Performance Problem - Should I add a RAID card?

Greetings. I'm currently mixing my project in 5.1 Surround. I have a Motu MKII with 5 speakers and a sub. My Soundtrack Project consists on about 12 tracks, with effects on all tracks.
PROBLEM: I get pops and clicks through the project as if the computer cannot push all data. All of my projects and media are on three SATA 500GB RAID 0 drives and my applications (Macintosh HD) are on a single SATA 500GB.
SHOULD I purchase the Mac Pro RAID Card and RAID 5 all four drives?
At work, I have the new Mac Pro with the 8Core system and I.T. has RAID'ed 5 all four hard drives and it doesn't even flinch.
Should I RAID 5 with the Mac Pro RAID Card?? Is it worth $800 and would it increase my performance?

What i would recommend to do (based on personal experience, not professional advise)... Stay away from the major companies for now because you do not want to set a low precedent with them.  Wait until all baddies are off your report before trying with the major credit card companies.  After your baddies are removed, refinance your auto with DCU.  When you apply for the refi, they will probably offer a credit card also.  Whatever the credit limit is, ask them for more.  They will use the same hard pull to determine your eligibility.  After you refi with DCU, apply for a "good credit" credit card such as a Quicksilver One.  Some people have reported success with geting two cards from the same bank at once while only getting your score pulled once (for one or all three bureaus).   Regarding your question about a high available credit... There's no right amount.  Some people have a high amount available to decrease your utilization percentage when you  need to keep a balance on your credit card.  Say you have a combined available credit of $4,000.  An unxpected car A/C breakdown costs you $2500 in cash that you do not have forcing you to charge it.  You're now well above 50% credit utilization which is bad for your score.  Having a much higher combined available credit will lessen that impact.  If you have a total of $10,000 avaiable credit, that would bring you to 25% utilization.  A general rule of thumb is to keep your utilization under 30%.  It's best to keep all your cards at zero balance except for one at less than 10% utilization for that individual card.   Some people have high $300k limits simply for bragging rights.  Some do have it because it's addicting.   Once your credit score rebounds, it's fun applying for and getting approved for high limits and low APR's that you once could never get.

  • Should I add separate audio card to use with Audition & Premiere

Should I add a separate audio card? I am using a production premium and for now I using the on board sound card which is a 5.1 Realtek.  First I am no pro but do like editing events etc. Is there advantage dis-advantage?  Also will be using Audition.   If it is better to get audio card which one?

Many on-board audio chips are very good, so long as their driver support is also very good. If not, then ASIO4All is often a viable option.
Separate audio cards, and devices might offer advantages to some users, but all are not trouble-free. I would test extensively your Realtek chip, and see how things go. If you have any issues (PrPro and Audition), then consider and test the free ASIO4All driver. If you are still coming up short, then perhaps something from M-Audio, or similar, would be a good investment - but only if your Realtek chip does not do the job for you.
Just my observations from my personal experiences.
    Good luck,

  • CalDigit RAID-Card Questions

    Hey all,
I'm going to be upgrading my Mac Pro setup soon, as I'm in desperate need of more high-speed hard drive space. The CalDigit RAID-Card seems like a great product, with expandability in mind, as well as some other great features.
I'm planning on doing a RAID 5 setup with all four drives (as the CalDigit RAID-Card allows you to make a RAID set bootable). Now, I've been told time and time again to not make your Scratch Drive the same as the System Drive (advice which I've always followed). However, if all four drives were RAID'ed together via RAID 5, and then, two partitions were made (1.0 GB for the system, and 3.0 GBs for the Scratch Disk), does this solve the inherent risks / performance problems associated with making a Scratch Disk the same as the System Boot Drive?
Does having the System Software on a Bootable Hardware RAID get rid of the risks via RAID'ing via software?
Or, should I just RAID 5 three of the drives, and leave one for the System all by itself? Obviously, with 4 TBs of drive space, I'm trying to maximize that amount of storage I can get internally. Thanks!

I believe their RAID card is a software RAID card, & software RAID is definitely not recommended.
    Dear Jon,
When it comes to striped RAID sets, I have not found a single hardware RAID setup that can out perform a Disk Utility software based RAID configuration. When it comes to RAID 5/6 - Intel IOP based hardware RAID cards provide superior performance. In addition, the Intel IOP hardware design usually dictates that all cards with the same processor will provide RAID 6 performance that is similar regardless of the manufacturer.
Saying that software RAID is not recommended really is too little information and untrue in many configurations. Hardware RAIDs carry their own problems. When a hardware RAID card fails the user needs a replacement card that is usually more expensive to obtain, requires additional down time and may not be available at all if the company has ended the life of the product.

