Performance on 1.5GHz PPc G4 & 1.6GHz PPc G5?

Hi,
I have Aperture at home and it runs brilliantly on iMac 2.16GHz with 2.5 gigs of Ram. I am putting forward proposals at work for software and Aperture is high on my list but how will it run on a 17" PB 1.5GHz PPc G4 and 1.6GHz PPc G5. Both only have a 1Gb of Ram so that will defiantly need upgrading, however how much do they hold and what would you recommend?
Thanks
Grant

... in order to make it run the way it's supposed to, you'd probably have to get tons of RAM plus the hottest graphics card available. And I'd say that that isn't sufficient, it will still run comparatively slow.
No, really, to impress someone with Aperture you'd need to showcase it on really hot hardware. Else everyone'll say "Hey, this is a cool program, but we'd need to buy new Macs to be able to actually use it".
Now that just may be what Apple's hoping for...
Cheers,
k.

  • Which Creative Suite will work for a G5 2.5ghz PPC Dual?

I'm using OSX 10.5.8 on a G5 2.5ghz PPC Dual Core Mac that is not intel-based.
I have 4gb of RAM, 500gb HD and I'm mainly interested in using Photoshop & Illustrator but,
all other apps would be welcome. Which Creative Suite can i buy for my Mac?

You can't. The last version of CS that was usable on a non-Intel machine was CS4. With the release of CS5 a year or so ago, Adobe stopped selling CS4. You will be hard pressed to find a legitimate copy of CS4. Sorry, but the sad truth is that you'll need to buy a new computer at this point.

  • Performa 6500 to G4 PPC data transfer help please

I now need to recover some files to my current G4 (Leopard) from my old Performa 6500/225 with ethernet but no monitor, no zip, no printer now and read-only CD. Then I will recycle the tower, kb and mouse.
If the HD is difficult to remove, should I risk having the technicians try to do it (main Apple dealer techs says they won't touch it but another Mac dealer technician says maybe-- but if it's difficult to remove, what's the risk?)
Can I easily use a converter to use my current LCD with the Performa (not sure I can locate an original monitor to use) or what other options?
I see the links on how to set up a network between the macs but is this something a novice can do easily between these systems?
I did keep my classic/OSX option open with my G4 but then upgraded to Leopard so no longer have the classic option.
    Thanks for any advice

You can use almost any monitor with the 6500, if you have a suitable adapter.
Do not let the 15-pin two-row Mac display connector scare you. It uses EXACTLY the same basic signals as the 15-pin 3-row \[aka "VGA"] connector: Red, Green, Blue intensity signals, and Horizontal and vertical Sync signals.
The difference is that the adapter must also supply some ID bits, which the Mac reads at startup to determine what display is attached.
If your existing monitor can do VGA resolutions, adapters to use a PC VGA monitor on a Mac are common. Just look at it carefully, and make sure the Mac-side of the adapter has pins, and the VGA-cable side has holes, and not the reverse.
    RE: networking
If you have Broadband Ethernet access (via DSL or Cable Modem) you have seen the Control Panels/Preferences and used the cables you need to set up a small Ethernet network. It is a little complicated, but not difficult.

  • Is 1.5ghz ppc mini 64 capable

i was woundering if the ppc mini was 64bitcapable since 10.5 is supposed to be 64 bit.

    Hi,
I couldn't find out if your Mini uses a G4 or G5 processor, so for the basics.
    The G4 is a 32-bit processor, whereas the G5 is a 64-bit.
But Leopard will support both 32-bit and 64-bit processor, although with 64-bit processor it might run faster.

