Performance on a MacBook Pro v Mac Pro - export to Media Browser

Right now I am using a Macbook Pro (an older Core Duo 2.16 w/2GB) -
I am wondering with one of the new Mac Pros (8-core), do I gain an advantage during tasks like exporting my movies (say 300MB+ in size) to the Media Browser? And how much of the advantage, if any, comes from greater RAM?
And also the subsequent export from Garage Band (after I have added chapters) and export the movie to disk?
Just wondering if these are types of tasks that will benefit greatly from a newer machine and my times will be reduced. I'm doing a lot of waiting now...
Thanks-

My GPU is the X1900, not sure how that fits in with the current MP options, it's likely been surpassed by now, I've had my MP for quite a while now. I tend to only take any interest in GPU's when it's time to buy a new mac.
I don't know about you but importing is the bit that I seem to end up getting impatient about, when it comes to exporting I tend to take the approach that my work is done and I usually go and do something else.
Of course importing DV is realtime whichever mac you have, importing AVCHD takes about 1/2 real time on my MP, I can't say I've ever imported AVCHD on my MBP.
Of course any rendering imovie needs to do is largely on the fly and doesn't get noticed on my MP, rendering in final cut is pretty quick, I've never actually timed it, it doesn't take long enough to start worrying about. Sometimes I get an opportunity to clean my glasses during a render, not very technical but hopefully gives you an idea of the sort of times we are talking about.
I'm unable to export 1080i video from my MBP (and it actually be 1080i), I can do this with my MP.
In summary. I don't use my MBP for editing, I've done a few tests and things on it but that's about it. I don't think I would have the patience to edit video on it knowing that my MP is there. I guess this about sums up the difference between the two macs in a nutshell.

  • Can't Get MacBook Pro and Mac Pro to Network

I have a MacBook Pro (2008 - 2.5 Ghz. Core 2 Duo with 4 Gb of RAM running OS X 10.6.7) that I have been connecting to my Mac Pro (2005 - 2 2.66 Ghz Xeon with 20 Gb of RAM running OS X 10.6.7) through an Ethernet switch on my school's network. This has worked without a hitch for years, but when I upgraded to 10.6.7 recently, the MacBook and Mac Pro fail to network. On the MacBook Pro, the Mac Pro's icon doesn't show in the shared area, and on the Mac Pro, I can see the icon for the MacBook Pro, but when I click on the icon to connect, I get the message that "Connection Failed There was an error connecting to the server (name of my MacBook Pro). Check the server name or IP address, and then try again." I have tried a direct connect using the "Connect to Server" under the Go menu on both machines, using their IP addresses, but no luck. Is there something I need to re-set to get these two to talk again? I have other Macs on the same network that my MacBook and my Mac Pro can see, and both machines can connect to them. They just can't connect to each other.
Thanks in advance for any ideas you might have on  how to fix this.

I fixed the problem by re-setting the default values for my VirusBarrier X6 anti-virus program.

  • How do I use the App store with macbook pro and mac pro

I currently use the app store with the mac book, but want to buy (share?) apps and music with the mac pro.
I can't find anything that specifically outlines how this works.
I use SplashID with the macbook and an iPhone, and want to use it (and sync it) on the mac pro as well.
If you buy apps for a macbook, can you use them on a second machine, or do you need to buy it a second time?

Your license from the MAS allows you to download and install the apps on as many Macs as you own or have under your control (institutional or employer supplied Macs.) The Mac should to be running Mac OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard or Mac OS X 10.7.2 Lion. Open the MAS app on the Mac Pro and sign into your account to have access to download all of your previous purchases in the Purchased pane.
Simple apps can also be dragged & dropped over a network connection from the MacBook to the Mac Pro.

  • Direct Connect Macbook Pro to Mac Pro?

Is it possible to direct connect my Mac Book Pro to My Mac Pro via firewire for a quicker back up of the Mac book?

    perform that function exactly this manner;
Mac Pro power up and booted.
connect firewire to Mac Pro first then to MBPro. Power on MBPro and hold down T key until you see the firewire on MBPro display.
when done, unmount MBPro from Mac Pro desktop. Power MBPro down then disconnect firewire cable from Mac Pro first then MBPro.

