Performance and Resolution of AVCHD on hex core PC

If you can help with an unrelated issue, since Adobe 'Contact Us' notes that I should try the Forum because of a lengthy backup:
I have a login problem on my hex core that was not used to download Production Premium CS6.  I use my quad core backup PC for emails and downloaded the program to it because the hex core, dedicated to editing and rendering, was unable to login to download CS6 for some reason.  After downloading to the quad core, I transferred the CS6 executable and associated software to the hex core.  The hex core is now running PP CS6 but is still not able to login to the forum so I am using my quad core for this.  Can the hex core login problem be fixed?
Back to AVCHD:
After reading PP CS6 problems in the forum with playback on the time line dated back to 2012 I note I have a similar problem with my recent purchase of CS6 but so far only in one spot.  The play during a 1 hour 45 minute sequence of 544 AVCHD MTS clips on my hex core PC with SSD and 2 RAID drives starts OK but the program sequence window freezes after several clips in this one location even though the timeline pointer continues.  The color of the line above the timeline is mostly yellow with small bits of red above the short Transition fades.  Green as I understand would be better since this indicates that the program usually has little problem playing the source footage.  That said, I am pleased that the transitions were added automatically since I spent more time in CS5 adding them than I would removing a few I would not want.
I selected the highest PS resolution for my Sony NEX-VG30 with the idea that I can always resolve down but not up.
The AVCHD properties I have imported into PP CS6 and transferred to the timeline with 'Automate to Sequence' from an MTS clip is as follows:
File Path: \\JCRVIDEOSUPPORT\Users\Public\Videos\12-3-2013\20131203163438.MTS
Type: MPEG Movie
File Size: 20.6 MB
Image Size: 1920 x 1080
Pixel Depth: 32
Frame Rate: 59.94
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - compressed - 6 channels
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - 6 channels
Total Duration: 00:00:06:29
Average Data Rate: 3.2 MB / second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.0
Before I waste my time with editing and rendering, am I on the right track if Blu-ray and DVD discs are my main products?

CS6.0.3 and earlier has a problem with spanned AVCHD media. Update to 6.0.5 to fix the problem. Update from the premiere help menu.
Yellow is correct for many types of video media. Its only red that needs rendering and it turns green to indicate the media has been rendered.

  • Quad core or Hex core for Premiere pro

I am about to take the plunge and upgrade my aging edit PC
Having read some very useful posts on what to get at various budgets but I am still left with a few questions.
I edit mainly AVCHD footage on CS5 and compress to h264 for vimeo or intanet, I have a GoPro 3 but this is rearly used for anything serious but I do intend to upgrade to CS6 in the future.
Do I need a hexcore if I am not burning Blu-ray discs and am unlikely to edit 4k in the near future?
If I buy a quad core machine will I have a dramatic increase in rendering and compression time over the hex core?
The quad core will save more than the cost of a Matrox MXO2 Mini MAX if I do need h264 accelaration but this may still not be as fast, has anyone had experience of the Matrox compared to a hex core machine?
The specs only give a guide and practical experience available on this forum seems the best advice.
I look forward to your replies
    Aidan

    Aidan,
I'd say it depends on your price point. Premiere Pro gets great performance by taxing much of a system including cpu, gpu, drives, bus (motherboard), and memory.
If you are wanting to build a desktop system yourself for under $1700, then I'd say Z77 4-core would be excellent. You can edit AVCHD for sure, but you would be more limited for complex projects.
If you are willing to spend more, the x79 chipset and i7-3930k 6-core is an excellent way to go.
Search around this site for awhile and you will find various build lists with lots of passionate comments on component selection for a wide variety of price points.