  • Looking for Nvidea GeForce 6600 OR Similar Graphics Card for Quad G5 PPC

    Hi there!
Wishing a Happy New Year to yo'all!
Was wondering whether someone might help me out with a minor issue I'm having...
I have recently acquired a Quad 2.5GHz PPC G5 (with PCIe). When I bought it, it came installed with a NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 graphics card, which works just fine. Heard these cards are very good for 3D rendering, etc...
However... As I am an audio engineer, I don't need a flashy graphics card... Instead I need "flashy" sound cards...
I have two PCIe UAD-2 Quad cards for all my UAD plugin needs within Logic Pro... And I have PCIe Symphony X card for my Apogee (AD16X & DA16X) front end sound conversion. All which sound and work very well... So far so good!
But here's the problem... My Quad PPC has 4 PCIe slots, which should be fine for my arrangement i.e. one slot for graphics card, one for PCIe Symphony card, two for UAD-2 Quad cards... BUT the damnable NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 takes up two PCIe slots!!!
I have looked on line to find out what the Quad 2.5GHz G5 PPC was originally supplied with: an Apple OEM Nvidea GeForce 6600. However these are rare and hard to come by now-a-days... And I can't wait forever till one pops up for sale.
So... Can anyone recommend to me a graphics card that will work in the Quad 2.5GHz G5 PPC... AND take up only one PCIe slot and be able to run a 30 inch DVI Apple display i.e. it needs two DVI ports???
I'd even do an out right swap for the NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 and a good condition and working Apple OEM Nvidea GeForce 6600!? Heard this is more than a fair deal...
    Cheers in advance!

    Hi-
You can buy a Geforce 6600LE at We Love Macs. They aren't cheap, though.
This eBay seller has several of the 6600LE cards, at a much better price. The seller is very reliable (from experience) and carries the positive feedback to support my recommendation.
This 7800GT is also a good possibility. It takes only one slot, and provides much better performance than the 6600LE.
This flashed 7800GT is also an option. A flashed card is one that has the PC ROM replaced with Mac ROM. Again, this seller knows his stuff.....
As with the 6600LE, the 7800GT has a dual link DVI to support the 30" ACD.
After you get a replacement card, might try and get a few quid for the FX 4500 on eBay.
An original will sell better than the flashed models that are selling there.

  • MBP 2.5 and 2.6, two questions

I am about to buy a MBP, and have been looking at the specs, and I am a little confused.
The two standard retinas are 2.5Ghz i5 and 2.6GHz i5.
As discussed in other questions on this forum the processor seems to be almost the same.
They start with 128 and 256GB SSD-disks, so there is an explanation of the different pricing.
    Question 1:
    * If I start with the cheaper one and upgrade it to 2.9GHz i7 processor AND upgrade it to 256GB SSD, the price comes to $1,899.
    * If I start with the more expensive one and upgrade it to 3.0GHz i7 processor the price comes to $1,899.
After this selection of upgrades we have two almost identical computers. Both have 256GB SSD. Both have an i7 processor, but with a 0.1 difference in clock/frequency/speed-thing.
Am I missing something or am I correct in assuming that if I wish to have at least 256GB SSD there is no point in starting with the cheaper option and upgrading?
    Question 2:
I am have seen questions here talking about the difference between 2.5 and 2.6GHz, posted as early as 2008. So are MBP´s of today operating at the same processor frewuency as the were five years ago?
    Regards
    Maja Karlsson, Sweden

They are operating at the same frequency, but are far more efficient at their abilities to perform calculations, so even though they are at the same speed they both yield better battery life and can get more done.
When it comes to simple calculations like adding 4+5=9, the speeds are more dependent on the clock cycle rate and will scale more directly with the GHz of the CPU, but these are not the types of calculations that are in demand. The ones that matter are rather complex details involved with 2D and 3D object transformations, video encoding, audio handling, and other details that for an older processor might require 5-10x more CPU cycles to compute than a modern processor. In addition, efficiency and smaller processor manufacturing designs offer these capabilities in systems that have hours of battery life (the new MacBook Air's running the new "Haswell" processors from Intel offer around 70% more battery life than the prior models, even though both offer similar CPU speeds).
This is why iPads and iPhones can play a full-featured movie without draining the battery, whereas you do the same on a MacBook from 2003 and you'd likely get through half the film before the battery dies. Sure battery capabilities are part of the equation, but the hardware's power draw and efficiency are the other factor.
My recommendations are to go with the faster CPU, especially if other details like RAM and hard drive capabilities can be upgraded. Unfortunately this is not always the case, especially with the MacBook Pro (such as the Retina models that have fixed amounts of RAM), but if possible, then get the faster CPU and GPU combination, and then upgrade the RAM and hard drive at a later point.
However, RAM is just as important as CPU power, since if you run low on RAM then regardless of the CPU speed your system will bog down. Therefore, if the system's RAM cannot be upgraded at a later date, then I recommmend you set RAM amounts as the priority and ensure you maximize it, even if you have to sacrifice CPU options and use the lower-clocked processor to stay within your budget.

Hi, Polynomial. Try posting the question in one of the G5 forums. Most MacBook Pro owners aren't likely to be of much help with it.