  • Multibridge Pro to Mac Pro

is possible connect a Multibridge Pro to Mac Pro?

You'd best be asking the manufacturers but according to this web site, http://www.markertek.com/Computer-Related/PCI-Cards/Blackmagic-Design/MULTIBRIDG E-PRO-2.xhtml
    yes.

  • Why does my MacBook Pro and Mac Pro keep freezing?

Why does my MacBook Pro freeze?
    MacBook Pro
    2.4 GHz intel Core2 Duo
    4BB 1067 MHz DDR3
    OSX 10.6.8 Snow Leopard
I turned it on and I went to safari to look things up. Safari froze and then the whole thing became unresponsive - the mouse could move the cursor but it couldn't open any programmes.
Tried safe boot several times. No help.
Tried to repair disc permissions. The first time it got a little way then said 'user stopped repair' or something  - though I didn't touch it. Tried again it got all the way through and said 'repairs complete'. But no help.
Couldn't clear cache etc as couldn't get to the relevant part to do it.
Opened in single user mode. Ran the fsck -fy thing twice. First time it said both “The volume appears to be OK” AND “FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED.” In 2nd run it just said  “The volume appears to be OK”. No help.
Booted it up from the Superduper bootable backup version on a USB external drive. It seemed to boot up ok but then tried to click on something and the same thing happened - spinning beach ball and it just hung.
Erased hard drive and reinstalled snow leopard but it just does the same thing. Suggesting a hardware issue not software but...the Eerie thing is, we tried backup version on boyfriends Mac Pro and it worked fine on there but 24hrs later his Mac Pro has got exactly the same screen freezing, unresponsive issue. Could this suggest there's something evil lurking on my back up? Can't get an appointment at Genius Bar until next week and need to get some work done, so hoping someone might have some ideas?
    Cheers

... does Apple products work much better with using Apple routers?
While a genuine Apple router is likely to result in success, the reason for having one instead of another product is that it eliminates a lot of uncertainty. For example, we do not know the model D-Link product you have so no one is in position to speculate what the problem might be. Also, it makes support on this forum easier since there are only three AirPort models to choose from and they all work more or less the same.
Generally speaking your iPods, iPads, MacBooks, and AppleTV ought to work with any router though, provided it is fairly recent and meets accepted industry standards. If in doubt you can purchase an AirPort Base Station, which comes with 90 days of free telephone support. If it does not result in any improvement for you, you can always return it for a complete refund. The return period is 14 days and be sure to keep all material - receipt, box, manuals, etc...
If you elect this option be sure to follow its installation instructions, the most important of which is to power down your modem prior to connecting the AirPort Extreme, Express, or Time Capsule. All your other equipment will need their network settings adjusted to "forget" the D-Link network and connect to the new one.

  • Can't Connect MacBook Pro and Mac Pro

I have a MacBook Pro (pre 2008 - dual core) running OS X 10.6.7 and I regularly connect it to the Mac Pro at my work (also running OS X 10.6.7). I've had no problems until recently. Now, when I try to connect, I get the following message:
"The server "name of my MacBook Pro" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."
Sometimes I click the icon to connect, the computer tries for a minute or so to connect, then it disappears from the shared list.
This happens whether I try to connect from either computer to the other one.
    Ideas? Suggestions?
    This is frustrating.

I'm still having problems with connecting my MacBook Pro with my Mac Pro. Both are running Snow Leopard (10.6.7). I have tried repairing permissions and toggling settings in my Sharing, but no luck. I'm still getting "The server "name of my MacBook Pro" may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection, and then try again."
    Anyone have any other suggestions?

