Performa 6400/180 not booting up
Performa 6400/180 not booting
Posted: Jan 26, 2006 12:12 PM Reply Email
I have a Performa 6400/180 that I am trying to refurbish as a starter computer for my grandson.
1) When pressing the start button, I receive the start up chime but the system does not boot up
Troubleshooting steps
1) Have inserted OS 9 and attempted to boot from disk
2) Inserted Disk Warrior 3.02 and attempted to boot from disk
3) replaced Hard Drive and repeated above steps
4) Replaced CD-ROM player and repeated above steps
Any suggestions?
Darrell,
We still do not have a clear description of the symptoms. You say the screen is black with a CD in the drive. Is it black with no CD in the drive? Sceen lighting up or not is the critical question. The hard drive has no effect on the screen lighting up or not.
If you have a black screen when there is no CD in the drive, replace the battery. If you have a raster (a grey screen) when there is no CD in, maybe the battery is usuable but replace it anyway if it is more than two years old or if the store sold you an old battery.
If there is a click from the hard drive, that can mean either the drive is OK but is not mounting or the drive has some physical problem. We should always assume the drive can be fixed until we have exausted the possibility. Incidentally, 6400 and other early PowerMacs with IDE hard drive were unreliable at mounting the hard drive when OS 8.0 hard disk driver was copied to the drive. Even a replacement drive may not be formatted for Macintosh and/or using a reliable driver so let's guess this is the most likely culprit for the clicking sound.
Disconnect evrything from the 6400 except the monitor, Apple ADB keyboard and mouse. Be especially carefull to disconnect external speakers and any SCSI cable (a fat cable with a huge connector). This strip down routine is very critical. Don't think I haven't been in your position 50 times.
If the original CD for the 6400 can be found (read the label carefully for the "6400" designation), boot from it by inserting it, restart and hold the "C" key on an Apple ADB type keyboard (third party brands of keyboards may not boot the CD). If the CD will not boot after one minute, restart and press and hold hold these four keys within two seconds: command (also has the Apple outline logo on it) + option + shift + delete. Hold for at least one minute. Is there any light to the screen? If it is black, and the battery is new, restart holding these four keys: command + option + P + R. Hold the keys while you listen for a repeat of the startup music chime. If you hear no chime, watch for a blink of the screen raster light. Don't hold for more than four repeats. Then release all four keys and hold the "C" key to boot from the CD. If you successfully got the repeats but it still does not boot from the CD, restart holding the command + option + shift + delete keys again.
If you don't have the original 6400 CD, you can try to boot from a retail (has a huge orange "9" on the white label) OS 9 CD. If you have an OS 9 CD that came with a new computer, it will not have the orange 9. Get a retail CD.

Performa 6400/180 keyboard
I have a Performa 6400/180 that still works. My Wife who uses an Indigo iMac andwould like to use the keyboard that came with the Performa on her iMac. Will it work? I know the Performa keyboard conects to the computer via a 4 pin serial connector , I think and the iMac only has USB ports. Is there an adapter that converts the 4 pin serial to USB?
Use a component such as this one.

