Performance issues home sharing with Apple TV2 from Mountain Lion Server

I have a Mac Mini which I have just upgraded to Mountain Lion Server from Snow Leopard Server.
I have noticed that the performance of Streaming a film using Home Sharing to an Apple TV2 has degraded compared to the Snow Leopard setup. In fact the film halts a number of times during play back which is not ideal.
I have tested the network between the 2 devices and cannot find a fault.
Has anyone come across this problem before.
Are there any diagnostic tools I can use to measure the home sharing streaming service to the AppleTV2 device.
Any help much appreciated

Well, I tried a few other things and one worked but again just the first time I tried connecting to the desktop PC with iTunes. I flashed my router with the latest update and the ATV2 could see the iTunes library and I was able to play media. Later in the day I was going to show off to my daughter that I had fixed it and, to my dismay, no go. I tried opening the suggested ports but no luck.
I then tried loading iTunes on a Win7 laptop and it works perfectly with the ATV2. Both the laptop and the ATV2 are connected to the router wirelessly while the Desktop is connected to the router by Ethernet. Not sure if this is part of the issue as it sounds like this didn't work for others. The only other difference between the laptop and desktop is that the desktop has Win7 SP1 loaded while the laptop does not; now I'm scarred to load it though I don't think that's the issue. All in all, a very vexing situation. Hopefully Apple comes up with a solution soon.

  • Home Sharing with Apple TV2 Broken After 4.2 Update

It looks like I have some company with at least similar issues. This is very frustrating and support was no help.
ATV 2 worked just great with Windows 7 64-bit and iTunes library until the 4.2 update was loaded. Now ATV 2 keeps telling me to turn on home sharing on a computer but it's already on and iTunes is running, I'm using iTunes 10.2.1.1 and Apple TV2 with latest update 4.2 (2060) and connection over WIFI. Home Sharing is enabled on my computer and ATV2 using the same Apple ID and password. I can get to YouTube and the iTunes store from my ATV 2 without issue.
I've attempted many solutions from what I could find online but no luck:
    1. Turned off/on home sharing on both the Apple TV 2 and in iTunes (multiple times)
    2. Re-entered my Apple ID and password on both ATV 2 / iTunes
    3. Restarted iTunes and ATV 2
    4. Restarted the DSL modem/router (ZyXEL PK5000z)
    5. Turned the firewall completely off (Norton Internet Security - firewall is off in router)
    6. Restored ATV 2 over WIFI
    7. Reinstalled iTunes
    8. Changed my Apple ID and password then reset in iTunes and ATV 2
    9. Renamed my itunes library
    10. Disabled QoS upstream/downstream protocol in my DSL modem/router
    11. Restored ATV 2 through USB connection in iTunes. This worked for a few minutes but after I turned off ATV 2 and later tried again it was back to it not working...
    Any other ideas?

  • ITunes Home Sharing with Apple TV2, works with one Win 7 PC but not with the other

Hopefully someone out there can help with this, I have gone through all of the troubleshooting procedures that Apple provides, and have spoke to thier 'fast track' technical services department and we cannot resolve this.
My probelm is that Apple TV does not recognize my Win7 PC that has itunes running in Home Sharing mode.  In order to test my router, network configurationand the Apple TV, I put iTunes on a laptop on my network running Win7 as well, and the Apple TV had no problems sharing with that computer.  I have opened all of the ports in my firewall that Apple recommended, and tried to make it work both with and without my anti-virus software, but still no sharing of iTunes with this computer.  We are working with the latest version of iTunes and Apple TV, both updated today.
Has anyone run into this problem?
    Thanks
    S McD

Yep - have had the same problem, especially since IOS5 came about and no solution has worked.  I've fought this one for a while, I come back to it every once in a while when I see something that might be a new tack but no joy.  I've also tried all that stuff, but none of them fix it.
I can tell you a couple of things I have found out along the way:
First off, there is some kind of issue with the Apple Mobile Service that causes it to not stay working.  If you stop the service and start it you may be able to make the sharing show up for a bit, but it will eventually disappear.
Secondly, there may be a network routing factor to this too.  Apple doesn't like to use the same kind of protocols as many sharing schemes do, instead preferring something known as "Bonjour".  Bonjour uses multicast routing, and appears to either be programmed badly or in a non-standard way - or maybe there just is no standard.  In any case what you find is that it just doesn't work, and there is no current fix.
Keep trying though, maybe you can figure it out.  If you do, please come back and post what you did, I'd be very interested.  Sorry I couldn't be more helpful, but I can at least tell you that you're not crazy, there are others out there having the same problem with the same bleak outlook.  By the way, mine used to work until iOS5.

