Perfect audio - no video through mirroring from Macbook Pro

Apple TV 3 working perfectly, except when airplay mirroring from my Macbook Pro.
I received perfect audio but no video. I moved 2 weeks ago and cannot get it to work since - it is connected through HDMI so would expect both to work. Network working well - Time Capsule network.
Please help!

Hi c9wilko,
Which MacBook Pro do you have exactly? Based on the model you have you'll either need a DVI or MiniDisplay Port adapter. If you were sold a MiniDisplay Port adapter then you might want to consider a MiniDisplay Port to HDMI adapter based on the type of TV you have.
There's no audio out via the MiniDisplay Port, unless you have the latest iteration of the MacBook Pro that was just recently announced. All other MacBook Pros will require a separate audio cable from digital out jack on your machine.

  • Any perfect audio hardware setup with the new Macbook Pro?

I'm still not sure if to go for the new Macbook Pro 2.8 ghz, or the 6 months earlier 2.5 ghz model (march 2008).
I love to go for the new Macbook Pro, but I'm not sure about my setup. Now I have:
    - extern 7200 rpm bus powered LaCie firewire 800 hard drive
    - Saffire with firewire 400 (thinking about moving to Apogee Duet)
Will the express card really help? I've read that if you connect a firewire 400 device to the express card, the firewire 800 won't work at 800 speed, but at 400? Also that a bus powered hard drive doesn't work, and that it needs it's own power to run with the express card?
    Bottom line:
What would be the perfect audio hardware setup with the new Macbook Pro? I gladly invest in a different audio interface (or anything else) if it really fits and works as pro audio setup!

I've read that if you connect a firewire 400 device to the express card, the firewire 800 won't work at 800 speed, but at 400?
I don't think this is right. As I understand it, the advantage of having one of your devices on an express card slot is specifically so it is on its own bus.
Then both devices will operate on their own speed.
However, this is true for the older model Macbook Pros when you use both FW ports that are built in, because even though the machine has two ports, they each feed one firewire bus. So if you have a device plugged into each port, the one plugged into the 800 will only run at 400 speed because they're both on the same bus. Using an express card means both devices can operate at their own speed.
If you want the newer machine I think you should get it. Then you can buy a firewire 400 express card, plug your interface into that, and plug your FW 800 drive into the main firewire port. This will give you better performance from your peripherals than an older machine with both devices plugged into the built in FW ports.
    Good Luck!

  • Apple TV 2 choppy video playback when mirroring from Macbook Pro (Yosemite) and Macbook Air (Yosemite) but not iOS devices

Video playback is choppy (cuts out every 30-45 seconds) when air playing from both my MacBook Air 1.3 GHz Intel Core i5 running Yosemite and my husbands new MacBook Pro, but runs perfectly when mirroring from any of our iOS devices (iPhone 6+, iPad mini 3, etc.) We have Apple TV 2. This problem just started a few weeks ago, was working fine around Christmas. The problem seems to have coincidentally started right after our son tried plugging in and setting up his Chromecast on our tv. I disconnected the Chromecast, but we still have the problem. All of our software if up to date and I've tried disconnecting blue tooth, we do not have a microwave and our wifi network has a very strong signal. We have an Airport Extreme base station. Is there a solution to our problem?

    Hi leahmturner,
I see that you are experiencing an issue with choppiness while AirPlay Mirroring from your computers to your Apple TV. I have an article that contains some helpful troubleshooting steps for you regarding this issue:
About AirPlay Mirroring in OS X - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201343
    Optimizing image quality
    Resolution matching modes
You can choose between two desktop resolution matching modes that let you select which display will have the best image. When AirPlay Mirroring is turned on, select an option under "Match Desktop Size To:" in the AirPlay Mirroring menu extra.
Match Desktop Size To: Apple TV
AirPlay Mirroring changes the desktop resolution to best match your Apple TV, resulting in a 16:9 image that fills the HDTV screen. This setting often produces the sharpest image on the HDTV. The aspect ratio and/or resolution of the built-in Mac display may change to accommodate the Apple TV.
Match Desktop Size To: This Mac
AirPlay Mirroring scales the contents of the desktop to fit on the Apple TV, leaving the resolution of your Mac's display unchanged. Use this setting for the sharpest image on your Mac's display. Depending on your Mac model, the resulting image may not fill the HDTV screen.
    Troubleshooting AirPlay Mirroring
If you don't see mirroring options
If your Mac and Apple TV are on the same network, but no AirPlay Mirroring menu appears, your Apple TV may be asleep. Simply press a button on your Apple TV remote to wake it up. After a few seconds, the AirPlay Mirroring menu extra appears. If you still don't see the options you expect, make sure your Apple TV has the current software update installed. Also make sure that you have the "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" option selected in the Displays pane of System Preferences.
If the menu bar or Dock is cropped
Some HDTVs have bezels that cover a small percentage of the screen. This can result in a slight cropping of a full-resolution HDTV image. Depending on the HDTV model, AirPlay Mirroring may automatically adjust the picture size to prevent cropping.  If you are using OS X Mountain Lion or later, and you see cropping of the menu bar or Dock when using AirPlay Mirroring, toggle the Overscan correction option in Displays preferences.
    Minimize video post-processing
HDTVs often apply picture quality enhancements intended to improve the look of film and video sources. In some cases, these enhancements can lead to over-sharpening artifacts when displaying your Mac desktop. Some HDTV models have built-in settings to change or disable the enhancements for use with a computer (computer, presentation, or game modes). Otherwise, the controls for sharpness, detail enhancement and noise reduction can be used to optimize the appearance of the Mac desktop. Consult your HDTV’s manual for guidance on the appropriate settings for use with a computer.
    Firewall security settings
If you use a firewall, make sure the following firewall security options have been set to allow AirPlay Mirroring to work:
Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu ().
Click Security & Privacy, then click Firewall.
Click the lock icon to unlock it if it's locked, then type an administrator name and password.
    Click Firewall Options.
Deselect (uncheck) the “Block all incoming connections” checkbox.
Select (check) the “Automatically allow signed software to receive incoming connections” checkbox.
Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!
    Regards,
    Braden

