Performance Degradtion on PowerBook G4-133 (1.2G RAM Tiger)

It just runs slower, and slower until I finally have to reboot - Maybe Memory Leaks?
I have recently tried to breathe some new life into my somewhat neglected
PB-G4 133 by giving it an additional 1G of RAM, and a new 120G Hitachi HD.
I'm using Tiger since it came pre-installed on the Hitachi when I had that drive
installed, but previously the G4 had Panther. I also have Ubuntu Linux 8.05 installed on a external 250G FireLite. Ubuntu seems to run faster than Tiger,
but it runs hot and the fan goes full blast so I am a little worried about overheating and limit the uptime. This is a nice compact combination to take
on the road. The performance is OK when I first boot up, but as I fire up
more applications (iPhoto, LightRoom, Camino, Adium) the slower things get. Shutting down applications brings a marginal improvement in overall speed and responsiveness of the desktop. I have come into the Apple fold from the Linux world so I'm using tools like vm_stat, top, and iostat, whose cousins exist in linux, to track things down.
I also have an iBook G4 (1G RAM) which runs Open SUSE 10. This machine can run
for 6 months or more at a time with no performance degradation. My first generation MacBook (1G RAM and Tiger) runs faster than the PB, but it's just enough heavier that it usually gets left at home in favor or the smaller PowerBook.
I'm wondering if my PowerBook apps have some memory leaks that eat up the
free memory, never to be released ? Or maybe there is something that I'm overlooking?
Thanks in advance for reading this long post and for any ideas you folks may have.

Welcome back to Apple Discussions!
If this is a 15" or 17" Powerbook, it might need its clock battery replaced.
If this is a 12" Powerbook it might need its power manager reset.
If the clock battery has been replaced in the last 4 years, then its PRAM might need resetting.
Note, the overheating you might be experiencing while running Linux might be damaging some chips, and/or causing the Energy Saver settings to force the processor to go at a lower speed to keep the processor cool. In Mac OS X that's Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver.
In Linux, I don't know what that would be, but pmset is the command used for it in Mac OS X's command line.
Camino and Adium depend on internet speeds. Try using OpenDNS for your DNS numbers. I find that's usually faster than using the internet service provider supplied DNSes. Changing the MTU in your network settings can also speed your internet, and toggling the IPv6 setting on/off may affect it as well.
If you are using numerous Dashboard widgets, some of them may not be compatible with your version of Mac OS X and those can slow internet speeds down too. iStat Pro has been known to have trouble with that too. If none of those appears to be at issue, are you seeing issues with these titles in WiFi hotspots, or just at home?
iPhoto has improved performance with each new release, and an oversized photo library can slow down earlier versions of iPhoto. I don't know how Lightroom works, but it may be the same issue.
Make sure your hard disk is not in excess of 85% full. This arbitrary number has been found to slow Mac OS X down.
If you still can't explain the slowdown, tell us when you've backed up your data at least twice, and tell us what you've tried so far?

I recently purchased a macintosh powerbook 1400c/133 at a yard sale and was wondering where i could get a 24volt,1.9a adapter to get it started?

    Sandy,
If you enjoy yard sale shopping you should also look for computer recyclers in your area.  The ebay power supply Jeff pointed to is a good price and has free shipping. The free shipping makes it nice because you do not have to leave home to get it.  On the otherhand, recyclers may have other accesories and spare parts all in one location.  They will often match or beat the price of an online source.  Happy hunting.  That is a very capable computer for its day.

  • G4 Powerbook won't boot from OSX Tiger DVD

I am attempting to update my G4 Powerbook from 10.2.8 to Tiger. The Tiger install disc reads just fine when I boot from the HD. I am able to boot from other CD's and DVD's without problem. I have also taken the Tiger disc and successfully booted from it on another Powerbook and also a G4 tower. My Powerbook meets or exceeds all the system requirements stated on the Tiger disc.
The Tiger disc starts the boot process but just spins and spins forever with no error messages. I even allowed it to run overnight, but it was still spinning the next morning.

Hi, docone, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Do you have a retail Tiger installer disc with a black label and a big silver-gray X on it, or is it a gray-label disk that has some particular Mac model named on the label? If it's the latter, you can't use it on your Powerbook: it's specific to the model it was originally shipped with, and doesn't contain support for the Powerbook's particular hardware components. Even if you could start the Powerbook up with it, it would probably refuse to install anything.

