Performance problem due to garbage collection?
Hallo,
we implemented a digital whiteboard with JavaFX: there is a scene (3200 x 2400 px) on which you can draw (insert paths) and add post-its (colored rectangles with paths or string a content). It's possible to drag the post-its around and it's also possible to pan the scene (to reach all parts of the scene which don't fit into the windows).
The application works quite fast even with ca. 50 post-its and lots of skribbles/drawings. But after ca. 20 minutes the application gets a lot slower. Drawing curves (or handwriting) is not really possible anymore as the paths get angular and moving a post-it takes longer and longer.
How is this possible? Is there a problem with the JavaFX garbage collection? Does anyone else have the problem that the application gets slower after a while?
When I close the window and load it again with the same elements it's as quick as in the beginning and slows down after ca. 20 min. again.
Thanks for your help and suggestions what could be the problem!
Raja
I can't really answer...
We can eliminate saturation of scenegraph capabilities since you can reload it again without problem (at start).
Maybe you create lot of temp objects that aren't properly collected?
I suggest to run JVisualVM on your application and watch its memory (and CPU) usage.

Problem with video garbage collection
I have problem with a cummulative memory issue. I have developed an air application that reproduces video when it is needed. Although my air process (myAir.exe) uses the same ammount of memory for days (stable, illustrating lack of development memory leak problems) the total system memory increases every time a video is being reproduced. Every time the video is stopped the memory used by this video is released but not completely resulting to a continuously increasing system memory. Is this a graphics card problem, an OS graphics garbage collection problem or an air development problem! Has anyone ever had a similar problem? Every response would be helpful.
Thank you in advance.Just a question ..??.. as a result of this dbconn getting freed before method ends , are you getting resultsetclosed error ?..

Performance problems due to sequential read on tables WBCROSSGT and CROSS
Hello all,
got the SAPNW2004s Sneak Preview ABAP installed. Performance is quite ok. But with certain dictionary operations like creating new attributes for a class I experience exceptional long runtimes and timeout dumps. In SM50 I see a sequential read on table WBCROSSGT. In OSS I can't find anything applicable yet for this release (SAP_BASIS 700, support level 5).
Any suggestions appreciated.
SimonHello,
i had exactly the same problem after upgrading from MS SQL 2005 to MS SQl 2008 R2.
Our DEV system was almost completely exhausted and normal operation wasn't possible anymore.
SAP Note 1479008 solved the issue, even it is only "released" for MaxDB.

Performance problem due to anonymous blocks
Hi,
One of the users on our database has created a procedure consisting of many blocks like the one given below:
begin
select func1(var1,var2,var3)into vcompvalue from dual;
if vcompvalue < 0 then
vcompvalue := 0;
end if;
exception when no_data_found then
vcompvalue := 0;
end;
The procedure takes a long time to execute.Instead of writing a block, will writing SQL%NOTFOUND instead of the exception and merging the blocks with rest of the code improve performance?
Thanks for the help!
Vinayak ThatteI would guess it might; you'd be cutting down the number of PL/SQL clauses that have to be parsed, etc, so if you have enough anonymous blocks you may see a difference.
On a more specific note can I just ask why you're checking for NO_DATA_FOUND? If DUAL ever throws this exception you've got serious problems with your database. If it's being thrown by your FUNC1 you might be better off (from a performance point of view) handling that exception within the function.

Hi All,
I am facing some problem with frequent Garbage Collection application running in the background. Issue in production system. Frequently GC is happening, which is affecting the performance. Is there any work around. Issue is affecting the employees and data is inconsistent.
Please help on this asap.
Regards,
SooryaHi,
>>>I am facing some problem with frequent Garbage Collection application running in the background.
usually issues with GC are not that simple
also you need to check what kind of GC is happening first then you can start checking why
but my guess would be there is something wrong with the flow and this is causing the GC to work in a wrong way
(if it was working before)
when I did GC checks for my clients it was at least one day of work sometimes to find out what was wrong + repairs later on

SAX XML Parsing and Garbage Collection
I'm writing an XML parser that is running extremely slow while parsing large documents, I believe due to garbage collection. The implementation just overloads the DefaultHandler and hands that to a SAX Parser. This works fine on 2500 line XML document, taking on average a second or two, but becomes untennable when the document size is increased by a factor of 10 (often taking 5+ minutes).
I come from a C++ background and haven't dealt with automatic garbage collection at an expert level, so I'd appreciate any help. Below is a snapshot garbage collection done while a 25000 line document being parsed. It looks to me as the young objects are staying small, but older objects are going between 13M and 90M and back again. Is that what's happening? Can anyone give me leads as to what to look? Thanks in advance.

