Perform Incremental Backup in Oracle 8i

Hi all,
I would much appreciate if anyone can provide me steps to do incremental back up using oracle 8i.

1) Normally, when we're talking about backups, we're talking about physical backups, i.e. backups of a database. Exports can be useful additions to a proper backup strategy, but should not be used in place of proper physical backups.
2) You cannot do an incremental export in a useful fashion. There is an "incremental export" option which will export the entire contents of an entire table if a single row changes, which may be useful if you have a schema with lots of large, totally static tables, but that's pretty rare.

  • Perform incremental backup to drive which has moved?

I used Time Machine in 10.5 for the first time a few days ago, before installing Snow Leopard. I used a drive connected to the USB port. After installing Snow Leopard, Time Machine performed incremental backups to the same drive.
Today I disconnected the drive from the USB port and connected it my Airport Extreme, which is its usual home. But Time Machine wants to do a full backup now, instead of an incremental one. (I stopped the backup when I realised this.)
How can I make Time Machine continue making incremental backups?

you can't. the problem here is not snow leopard but the fact that remote backups are stored differently. they are stored inside sparse bundles while directly attached ones are stored directly in a folder on the drive. your only option is to let TM do a full backup. if you don't want double backups you can erase the drive first. but DO NOT try deleting old backups from finder.

  • Incremental Backup using "imsbackup"

    Dear every body,
I have a trouble and need the help from you, please help me in this case if you can, thanks.
I want to backup incrementally my mailboxes with "imsbackup" command. I have tested following below example but not succeeded:
    1. I send/receive email between 2 users in my domain at 08:00AM.
    2. I performed FULL backup the whole message store using imsbackup
    3. At 09:00AM I send/receive another email between 2 users in my domain
    4. I performed INCREMENTAL backup the whole message store using "imsbackup -d 20091217:083000....." but my backup file including the messages that I sent before 08:30AM
I have done this several times and get the same result.
Please kindly help me in this case, how can I use imsbackup to incrementally backup my mailboxes.
Any help and advices from you is appreciated.
Thanks all of you so much.

    Hi Shane,
Thanks so much for your response.
The version of Messaging Server I am using is:
    {color:#ff0000}bash-3.00# ./imsimta version
    Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 7.0-3.01 64bit (built Dec 9 2008){color}
    For your question:
Does this problem occur if you incrementally back up a single mailbox e.g.
    ./imsbackup -d 20091217:083000 ... user/<uid>/
    My Answer is:
I have not performed above step yet because I want to backup mailboxes of all users.
    For your question:
Is the time/timezone set correctly on the server?
    My answer is:
Yes, of courses. I already set time/timezone correctly. I also checked the time stamp of newly created email in message store in server, their date are correct.
    For your question:
Are you in daylight savings time i.e. you shift the imsbackup incremental time back-forward an hour and get the correct result?
    My answer is:
    I already tried many times but got the same result. For example, At{color:#ff0000} 9AM Dec 16th 2009{color} I sent an email. At{color:#ff0000} 9AM one day later (Dec 17th 2009){color} I sent another email. I performed incremental backup using{color:#ff0000} "./imsbackup -d 20091216:120000 -f- / > /email_backup/incremental.120000".{color}
The backup file I got contained the email I sent at 9AM Dec 16th.
    Any advice on this ?
Anyway, thanks so much for your help. I am awaiting your response.

  • ITunes incremental backup

    Hi,
I have used the iTunes backup to disc feature to backup my entire library. My whole music library is now secured on 17 DVD. From now, I hope to rely on the incremental backup feature to backup any added songs since this first backup.
Here is my question; does someone know where iTunes is actually storing information about the incremental backup, i.e. which songs have already been backed up and which are not?
I'm asking this question because I had reinstalled an OS. And I do not want to lose my ability to perform incremental backup. Is it store within the library files themself or is it store in some other files?
    Thanks!

    hi!
    thanks for inputs.
PT wrote: "I use an external drive to do backups of my library..."
my library is actually standing on an external drive and is around 90Go. buying another external drive is really not the good solution for me. so, I want to have a periodic backup on DVD.
Mike wrote: "This way all I need to do is crate a new PL of the tunes added since the last b/u and burn only that PL."
that's a really good idea. in fact, you just made me realize the existence of the "Date added" field. this option is a good alternative to the incremental features. ...or maybe its actually the way that the iTunes incremental features is actually working.
tough, as you, I'm expecting the iTunes incremental features to be within the library files. I was just seeking for a confirmation of this and avoid having to burn the first 17DVD of already made with the backup feature.