Performa 6400/180 been hacked
Hi,
Long story short, my performa has been hacked, and I can't do much now. Floppy disk: When inserted, it asks to initialize, then after done, it says " Cannot initialize, Disk is defective!"
It will read cdroms fine, but I don't know if I can use a 7.5 iso to boot from, or if it will let me boot from floppy at startup.
I was thinking of putting a whole new hard drive in, and trying to boot off floppy/cd, but having a hard time finding a 7.5 iso, and don't know what to do.
Thanks,
Abdul.
PowerPC Performa 6400 Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier spare pc hdd, old mac keyboard+mouse,>"my performa has been hacked"That is unlikely, but I would be willing to believe it is not working well. Have you run Disk First Aid? What version of Mac OS is it running now?
>"Floppy disk: When inserted, it asks to initialize, then after done, it says " Cannot initialize, Disk is defective!"That is normal behavior for a drive that is very dusty, or has dirty heads.
There is also a known problem with more advanced Mac OS and certain models of floppy drives. A different floppy drive is sometimes needed to use Mac OS 9. This article has details:
http://www.zone6400.com/OS9.html#OS9_floppyissue
>"It will read cdroms fine, but I don't know if I can use a 7.5 iso"You need either a System/Install CD for exactly your Mac, or a "Full Retail" CD (for any Mac). Mac System CDs were never issued in ISO format, always in Mac format.
Your Mac was released with 7.5.3 and an enabler, so it can theoretically boot from any diskettes or "Full Retail" CDs after that.
>"I was thinking of putting a whole new hard drive in, and trying to boot off floppy/cd, but having a hard time finding a 7.5 iso, and don't know what to do."
You need to work on one problem at a time. Making multiple changes at once will guarantee that your Mac will never work again.
A known problem with these older Macs is the PRAM battery wearing out. If you have not changed it in the last few years, you should consider doing that first. These use a 4.5 Volt sealed Alkaline Ray-O-Vac 840, 841, 0r 842 or equivalent. It is a black cube shape about 1 inch (25 mm) on a side. -
Wiring a Performa 6400/180 to a internet router
I only recently got into working with the hardware aspect of computers. Until i could custom build PCs.
But now I'm looking into putting some use to three 6400 Performas and a lightning struck Bondi blue Imac that have been in my basement for years.
I have already taken a stick of ram out of one of the Performas to put in the one im working on now till I can purchase a nicer ram upgrade for it. However right now my problem is wiring this Performa into the internet router at my house.
This would be my first time doing anything close to networking so I need some help choicing a PCI or Comm card to purchase for the Performa and then I would need to know what to do after I have installed the card into it.Add a comm slot II Ethernet card such as one of these:
eBay search: (Twisted,"RJ45","RJ-45",Ethernet) (Comm,CSII,CS2)
This leaves your PCI slot free for other options such as a USB card.
The best way to ensure that the required software is installed is to install the card first and then Re-install the Mac OS. It sounds onerous, but only takes a few minutes -- your Mac checks to see which components are already in place and adds any that are missing or damaged.
Configuring:
If you have a Router under your control, use the TCP/IP Control panel to Connect using Ethernet and DHCP and the rest can be left blank. If it will not let you select Ethernet, be sure you are connected to a live source (like a port on a Hub, Switch, or Router, and then Restart. Be sure to close the TCP/IP Control Panel window and Save Changes, or the changes will not take effect. Then do something that forces Internet access:
• Open a Browser window and enter a URL
• Set the Time using a Network Time Server
• Request automatic Software Update
If all behaves correctly, you are done. Otherwise, open the TCP/IP Control panel and examine the info provided for clues about how far you got. -
THE OTHER PROBLEMS PRIOR TO THIS ARE
1. KEEPS LOCKING UP WHEN ON CERTAIN WEBSITES (YOU TUBE)
2.VERY SLOW PERFORMING TASKS
I PURCHASED THIS PRODUCT FOR MY SONS THEY LOVE THE IMAC IN REGARDS TO SOFTWARE eg (IMOVIE ) BUT AS FAR AS
THE PERFORMANCE THEY ARE NOT HAPPY........IN THIS DAY AND AGE YOU JUST WANT A RELIABLE MACHINE THAT PERFORMS.
AND FOR JUST UNDER 2K$ AUSTRALIAN YOUR NOT GETTING THAT.The guys at the Genius Bar actually are Geniuses! They told me that in fact my iMac was one of the first generation and the main board had fried to they way the fan cooled it off. They said the problem was fixed with the second generation iMacs.
They took the computer in, i was 1 month away from the 3 year warranty date, and they are replacing the board and the DVD drive that is not working at no charge!
i'll have it back in 5 days.