  • Macbook Pro or Mac Pro

I'm considering buying a computer for my home studio. I'm currently typing this message on my new iMac with 4G of Ram. I've installed Logic 8 and a few other plug-ins (namely NI Komplete 5).
I know that Ram is essential...and hard drives. My concern of going with a MacBook Pro would be the the amount of samples I would be able to use at the same time (with accessing the same drive all at once).
Mac Pro is a monster...but I do like the fact that I could pick up a Macbook Pro and "just go"...along with a midi controller.
Any help or suggestion would be much appreciated.
I've experimented with my friend's Macbook (2G of Ram) and with a Firewire external HHD. Not as smooth as my new iMac...to say the least.
    Patrick

Hang on - just so we understand, what is wrong with using your imac? Those things are great for logic.
If there's another reason you're thinking of getting a new computer - get the mac pro, or the macbook pro with a 30 inch screen.
You will be unhappy with the MBP screen size (I'm speaking as a KOMPLETE user also here) unless you get a big screen.
I just got the new 2.8 mac pro with 30 inch screen - using reason and KOMPLETE also - best rig I've ever owned.

  • Can I hard wire a link between Macbook Air and Mac Pro?

My Macbook Air currently connects to my office network using WiFi.
But for some reason it takes 20 hours to load new software onto the Air using disc sharing from my Mac Pro, the fastest of my desktops.
The transfer is over Wi-Fi and involves several Gb of data, but it seems excessively slow.
Is there any way of hard-wiring the Air to the Pro to allow faster installation?
The Air has both Thunderbolt and USB sockets, whilst the Pro has USB and Firewire.
    Many thanks,
    Bristly Badger

I would suggest to use a Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter with the Air. Disconnect the MacPro from the Network, simply connect the cable to the MacBook Air's Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter instead. Wait a few seconds until both computers have picked self-assigned IP Addresses, and the shared disk should show up on the MacBook Air. Speed will be 100MB/s. In other words, 10GB will transfer in two minutes. (If the Pro's disks can keep up, that is...)

  • Poor performance with Yosemite and early 2009 Mac Pro

I have an early 2009 Mac Pro with the following specs:
    - 2.66 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon
    - 10 GB of 1066 MHz RAM
    - NVidia GeForce GT 120 512 MB
    - 256 MB solid state drive for my system partition
    - Two monitors connected, each at 1680x1050 resolution
Back when I was running OS X 10.7 or 10.8 I found that for every day tasks the performance using my computer was adequate. However, starting around 10.9, and even worse since upgrading to 10.10, thinks have gotten painfully slow. To give an example, activating Mission Control can take upwards of four seconds, with the animation being very choppy. Changing tabs on a Finder window can take two seconds for the switch to happen. Just switching between different windows, it can take several seconds for a window to activate. It's gotten to the point where I'm having difficulty working. So I'm thinking of upgrading some of my hardware.
Given my specs the weakest link seems to be my graphics card, and all of these issues do seem to be related to graphics. So my questions are:
    - Do you think upgrading my graphics card will substantially improve things, and is there anything else I should upgrade?
    - Is this slowness just the result of the computer being nearly six years old, and no upgrades will really improve things that much?
    Thanks in advance!

Between Setup Assistant, and your existing system "untouched" (or use CCC if say you want to use an existing SSD for the system) there is no reason it should be a lot of work setting up. Have you ever used Migration or Setup? it has also gotten better.
Also, having 10.9.5 on another drive and running DU - and TRIM _now_ would be helpful.
Looking at just what gremlins you have running around inside your current system is not bad but.... sometimes the "long road" turns a shortcut into a dead end, and avoiding doing what seems the long road and hardest gets you where you want to go: a solid stable system.
Less is more. Most systems have more than needed and they get in the way and can cause trouble. Even handy "widgets" and those things that monitor system functions, even disk status. Which is why I like seeing a separate small system maintenance volume just for the weekly checkup. 30GB is more than enough so just slice out a partition somewhere - on another drive/device.
Those things, more so than and a lot cheaper than a new GPU. If  your SSD is two years old, the 840 EVO from Samsung is down under $120 for 250GB, or use one for Lightroom / Aperture / iPhoto or scratch.
One person was complaining about sluggish window issue and thought it was the driver. Turned out It happened in ONE APP, not everywhere - very telling - and the app in question needs update. Adobe updated CC (for Windows) last month to finally support dual Dxx and some of the newer AMD GPUs - can the mac be far behind?
10GB RAM? that would not be 3 x 4GB or any combination using triple channel memory.