  • Hex core efficiency in Bridge CS5 and Camera Raw 6.0

Conclusion: Batch processing of files in Bridge CS5/Camera Raw 6.0 is limited by an unknown factor which I currently believe to be software design and/or software implementation.  While performance on a dual core would be more or less CPU bound, and on a quad core would use the bulk of the available CPU power most of the time, on a hex core machine the CPU is woefully underutilized; i.e. I could be doing the same work in substantially less time.
Suggestion: At the very minimum, allow the option to have Bridge/Camera Raw process N (where we choose N, given that a dual socket motherboard will be able to have 24 cores in the very near future) files simultaneously, so we can tune our own systems for the disk IO vs CPU bottlenecks we each have.  At best, automatically keep the CPU(s) running all cores at or near peak all the time, or until you run out of disk IO bandwidth.
Observations taken with the Windows 7 Resource Monitor and the SirReal G15 keyboard applet
    Camera Raw Batch actions:
When I select a number of photographs (I typically select scores to hundreds), either fresh RAW files from a Canon 50D or existing DNG's converted with prior versions of Photoshop, and apply some change to all of them (for instance: changing from the 2003 Process with ACR 4.6 camera profile to the 2010 Process with the Camera Neutral camera profile, I see very tiny sections of disk IO (not exceeding 20MB/s on a high end SSD), no hard faults/s in memory, no real network IO, and CPU follows a very distinct pattern, with about .75 to 2 seconds at each of the following CPU levels, in sequence:
18 (one core plus a bit)
    70-88 (5ish cores)
18-23% (one core plus a bit)
    45-55% (about 3 cores)
    repeat
A very important feature for me, Bridge CS5 Preview Extractions on a new folder show 33-45MB/s of disk activity, and a solid, exact 25% (1.5 cores) of CPU with dips to 19% or so.  This very clearly indicates that the Preview Extraction feature isn't able to use most of the cores in my processor.
Build: a new build computer (Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H rev1.0, BIOS F6) with an AMD Thuban 1090T 3.2Ghz hex core (running 5% above clock, FSB change to 210Mhz from the 200Mhz default, Prime95 stable for days), with 8GB of DDR3 RAM, and all Bridge, Camera Raw, and Photoshop cache and files running on an OCZ Vertex Turbo SSD.  OS is Windows 7 64-bit.  OS level page file is completely disabled.

Is it possible you're overwhelming the main memory bandwidth by the fact that you are working on (multiple) large images?  Multi-core machines can only work on as much data as they can get from/to memory, and what you're doing is kind of flushing data right through the cache.  I'm less familiar with the AMD architecture, but doesn't the concept of 6 cores on one chip mean that they ALL share one main memory buss?  This could be a case where given the task, more cores is not better.
It may also very well be that the entirety of Photoshop, which is at its core a relatively old application (architecture-wise), is not programmed to use multi-threading as well as it might be.  Getting multi-threading to work right in an application is no picnic.  And don't forget, this software is crafted to build and work in two widely different environments (Mac and PC) and so may not be able to use all the fanciest features of any one of those two realms.

The 15" Retina's will have better performance than any 13" Retina. Not only do the 15" machines have dedicated GPU's, but they also have quad-core processors, whereas the 13" Retina's only have dual-core processors.

  • Full backup ( ~ 1 TB ) using external HD - speed USB vs. Firewire vs. eSATA  - what are relative speeds - how to install eSATA on mid-2010 Mac Pro desktop ( dual hex-core processors)_

        Hi All,
I'm trying to resume regular scheduled Full backup ( ~ 1 TB ) of drives using external HD (to allow off-site redundant backup storage) .
What are relative speeds of USB vs. Firewire vs. eSATA ?
I suspect eSATA connection may be considerably faster … how to install eSATA on mid-2010 Mac Pro desktop ( dual hex-core processors)?
( The quicker and easier backup protocol is, the more likely one is to use it to backup on a routine repetitive basis.)
    Thanks

Adding a USB 3.0+eSATA PCIe card, which The hatter mentions, is the best solution that I've found. See http://eshop.macsales.com/item/CalDigit/FASTA6GU3/. The card is not cheap, but the USB 3.0 works flawlessly (which can't be assumed; ask me how I know) and the eSATA connection allows booting from the connected drive. Grant Bennet-Alder's point about HD speed is important to consider; in addition, the size of the individual files being backed up and where on the backup disk they're going will affect overall transfer speed. For example, using the USB 3.0 connection on that CalDigit card going to a Toshiba 3TB external, the transfer rate for a big file (say a virtual machine file) from an internal SSD boot drive was about 145 MB/sec while a bunch of little files might drop to 30 MB/sec and both rates decrease as an inner partition on the external is used. All told, a nearly 700 GB backup took under 1.5 hours. Using a HD as the source added almost an extra hour, though a WD external was used for that. Using a WD green drive plugged into this http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/FWU3ES2HDK/ with an eSATA connection took about 2.5 hours also, but that was bootable whereas the USB 3.0 connection is not.
Another point to consider is that USB 3.0 is ubiquitous on PC's now so there's lots of price competition for externals; not so much for eSATA externals.