Computer will not boot up after recent software install
I recently tried to install a series of software updates. Not all were successful. Soon therafter the computer froze up while in safari. I turned it off and the computer would not boot up on restart, and instead sent me to the darwin login screen. I rebooted in safe mode per these forums, and turned off an itunes startup function, and then rebooted. That seemed to do the trick as I could now get back into the OS, but the computer was dreadfully slow. It froze up again in Safari and I turned it off again, and this time it would not go past the grey startup screen with the apple. I tried safe mode again, but the computer would shut down around 30 seconds after the wheel below the grey apple started turning. I Was able to get my Tiger Install DVD in the drive, and turned the computer back on, but now just get the grey apple screen and the wheel spinning indefinitely. I cannot do an erase and install because my photos are not backed up. Please help!
ThanksHi, Deaton41. Welcome to the Discussions.
You wrote: "I recently tried to install a series of software updates. Not all were successful."I suspect the only way you are going to resolve this is by performing an Archive and Install. For important tips on this process, see my "General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the specified order. If you follow my FAQ's steps to the letter, then your photos should be AOK, assuming directory corruption hasn't damaged them. I suspect directory corruption is the root cause of the unsuccessful software updates, which that then led to your current problem re: start up.
Before installing future software updates, you may wish to consider the advice in my "Installing Software Updates" FAQ. Taking the steps therein before installing an update often helps avert problems and gives you a fallback position in case trouble arises.
Good luck!

Not booting from 10.4.8 volumes after upgrade from 10.4.7
I'm sorry to report that my aged G4 450 MHz AGP with 4 internal Hard disk drives no longer boots from any of the 2 volumes upgraded to Mac OS X 10.4.8 as soon as it was started from another volume!
All was working fine as long as 10.4.7 was installed on the 2 232 GB disks connected to the SIIG ATA133 controller. I could boot from any OS on any of the 4 disks, 5 partitions:
internal ATA66 bus:
18 GB disk, 2 partitions: 'IBM_18GB' with OS 9.2.2 and TechTool Pro's 'eDrive' with 10.4.7
71 GB disk, 1 partition 'IBM_71GB' with OS 9.2.2
PCI SIIG ATA133 controller:
232 GB disk, one partition 'I1232GB' with 10.4.7, now upgraded to 10.4.8 and no longer bootable
232 GB disk, one partition 'I2232GB' with 10.4.7, now upgraded to 10.4.8 and no longer bootable
Now I can only boot from the Mac OS 9.2.2 or the eDrive 10.4.7 partitions.
What I did so far: 'I2232GB' was my main OS X startup volume, 'I1232GB' contains a clone of it, plus additional folders like software base and backups.
After upgrading 'I2232GB' to Mac OS X 10.4.8 through Software Update and repairing permissions all was OK as long as the Mac was just shut down or re-started: it always booted up in Mac OS X 10.4.8 from 'I2232GB' without any problems.
The next day I booted from 'I1232GB' to do the same there.
Afterwards I could no longer boot in Mac OS X 10.4.8 from 'I2232GB' nor in in Mac OS X 10.4.8 from 'I1232GB': it just gets to the grey screen with the Apple logo, but the round circle underneath indicating some progress never appears. I left it there for hours: it just hangs.
With the Option key held at startup I could boot from the other partitions with Mac OS 9.2.2 or the eDrive with 10.4.7. None of their Startup Control Panels was able to get me back to 10.2.8!
So I booted from the TechTool Pro 4.5.1 DVD to Optimize both volumes, 'I1232GB' & 'I2232GB', always Files only.
Then I booted from the DiskWorrior 3.0.3 CD to rebuild the directories of both volumes, 'I1232GB' & 'I2232GB'.
Still I can not boot from either 'I1232GB' or 'I2232GB' in Mac OS X 10.2.8!
Downloaded the Mac OS X 10.2.8 Compo Update (for PPC) and installed it onto both 'I1232GB' & 'I2232GB' while booted from the eDrive which I keep on Mac OS X 10.4.7 - no luck either, still I can not boot from either 'I1232GB' or 'I2232GB' in Mac OS X 10.2.8!
Then I backed up the users folder from 'I2232GB' onto 'I1232GB', booted from Mac OS 9.2.2 and used Intech's Hard Disk Speedtools 3.6 to format 'I2232GB', afterwards initialized it with Alsoft's Plus Maximizer Extension for a Block Size of 512 Bytes.
Installed Mac OS X 10.4 from DVD, as well as iLive '06 and upgraded everything to the latest releases with Software Update. All was working fine with all the required reboots until another startup volume was chosen: afterwards again I can no longer boot back into Mac OS X 10.2.8 on the fresch installed 'I2232GB'!
Any help would be appreciated.