Premature Garbage Collection of Remote Objects
I have a problem with distributed garbage collection and RMI. In CSPoker we try to support RMI for client-server communication. The client looks up the server through the registry, calls the login method and receives back a Remote Object reference called ServerContext. The client can register Remote even listener Objects with the server.
In both directions we occasionally see:
java.rmi.NoSuchObjectException: no such object in table
The behaviour is completely unpredictable. Some developers never see it, others see it all the time. Even on the same machine, sometimes it failes immediately
and sometimes it fails after a while. One person running the Sun JRE 6 on Windows has this poblem most frequently.
Can this be a bug or do we misinterpret something? The way we see it, as long as the client leases the Remote Object it shouldn't be GCed. All tests are run on localhost so no network partition can occur.
The problem would probably be solved if we hold static references to all Remote Objects in the local JVM. This is not an option because we want the Objects to be GCed once the lease expires.
Here are 2 debugging outputs of server runs with RMI logging enabled:
http://cspoker.pastebin.com/f27a7d6fc
As you can see, the lease requests are coming through but a NoSuchObjectException is thrown and the Object is finalized.

For instance:

The behaviour is non-deterministic in any case but yes, on the Linux JVM I'm not seeing the problem, somebody on Windows gets it all the time. -
Managing gigabytes with Java garbage collection ?
I am at the early stage of Java development project (kind of a memory based database index server) which easily involves managing 500.000+ very large Java objects (array based as this is the only way to use memory efficiently in Java) + a couple of millions of smaller objects.
Most of the objects are long lived but some (query) operations involve temporary creation of several 100MB+ sized objects. The app should run on Windows or Unix\Linux and will probably require/use up to 1-2GB of RAM (max possible on typical 32bit OS). At best it should be able to run under the JDK1.3+ hotspot VM.
I am concerned that the garbage collection by the VM may be a problem. While the app does not have real-time requirements, most (query) operations ought to complete in less than a second. Frequent complete GC freezes of say 5+ seconds would not be acceptable.
Anyone with experience on this ? Do you expect that I will get a problem with Java garbage collection or am I too concerned about this ?Anyone with experience on this ? Do you expect that I
will get a problem with Java garbage collection or am
I too concerned about this ?With an application that size, yes, you will run into problems, unless you are very careful.
Not being familiar with your applications memory allocation and access patterns, it's hard to be more specific. Perhaps something like 1.4.1's incremental GC will help in your case, but simply getting the VM to allocate and manage 2GB of memory will be a challenge.
Caveat emptor..
(See if you can split your application into smaller applications that can be run in different virtual machines; as long as each application's virtual machine doesn't grow too large, the GC problem will be manageable, and more importantly, you'll be able to use more than 2GB of memory comfortably). -
Help needed!! Novice with Garbage Collection problems.
Hi Guys,
Really hoping somebody can help me here. I am a relative novice when it comes to all things Java but i am slowly trying to learn. I have come across an issue which i have identified but i am just not sure what to do about it.
Ok, in a nut shell the issue seems to be revolving around the frequency of garbage collection. From the default-err.log file i am seeing (on average) an Allocation Failure occur every 2 secs. Here is a sample from the log with verbose:gc active:
<AF[4986]: Allocation Failure. need 208480 bytes, 78 ms since last AF>
<AF[4986]: managing allocation failure, action=2 (559165976/1342176248)>
<GC: Mon Oct 11 11:51:12 2004
<GC(4986): freed 4101528 bytes in 1559 ms, 41% free (563267504/1342176248)>
<GC(4986): mark: 1301 ms, sweep: 258 ms, compact: 0 ms>
<GC(4986): refs: soft 0 (age >= 32), weak 0, final 0, phantom 0>
<AF[4986]: completed in 1563 ms>
<AF[4987]: Allocation Failure. need 208536 bytes, 78 ms since last AF>
<AF[4987]: managing allocation failure, action=2 (559138336/1342176248)>
<GC: Mon Oct 11 11:51:14 2004
<GC(4987): freed 4105128 bytes in 1563 ms, 41% free (563243464/1342176248)>
<GC(4987): mark: 1293 ms, sweep: 270 ms, compact: 0 ms>
<GC(4987): refs: soft 0 (age >= 32), weak 0, final 0, phantom 0>
<AF[4987]: completed in 1563 ms>
As you can see, allocation failures are occuring all the time, and with 2secs between events, and each GC taking around 1.5secs, i am having massive problems with the response of the server. It seems that the javaw.exe process is just pegged at 100% CPU the whole time and then it will eventually grind to a halt, and the users will get terrible response times.
OK, the questions are:
- Even to me (a novice) the above extract from the log doesnt look good. Am i right?
- what would be causing this? (i know - how long is a peice of string but i am hoping somebody can point me in the right direction so i can look some more)
- what can i do about it? Is there any parameters i can put into the java args to help me out?
Currently i am running -Xms of 128meg and an -Xmx of 1024m with no other settings. There are at the moment about 200users logged onto this server concurrently, and it seems to die a couple of hours into them all being logged on. I then have to kick everybody out and reboot to get it in a working state again.
I am in some serious need of help from some gurus!! any help would be invaluable, thanks heaps guys.
TimHi Again guys, thanks for all your replies.
I have been working my butt of on this issue and i just cant seem to get anywhere... probably due to my complete lack of knowledge on this whole GC thing! :)
One thing that i have noticed that seems to be very consistant is the fact that as soon as i get an "action=2" in my default-err.log from an allocation failure, thats when the system goes nuts and tends to not recover.
At all other times it is an action=1, and the system seems to be running OK, but as soon as i get action=2, the time between GC events drop from seconds to miliseconds, and the bytes required just skyrockets. It keeps on this upward spiral till i just have to reboot the box.
From all my reading, i have found that an action=2 means "2 - The Garbage Collector has tried to allocate out of the wilderness, and failed."
This is the only item in the logs that i see is directly related to the server performance.
Can anybody please explain to me (in laymans terms) what the action=2 means, what may cause it and what i should be looking at changing to fix it?
The extract from the log files (in my first post in this thread) are still valid, as are the min/max memory settings.
Any help at all would be invaluable.
Thanks very much.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2. -
Full Garbage Collection Problem
Hi All,
We are working on NetWeaver Application Server JAVA 7.0
I am getting an error message in of the the EWA reports for JAVA system. The red alert says as below:
The maximum ratio of full garbage collections to total garbage collections in the reported interval was higher than 90%.
In order to solve the above problem, I increased Heap Memory for all JAVA Server nodes to 3072 (earlier it was 2048 for all the server nodes). However, still I am getting same error in EWA report.
Can any one help me in further analysing and solving the above problem?
Your help is appreciated.Here are links to some of the tools. I have worked with [IBM GC for IBM JVM|http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/library/j-ibmtools2/index.html]. You may have to try others that can read Sun JVM's GC log.