  • How to get audio to go to tv using mirroring from macbook pro

How do I get the audio to go to my tv using mirroring with a macbook pro?

As it turns out, my external speakers right channel had failed. Audio and system alert sounds were "underwhelming" on the built-in iMac speakers but now play back clearly via the Apple TV over my shoulder.
You can also find audio mirroring options in iTunes (bottom right corner). But it doesn't send System sounds or anything that isn't playing directly in iTunes.

  • Mirroring from MacBook Pro to ATV, with the use of a VPN: Netflix no longer working

Since upgrading to Yosemite, I cannot mirror Netflix from my MacBook Pro to my ATV. I would use the Netflix on the ATV however I currently live in China and need to use a VPN. Mirroring works for Safari, Itunes and all other programs except for Netflix. The error message is ensure your monitor is HDCP compliant and is not mirrored using Airplay.
Anyone know how I can fix this?

I believe so. I was able to to mirror netflix through the use of VPN prior to the Yosemite upgrade.

  • Mirroring from Macbook Pro to ATV2

I hope someone can help me...  from what I read everywhere my macbook pro should give me the option to turn on mirroring.  but sadly I can't do it..
    I have Macbook Pro - Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) - Late 2011
When I go to my System Preferences>Display...  I don't have option to turn on mirror for my ATV2 (I have a ATV3 as well)
    Any thoughts?

    Actually disregard that.
You will need to update to OS X Mavericks. Since mirroring requires OS X 10.8 or later.

  • ITunes library audio is choppy an intermittent from Macbook Pro

I've seen a few posts similar to this and just want to see if there's a workaround that I'm missing.
When trying to play music from my iTunes library via home sharing on my apple tv from my Macbook Pro, audio is intermittent, choppy and sometimes won't play at all. I recently upgraded to the MBP from an iMac, and because I had both machines, I had the benefit of a control when running my test to make sure it was the MBP and not something with apple tv or iTunes. As far as I can tell, it is the macbook pro. While having both the MBP and the iMac hooked up to the same modem, same router and same apple tv, utilizing the same iTunes library, the audio would play flawlessly as it always has from the iMac. However, when I'd try to play the same music from the MBP, I get the long spinning status wheel (a sign that the audio is not going to work well), and then the the choppy audio, which makes it unlistenable.
I've tried the tricks I've seen in other posts...turned off spotlight search in system preferences, tried turning off Bluetooth on both the MBP and on Apple TV. Nothing thus far has worked.
This seems to be something connected to Yosemite and the MBP. If anyone else has a suggestion, I'd love to read about it. As it stands, I now do not have a home audio system as iTunes > Apple TV was my home system (running out to a receiver). I cut cable a few months back and have thus spent much more time listening to music at home, so this is of course quite a let down as I can no longer listen to my music. It was great on the iMac as I had a reliable, stable connection to my iTunes library. Since connecting the MBP, I now cannot listen to music, aside from the less-than-stellar iTunes radio stations on the Apple TV.

Thanks for the reply. Yes I'm aware that Apple doesn't read these, that's why I included the phrases "...just want to see if there's a workaround that I'm missing" and "If anyone else has a suggestion, I'd love to read about it." I was hoping that perhaps another user has had similar issues and discovered something that I haven't that might alleviate this problem. I've submitted a few bug reports to Apple about this, under Yosemite, Macbook Pro, and Apple TV.