I found several typos in above post, wherever it was 10.2.8 it should have read 10.4.8 - I'm very sorry for confusing you, this would not have made sense, but I found no way to edit the existing text therefore I modified the quote of it here.
I do not need Mac OS X 10.2.8 back, but it would be nice to boot back in Mac OS X 10.4.8 from another volume as the current one - which was working fine before with Mac OS X 10.4.7.
Many thanks,

Tecra A11-11N does not boot after CPU upgrade
Hi,
I would like to do a processor upgrade for my Tecra A11 11N from the i5-430M to a probably much faster i5.I thought the i5-580M would do, but the laptop did not boot when i installed this processor.
I reverted back to the 430M, did some research on the internet and found out that the 580M has a very high FSB speed and that is what probably made it not to work/incompatible with my machine.
http://ark.intel.com/products/43537/
http://ark.intel.com/products/49653
http://ark.intel.com/products/49652
and also at http://ark.intel.com/
Now i went back to the computer shop, returned the 580M and got an i5-560M as i compared it's specs and saw it would be compatible as it has the same FSB speed with the 430M.
I then later on in the day tried to install this cpu as an upgrade BUT alas!
It STILL WON'T BOOT ALSO.
I was left dumfounded.Processors in the same familly line are supposed to be compatible with one another provided:Lithography, FSB and socket type are similar.
Or what am i missing here?
I have done processor upgrades in many instances for both desktops and laptops and this is the first one that has left me with no words to say!
please offer some help/advice.
Simon
+Message was edited+I solved this processor upgrade problem on my own.
I did some little research on what limits processor upgradability on computers and i
found out that BIOS was one of the factors that play a key part.
So,i went on a mission
to see if i could upgrade my BIOS and whether it would solve my problem.
I found this link to be very informative:
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=66624
I then downloaded the latest BIOS version for my laptop from this link:
http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_bios.jsp
The following link gave me proof that the BIOS update would not bring any problems to my
machine and that there is already someone who had done it and not encountered any problems.
http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=62459
Just to make sure that you are on the safe side, before carrying out the procedure to update
your BIOS,make sure you have a fully charged battery in addition to the AC plugged in.A power
outtage during this procedure would instantly kill your machine.
The BIOS installation took less than 3 mins.I copied the executable on the desktop and run it
from there.
On rebooting, the new BIOS was installed. The new BIOS version was 3.40 dated on 05/18/2012 while
the older one was version 2.0 dated on 04/03/2010.
From Intel's website,the i5-430M was released on Q1 2010 while the i5-560M and i5-580M were
released on Q3 2010.
It is pretty obvious that by the time BIOS version 2.0 was release, these two newer processors
had not been released and that explains why they were not being recognized when i installed them.
I finally swapped the 430M with the 560M,assembled back the machine and powered it.
Voil!,the machine booted to it's new life.Everything is as was before!
So far i have not seen any problems even to do with overheating or the cooling fan spinning any
faster that before. It is all the same as before. There is considerable performance gain with the
uprade.I am a software developer and my various development enviroments including compilers,
debuggers, database and deployment servers have all been running way way faster than they were!
I believe the 580M can also work but unfortunately i had returned it back to the shop.
There is no reason for buying new machines when we can upgrade the ones we have. What will
happen to the older ones? This means more electronic waste and so does new machines.Let us try
to make better use of the ones we have a in turn,SAVE OUR ONLY PLANET EARTH FROM GLOBAL WARMING! -