  • Sharing a Calendar from Mountain Lion server with Snow Leopard users on local network

    Hello.
I have a new Mac Mini Server running Mountain Lion Server and I want to create a shared calender for a mix of Lion, Mountain Lion and Snow Leopard users on our local network. Does anyone have any info on how to do this? I have tried using the Server App and Calender Help within the applications, but the content isn't available. I have managed to create a Shared Calender  from the Mini's Calendar App where I've  added users and I can see a 'wireless' transmit icon to the right of the Calendar name - but I cant get any of the users' iCal or Calendar apps to recognise the Calendar on the local network. I've also created a Location in the Server App under Calendar and still can't see anything on the local network. Am I missing something really obvious?
    Thanks in advance!

Sorry, I hadn't explained everything fully. I don't want to open up my VPN to friends and family. I do have the router assigning the NAS a fixed IP, so that when I connect over the VPN I can use the local IP address to connect, as you have mentioned.
What I would like is for my friends or family to connect to my server over AFP or SMB using the public IP of my network, which my router then forwards onto my server, and display the available sharepoints configured using Mountain Lion server. However, the NAS drive is not an available option this way as it has a separate IP to the server.
As the NAS alllows guest access, I also don't want to configure the router to forward a specific port to it, as this way it will be open to the internet. I wanted to try and use my server as an authentication point, with profiles set using Mountain Lion server, and limited to file sharing services only.
    Hope this makes sense.

  • Smooth transition from Mountain Lion Server to Mavericks Server 3.0!!

After an new OS release that are always complaints about installation and configuration problems. First comers to using any new software tool provide valuable feedback we generally hope will help improve the new product. It's how things have worked since the first 6503 Apple II's and 8086 IBM PC's.
I've been using and upgrading PC's since THOSE DINOSAURS! And I can't remember EVER having an OS upgrade go as smoothly as my recent upgrade from Mountain Lion Server (OS X 10.8.5 w. Server 2.2.2) to Mavericks Server 3.0.
I chose to do a clean Mavericks install on a clean partition created on a 1 TB disk that was upgraded into my trusty MacBook. I used the DiskmakerX app to create a Mavericks installation USB drive. When the screen came up with the option to import users, programs & files (took a pass on email) from the Mountain Lion Server partition, I let it run overnight to transpose everything of value into the clean Mavericks installation.
The next morning the only program that wasn't PERFECTLY installed and configured on Mavericks was Server 2.2.2. I deleted it and bought/installed Server 3.0. After Server 3.0's setup ran that only thing I had to do manually was start Postgres! My domain setting, DNS, all my web applications that were set up on Mountain Lion Server were all GOOD TO GO again on Mavericks Server!
I'm disclosing this here, publicly because it was a BIG PAIN to install and deploy all my websites using Mountain Lion's server app. To say the easy transposition into Server 3.0 was an unexpected and pleasant surprise amounts to massive understatement.
Now I'm going to describe two small anomolies I've noticed in either Mavericks or Server 3.0 that other users might want to be on the lookout for. They're not fatal. But they might be "habringers" suggesting underlying problems in either the new OS or the new Server's internals.
The toolbar icon for TimeMachine doesn't "spin" when it backs up. It's not a big deal. But it's convenient to see the circle around the clock whirling so we know when TIme Machine is backing up.
Mavericks Server isn't reporting newly upgraded apps as available under the Updates Tab of the Server's Software Updates subsystem. It might be inconsequential. But with a new OS version it never hurts to let the developers know about the "little things" that don't apparently work.
Kudos to the Maverick's developers for releasing an OS X version that's THIS CLEAN. And hugs to Apple's management for making it a free download upgrade for developers!!!
Full disclosue: I don't now and never have worked for Apple. but I do own a few shares of Apple stock that we purchased many years ago at $14.00 / share. I'm not a big shareholder. But based on my recent seamless upgrades to Mavericks and iIOS 7, I'm a happy one who's not likely to sell any time soon.
If Apple can do for ALL THEIR HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE PRODUCTS what they seem to have done for OS X and iOS, they've got at least a fighting chance to recover from their losses after their stock peaked at about $700.00 /share.
    Keep up the good work!

Does any one know if Adobe has a software download patch to be able to use Photoshop CS Upgrade with a new Apple iMac OSX Mountain Lion please?