Does anyone know about Master Collection CS6 performance problems on OSX Mountain Lion?
I have a 15" MBP (late 2011) and I'm having some poor performance problems even after a clear install, reindexing the system and fixing all permission errors in Disk Utility. I have some suspicions about compatibility problems with Adobe Master Collection CS6 cause those are the programms I always work with and in wich I have experienced a bad performance.
Hardware test says everything is fine. Any sugestion?Guys, I suffered the same problem for 4 days. I am on the new MBP Pro Retina Display + Mountain Lion 16GB Ram, etc...
I first thought it was to do with retina display however no, that is not the case.
SOLUTION (sounds odd but works):
The only way I found to fix it, is setting photoshop to use the East Asian text engine instead of the Middle East one. (Prefs -> Type -> East Asian). Then restart Photoshop. -
Problem setting up data collection for a performance problem
We have a performance problem on our production environment: there is a query that is long to display specially on specific records involving a lot of détails. I had the idea to set up data collection to investigate the problem.
I used the wizard to set up data collection with default settings.
I had created a database PERF_DW on our test server for that purpose.
I didn't have any problem with the wizard: it created data collection sets and SQL Server agents tasks and probably many objects. But I don't know where I missed something but I didnt, have the chance to specify the database I wanted to tune
and even when I started data collection, I couldn't figure out where were the reports.
Then I tought that I did it all wrong so I stopped data collection and dropped the database and tried to deleted the jobs created and I had the following message:
TITRE : Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio
Échec de Supprimer pour Travail « collection_set_1_noncached_collect_and_upload ». (Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo)

BOUTONS :
OK
Now I understand that the collectors prevent the jobs from being deleted but I can't delete the collectors.
What should I do?
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you for your advice.
Sylvie PHello,
Please refer to the following article.
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlagent/archive/2011/07/22/remove-associated-data-collector-jobs.aspx
You can run the dcclenaup.sql script mentioned in the article.
Another option is using sp_syscollector_cleanup_collector.
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/sqlagent/archive/2012/04/05/remove-associated-data-collector-jobs-in-sql-2012.aspx
Hope this helps.

DataGrid Garbage Collection problem
Hi,
I'm quite confused about the DataGrid component's garbage collection. I've made a simple test code which adds a datagrid to the display list. If I remove the component from its parent without clicking any item, the element is collected correctly. However, if I click an item, the datagrid is no longer removed. Otherwise, if I use the keyborad to navigate through the items, the component is removed.
The profiler doesn't display any inbound reference to the datagrid. So, what's the problem? Is Flex retaining any reference when I use the mouse?
Thanks in advance.Hi,
here it goes:
