Photoshop, the easiest fix is to
    1. Cut the effect from the clip.
    2. Go back to the main sequence and Option Double Click the clip. You are now accessing the master clip, rather than its subclip which is the single .psd layer.
    3. Paste the filter. I believe your keyframed motion will be retained, and the clip will now rotate in the main sequence without cropping.
    4. Remember from here on that to access the filter again you have to Option Double Click the layer.

  • SoundFonts - small problem. Please help me because this is very important to

Hello everyone. I have just upgraded from a SoundBlaster Audigy, to a SoundBlaster X-Fi Music edition.
I have a collection of soundfonts which I used to use on my Audigy. They worked fine. Now that I'm using the X-Fi, they all work well, apart from one, and the one that doesn't work is my most used, most important soundfont.
    Description of problem:
When I run my midi file, it starts playing the music using the new soundfont, but after about 0 seconds or so, the sound stops - even though the music is still playing. I then can occasionally hear a note or two, but its no longer playing properly. All my other soundfonts work perfectly, so I really dont understand why this one would cause troubles. They are all .SF2 files.
    Other Information:
) I am using "SoundFont Bank Manager" to load the soundfonts. They all work great apart from the main one I want to use. It worked fine on my Audigy. The Cache part says 7.3mb Used/ 229.8mb Free.
    2) I am on Windows XP Professional - Service pack 2.
    3) The rest of my computer is very powerful. Its a core2duo, 2gig of RAM, 320gig seagate barracuda hard dri've etc. Regularly defragged.
    4) I have the latest soundcard drivers (And direct X, video drivers, bios drivers, etc.).
    5) I have no other problems with the computer.
    6) My Midi program is Guitar Pro, which plays special midi files. It is set up properly, and it plays everything perfectly - using all my soundfonts, except the one I most want to use..
Please help me get this working. It is very important to me, and I need to get it working as soon as possible. I'll keep searching this thread incase I need to give any more information.
Thanks in advance.Message Edited by acrobat on 02-09-200705:0 AM

Why do you have two threads dealing with the exact same issue. That makes it confusing and hard to follow your issue to help you.
Who is your carrier, I asked in the other thread?
Have you tried YOUR sim card in another device, what happens?

  • Audigy 2 ZS Platinum - Midi, Soundfonts, Squeal of Death

Hi, I bought the Audigy 2 ZS Platinum to get professional Soundfont playback triggered by an external midi keyboard, Soundfont creation using Vienna, and ideally Cubasis with ASIO.
I'm having major problems: When I try and play Soundfonts from either the SoundFont Bank Manager or Vienna, after a couple of minutes I get a high-pitched tone and the computer locks up. I've heard this is the infamous "squeal of death," but am unsure of the fix on my particular machine:
    Gateway V800CSE computer
    Windows 98 SE
    Intel Celeron 800 MHz processor
    Intel Santorini motherboard
    Intel 810e chipset
    BIOS update to P05
    192 MB ram
Intel Ultra ATA Storage Driver 620
    DirectX 9.0c
    2 PCI slots
Power Supply: Astec ATX90-3405 (90 watts)
The computer is generally rock-steady - I can spend hours using applications like Firefox, Wordpad, Acrobat Reader, etc. with no crashes. Audio CDs seem to play fine for hours through the Audigy 2.
I've done the equivalent of a clean sweep: wiped the drive and restored from backup to a pre-Creative state, then reinstalled the Creative stuff. No help.
The squeal/lockup happens whether I use the on-screen keyboard or an external midi keyboard, and regardless of what banks are loaded - even small banks like the default 4MB GM presets. It seems to happen at some random point during Soundfont usage, anywhere from one minute to 30 minutes into a session - but it always happens.
I'm not playing difficult passages with a lot of polyphony. In fact the squeal of death sometimes happens when playing just a simple melodic line. I tried allocating more ram in Soundfont Bank Manager, but this didn't seem to help. Creative Diagnostics shows no problems.
I've heard that turning off ACPI sometimes eliminates lockups with Creative cards. However, Windows 98SE installs ACPI by default, and my BIOS doesn't let me turn it off. I understand that by installing from a command line and using a setup switch I can install Win98SE without ACPI. But although I'm handy with computers and good at following instructions, I don't know command line syntax.
Could someone please walk me through the steps? Let's say I boot from a floppy, activate CD-ROM support, get the A-prompt, and put the Windows 98 SE CD in the drive. (Are those the initial steps?) Now what are the exact command lines I would use to run the setup switch, which is something like setup/pi ?
Please help. The card is of no use to me if I can't get professional Soundfont operation. I will have to return it.
I've tried uninstalling the WDM drivers and installing the VXD drivers using Creative's CTZAPXX. That seemed to stop the squeal of death, but greatly limits midi functionality. For example, the WDM drivers recognized that my Audigy 2 ZS Platinum has two sets of midi inputs/outputs: one on the gameport, and one on the platinum drive. It's the platinum ones you can use out of the box, because the adapters are included. Under the WDM drivers, I could choose the second midi port and my external keyboard would trigger the Soundfonts. But under the VXD drivers only one midi port appears in Control Panel or midi apps, and I guess it's the gameport, because all notes from my external keyboard hooked up to the platinum drive's midi input are now ignored. I reinstalled the VXD drivers, but same result. The platinum drive is definitely hooked up; the audio inputs and outputs are working, and my external midi keyboard is definitely sending midi notes.
Could Creative or anyone please confirm that the VXD drivers don't see the platinum drive's midi port? Is there a workaround? If the WDM drivers are unstable, and Win98SE users have to fall back to the VXD drivers to get reliable operation, then could Creative please include a gameport-to-midi adapter in the box, so platinum customers can still use midi?
Are there any other reports of the squeal of death with the 810e chipset?
I'm using DirectX 9.0c. Is this appropriate, or should I be using an earlier version?
The power supply on my machine may be a bit wimpy. Could that be a problem? The published specs are:
    Wattage 90 watt
    Input 90 - 135 V, normal 115 V
    180 - 265 V, normal 230 V
    # Output + 3.3 V (0 A min, 6.0 A max)
    # + 5 V (1.0 A min, 10 A max)
    # + 12 V (.02 A min, 1.5 A max)
    # -12 V (0 A min, 0.2 A max)
    # + 5 VSB (0 A min, 1.4 A max)
Finally, how often is the squeal of death solved by simply exchanging the card? (It's only a week old.)
Thank you in advance for any help you can give me. Best regards.

    - No, my BIOS doesn't have "PCI Config 32 Clock Retry."
I took some time to look back in my archives. The canonical SOD problem was seen on WinXP on certain Dell systems using Intel motherboards incorporating certain new (at the time) Intel chipsets. I have the i815 chipset referenced in my archives, though not the i810. Dell systems, such as the 8100, did not have access to said BIOS setting, and needed a BIOS update enabling the bit to resolve the SOD problem.
The main variant of the problem did not occur with the VxD drivers at the time, because those drivers were able to enable BIOS settings. WDM drivers were not permitted to change BIOS settings, so the problem did surface with them on susceptible chipsets. Unless there has been a change in this area to the VxD drivers, your reporting hangs with them implies implies a different problem.
    - My other PCI slot was occupied by a Rockwell 56K modem, but I've done a clean reinstall (WDM) without the modem card. I haven't done enough testing to fully report on results. I did get the squeal of death after an hour, but it could be related to a public domain soundfont that was not well-behaved. (Or maybe the Audigy 2 ZS is not well-behaved!)
I really don't think there's a way a soundfont can cause the PCI bus to seize up. I think it would be a good idea to try moving the soundcard to the slot the modem was in, if you haven't already.
In mentioning my computer's power supply, I was relating this to the squeal of death, not the midi port on the platinum drive failing to appear under the VXD drivers.
So was I, although I was keying on your use of an external keyboard, probably incorrectly. You are describing your system as very stable unless the soundcard is used a specific way, and I didn't get the sense that there would be much difference in power requirements involved in that.
I'm thinking that PCI systems are designed to function within certain tolerances. A 56K modem card might make lighter demands on PCI resources than an Audigy 2 card. The modem's handshaking protocols might make it oblivious to momentary timing errors, while the Audigy 2 card might be less forgiving of a wimpy power supply or a PCI subsystem that's not quite up to par. Just a theory. Anyway, I may try the card in another machine and see if it fares better. Wish it weren't so finicky!
That's not bad thinking, and trying it in another machine is a great idea, though one often not very practical for customers who may only have one machine available.
Last night I was noticing that with my external keyboard driving the platinum drive's midi input, there are random delays. The notes will be tight for a few seconds, but then a couple of notes that were played cleanly on the keyboard will spill over each other like dwarves tumbling out of a silly car. Is this a known issue with the platinum drive's midi port when playing soundfonts, or could this be a symptom of an underlying timing issue with my PCI subsystem? (I know there may not be an easy answer to questions like this.)
Has anyone compared the "tightness" of gameport midi vs. platinum drive midi? Is gameport midi any tighter? (I'm on a budget, and don't want to shell out for a gameport-to-midi adapter only to get more of the same.)
I've not heard of this particular complaint before and I have listened a lot. PCI-level problems tend to be of the nature of snap-crackle-pop symptoms (or hangs). What you describe sounds more like a problem with something like interrupt lockout. Without knowing Windows internals very well, a driver coping with lots of recoverable errors might cause that, or if a device causing lots of interrupts is sharing an IRQ with the soundcard, or sometimes multiprocessing support has weaknesses which lead to interrupt latency issues.
When loading and unloading different soundfonts, is memory fragmentation much of an issue? (either PC memory or the Audigy 2's internal memory?).
It can be an issue with being able to load very large soundfonts, but not really much otherwise. The A2 doesn't really have internal memory.
With the Audigy series you're no longer limited to 32 MB soundfont banks. You can load much larger banks into PC memory, but the PC has to send chunks of sound data to the Audigy as needed. I'm wondering if this has impacted stability. Maybe it requires some intensive bursts of data to be sent from PC memory over the PCI bus to the Audigy 2 card.
That part is done on demand, and is driven by what you are playing at the moment rather than everything in the soundfont. If the system is sufficiently memory-tight, allocating more system memory to soundfont storage might lead to excessive paging activity (which could also be behind erratic sluggishness in the system's response to MIDI keyboard events). (In fact, 192MB of system RAM doesn't sound like a lot, even for Win98, when you need to dedicate MB's of it to soundfont storage.)
Does anybody know if there are things you can do during a long session to defragment memory so that no holes develop?
Problems in that area are far more likely to be expressed as dropped notes that to be behind system hangs.
Vienna reports that the Audigy 2 ZS has 12 MB DRAM in Synth A and 12 MB DRAM in Synth B. Does that mean it has a total of 24 MB onboard RAM?
It probably means that 12MB of PC system memory has been allocated to shared use by the two virtual synths. If you have set soundfont memory larger than that and Vienna still says 12 MB, it's probably simply a bit confused in its assumptions. The soundcard doesn't have onboard RAM, although the soundcards Vienna was written for do.

  • What is the best standard SoundFont file for SB Audigy

There are 2 soundfont files come with the installation software. They are CT2MGM.SF2 and CT4MGM.SF2. CT2MGM.SF2 has a smaller file size (2 MB) but has a newer soundfont version (v 2.) while CT4MGM.SF2 has a larger file size (4 MB) but has an older soundfont version (v 2.0). I wonder what is the best soundfont file for my SB Audigy ES. Can I use the larger soundfont file (ie. 8 MB) with my card and how can I get it's Thank all for your help.

I doubt if you'll find enough duplicated files to make a difference.  Also there may be numerious files with the same name that are needed.  Running some of the general dup finders can damage iPhoto libraries.
You best bet is to get an external HD, formatted OS X Extended (journaled) and move files to it.  Many move their iPhoto and iTunes libraries to the EHD and run them from there.  That ususally frees up a lot more space than the recommended minimum free space, 10 - 15 GB.

  • Can not load the Sonivox 250 Meg GM Wave table into soundfonts manag

I have an Creative Xi-FI platnium and no matter what I try I can NOT load this sound font.. I can load it into Vienna soundfont manager.. I have tried adjusting the cache level (I have 2 GB of RAM BTW in my system), I keep getting an error can not load. Please HELP!!! I even tried the registry edit.. It did not help one bit.. appears its an issue with the program! What should I do?

hmmm for some reason when you call your EJB and it throws an exception, the JTA transaction is marked as rollbakc so the BPEL EM engine fails to save the instance.
Could you please provide us some additional pieces of information:
    obversion.bat.
The exact exception that your EJB throws.
    JTA configuration of your bean
Have you looked at the BankTransfer demo?

  • Soundfonts on the E-Mu 1212m

i'm newbie to the 1212m card and i was wondering if this card supports the use of soundfonts. also, does this card need a seperate midi module to generate gm sounds? i don't want to always have to use midi plug-ins or softsynths (i.e. dxi, vst, yamaha-xg, etc.) to play back gm, cpu strain
i've used sb live cards in the past that not only support sounfonts but also play midi just fine. it seems pointless to me for the 1212m (which costs more than the most of the live cards) to be unable to play gm sounds. then again that could be the inner newbie talking. if anyone can help me out, i would appreciate it!

I am on the same quest as you for the EMU 0404 card. It is odd that these cards do not support SoundFonts.
I have found links to a SFZ plugin that supposedly supports the use of SoundFonts through a plug in mode. See http://www.productionforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=447
I have not tried this since the card is supplied with soft synth (Proteus LE) that sounds okay anyway.
I am curious as to what the advantages of the soundfonts are if you have a Proteus LE type software?

  • Re: soundfont synth. what actually does it do and how does it do it?

ive got 100 sf2.s and love them. i save them as midi software instruments if i want them to become part of my armentarium. What is this soundfont synth i seem to lack?
If it is an AU and placed in the same folder with my sf2's what is it going to enable me to do? Please be specific, basic, instructive and kind. ( if you have experience with it) Does it improve anything?

So, what would one want to use to use Soundfont on an
Intel Mac (new Macbook w/512 ram).
You don't need anything extra to use a SoundFont on an intel Mac. SF2s are simply data files, any machine running any software on any platform can use a SoundFont if it was designed to do so (and GarageBand is).
Currently to access alt banks, when using an intel Mac, you'd have to use a MIDI keyboard that allows you to send the commands to change banks. The SoundFont itself, will still work fine even without a MIDI keyboard.