  • Itunes spinning wheel of death - when playing **CDs ONLY**

often when i have a cd playing and i am skipping thru & unchecking tracks, i get an eternal spinning wheel freeze and i have to force quit. it's not the temporary freeze like others on this forum have mentioned. this is a permanent crash - i have waited an hour before and gone back to itunes and it's still frozen and spinning. this doesnt happen if the cd plays with no mouse interaction. only when skipping and unchecking track boxes. i have noticed that it often happens when i click to a point a few seconds from the very end of a track where that one or the next one is unchecked. this doesnt happen if i click the skip button or use key command, but only if i click a point at the end of the currently playing song's time status bar at the very top, which is the way i need to do it for many reasons.
this has been happening since Tiger and with 10.5.2 & 10.5.3. it happened on the last several versions of itunes and quicktime, going back to itunes 7.5. it never happened with 7.4.2 and it never happened with any itunes version before 7.5. it also happened with 10.4.8 and itunes 7.5 before i upgraded to 10.4.11. sometimes it crashes up to 10x/day. it makes me downright violent as all the store searches of things i'm researching are then cleared since you cant bookmark store pages. it happened on my dual 2.5ghz PPC G5, and my new Mac Pro with a clean install on a new hard drive w/ new itunes library. i've also used 4 cd/dvd drives, both internal and external, by 4 different brands. also, this happens with brand new, store bought cds as well as cdrs. it's happened with 100-200 different ones i'm sure.
this leaves really only cause, and that's apple software - almost definitely itunes or quicktime. i've also noticed that the same spinning wheel behavior can happen when playing a damaged/scratched cd where the drive encounters read errors and cant play. instead of stopping or giving an error mssg, it just freezes and wont let you stop it. brilliant.
there was one tier 2 product specialist i spoke with that told me this was a known by the engineers & they havent fixed it.
if enough people post and respond, hopefully they'll address it. that seems to be the only hope.
    anyone else??

Yeah, I'm getting the color wheel of death as well, but only when I open certain songs. The weird thing is that it is usually around the same numbered track on each album. (ie. it doesn't ever happen with tracks 1-3, but almost always does on certain tracks. I can also listen to later tracks as well. It's just these middle tracks on albums that the color wheel seems especially attracted to. Any answers yet?

  • Small Biz DR plan

Hi guys, I need to implement a Disaster Recovery (avoidance) plan for my small business. We did some research and I think found an awesome solution for under $1000 (Aussie dollars) but would value your feedback.
In the office, we have 1x PB (1.5GHz PPC G4) & 1x eMac (1.25GHz PPC G4) and at Home 1x eMac (1.25GHz PPC G4) all running OS 10.3.9 When new OS is released will upgrade and add on new MacBook Pro to replace PB as main source.
We don't really have a file server as most of our business is browser based and original files are accessed from & kept on the PB. Both office and home use NetComm NB9W for ADSL 2+ wireless network and VoIP.
If you need any more detailed info please let me know.
    We were thinking of using:
    SuperDuper for software $30
    http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html
2x LaCie Ethernet Disk mini 500gb (1 at office, 1 at home) thought about 1tb but we don't need it and for the money we could just add another 500gb as a mirror.
    http://www.lacie.com/au/products/product.htm?pid=10844
I’ve just realised that these networked drives don’t have Firewire, so we won’t be able to boot from them.. bummer. So for added back up will add on 1x LaCie FW external in office.
1x Sandisk 4gb flash drive, which has archived business fold. Done manually at present.
Online storage - there are a lot now and we are narrowing down the choices. Some are as cheap as $5/m for 5gb
So far, it looks like a simple plan and there is a lot of positive talk about LaCie and SD on the forums. Ultimately I would love this system to be as automated as possible and would like to have everything in place and running smoothly within 10 days.
    Cheers

    15 PowerBook G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Little B
What are Aussie dollars, I thought our country uses Australian dollars?
I use SuperDuper and a LaCie external disk and both products work well.
In a recovery you can boot from an external clone, as all of your computers have Firewire. I haven't heard of booting over a networked drive. I think you should forget that idea.
With what you propose you could be up and running well within 10 days and well under $1000 at that. So it sounds good.
As far as automation goes, the best I can suggest is to run an Applecript to remind you to use Superduper to do a backup, as i don't believe it has built in scheduling and that is too much to expect from something that only costs $30.