  • Performance and Stability Problem with PE9

I just upgraded my computer to a Core i5 with 8G of memory and everything is running much faster.  But my NEW PE9 just run very slow.  Some of the simple tasks take 10-30 second to complete.  Even Windows 7 will often come out to ask if I want to wait for PE9 to wake up or kill the process.  When I want to change the size of a video clip, it just doesn't work at all due to performance.  It will take PE9 20-30 seconds to resize the video clip.  Without some realtime feedback of the size, it is impossible to do the resizing and this is a very fundamental operation.  PE9 often crash or seize up as well, I didn't have any of these problem with PE3.0.  I upgraded to PE9 simply because my PE3.0 for WIndows XP is not comletely compatible with Windows 7 (some of the text displace does not show up).
Do anyone else have issue with performance and stability?

  • Warp Stabilizing and Multiprocessing : Mac OS X 12 Core ?

Has anyone come up with decent performance for warp stabilizing?
The Activity Monitor shows poor performance during the processing.
One Thread ( A Half Core ) is busy .. and 5 other multiprocessing threads are somewhat active.
The other 18 Threads are practically doing nothing.
For such a important and processor intensive effect .. I would have thought of better performance .. especially on my New 12 Core Mac Pro.
    Any tips?
I have tried "After Effect Multiprocessing" and it doesn't seem to do much.

    That is horrible!
The whole reason I bought the fastest machine possible was to render stabilization on hours of video.
    This is a huge disappointment.
I guess I may as well have purchased a single core or dual core processor.
    Fooled.

  • Help!! 3tracks of audio playing and it keeps on given m "core audio

    ola my name is fedro.
i just bought an imac 2.16Gz i run logic pro 7 nothing else.
when i 1st install logic in my "1st imac" the logic crash a lot and the mute tool on the arranje window take about 5sec to mute. also the system performance runs realy high with only 5 audio track playing!! not normal after 300 calls to apple support they told m the mac must had a hardwear problem, after 2 visits to apple enggineers and a replaced the harddrive the mac still run logic very poorly.
They gave a replacement, but it does just the same.
i have only 3tracks of audio playing and it keeps on given m "core audio or hardisk to slow"messages iam shure i have enough memory!?

    i run logic pro 7.2.0(954)imac 2.16Ghz 1Gb ram duo
    core
Well geeze... that shoots my theory all to ****.
they just replace my first imac because of similar
    problems:(((
do u guys get an 5sec delay on the mute tool"in the
arranje window)? when playing back audio??
No! Right now I'm mixing 10, 24-bit tracks from a location recording. Using 5 channel eqs, 2 Sonalksis eqs, 2 Sonalksis compressors and a wizoo convolution reverb (this is on a G4) and everything is pretty much instantaneous, about 45% processor usage.
Your computer is several times more powerful than what I'm using.
    You're using internal audio?
Try updating Logic to the most recent version.
I find it hard to believe it's RAM or Disc related, but maybe so. I don't have any experience setting up the intel machines.
Fedro, are you running a bunch of plugins on the audio tracks? If so what are they.

  • Final Cut Pro performance and license use.

    Hi,
I'm new to this discussion forum and I have a few questions. Hopefully this is the right thread. I was unsure whether I should have broken the questions into two threads. Nevertheless:
    1) I'm planning on getting a MacBook Pro and know that performance wise it is still below a Mac Pro. Does Final Cut Studio 2, and its applications, mainly FCP run fairly well on a MBP?
    2) I also plan to get Final Cut Studio 2. My dad already has a MBP (early 09 one) and I want to run FCS2 on it first before I get my MBP. I know Apple has the EULA where I can only install FCS2 on one desktop and one laptop. If I get my MBP, can I remove FCS2 from my dads laptop and install it again on my new MBP?
I'm just lost regarding MBP's performance and FCS2's installation.
    Thanks a lot.