  • MacBook Pro and Mac Pro.

    Forum,
I am using a MacBook Pro 17 with a 2.4 Intel processor which is elegant and satisfactory.
However sitting around waiting for it to render is a pain.
It has 4Gb. RAM but that is not relevant to the problem.
I have looked at a Mac Pro with two 2.8 Intel processors but is that powerful enough to render in real time, which I think means immediately?
    Thank you,
    Michael Craven.

No matter how many processors or RAM you have FCP, at present, will mainly use one processor and something between 2.4 and 2.9 GB of RAM.
However, Compressor together with QMaster are the two applications capable to exploit the best of a machine like the one you describe but for rather different purposes (i.e Faster video/audio compression elapsing time).
Rendering is the antithesis of real time playing, anyhow, the need to render depends on several factors:
    1) Make sure your clip settings match sequence settings and the result is that you do not need to render
    2) Use FCP built in effect/transitions/generators plugins and you do not need to render.
    3) Make sure your audio is AIFF 48 kHz, 16 bit
Any mismatch between clips and sequence setting or third party effect/transition/generator will result in an inevitable need to render.
    Hope that helps,
    G.

  • Motion 3.0.2 Keep crashing on Macbook Pro and Mac Pro without any reasons.

We have a Mac Pro with FCS 2 and I have a Macbook Pro with FCS 2 installed too.
Motion 3.0.2 keep crashing on both machine, and the frequency of crashing in the Macbook Pro is much higher and unpredictable.
I have done a clean installation of OSX Leopard and FCS 2 on both machine and all the software on both machine have been updated to the latest version.
I have Macbook Pro with 4GB of RAM and both machine are working in PAL SD format.
I have not done anything complicate on both machine. I just try to do some vortex behavior, some simple particle test with rate set to 10-20.
Oh! Both of them crashes too even when I using the templates come with the system, and the MBP crashes much more than the Mac Pro, but again both crashes to a frequency unacceptable to be used as a production machine.
Any hints and help will be very appreciated.

  • MacBook projects on Mac Pro: redraw problems in timeline

    Hi all,
my main workstation for Premiere Pro CC 2014 is a 2010 Mac Pro, abroad I'm editing on a 2013 15" MacBook Pro Retina. Transferring projects from the Mac Pro to the MacBook Pro works fine, but every time I (re)-open a project on the Mac Pro, which was edited/saved on the MacBook Pro before, I have massive redraw problems in the timeline: It is mostly black, when I move the mouse some rectangles underneath will become gray, others black... – in simple words: it's not possible to work with this timeline at all. Switching between CUDA/GPU doesn't help, deleting previews, re-opening windows doesn't help either.
When I create a new sequence, it looks fine, but I can't copy all clips of a messed up timeline to this new sequence, because Premiere only "sees" and copies a small fraction of the clips. The only workaround I found, was to IMPORT the sequences from the MacBook Pro projects. In this case everything looks and works as expected.
Has anybody seen problems like this?

  • Networking my MacBook with my Mac Pro - Firewire

Does anyone know of the correct settings to network your macbook pro with your mac pro for file sharring over firewire?

    This is not very hard.
Make sure both machines have firewire networking turned on - make sure that they both get IP addresses assigned by DHCP.
    1) Go to System Preferences - Networking and select the Nework Status pulldown.
    2) If Firewire is not on the list, press configure select the network port config on the pulldown and tick Firewire.
Both machines are now set up to use the Firewire port as a network connection.
On one machine (the Mac Pro) - go to the sharing tab and share your internet connection (Ethernet or Airport) with computers connecting via Firewire.
That's it. You are good to go.
When you plug in the MBP the Mac Pro will act as a DHCP server and assign an IP address to the MBP.