  • Freeware Incremental Backup Application

Can anyone advise a good freeware application that will perform incremental backups?
    ibook 1.33 GHz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1 GB RAM

I recommend "Backup 3" very highly for what you are interested in doing. However, this program is "free" only with a .Mac membership. I think that .Mac is a good value. Check .Mac out, and see if it interests you. Your can try "Backup 3" free with a .Mac trial subscription. Here is a brief blub on "Backup 3:"
"Using Backup 3 to Keep Your Files Safe:
Although your Mac is very reliable, it’s a good idea to back up your files regularly. With Backup, you can set up your Mac to create regular, automatic backups, so you’ll never have to worry about losing your important documents, photos, music, and more.
The first time you use it, Backup creates a full backup of your files so that all your important information is safe. After that, Backup only backs up new files and files that have changed since your last backup. These incremental backups save time and space when backing up a lot of information."

4.During restore we are copy entire things from repository to flash_recovery_area finaly apply the above mentioned restore command.
Tabelspace incremenatl restore is possible after reimage application server(fresh database)/another server with same database(standby machine) ....?

    2. Daily incremental level 1 backup(differential).
Daily incremental backup size will be around 1 GB.
Now we are facing a problem because of the incremental backup. The incremental backup is taking more than 1 hour time to complete. So we are not able to run it in the production time.its a 24/7 production database.
Please advice how to reduce the incremental backup time ?
Is there any options like what we have in 10g Block change tracking. please advice..

    Hello experts,

Recovering a NOARCHIVELOG Database with Incremental Backups
Restoring a database running in NOARCHIVELOG mode is similar to restoring a database in ARCHIVELOG mode. The main differences are:
Only consistent backups can be used in restoring a database in NOARCHIVELOG mode.
Media recovery is not possible because no archived redo logs exist.
You can perform limited recovery of changes to a database running in NOARCHIVELOG mode by applying incremental backups. The incremental backups must be consistent, like all backups of a database run in NOARCHIVELOG mode, so you cannot make backups of the database when it is open.
When you are recovering a NOARCHIVELOG database, specify the NOREDO option on the RECOVER command to indicate that RMAN should not attempt to apply archived redo logs. Otherwise, RMAN returns an error.
To recover a NOARCHIVELOG database with incremental backups:
After connecting to the target database and the recovery catalog, place the database in a mounted state:
    STARTUP FORCE MOUNT
    Restore and recover the database.
For example, you can perform incomplete recovery with the following commands:
    RESTORE DATABASE
    FROM TAG "consistent_whole_backup";
    RECOVER DATABASE NOREDO;
Open the database with the RESETLOGS option.
For example, enter the following command:
    ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS;

  • Incremental Backup of archivelog

    Hi All,
I'm new in administration of Oracle and confused about the concept of backup and recovery.
    1. The documentation said the archivelog can be deleted once the Backup has been performed. Is that true? But I want to keep them for 3 days
    2. I did an incremental level 0 yesterday and level 1 backup today on the datafiles and archivelog. I found that the data file sizes of both days are quite small and different every day. But for the archivelog backup, the file size is very large and similar every day. What's the proper way to perform incremental level 1 backup on archivelog?
    Thanks in advance!

    1. The "DELETE INPUT" specification in the Backup command deletes ArchiveLogs immediately after the backup. If you do not want them deleted immediately, do not include the DELETE INPUT specification in your Backup command. (the default is to not delete archivelogs immediately).
To delete archivelogs seperately, you can add the command
delete archivelog until time='sysdate-3';to your RMAN backup script to be executed after the backup is completed.
    2. The keyword "INCREMENTAL" in the BACKUP command properly applies to DataFiles (database files0 and not to archivelogs. This is a directive to backup blocks within the datafile that have changed since the last backup. In archivelogs, no blocks are changed within a file -- every file is new.
To prevent an archivelog being backed up again you can use the "NOT BACKED UP 1 TIMES" in your backup command.
    Thus
backup archivelog all not backed up 1 times;will only backup new archivelogs that haven't been backed up at the last run.
See the Oracle Backup and Recovery Reference documentation.

  • Level 0 incremental backup

    Hi,
is the level 0 incremental backup a full backup ?

A level 0 backup is not the same as a full backup in that you cannot perform an incremental backup over a full but only over an incremental level 0. Correct.
Level 0 backup is not same as full backup because it's not possible to take level 1 backup after nonincremental full backup
Level 0 backup is identical in content to full backup because they both take backup of ONLY used data blocks