  • 1 ghz G4 powerbook with 768 megs of ram, Leopard?

Hi, should I update my 1 ghz G4 powerbook with 768 megs of ram with leopard? will it run faster or slower than the current OS which is 10.4.10.
    Thanks

    Good Afternoon,
I'm afraid that is a question only you can answer based on your need for the new features in OS X 10.5 versus 10.4.10.
Statistically, yes, you can upgrade to Leopard however with that limited amount of memory you may experience a less than ideal user experience from Leopard. If you do consider upgrading to 10.5 you will want to also budget in a RAM upgrade to the maximum supported amount by your Powerbook.
Personally if I was going to spend that much money on an upgrade to 10.5, I'd consider saving my money a bit longer and just replace the equipment with something a bit newer such as one of the new Santa-Rosa MacBooks.
    Just my thoughts! 

  • Powerbook G4 1.67GHz 2GB ram ... HUGE performance issues

    Hardware:
    17" Powerbook G4 1.67GHz with 2GB ram
    System:
    10.5.4 Leopard
*Ever since i upgraded to Leopard, i have noticed tremendous latency / pinwheel issues in many areas such as:*
    1. Switching between running applications hangs up sometimes as long as 15 seconds
    2. Video playback in quicktime is choppy
    3. Various programs take a tremendous amount of time to open
    4. Opening relatively small illustrator and or photoshop files pinwheels for unusually long time
    5. Opening finder windows unusually slow
One of the MOST frustrating of all issues:
    6. Powerbook heats up rather quickly... gets very hot and the fans have NEVER come on... VERY frustrating, since i would have no problem with noise if it meant better performance...
_*Overall, the entire computer feels VERY sluggish*_
i have tried clean installs, as well as regular maintenance... and upgraded my RAM to the max of 2GB
Is there anything else i can do? Anyone else having similar problems and or know the best way to repair?
DESPERATE for a solution here... while i realize the G4 can only handle so much, i just feel like it cant possibly be this slow under leopard... or can it?!
*ANY HELP AT ALL greatly appreciated...*

    Hi,
Just to chime in, I am running a PB G4 1.67, and I am running Leopard (10.5.4) on it just fine. In fact, I am *more than* pleased with the fantastic performance. I am a very very heavy user (enterprise software developer permanently running 101 things simultaneously on his machine) and I have no problems.
First of all, try to figure out what is chomping performance. Is it CPU? Fire up activity monitor, go to the CPU tab, list "all processes" and order by CPU usage. See if a process is swamping your CPU. Until I let it run overnight to index my 250Gb drive, the Spotlight indexing engine (mds) was eating all my CPU. Thereafter, it's fine. Or you can disable it.
So yeah - let's first figure out what is causing your CPU to over-work (and hence, your machine in general to heat up, they do get hot, especially in hot climates) and work from there. No reason to suspect hardware failure yet...

  • Aperture performance on a PowerBook G4?

Wondering what type of performance I could expect from Aperture if I installed it on my PowerBook G4. The system is 1.5GHz with 1 GB. Graphics card is a ATI Mobility Radeon 9700. I'm running OS X 10.4.7.
I've seen posts (a recent one on iBook) where folks are having trouble the software.

iBook commentary does not apply to Powerbooks, especially more modern higher end ones like yours. There is a reason iBooks were so cheap.
My PB G4 is a small bit stronger than yours (1.67 GHz, 128 MB VRAM) and I have always described it as "adequate" to run Aperture. However, I never said it ran Aperture "well." For sure you would need to increase your RAM to at least 1.5 GB, preferably 2 GB.
I recently ordered a MBP, and improving Aperture performance was the sole reason for doing so.

  • "Classic" 9.x on 1 GHz PowerBook G4 running OS 10.4 "Tiger"

Is it possible to install and run the so-called "Classic" 9.x on a PowerBook (1 GHz) which is already running OSX 10.4.3 "Tiger"? Can I do so from an external drive? The PowerBook shipped with the 10.3.9 software, but I did a clean install of the 10.4 version and have kept it updated. I have some programs and files I would like to be able to run and use, but they need the "Classic" OS.
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   1 GHz, 768 MB DDR SDRAM