I used FCP on my macbook pro, I had 4 GB of RAM and intel core duo 2.6, and it was sluggish like crazy, not to mention the render times for effects. If you can, I highly recommend getting a Mac Pro. Whatever you choose to do, you can simply migrate all of your applications with the migration tool and it will install it on your new computer with your already in use serial number, and then you can uninstall it on your current computer.

EXTREMELY SLOW XQUERY PERFORMANCE AND SLOW DOCUMENT INSERTS.
    Resolution History

    ### Complete Problem Description ###
A test file is being used to do inserts into a schemaless XML DB. The file is inserted and then links are made to 4
different collection folders under /public. The inserts are pretty slow (about
15 per second and the file is small)but the xquery doesn't even complete when
there are 500 documents to query against.
The same xquery has been tested on a competitors system and it has lightening fast performance there. I know it
should likewise be fast on Oracle, but I haven't been able to figure out what
is going on except that I suspect somehow a cartesian product is the result of
    the query on Oracle.

These latest Q&As focus on performance and policy, session failover, deployment, and agents, with tips and guidelines for configurations and best practices.

    Hi Steve,
Of the three components relevent in this case :
    1) the core server itself.
    2) the webapplication - also referred to as client resources.
    3) Multiplexors.
The webapplication which gets hosted on the app/web server - contains only static information.
That is, it has the client jars, jnlp's for fetching these, a few jsp and launcher html files for endusers to launch the im client over webstart.
So, this webclient can be moved to any webcontainer of your choice - and has no restrictions or dependencies on anything.
Just install the client resources on any server of your choice (which is accessible by end users) and configure/deploy it to your webserver - it needs no access to the backend in any way at all.
The IM server uses the access manager sdk (amsdk) to talk to access manager - hence, you will need to modify AMConfig.properties appropriately in case you are making the deployment changes after installation and configuration of IM and amsdk on IM server (please refer to IM and AM documentation for more info on how to do this).
Since what you are attempting looks like a AM supported config, you should not have any issues in configuring IM with that for auth and policy enforcement.
The multiplexor is totally oblivious to all this - just needs to be accessible by clients and should be able to talk to server - thats all.
    Hope this helps.
    Regards,
    Mridul

  • Messed up color display and resolution because of mini-DVI to video adapter

Once I connected the mini-DVI to video adapter to the tv and got weird colors on my screen for a while but then it worked out, then after a while I disconnected the cable and turned my computer off. After that, everytime I turned my macbook on, the color is fine for two seconds and then it turns into a weird offset color, really bright colors, kinda sketchy and just a few colors, and a weird resolution and display obviously, but then I just connect my Mini-DVI to video adapter and disconnect it again (quickly) and the color returns to normal. How can I make the normal colors stay and not have to connect the mini-DVI to video adapater everytime I want to see the normal color display and resolution??
    please help!

Open the Universal Access pane of System Preferences, click on Seeing, turn off the White on Black, VoiceOver, and Zoom options, and drag the Contrast slider all the way to the left. If the issue persists, create a new folder on the desktop, drag half of the items from the Library/Preferences/ folder of the item in the Finder's sidebar with the house icon into it, and narrow down the files until you've isolated the one responsible.