  • Apple raid card with Sonnet Tempo SSD problem?

I am currently using Mac Pro 5.1 (2010)
    My configuration is
    1) Apple Raid Card in PCIe slot 4
2TB bootable HDD  and 3x 1TB HDDs configured to RAID 0
    2) Apple Radeon 5770 card in PCIe slot 1
    3) Sonnet Tempo SSD with Apple OEM 512GB SSD in PCIe slot 2
    4) Caldigit Fasta-6GU3pro USB3 + eSATA card in PCIe slot 3
When I boot from 2TB bootable HDD in main slot #1, everything works well.
But, when I install Mavericks to 512GB SSD in PCIe slot, installation finishes without problem, but the system NEVER boot up with that drive.
(The drive appears in boot disc selection in system preference, but nothing changed even select it and reboot.)
(I did a lot of PRAM reset too...)
The SSD works well when I put it to 2nd ODD slot with spare SATA2 connectors in there. (boot properly, etc).
But when I put it back to TEMPO card, It never appears during boot process (even I press option key).
    Maybe problem is due to
    1) Issue with APPLE raid card
    2) problem due to two additional SATA controllers in PCIe rains.
    3) Issue with card configuration (I have to test change the position of cards except APPLE RAID which requires slot 4)
    Does anybody experienced similar problems?

    This:
    > But, when I install Mavericks to 512GB SSD in PCIe slot, installation finishes without problem, but the system NEVER boot up with that drive.
It is not uncommon to have trouble installing, cloning, or booting from a PCIe card - though the Sonnet Tempo Pro SSD is one of the reliable ones, still, you should install the OS first on SATA II normally, then move the SSD to its new home.
The fact the SSD works on the ODD port - have you asked or looked for firmware update or anything from Sonnet and what they have to say?
With three PCIe cards to contend with, they may interact - not unheard of - and the USB3 may need drivers first to work?

  • How to secure connection in sql server 2008? my main problem is which certificate should i add in mmc

i'm recently working on hardening of sql server 2008. now i face with a problem. my problem is  how to secure connection in sql server 2008?  my main problem is which certificate should i add in mmc? what are these certificates about?and guide
me in choosing the appropriate certificate.
and how should i know that the connection in sql server is secured?
plz guide me from the beginning cause i'm rookie in this subject.
    thanks in advance.

    Hi sqlfan,
Question 1: my problem is how to secure connection in sql server 2008?
Microsoft SQL Server can use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to encrypt data that is transmitted across a network between an instance of SQL Server and a client application. For more information about Encrypting Connections to SQL Server, please refer to the following
    article:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms189067(v=sql.105).aspx
Question 2: my main problem is which certificate should i add in mmc? what are these certificates about?and guide me in choosing the appropriate certificate.
To install a certificate in the Windows certificate store of the server computer, you will need to purchase/provision a certificate from a certificate authority first. So please go to a certificate authority to choose the appropriate certificate.
For SQL Server to load a SSL certificate, the certificate must meet the following conditions:
The certificate must be in either the local computer certificate store or the current user certificate store.
The current system time must be after the Valid from property of the certificate and before the Valid to property of the certificate.
The certificate must be meant for server authentication. This requires the Enhanced Key Usage property of the certificate to specify Server Authentication (1.3.6.1.5.5.7.3.1).
The certificate must be created by using the KeySpec option of AT_KEYEXCHANGE. Usually, the certificate's key usage property (KEY_USAGE) will also include key encipherment (CERT_KEY_ENCIPHERMENT_KEY_USAGE).
The Subject property of the certificate must indicate that the common name (CN) is the same as the host name or fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the server computer. If SQL Server is running on a failover cluster, the common name must match the host
name or FQDN of the virtual server and the certificates must be provisioned on all nodes in the failover cluster.
Question 3: how should i know that the connection in sql server is secured?
If the certificate is configured to be used, and the value of the ForceEncryption option is set to Yes, all data transmitted across a network between SQL Server and the client application will be encrypted using the certificate. For more detail about this,
please refer to Configuring SSL for SQL Server in the following article:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms189067(v=sql.105).aspx
If you have any question, please feel free to let me know.

  • Raid card problem, migration from Caldigit to.... What else?