I checked and mine is an iMac8,1.
When I tried downloading Yosemite it looked as if it started, but then... nothing... I tried several times, to no avail.
I just called Apple and they said downloading Mountain Lion should work. Ordered online, paid my $21 and am now waiting for the download code.

  • Home Sharing with Apple TV does not work

Home sharing is turned on for both iTunes and Apple TV.  Yet no files are synced to Apple TV from iTunes.  I have tried turning Home Sharing off and on both devices several times. I have also re-installed iTunes.

    If on wifi try ethernet
Go to netstumbler or similar and get a network report, look for signal strength and noise
Make sure port 123 is open on router (refer to manual if unsure)

I've just bought ATV2 and trying to connect to my iTunes library on Win7 PC via home sharing. I can connect fine to the library, but when I play a song on ATV, I get blue screen of death on my PC. Any ideas? I'm running latest version of iTunes on my PC.

  • Home Sharing iTunes 11.1.5/Mountain Lion/iOS 7

Since updating to iTunes 11.1.5 I am unable to see my shared libraries from my iPhone or iPad running iOS7.
When using the previous version of iTunes, the iOS devices were able to see the shared libraries, but had great difficulty connecting consistently.
The iTunes I am trying to share from is running on 10.8.5.
I have another Mac, running Mavericks.  That Mac can see and share the Mountain Lion's library.  The iOS devices can see the music from the Mavericks iTunes (also 11.1.5), but can not play it - each song scrolls by as if it has zero length.
All the devices are on an AirPort Extreme network.  The Mountain Lion Mac is wired and the rest are wireless.  Enabling the wireless network and disabling the wired network on the Mountain Lion Mac doesn't change anything, nor does signing in/out of Apple ID, restarting Music App in iOS devices or many of the other tricks that have been described.
Disabling IPv6 doesn't help, and the AirPort Utility can't see the base station with IPv6 turned off.  It's currently set to local-link only, as that solved othe IPv6 issues.

This may be extremely obvious, but I missed it, despite reading http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2972:
There are two places to enable Home Sharing.
I had it enabled in Preferences > Sharing Preferences
However, I did not have it enabled in File > Home Sharing.  As soon as I turned it on there, it asked for my Apple ID (which was already signed in to the iTunes Store and iMessage and numerous other locations) and then everything worked correctly.
I don't know if this is left over because I have been running iTunes since there was iTunes and have consistently carried over preferences as I upgrade machines.  However, this is a ridiculously awful interface.  I had presumed that I definitely had Home Sharing enabled, as I've clearly checked 'Share my library on my local network'.
Hope this helps someone else who has a similar issue.

  • Home sharing don't work in Mountain Lion update

both Apple TV and Remote fails to load Itunes library arggghh!! everything is set up restarted rebootet and run through several times.
anybody have same issues or hopefully a solution?

    Hi All,
Just did the ML and iTunes update and identified this issue.
The following fixed the issue for me:
Settings / Sharing / File Sharing / Options (button)
---> Enable "Share files and folders using AFP" (wasn't enabled)
---> Enable "Share files and folders using SMB (Windows)" (already enabled in my system)
After enabling AFP sharing, my ATV2 worked perfectly with home sharing from both the native disk/volume and a NAS volume.
    Cheers!

  • Get Airtunes to work with Apple TV and Mountain Lion

    Hi there,
I know there are tons of people complaining that the new Airplay Mirroring doesn't work with their later than mid 2011 Mac running Mountain Lion.  My complaint is I just want to be able to use my apple TV with my Itunes library.  After my upgrade my apple TV2 can't find my Itunes library.  I don't care about the mirroring feature, that's why I bought an AppleTV, but without access to the library I can't play anything.  Is there any way to get just Airtunes to work?  Are there any setup tricks I could do to make it work?  On the ipad and the iphone I see the option to pair my devices with a 4 digit code in itunes but the apple TV only works through my Apple ID.  this seems to make my ipad and iphone not work.
I have a 2010 iMac and a AppleTV2.  I just want to be able to browse my library on my itunes.  Sometimes it will work for short period of time after several resets on both machines but it never lasts.
    Some one please help!

    1. Insure home sharing is turned on both apple tv & the iPad - same account
    2. When playing video or audio look for the little square usually lower left corner press it and select
    Apple tv!
    3. For mirroring double press home button (or multi finger slide up) scroll
All the way to the left & turn on AirPlay and choose mirroring!