    Some Tips -
1)Identify long-running extraction processes on the source system. Extraction processes are performed by several extraction jobs running on the source system. The run-time of these jobs affects the performance. Use transaction code SM37 — Background Processing Job Management — to analyze the run-times of these jobs. If the run-time of data collection jobs lasts for several hours, schedule these jobs to run more frequently. This way, less data is written into update tables for each run and extraction performance increases.
2)Identify high run-times for ABAP code, especially for user exits. The quality of any custom ABAP programs used in data extraction affects the extraction performance. Use transaction code SE30 — ABAP/4 Run-time Analysis — and then run the analysis for the transaction code RSA3 — Extractor Checker. The system then records the activities of the extraction program so you can review them to identify time-consuming activities. Eliminate those long-running activities or substitute them with alternative program logic.
3)Identify expensive SQL statements. If database run-time is high for extraction jobs, use transaction code ST05 — Performance Trace. On this screen, select ALEREMOTE user and then select SQL trace to record the SQL statements. Identify the time-consuming sections from the results. If the data-selection times are high on a particular SQL statement, index the DataSource tables to increase the performance of selection (see no. 6 below). While using ST05, make sure that no other extraction job is running with ALEREMOTE user.
4)Balance loads by distributing processes onto different servers if possible. If your site uses more than one BW application server, distribute the extraction processes to different servers using transaction code SM59 — Maintain RFC Destination. Load balancing is possible only if the extraction program allows the option
5)Set optimum parameters for data-packet size. Packet size affects the number of data requests to the database. Set the data-packet size to optimum values for an efficient data-extraction mechanism. To find the optimum value, start with a packet size in the range of 50,000 to 100,000 and gradually increase it. At some point, you will reach the threshold at which increasing packet size further does not provide any performance increase. To set the packet size, use transaction code SBIW — BW IMG Menu — on the source system. To set the data load parameters for flat-file uploads, use transaction code RSCUSTV6 in BW.
6)Build indexes on DataSource tables based on selection criteria. Indexing DataSource tables improves the extraction performance, because it reduces the read times of those tables.
7)Execute collection jobs in parallel. Like the Business Content extractors, generic extractors have a number of collection jobs to retrieve relevant data from DataSource tables. Scheduling these collection jobs to run in parallel reduces the total extraction time, and they can be scheduled via transaction code SM37 in the source system.
8). Break up your data selections for InfoPackages and schedule the portions to run in parallel. This parallel upload mechanism sends different portions of the data to BW at the same time, and as a result the total upload time is reduced. You can schedule InfoPackages in the Administrator Workbench.
You can upload data from a data target (InfoCube and ODS) to another data target within the BW system. While uploading, you can schedule more than one InfoPackage with different selection options in each one. For example, fiscal year or fiscal year period can be used as selection options. Avoid using parallel uploads for high volumes of data if hardware resources are constrained. Each InfoPacket uses one background process (if scheduled to run in the background) or dialog process (if scheduled to run online) of the application server, and too many processes could overwhelm a slow server.
9). Building secondary indexes on the tables for the selection fields optimizes these tables for reading, reducing extraction time. If your selection fields are not key fields on the table, primary indexes are not much of a help when accessing data. In this case it is better to create secondary indexes with selection fields on the associated table using ABAP Dictionary to improve better selection performance.
10)Analyze upload times to the PSA and identify long-running uploads. When you extract the data using PSA method, data is written into PSA tables in the BW system. If your data is on the order of tens of millions, consider partitioning these PSA tables for better performance, but pay attention to the partition sizes. Partitioning PSA tables improves data-load performance because it's faster to insert data into smaller database tables. Partitioning also provides increased performance for maintenance of PSA tables — for example, you can delete a portion of data faster. You can set the size of each partition in the PSA parameters screen, in transaction code SPRO or RSCUSTV6, so that BW creates a new partition automatically when a threshold value is reached.
11)Debug any routines in the transfer and update rules and eliminate single selects from the routines. Using single selects in custom ABAP routines for selecting data from database tables reduces performance considerably. It is better to use buffers and array operations. When you use buffers or array operations, the system reads data from the database tables and stores it in the memory for manipulation, improving performance. If you do not use buffers or array operations, the whole reading process is performed on the database with many table accesses, and performance deteriorates. Also, extensive use of library transformations in the ABAP code reduces performance; since these transformations are not compiled in advance, they are carried out during run-time.
12)Before uploading a high volume of transaction data into InfoCubes, activate the number-range buffer for dimension IDs. The number-range buffer is a parameter that identifies the number of sequential dimension IDs stored in the memory. If you increase the number range before high-volume data upload, you reduce the number of reads from the dimension tables and hence increase the upload performance. Do not forget to set the number-range values back to their original values after the upload. Use transaction code SNRO to maintain the number range buffer values for InfoCubes.
13)Drop the indexes before uploading high-volume data into InfoCubes. Regenerate them after the upload. Indexes on InfoCubes are optimized for reading data from the InfoCubes. If the indexes exist during the upload, BW reads the indexes and tries to insert the records according to the indexes, resulting in poor upload performance. You can automate the dropping and regeneration of the indexes through InfoPackage scheduling. You can drop indexes in the Manage InfoCube screen in the Administrator Workbench.
14)IDoc (intermediate document) archiving improves the extraction and loading performance and can be applied on both BW and R/3 systems. In addition to IDoc archiving, data archiving is available for InfoCubes and ODS objects.