    Hey,
So long story short apple has decided to crew my 2008 mac pro for a new 2009! Which is pretty awesome, except for one small (big) problem. I have a 4 drive raid 5 array off of the Caldigit raid card... however the new system does not have an ipass cable, correct? Meaning I can't connect my raid card..
So here's my problem, I already dropped a bunch of money on this raid card, but I really need a raid 5 array for what I do, any suggestions?

    Hi,
I would recommend the HighPoint RocketRAID 4322, SeriTek/2eEN4 4-bay, hot swap enclosures and mini-SAS to eSATA cables. You can read more about this configuration here:

This external SATA solution supports RAID 5/6 and provides easy access to the hard disks. I like the external option best as it leaves the internal bays for boot camp, boot drives and backing up or importing data.
If you require an internal solution, and do not mind the limitations that come with it you may want to explore the new MaxUpgrades "SAS/SATA Backplane Attachment."

    I have XSERVE 2.66 intel
there is a raid card inside but nothing in the system tells that it can see it
i want to do RAID five to my system hard disks
i do not have XRAID only my system hard disks
    how can i do this

    Hi
Thats odd? If the Server Software is 10.4.x and it came with the XServe it should be there. If the Server OS is 10.5 its definitely there. Perhaps you should look a little harder for it on the Installer disks that came with the XServe?

  • Mac Pro Raid 0 (no Raid card) wake from sleep problem

I have a early 2009 Mac Pro with 5 hard drives. One Primary and the other four in the drive bays set up in a RAID 0 array. I don't have a raid card in the computer so software raid I guess.
My computer goes to sleep and sometimes (1 out of every 3 times), any attempt to access anything on the raid array (either through Finder or by using a program that has data on the raid array) causes the system to basically freeze up (get beach ball) and requires a hard reset of the Mac Pro.
I'm losing both data and patience with this. I could just set it to never sleep I guess, but I'm not sure how good that is for the computer and drives.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    TRaymond

My guess is there is something amiss with your hard drives and RAID.
Are they all the same make/model of drives?
    What are those?
    How much capacity?
Did you test each drive first?
This is a simple RAID0 (stripe)?
Have you run Disk Warrior against your system and RAID?

  • My Caldigit Raid Card problem and..

    Hi everyone,
Recently I purchased a Caldigit Raid Card and Installed it to slot 3 in my 8-core Mac Pro(Early 2008).
But, my Mac Pro is making a loud fan noise.
According to Caldigit, if Mac Pro's iPass cable is not properly seated to Caldigit Raid Card's J18 Mini-SAS connector, there will be a fan issue that he's experienced.
But My Installation was absolutely correct and my Mac Pro is still making loud fan noise.
I'm not a novice for such a installation.
I sent several e-mails to Caldigit's Online Reseller in the USA, But they reject the refund.
They said that it is a special order, so it cannot be returned for an exchange for other parts.
But, They don't let me know about a special order before buying the Raid Card.
Also, They said that the product is not damaged nor broken, You just have to make sure it is installed properly. If you decide to return the item, there will be a restocking fee charge.
Really, I can't get refund from the Reseller?
Is it all is my fault?
Here is Asia, I can't go there.
    Please give me some advice.
    Thank you for reading.
p.s. I'm sorry for my poor englsih and this inconvenience post..

My suggestion is contact CalDigit directly. That is a very new product, not many users will have enough experience to assist you. CalDigit has a good support staff and they will help you out. http://www.CalDigit.com/contact.asp

  • Performance Problems PrPro CS5 - Upgrade to CS6?