Problem:
After being shut off for more than 2 hours my computer will not boot up on the 1st try. It goes to a message that says"Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key". I shut it down using the power button, wait for the hard drives to stop spinning, and then hit the power again and it starts up just fine. It will restart just fine also as many time as I want to restart it, after it has been running in windows. Once it is running, it runs terrific, no problems at all.
If you go right into the bios after sitting for a while you see this in the boot sequence, notice there is no hard drives(Nvidia Stripe)in the boot sequence.
After shutting it down and starting right back up this is what you see in the boot sequence. This pic is from a different time, thats why the boot sequence is different.
Here is a short youtube video (2:10 sec) made to help show the problem. (I called it a Cold boot Storage problem for another thread) just ignore that.
Things I have done to try to solve the problem:
1. Update the bios
2.I have moved the boot sequence around, Foppy1st, or CD 1st, ect. and even disabled the [USB:HP Photosm] in the boot sequence, Hard Drives are 1st now.
3.Replaced the Mobo Battery thinking that it was not remembering the boot sequence
4.Checked that the Hard Drives are connected to the correct plugs (6-7) on the motherboard, and that the raid connector JP1 was shorted out for Raid 0 and the blue indicator light was flashing.
* Just a note in this area. I did set up the Raid 0 with a tech from MSI because I was having an issue with the initial set up, and I did use the Nvidia raid drivers that came with the motherboard. Pchas01 in another thread thought that this could be part of the issue because it is not necessary to load the drivers when you set up the Motherboard in the Raid mode.
F10 and look in the Raid Array
5. Pulled the jumper off of JP1 and it just went to the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" screen much faster, but would never boot up after 5 tries. Put the jumper back in and started up on the 2nd try like the normal problem.
6.Went into the On-Chip ATA devices in the bios and Changed the Raid Mode to an IDE, I cannot F10 and get into the Raid Array now, but I guess that is normal.
Now this is what my boot sequence currently looks like.
That is the point that I am right now. It runs great, games are awesome on it. Its just does not want to start up on the 1st attempt.
Thanks for any help on this
Chris aka Fritzpeed novice builderThanks for the reply,
I started with the easy fixes first, changed the sata cables, and tried different power supply connectors. Both tests had same results, still boots up on 2nd try. I did not know how soon the problem would re-occur after it has been shut down, my shortest time so far is 25 minutes.

Why only one RAID channel is enabled? Array can't be detected in that way...
Well right now, it is not even set up that way, in my #6 problem solving, it was suggested that I turn the Raid Mode off and try [IDE] to see if that made a difference,"because I don't need Raid enabled for the hardware raid". It did not, it only booted to the "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key" window about 60 seconds faster. It is currently set up in this way.
This is how it looks in my On-Chip ATA Devices
How do I check this?

Does the problem persist when you use Silicon RAID instead Nvidia RAID?
I am still working on getting the seagate diagnostics to work, I am getting an error message before I can even test them.
I do have another question. Why is my HP Printer showing up in the Hard drive test, and also why is it showing up in my boot sequence, is this normal?
And speaking of boot sequences I got in there again just now and saw 2 [USB:HP Photosm]
Thanks again, still working on testing hard drives.