  • Help with partitioning an external drive

I've never done this, so am not sure how it works. I have an external drive (250 gb) that I use with SuperDuper to back up my Mac. Now I have decided I also want to keep a separate iTunes library on this drive. Apparently, so that SuperDuper doesn't erase the new iTunes library, the drive will need to be partitioned.
So. . . I will use Disk Utility to partition that drive into two and call each section something different? Will each section then look like a different drive (for instance, in SuperDuper)?
Are there any tricks or tips I should know before running Disk Utility's partition application?
I have searched the forum for info on this, but most of the people seemed to have at least basic knowledge of how it works, so didn't get much help there. I want to ask before I go and erase the drive.
    Thanks in advance!

Powerbook G4; Intel iMac 20inch Core Duo Mac OS X (10.4.7)
Powerbook G4; Intel iMac 20inch Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Disk Utility offers following partition schemes:
    GUID -> Intel Mac
Apple Partition Map (APM) -> PPC Mac
Master Boot Record (MBR) -> PC
My apology for referring APM as PPC in my previous post. Native partition scheme (GUID for Intel Mac and APM for PPC Mac) must be used in order to install Mac OS X in the partition as startup disk, it allows booting as well as firmware update. If partition must be shared between Intel Mac and PPC Mac, then only APM scheme can be used since both Mac platforms are able to access APM partition but only PPC Mac can boot from this type of partition.
Since I have only one Intel Mac and booting from external storage is necessary for maintenance (full defragmentation) and repair (in case when internal drive has crashed), I use only GUID scheme for iMac's internal drive and Firewire external drive. Super Duper is used to mirror exactly internal drive to external drive regularly. The only time I have to perform file transfer between PPC Mac and Intel Mac with external drive was during hardware upgrade as follows:
    iBook G4 -> iMac G5 -> iMac CoreDuo -> iMac Core2Duo
Thus the decision for partition scheme of external drive depends on whether you have to boot Mac OS X from external drive (no in your case but highly recommeded for emergency plan) and whether sharing of external drive between your PowerBook G4 and iMac CoreDuo is desirable. I assume you will select APM scheme for your purpose since booting Mac OS X from external drive is not required.
Use of very old Master Boot Record (MBR) scheme will turn the external drive into PC drive completely. Unless this drive must be accessed in Windows environment as conventional PC drive for some PC disk utilities (these old utilities can't work with new GUID scheme), use of this non-native scheme for Mac OS X is not advisable.
Hopefully above information will help you in partitioning external drive. Since you do not have to preserve content of this external drive, why not go ahead and experiment with new partitions to see whether they serve your purpose ? Disk partitioning without writing zero or any random patterns on whole disk takes only few seconds. But it is a good idea to write zero (shortest time required) across whole disk surface to ensure that bad disk blocks are masked off to prevent future access and possible crash.

  • Multiple disappointments with new Mac Mini

I 'upgraded' my trusty old eMac to an Intel Mac Mini running Leopard but so far I have been very disappointed.
    So far;
DSL USB modem not recognised - had to be replaced.
Umax scanner not supported - will have to be replaced
All my pre-OSX software cannot be run.
iMovie7 not backwardly compatible with my iMovies - iMovie6 is the last one that will be produced that will access my video.
My Panasonic NV-EX3 video camera is not recognised, so I can't use iMovie6 anyway.
When logging out of accounts I get a spinning clock for more than a minute.
After sleep the mouse is usually frozen, sometime requiring a reboot to get it going again.
I have trawled through these discussions and found numerous people complaining about the same or very similar issues, but very few suggestions for solutions or workarounds, and the few that I have tried have done nothing for me. For example, repairing disk permissions, and unplugging power and other connections for >20 secs.
I am getting very frustrated with this - hundreds of pounds spent to end up with loads of problems, further expense and tons of stress.