    Hi
we often notice massive performance problems with PrPro CS5 here.
e.g. last week we were shooting with a Sony NEX-VG10. (MediaInfo:)
    Format: AVC
    Format profile: [email protected]
    Format settings, CABAC: Yes
    Format settings, ReFrames: 2 frames
    Format settings, GOP: M=2, N=13
    Bit rate: 16.0 Mbps
    Width: 1 920 pixels
    Height: 1 080 pixels
    Display aspect ratio: 16:9
    Frame rate: 25 fps
After linking footage into PrPro plaback stutters.
PrPro is very often not responsive to the keyboard at all.
Sometimes PrPro needs some seconds before playback starts.
This way editing is a pain...
No fx in timeline, only one or two clips. Same behaviour if I play a clip in the source window.
Project and sequence settings are correct. Playback quality set to 1/4.
These problems occure in several projects with footage from different cameras.
PrPro works ok  with this (PAL/SD-)footage for example - MediaInfo:
    Format: DV
    Commercial name: DVCPRO
    Width: 720 pixels
    Height: 576 pixels
    Display aspect ratio: 16:9
    About the computer:
    Dell Precision WorkStation T5500
    24 GB RAM
    2 processors w/ 8 cores together: Intel Xeon CPU E5620 @ 2.40GHz
    System: 250 GB (SSD)
Media: 2 TB (this is one normal internal hard drive, no raid)
NVIDIA Quadro 4000 (driver version 297.03)
connected to internet (is a must in this company)
connected to intranet, server (is a must in this company, too)
    optimized for performance
    windows firewall active
    AVIRA Porfessional
What would  PrPro force to work with HD footage?
    Add an RAID? internal/external?
    Upgrade to CS6?
Edncode footage to another codec before linking it into PrPro? (which codec? encode with AME?)
Buy a new processor? (i7? which one?)
    Buy any Hardware pieces?
TIA for your guidiance and best regards.

Take a look at the Dell T7400 currently at rank # 568, 'Base2008PT1' on Benchmark Results. It is somewhat similar to your own system, but has more memory, a better video card and some raid0 arrays. Nevertheless, it is around 3.4 times slower than a fast system. My guess is that your system is even slower.
The material you try to edit is very demanding and requires a beefy computer. Even though there is nothing wrong with the dual Xeon E5620's, their clock speed works against you (I have the same CPU's in a file server, but that is far less demanding than editing), as does the amount of memory in the system. You can be helped with more disks, but don't expect miraculous performance improvements. But all little things help.
The alternative is a complete new system, but that can be pricey. Even if you build it yourself, see Planning & Building a NLE system it can be costly. It gives you very fast performance as demonstrated on the Reflections page and you should not get such a system from Dell or HP, unless you have unlimited funds.

  • Third party RAID card. . .

Greetings. 3 questions (with by-questions added).
    1. I have "read" that you can't use third-party RAID cards with apple HDD or Apple RAID with third-party HDD because of formatting from Apple. Is this true?
    a) I've also "read" that there aren't any third-party RAID cards available for the "new" 2009> Mac Pros. Is this true
    b) If question 'a' is false and it IS possible to install or "adapt" a third-party RAID card to the Pro, how would one go about it?
    2. If I kept the OS running off of the 640GB HDD from apple, would I have to also add ONLY apple HDD?
    3. Is it true that software RAID can only do RAID0 and 1? I'm planning on adding 2x 500GB drives for my video editing needs, which should be plenty to start out with; the answer to the question will help allow me to plan for when I should start saving for a RAID card.
Of course, I plan on playing and exploring the "RAID world" before actually working with it, but these questions still needed answering.
Thanks. Links are welcome if they help me understand your answers to my questions!

If you only want a Video editing striped RAID pair and a System drive:
    a) You do not need the frighteningly expensive RAID card with its 72-hour backup battery.
    b) Apple software RAID (built into Disk Utility) is perfectly adequate for most uses. There is other software you can buy, and it also works just fine.
    c) You can use whatever SATA drives please you, but "Green" drives are for economy, not performance.
    d) You do not need to keep that 640GB as your System Drive. You can replace it with a smaller drive and use the 640GB as half the RAID, if you wish.

  • Can't get RAID Card to work.

I bought a Rosewill RC-200 raid card and can't get windows to instal to it with 2 x 80 gb drives RAID 0.  In the BIOS, it doesn't show up in the "Standard CMOS Features" list, which I guess might make sense, but it does show up in the Hard Disk Boot Priority list.  It lists 2 hard drives, SCSI-1: MAXTOR 6B080P0 AND SCSI-0: WDC WD800JB-00CRA1, and "Bootable Add-in Cards.  If I boot to the Windows CD, neither of the drives or the RAID show up.  I booted with and without the RAID 0 setup and no drives were available to install to.  How can I get windows installed on this RAID?

It looks like that there is not active partition on the drive.
boot from XP CD, then go to recovery console.
use "fixmbr" to re-write MBR on the HDD.
then apply active partition with "diskpart"
    type:
    diskpart [ENTER]
    select disk 0 [ENTER]
list partition [ENTER]  /* locate your bootable parition and remember his number, usually its 1st listed, also "Type" of it listed should be "Primary" */
    select partition 1 [ENTER]
    active [ENTER]
    exit [ENTER]
    reboot PC, to reflect changes.