Complicated problem: Laggy Macbook Pro, now not booting
I am facing a very complicated issue with my unibody Early 2011 15" Macbook Pro (2.2 ghz core i7, 4gb 1333mhz ram, amd radeon 6750m, if you need hardware details).
I guess the issue started after my computer started to get laggy for no reason at all: it was never the GUI that lagged, but whenever I would perform some data-dependent tasks such as playing a video, or trying to open a big file. This lagging did coincide with some of my friends playing around with magnets around my computer (which may have possibly corrupted hard disk data).
After it got laggy, another major problem hit my MacBook, where I plugged in an old, broken USB into one of the ports by accident, and the computer suddenly shut it self off. The computer then seemed to have no power at all, with no response to pressing power button, or the battery indicator button. I feared the worst: that my logic board had been fried, so I immediately took my computer to the Apple Reseller. The technicians there said it was no problem at all, just that my motherboard had shut itself of in order to protect itself from a USB power shortage, and he unplugged and replugged this one small component on the logic board, which I am guessing is the Power Management Unit, and my computer miraculeously started booting.
So then, I get back home, and the laggy problem is still there. I just had to cope with the problem for a few days, until I go back to the Apple Reseller, but then suddenly, after a restart, the computer started not even booting. The grey apple icon would blink, and turn into a circle with a cross icon. Checked online, and this is apparently related to corrupted system files. This is where I began to suspect that the USB shut-off from few days ago, did more damage than the technicians thought: maybe related to the hard disk, or RAM.
But then again, it could have just been a coincidental corrupt hard disk from my actions, so I wiped/repartitioned my hard disk, and restored the OS and my files from a TIme Machine Backup. Again, the problem was still there, so I thought it might be to do with my backed up system files, so I did a fresh install of Lion.
The fresh install of Lion seemed to eliminate all lagging problems, but after I started copying my files and installing applications from Time Machine, the lagging problem gradually returned. So another question arose, was it a faulty hard disk, or a corrupt file or application that was making it laggy? To check if it was my hard disk, I did a zero-over erase of the entire disk with Disk Utility, and sure enough, the writing process failed in the middle.
After thinking I zeroed in on the problem, I replaced the hard disk in my Macbook Pro with another 750gb Toshiba SATA drive, and did a clean install of Lion. Once again, the laggy problem was gone, but just like the old hard disk, the laggy problem returned after I started copying files over and installing applications. Switching applications would take forever, and accessing folders on my hard disk would also be laggy. Playing videos was impossible, but the GUI (dock, spaces, etc) were all very responsive.
Now, I thought the problem is either with faulty RAM, or my hard disk reader is broken (since two hard disks, although the original one was faulty, both failed). I read online that the Apple Hardware Test (AHT) can help identify and pinpoint hardware problems, so I inserted the 2nd disk that came with my computer (Applications Install), and pressed D, but then nothing came up. After countless attempts, I maybe thought it was the wrong disk, so I inserted the 1st disk (OS Installer), and held D while booting, but still, AHT would not load.
After countless attempts at loading AHT, all of which led to me forcing shut down/holding power button after seeing the Apple logo, brings the problem to where I am at now: my Macbook does not boot into the login screen. After the Apple logo, and the spinner wheel have appeared, the screen turns white and the display becomes an infinite loop of switching from a gray color, to a white color.
This problem is frustrating me very much, because there are so many possible causes, and the problem persists even after reinstalling the OS, and even replacing the ard drive. The logic board shutoff could be the cause, but then again, the lagging problem started way before it happened. Somebody please tell me what is the problem, and what I should do? Thanks in advance.novaria wrote:
Didn't know my magnets were strong enough to corrupt hard disks.
Yes, it's a method used to destroy data on a hard drive as it's recorded using magnetic fields, either "on" or "off" to represent the 1's and 0's that make up the basic building blocks of your data.
But, the magnet does not explain why the hard disk reported an error when being erased with zero-over option.
When the driver software has a problem reading the data on the drive, it assumes it's a bad sector, then maps it off and uses a spare. You likely ran out of spares.
I just tried zero-over erasing the second, good hard disk that replaced the original, but again, it fails. Is this a common problem with the zero erase option?
No.
or is it something to do with my hard disks, or some sort of damaged hardware in my computer?
Well this is drive #2 and it's new, and you get the same problem.
It's either something your doing, (like moving the hard drive/ computer while it's operating thus the heads are striking the platters) or it's a hardware defect, or perhaps the magnets did other damage we can't see, perhaps it's magnatized the computer and that's affecting the hard drive or electronics.
May be a loose or defective cable.
It's time for a hardware evaluation at this point. -
Intel iMac will not boot past gray screen
Intel iMac will not boot past gray screen
my system:
new (month old) 24" intel imac, 2.8 ghz, 4 gb ram.
running: leopard (upgraded from tiger, which was pre-installed at purchase), installed 10.5.1 update right before this huge problem occurred.
install discs on-hand: two-disc tiget set, single leopard upgrade disc.
what led to this:
i wanted to install windows using bootcamp on a 50 gb partition.
at this point i was running leopard 10.5
i followed all bootcamp instructions, printing out the guide, as well. once i got into the windows setup, i was prompted to choose a partition to install windows. unlike the bootcamp guide, which showed three partitions, one clearly labeled "bootcamp", i saw only one partition. not wanting to risk writing over my mac partition, i quit the setup and rebooted the mac os. after some googling around, i looked for firmware updates (didn't need any), and then software updates. i decided to try updating to 10.5.1.
i then ran through boot camp again, deleting my previous windows partition, creating a new one, and moving forward as before. once again, i was only shown one partition to choose from in the windows setup. i exited the setup again to reboot through the mac os, but this time, i was only given a blank gray screen.
here's what i have tried so far:
booting from a CD, holding down the C or D keys: no response (in fact, i have to restart the computer holding down the mouse button to be able to eject the CD)
booting with option key held down: gray screen
booting with option key held down with external bootable firewire drive attached: the firewire drive appears as a boot icon, and i can click on it within a five second window, but then the screen freezes after that time period, and nothing changes
booting into target mode while attached to another mac: gray screen (no firewire icon, and drive never shows up on other mac)
resetting NVRAM: i'm able to hear the boot chimes, but no difference in performance. gray screen every time
Safe boot: nothing but a gray screen
Verbose mode: gray screen
Single user mode: gray screen
Single user mode with firewire drive attached: occasionally (not every time), i am able to get the white on black terminal to show up. from here, i'm able to run fsck, but it appears to only be checking the firewire drive. i have tried several times to boot from here, and once it took me to a blue screen with movable arrow cursor, but it never went beyond this.
is there anything else left to try before taking it to apple?
any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
Casey Burns