Sorry to jump in at this point, but did you transfer your applications from the eMac using the migration assistant? If so, that would certainly cause the poor performance since you migrated PPC-only software to your Intel machine, meaning it'll run very poorly.
If you installed your software from disks and downloads, and used any 'non-native' versions of software, then this too will slow your system. You can check for that by opening Activity Monitor and looking for processes marked as belonging to 'Rosetta' - which is the translator included in Intel versions of MacOS to allow it to run earlier (in other words non-Intel-native) software.
Either of the above will create situations where you see the spinning beachball a lot, particularly if you're trying to do a number of things at once. Thus, what software do you have installed, where did it come from, and what are you running at any given time on the system?
It is true though that some older software (the pre OS X stuff) and legacy peripherals won't be usable, simply because it is not possible to make systems fully backwards compatible without giving up significant potential performance gains or at considerable cost. A Umax scanner that is SCSI based for example will be totally incompatible with virtually any Mac built in the last 5+ years (as I well know because I have one that I have had to throw away) but at the same time, technology has moved on in that time sufficiently that the older devices are often not much worth using anyway.
I'm not clear in what way the Panasonic camcorder doesn't work however, since I can't find much information on the subject. Typically up until iMovie 7, camcorders needed to be based on miniDV tape and have firewire connectivity. If this unit has that, it should work. iMovie 7 has far wider camcorder compatibility, and if this camcorder works with that version of the software, there is nothing to prevent you using iMovie 7 in future projects. If not, then which software were you previously using with it?
The stress and frustration is understandable, but if these problems still persist, and we can break down the process you went through to do the install and set up, and the issues that remain, much should be fixable. At the heart, the mini you have os actually very powerful and fast, even if it doesn't seem so.

  • Audio-MIDI setup not opening?  MIDI device not being seen?

    Hello,
I have a big MIDI problem never seen before - just put a new drive into a G5 PPC Quad - I outfitted and loaded up this drive in a G5 dual machine before the Quad came, and everything ran smoothly - logic, MIDI, audio, etc. Now that the G5 Quad's here, that same drive stalls when opening the Audio-MIDI setup and never gets past "looking" for things. Similarly, if I try and open logic, it goes through all the steps until "checking for MIDI drivers" where it just hangs, never to open...I tried reinstalling via the custom install the Unitor drivers from the Logic CD - same problem.
The drive is 250GB SATA, installed OSX 10.4.10, Logic 7.2.3, latest proapps 4.0.1 and other software, hooked up via USB to a Unitor8, FF800 for audio, G5 Quad 2.5Ghz PPC.
Any help is much appreciated - we need this machine as our main sequencer!!
    thanks-

Install the Midi driver first before switching on the Midi-Interface,
then after check for the latest up-date on the Driver,
Then Re-boot Machine, plug in Interface and good luck,
Check to see if the CABLE is plugged in properly.

  • Iphone 5 Help 6.0.2 Draining

Hello, Guys Just updated my iphone 5 from 6.0.1 to 6.0.2 the battery draining is going crazy only getting 2 hours usage and 5 hours standby before.
I was getting on 6.0.1 was 8 hours usage and 3 days standby Tried DFU restore, Reset and even draining the phone a few times still no joy any way to fix this.

    Had the same issue.
6.0.1 -> Wifi performance issues at 5Ghz; Battery life: ~24hrs
6.0.2 -> Wifi sorted.  Really fast. Battery life poor and phone extremely hot.
I used a process watcher app and found Spotify (Premium w/ Offline music) was the culprit making my iPhone noticably warmer.  Killed that and issue went away.  It's happened 4 such times so it looks like a Spotify issue but other apps on your phone may be doing the same thing.  I think what triggers it is walking into a temporary deadzone (eg: Edge) and then getting back to a strong signal when the app is trying to communicate over cellular and somehow spikes the CPU. The process doesn't recover, the phone gets warm and battery life tanks.  I filed a ticket with Spotify in any case.
For the moment I have stopped using Spotify and ensuring when I do I consiously force quit it. On balance iPhone 6.0.2 battery life is marginally worse, but lasting about ~20 hrs which is ok.
    Hope this helps.

  • External speakers not muting on headphone plug-in

I have a dual 2.5ghz PPC G5 with external speakers plugged in the back. Sometimes I like to get into the zone and plug in my headphones to listen to music. The problem is, the external speakers don't mute when I plug in my headphones to the front headphone jack. There isn't an option in the Sound Sys. Prefs either.
I swear this used to work on an older Mac or OS (maybe 9 or lower).
Can't this be included in an update to either automatically mute when the headphones are plugged in, or added as an option in the Sound Sys. Prefs?

I went and downloaded this little program to get that functionality back:
    http://www.rogueamoeba.com/freebies/
The only somewhat not quite right problem I have is that if you are running certain sound programs, such as Audacity, the switching isn't automatic, you still have to go to the program's preference and manually change output to the headphones. But for Finder and iTunes it works fine.