  • HT201335 AirPlay Mirroring is working from iPad and iPhone, but not from Macbook Pro.  How to fix?

I can see and activate AirPlay Mirroring from Macbook but nothing displays on the TV when mirroring is activated (screen changes from Apple TV menu to blank screen only).  I have 3rd generation Apple TV and a brand new Macbook Pro, so AirPlay Mirroring is supported by both devices.  I can display video content on the TV from my MacBook from iTunes by selecting to display on Apple TV instead of my computer, but it does not work for mirroring.
For reference, when I activate AirPlay Mirroring from iPad or iPhone, it works perfectly and content is displayed on my TV.
Has anyone else had this problem and know how to fix it?

There are 4 confusing pages of updates listed at Apples website for Boot Camp. I am having a hard time understanding what I need and don't need. For example, what version of Boot Camp do I have? I have Boot Camp Assistant version 3.0.4. Does this mean I have Boot Camp ver 3?
You have Mac OS X Snow Leopard, so you are going to use Boot Camp 3 on Windows. After installing Windows 7 on your MacBook, insert the Snow Leopard DVD and install the Boot Camp drivers from here. Then, as the Boot Camp drivers that your Snow Leopard disc contain are outdated, open Apple Software Update on Windows to install the most recent Boot Camp drivers.
    D_avid wrote:
    2. The printed Boot Camp instructions do not explain the process of using downloaded Windows drivers; the instuctions only refer to drivers on the original disks. I have the original install disks from around mid 2010 but I am sure many things have been updated by now. Wouldn't the best idea be to download and install? But the instructions only cover using the original disks. How do I use downloaded drivers?
On Snow Leopard, you can only download the Boot Camp drivers for the Late 2010 MacBook Air. On Lion and Mountain Lion, you have to download the Boot Camp drivers for all the computers. If you try to download the Boot Camp drivers on Snow Leopard with your computer, you will get a message telling that there aren't any drivers to download for your MacBook Pro

most reliable method found is get an AppleTV hooked to TV, and get program called BEAMER (free trial or $15 purchase application).     Lots of programs CAN stream to TV via wifi, but many of them get audio syncing wrong/bad.   Best addition upgrade to any Apple PC or laptop isnt internal, but the AppleTV     BEAMER app is the best Apple/Mac app out there to me, ...  Ive got 7 Terabytes of Videos, ...the Beamer app takes in any video format, its just incredible.

Many apps are not completely removed if the .app file is trashed (which is what I believe you've done so far).
If you don't want to dig through the system to manually remove library files, I recommend the use of AppCleaner, which does the job for you.

  • Making Calls From Landline Through My iMac & Macbook Pro

Hi, being able to make and receive calls from my iPhone 4s through my iMac & Macbook Pro is good, but I (and from what I can see, so many others) also want to be able to make and receive calls from my landline through my iMac, Macbook Pro. Why does Apple not allow you a way of doing this, why can’t they include a way to plug in your home phone through the computer and an app to do this.
I only have so much credit on my mobile and can not ring all numbers from my iPhone without it costing me extra (I know it costs to make calls using this feature anyway), but I have to use my mobile to call 13 & 1300 numbers (as it is already paid for in my mobile credit) but it costs me extra to call these from my home phone, and I have to call 1800 numbers from my home phone as it is only free from landlines which I understand, but when I run out of credit on my mobile I have to use my home phone (Landline), so it renders this feature useless.
I do not understand why they can not include a way of doing this (without VOIP, Skype or anything that is going to cost you more money), like we used to be able to do with older modems, and dial-up etc. I have ADSL2+ and it seems there is no provision to do this by any means, and it also seems the better all the companies try to make technology, the less we are actually able to do with it, and the more backwards it becomes.
Apple would make an awful lot of people jump for joy if they allowed you a way to do these things. Don’t get me wrong, I love Apple for so many reasons, and I swore I would never go with them, but got sick to death of PC’s, Windows and the troubles associated with them, that I took the plunge. I will NEVER go back to PC or Windows. I do appreciate that Apple is so much better and cheaper in a lot of things, but making things easier for the home and Business user with features they need and want would be so very much appreciated. All I seem to see is what Apple don’t have, and what so many people want, but can’t get, that it is a shame that it all seems to be about the dollar now (Charge more for less) and not customer satisfaction.
PLEASE, if anyone (or Apple) knows of a way to do this without costing more I would love to know, as I have a disability and this would make my (and so many others, even without a disability) lives so much easier. Thanks.

"why can’t they include a way to plug in your home phone through the computer and an app to do this.": Because Apple doesn't control the land line phone. Some providers allow it using their modem, using a app made by the provider/telephone manufacturer, but most don't. Apple simply can't make software for all the phones out there. The problem doesn't come from Apple, it comes from the internet/landline providers.