    Hi, cappie -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
If you mean can it use OS 9 as aboot OS, probably not if it originally shipped with OSX 10.3.x.
This Apple KBase article can help identify which PB G4 1.0GHz model you have (there were several) -
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88248
This Apple KBase article indicates that only the first PB 1.0GHz model can boot to OS 9 -
Article #25114 - Mac OS 8, 9: Compatibility With Macs
The other models can use OS 9, but only in the Classic mode - running as a program while the machine is booted to OSX.
Any can use OS 9 (Classic) from an external firewire drive (and probably from a USB drive, but USB is so slow that doing so is not recommended), including being able to boot to it for the model that is OS 9 bootable.
As far as installing it goes -
If your machine is one of the first PB G4 1.0 GHz models and you want to be able to use OS 9 as a bootable OS, the only source it can be installed from is the original set of disks that came with the machine - it requires a model-specific version of OS 9.2.2.
Otherwise, for use only as Classic, it can be installed from the original set of disks that came with the machine, or copied from another install. In order for it to be used as Classic it must be OS 9.1 or later; OS 9.2.1 and OS 9.2.2 provide better compatibility in that mode.
These Apple KBase articles can help in installing Classic from the original set of disks, as appropriate for your model -

  • Can I upgrade my PowerBook G4 from Mac OS X Tiger to Snow Leopard?

I am running Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11 on my PowerBook G4. Can I upgrade to v10.6 Snow Leopard? Just asking because I never upgraded to v10.5 Leopard. Are there any adverse impacts of doing this for my PowerBook G4?

    Hi jjhron;
As Stedman says you can't go to Snow Leopard with your G4 PowerBook but if your PB meets the specs for Leopard you can upgrade to that instead.

  • Upgrading G4 Powerbook from 10.3.9 to Tiger.

    Hi,
I haven't posted for a while, but I'm looking to upgrade my Powerbook for the last time, from 10.3.9 to Tiger.
I can't afford a new machine at the moment, so I upgraded my HD and Superdrive, to the best spec I could get at the time.
I don't want to go straight to Leopard, as I don't think it would run very well on my old Powerbook (plus I don't want to have to update all my software!), so I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on upgrading to the last version of Tiger (10.4.11)?
The main thing that worries me is the old "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" thing.
I remember the logic board/lower RAM slot problem that seemed to raise it's ugly head some where around the 10.4.4 update. Although there was no particular evidence that it was this particular update that caused the problem on the G4 Power PC Powerbooks,I'm still a bit worried as I'd rather not lose the lower RAM slot, if there is any chance that Tiger might have caused it!
My machine was made in Jan 2004, and aside from a few minor problems, it's been fine. I was wondering if anyone out there with the 1.25Ghz model could give me some idea of their experiences, using Tiger on this particular model?
I like to try and keep up with the technology, and I've heard that upgrading the OS can make the computer seem "snappier" (not so much of the "spinning beachball of death"). Plus, I know I can't use a new ipod with anything less than 10.4.
    Any help, gratefully appreciated. Thanks.

    Thanks eww,
I have Kingston RAM in both slots, 2 512MB chips. I tried cheaper RAM, but the 1.25 machine is extremely "picky" about RAM since my model supports "bus slewing" (which I believe means it cycles between full, and half power when in the "automatic" mode).
I had problems with other RAM, and my machine didn't like having one of the original Hynix 256MB chips, and one of the Kingston ones in the machine at the same time. Since I upgraded to the Kingston PBG433 type of RAM (which I believe Apple often use), I've had no problems.
I assume that Tiger would have no issues with this type of RAM, so I should be OK. Thanks for your advice.

  • How to Format HDD and Install newest OS on a Powerbook G4 Titanium (1Ghz, 512mb Ram)

I have just recently acquired an old Tibook from a friend. The thing is slow and just needs alot of internal work done. Not to mention it's running OS X 10.2 which doesn't allow me to do much.
I have never owned a Macintosh (Apple) in my life so I'm a serious layman when it comes to this albiet I am very litterate with PCs (don't hate).
I would simply like to format the HDD and install a fresh OS because the computer has multiple problems that I have been troubleshooting for hours without any luck. Let me know if and how I can just do an installation over the current OS while wiping all of the old data. I just want a fresh install.
So how do I go about doing this? And whats the newest version of OS X that I can run on this computer? I think this computer is from 2002. If you need more information just let me know!
I'm really excited to learn the other spectrum of computing!