http://CaseyBurns.comI'd call Apple support at this point. You'll need
to put this issue on the record.
Call U.S. iPod and Mac technical support: 1-800-APL-CARE (1-800-275-2273)
The wait may be long for an agent to come on the line
so expect that and have some other stuff to do in the meantime.
If you have the applecare protection plan, I'd ask about "onsite"
service.
I like your work ! Good luck !

I have an iphone 4 and it will not boot. I've done everything except downgrade the firmware to 6.1.3 or 6.1.4... is this what needs to happen and if so can I please get a link to do so? thanks
Hi JACOBfromINSIDEaLION,
If you are unable to get your iPhone to restore, you will want to perform a restore from recovery mode, as explained in the following article:
If you can't update or restore your iOS device

Hard drive detected but will not boot Windows Vista or recovery disk
Hi,
I have a very similar issue with a HP Pavillion a6355.uk, the hard drive kept crshing windows and then it finally just kept getting pass the HP boot menu options, and then all I get is the DOS "@press ctrl+alt+del to restart".
The hard drive is detected and passes all the tests, after pressing F9, going into the F10 options. F11 does not do anything, so cannot recover windows/the system.
I have tried changing the SATA connections on the motherboard, no difference. I tried the recovery boot disk I created when it was working and it will not boot with the old or new hard drive I bought to replace it (same size and compatable).
I cannot find where to partition the new hard drive or format the c: on the old one (it had D: for the recovery, but as it won't boot, cannot access this).
I have also tried the HP website to dowload the drivers for the new one, but the page does not load up to show any drivers or Windows to download.
http://support.hp.com/gb-en/product/HP-Pavilion-a6300-Desktop-PC-series/3644673/model/3671505/driver...
The next page just keeps looping or not proceeding when I put in details.
I can’t find anywhere to get hold of my copy of windows vista for this PC or get a disk to re-install on a new drive or fix the old detected drive, can someone please help!!Just what size HD and is the drive Sata II or Sata III?
Vista 32bit .iso You must have a valid installation key, which should be on the COA sticker on the computer, to activate the installation once it completes. ImageBurn to create the .iso disk. Driver page Vista (not 64 bit)

Satellite L745D-S4214 Does not boot; HDD recovery partition not working
I tried to apply the recent windows 7 updates and my laptop no longer boots. I tried to press F12 and select the HDD Recovery partition, but it does not boot regardless. There is a message that it does not communicate to a specific device. I believe the address called out was 0xc0000e9, but I am going by memory. I never created a recovery CD because I thought I was covered by the HDD partitions. This was purchased on 10/26/2012, so it should still be under warranty.
PLEASE HELP!Hi I'm going to assume that your recovery works like mine and that the recovery partition is still good and not corrupted.
Shut down your PC. Press F12 and select HDD recovery. Click enter. This should start the recovery from the hidden recovery partition.
PS I would advise you to make the recovery discs or USB recovery Try this first.
Perform a power cycle
Even when your laptop is off and unplugged, residual power can still be held in some components. While this is normal, clearing it can help with boot problems. Perform these steps to complete what’s called a power cycle.
Ensure the laptop is turned off.
Unplug the laptop's AC power cable.
Remove the battery (if the model has a removable battery).
Unplug all wires or peripherals. This includes CDs, DVDs, USB sticks, mice, printers, and any other accessories.
Hold down the power button for thirty seconds.
Reattach the battery.
Connect the AC adaptor to the power socket that was confirmed to be working in the first step.
Connect the other end of the AC adaptor to your computer.
Try starting the computer.
If your laptop starts normally now, you're done!
