Perform incremental backup to drive which has moved?

I used Time Machine in 10.5 for the first time a few days ago, before installing Snow Leopard. I used a drive connected to the USB port. After installing Snow Leopard, Time Machine performed incremental backups to the same drive.
Today I disconnected the drive from the USB port and connected it my Airport Extreme, which is its usual home. But Time Machine wants to do a full backup now, instead of an incremental one. (I stopped the backup when I realised this.)
How can I make Time Machine continue making incremental backups?

you can't. the problem here is not snow leopard but the fact that remote backups are stored differently. they are stored inside sparse bundles while directly attached ones are stored directly in a folder on the drive. your only option is to let TM do a full backup. if you don't want double backups you can erase the drive first. but DO NOT try deleting old backups from finder.

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

I bought a new 3tb internal drive for my windows machine so I can backup an external drive which I didn't know was mac formatted. When I was trying to extend the capacity of my internal drives in wndows so it would add another 3tb I accidentally chose my exteranal drive and it changed the master boot record although I cancelled the process the drive won't mount in my mac anymore. And I get those errors in the disck utility.
The data in it are very important I was trying to backup it to my sohotank harddrive enclosure which already had a 2tb and now a 3tb installed. Any help would be appreaciated.
I'm now trying to create an image of the mac drive and had reformatted my 3tb drive to Mac just so I can place the image there. I don't know if it would work or it will jus take too long because the progress bar is not moving at all.
    Thanks!

  • I have an external hard drive which has my i-photo on it

I have an external hard drive which has my i-photo on it & some movies from i-movie that I have on disk now. But for some reason my ehd has a caution symbol on it & I can't move my event to free up space on my hd so that I can export i-movie events. Help!

Usually the caution symbol means that it's formatted as a PC compatible format like NTFS or most likely FAT32. For iMovie to use it the ehd must be formatted Mac OS Extended. Then iMovie will show it without the caution symbol and you can drag/drop open any Event/Project from that hard drive.
To find out if it's formatted as PC:
Go to the desktop, holding down the Control key click on that ehd and in the pop-menu choose 'Get Info'
Under Format: It will say whether or not it's Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The only way to undo a PC formatted ehd would be to copy everything off of it first, Erase/Format the drive using Disk Utility in the Applications>Utilities folder on your Mac, choosing the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format in the pull-down menu there.

  • I installed all creative suite /cloud products on my main hard drive which has just failed. I can't

I installed all creative suite /cloud products on my main hard drive which has just failed. I can't open the apps on that drive. How can I deauthorize them when the drive is damaged beyond repair and unresponsive?

Kay5000 you are posting in a pubic forum.
As Ankit stated please try installing and activating Creative Cloud on your replacement computer/hard drive.  If you have reached your maximum activation count then you will be prompted to deactivate all your activations.  This will then allow you to activate on the replacement computer/hard drive.
For Creative Suite 6 I would recommend that you try installing as well.  If you receive a message that you have exceeded your amount of allowable activations then please contact our support team directly.  Our support team will be able to increase your activation count and allow you to install on the replacement computer/hard drive.  You can contact our chat support at http://adobe.ly/yxj0t6 to make this request.

  • Replacing Internal Drive which has OS

I want to update my older drives in my Mac Pro with newer, larger capacity ones. I am cool with the physical install aspect (I installed the others successfully earlier).
    My 2 questions are:
    1) I want to replace my first drive which has all my Libraries/Apps/Document/Desktop etc. I tried to copy that drive (as I did with the others) onto an external 4T drive, but got a "do not have permission to copy" (or similar) error message. Is this a migration issue (instead of dragging in Finder?)
    2) When I start up after installing the new drive, won't the computer be looking for the OS?
Confused and definitely not attempting this until I hear some good tips from all of you!
    Thanks!

You need to use a program such as SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
When I start up after installing the new drive, won't the computer be looking for the OS?
Press the Option key at startup, tab as needed, and then change the setting in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.

  • I have a huge iphoto library and an HP simple save hard drive which has been mac formated.

the discssion board states to close iphoto, go to folders, locate, click and drag library to new location (ie-my HP simple save which has been formated to mac)  When I look in my libraries, I have several for libraries, including some that say 6.
When I open one, not all my photos are contained, only a part of my entire iphoto library
which one do I use--and how can to confirm that ALL my photos are on my external hard drive?
    thank you for your help---
    [email protected]

Open a Finder Window and go to your Username then to the Pictures folder. In there you will find a file, actually a folder but I won't get into that, called "iPhoto Library.photolibrary". It is that files (Folder listed as a Package) you need to Copy to your external drive.

  • Perform Incremental Backup in Oracle 8i

    Hi all,
I would much appreciate if anyone can provide me steps to do incremental back up using oracle 8i.

    1) Normally, when we're talking about backups, we're talking about physical backups, i.e. backups of a database. Exports can be useful additions to a proper backup strategy, but should not be used in place of proper physical backups.
    2) You cannot do an incremental export in a useful fashion. There is an "incremental export" option which will export the entire contents of an entire table if a single row changes, which may be useful if you have a schema with lots of large, totally static tables, but that's pretty rare.

  • Freeing up room on my hard drive, which has too many pictures on it

I have the MacBook Air, and have maxed out my hard drive with 3500 pictures. I've been advised to transfer my pictures to DVD's, which I have done. Now what do I do? Do I delete the originals from the iPhoto Library? I'm really nervous about messing up my iPhoto and losing picture viewing capabilities. Any advice on how to free up my hard drive, and still be able to view pictures?

    ncbells:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Another possible solution would be to put your full library on the EHD and have a smaller library on the Air. The Air library could have the more recent or needed files to take on the road.
With the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager you can copy Events or Albums between libraries and keep the keywords, titles and comments intact. That way you can keep the EHD library updated with any photos you obtained while on the road so to speak and have the Air library contain just those photos you need at the moment.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

Please help new (senior) convert to Mac Pro (OS X).  Am following the 'switching to a Mac' portable genius 2nd ed, and as it advised, I bought an external hard drive (a Mac My Word) and partitioned it with one partition for a secondary boot device and another for time machine.  Book implied I needed both.  Seemed to download OK but now when i plug in the external hard-drive it wants to reboot me fresh all over again.  How do I keep the time machine partition going but have the secondary boot device only in case of emergencies?  Do I 'eject' that partition- and if so how do I do it from outside the hard drive (I am not game to reattach it currently)