The newest version of Mac OS X that machine can run is Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard. However, with only 512mb of RAM, that OS will run very, very slowly. Even if you install 1gb, which is probably the max for that model (can't tell for sure because I am guessing at the exact model), it will be only marginally usable. My own old G4 PowerBook has 2gb of RAM and it runs Leopard pretty well, but I wouldn't want to use Leopard with less than the 2gb with the 1.25ghz processor in my PowerBook.
I'd recommend installing 10.3 Panther instead of 10.5 Leopard. Panther will run fine with 512mb of RAM and will be very comfortable and speedy if you give it the 1gb upgrade. RAM is very inexpensive right now. Panther also requires less hard drive space, which is a good thing since the hard drive in your machine is probably pretty small. There are lots of good email clients and web browsers to use with Panther in place of Mail and Safari; check out Low End Mac for suggestions and discussions.
Neither Panther nor Leopard are sold by Apple anymore. You can find both at retailers sometimes and frequently on eBay. Leopard tends to be ridiculously expensive, but Panther can often be found for under $40.

  • How is performance on Macbook Pro 15" 2ghz 128mb video ram?

Is anyone running aperture with the 128mb video ram?
Trying to decide if the approx $500 difference between models is really worth it for the ram. I know there's a little more hd space and a tick faster cpu speed but I'm mainly concerned with the ram question.
    Thanks to all,
    Larry

You get 25% more hard drive, 8% faster CPU, double the VRAM for $500 if you are comparing stock systems only. However if you are building to order the price difference will be much less than $500 the way the BTO options price out. And, you should want 2 GB of RAM. To achieve that with the cheaper MBP you either need to throw away the 512 and buy two DIMMs instead of just one or pay Apple $500 instead of the $300 if you had bought the better MBP.
For a MBP with 120 GB hard drive, 2 GB RAM BTO cost is:
2.0 GHz MBP with 128 MB VRAM, $2699
2.16 GHz MBP with 256 MB VRAM, $2899
$200 difference, not $500. Of course buying third party RAM will change it some. Either way I think max HD size and max RAM is important and at less than $300 actual difference I consider the faster box a smarter purchase. Best value of all is the 17" MBP with its 8x DVD and FW800.
Note that Apple and graphics apps clearly are sharing more processing with the GPU as time goes on. IMO it behooves us to get fastest available (at reasonable price) GPUs for the future, not because of any perceived performance difference today.
This thread mirrors comments I made a year+ ago. Look what happened to folks who bought G5s and saved a few bucks because at the time better GPUs BTO mostly affected only video/3D. Then Surprise! Aperture came along and knocked multiprocessor G5s without upgraded cards to their knees. Further surprise, Apple - IMO incredibly and unethically - refused to facilitate card upgrade purchases to folks who had purchased Apple's best Macs, now lamed by an Apple app.
Personally when I buy it is always with fastest available (at reasonable price) GPUs; just trying to get max graphics performance which historically has always been challenging to hardware setups.
IMO it is essential to buy for the future, not for today. Today will be over before a new box is even delivered...
There are many earlier threads that discussed this that you can find by backtracking through the thread list. One is <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=478038&tstart=100>.

  • Powerbook 15" won't restart from Tiger install DVD

    Hi,
I am trying to start up my powerbook from the Tiger install DVD in order to use the repair disk function of Disk Utility on my hard disk. I tried both rebooting while pressing the C key, as well as selecting the DVD from Startup Disk in System Preferences. In both, the outcome is the same:
I get the grey screen with the Apple, then it turns into a blue background on which there is a white window, which shows a very strange graphic. There are two complicated looking components to this graphic. The left one looks like a grey oval shape with complicated looking lines on it, and what looks like two batteries falling out of it. The numeral "1" is under this graphic. The right hand shape is also a grey oval with various lines on it, and contains a blinking red dot. The numeral "2" is under this graphic.
There is a greyed out arrow next to the "2".
At this point, the keyboard or the mouse do not work. There is a spinning circle under the graphic, and it keeps spinning while nothing further happens.
I have no idea what these graphics mean, and google has not revealed anything. Please help!
    Thanks

Update: I have figured out from further googling that the weird graphics are pictures of wireless mice and how to install batteries on them (?!). I have never owned a wireless mouse and certainly one has never been used on this computer. The current system on the powerbook is 10.4.9, and the install DVD for Tiger is 10.4. Is it too old to boot this machine? Is there some other way I can run the disk utility instead?
