Performance rating under Vista--why is my memory given a lower rating?
I've been wondering about the Performance rating that Vista generates. My rig rates 5.9 on everything, except Memory where it gets 5.0 for no clear reason. I have 8GB of RAM, all of which Vista seems to recognize, so I don't understand why it downgrades the rating.
Anyone know how this works?
Thanks.
Set up another partition and install Windows 7 RC now or next month. It won't expire until 4-6 months AFTER Windows 7 has shipped. And it really runs better than even Vista x64 Ultimate SP2 (RC). Night and day, there things in Vista which just aren't right and still buggy.
You wanted to know why your score for memory was what it is, and giving what I think is why. As for games, even CS4 from Adobe is hampered by Nehalem's Hyper-threading and multicore. But developers love the power and how much faster they can compile, test, and run.
I agree it doesn't make sense to buy something now, wait for window for free or almost free upgrade.

Why copies can not be modified under vista?
today, I opened a document that built by Adobe InDesign CS2, and attended to print it, when I clicked "File/Print/Setup...", then pop a windows print dialog, I set "Number of Copies" to 3, but when I return inDesign CS2 print dialog, the Copies is 1, not 3, the OS is Vista. why?
thanks.same driver, same windows print dialog, OS WindowsXP, it is OK; but OS Vista, it is not incorrect. Vista bug or indesign CS2 about printing is incompatible with OS Vista?
thanks -
Important note: The symptoms and solutions described below address only a small subset of the possible causes for blue screen errors, aka BSOD.
This information can help address blue screen errors specifically
related to Turbo Memory, but may not solve errors related to other
issues. Please read through the instructions completely, make sure they
apply to your system, and after attempting the solutions please post
back with your feedback for the community.
Some users may experience random blue screen errors with ThinkPad
systems running Windows Vista with Intel Turbo Memory hardware. These
blue screens may occur during normal usage on the system or they may
occur when booting into Windows Vista. Blue screens related to the
Intel Turbo Memory hardware may reference a stop code of 8086 with
memory address locations of {0, 0, 0, 0}.
There are two main steps that you can take to help resolve blue screen issues related to Intel Turbo Memory.
Step 1: Update Intel Turbo Memory Driver
If the driver version is before version 1.0.1.1004-7.0.3.1001, please
update to this version.
To determine what version of the Intel Turbo Memory driver is installed:
1. Click Start, then click Control Panel.
2. Click System and Maintenance.
3. Click System.
4. Click Device Manager.
5. Expand the Storage controllers category.
6. Double-click Intel Flash Cache Logic Chip.
7. Click the Driver tab. Then you will see the driver version (for example, 1.0.1.1004).
The new driver and installation instructions can be found here.
Note: The Intel Matrix Storage Driver is updated with this package.
Step 2: BIOS version
If your BIOS version is older than those listed below, please update to the version listed.
How to check your BIOS version:
Turn off the system.
Turn on the system.
While the To interrupt normal startup, press the blue ThinkVantage button message is displayed at the lower-left area of the screen, press the F1 key.
The
BIOS Setup Utility menu will be displayed. If you have set a supervisor
password, the BIOS Setup Utility menu appears after you enter the
password.
Check BIOS Version and Embedded Controller Version.
Turn off the system.
System BIOS versions:
ThinkPad X61 or X61s - BIOS version 1.06 (7NET25WW)
Please
remember that these updates do not solve every possible system blue
screen, but they do resolve several problems related to the Intel Turbo
Memory driver.

X60 Tablet SXGA+ primary, Z61p fully loaded workhorseDear Tim,
First off, many thanks for the tips for resolving BSOD with Vista + Turbo Memory on X61. I've been suffering from this BSOD for countless times since I bought in my X61 7673-CW9 in April 2008.
Even prior to having the pleasure to visit this wonderful forum, I followed both steps as indicated, and updated my Intel Turbo Memory driver to 1.5.0.1013 and my BIOS to 7NETB4WW (2.14). However, the BSOD recurrs.
For the past two months, I've recovered my system to factory default settings using Rescue and Recovery for over twenty times, each time with the latest Intel Turbo Memory driver and BIOS. Notwithstanding that, BSOD recurrs.
During these painful experiences, I tried two options: 1) making my X61 up-to-date by using System Update and Windows Update (including Vista SP1 or excluding Vista SP1); 2) keeping my X61 the status as factory default (i.e. without updating through either System Update or Windows Update (the automatic/scheduled update function of both is turned off)). In either case, BSOD recurrs.
I'm 100% positive that the BSOD does not arise from any hardware or software/firmware I install. I never install any hardware (e.g. RAM). And, it is not caused by any software/firmware I install: the clear and unequivocal evidence is that at one time,I encountered BSOD while having restored back to factory setting and booting for the first time.
I live in Taiwan, and I seldom heard this BSOD here. All of my friends (as most of Taiwan residents) using X61 operate in Traditional Chinese environment, whereas I operate in English environment. In Taiwan, when booting for the first time after purchase/recovery, the Windows Vista Business system provides for lanuage choice (Traditional Chinese or English), and, once chosen, the language cannot be altered later on (unless, of course, the system is restored back to factory default settings).
My system specs are the same as the day I purchased it and are listed below (as I'm not sure if my machine type X61 7673-CW9 is applicable outside Taiwan):
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T8300 @ 2.4GHz
Memory: 1.00 G.B.
System: Windows Vista Business (32-bit)
Hard Drive: 160 G.B. @ 7,200 r.p.m.
And, of course, with Intel Turbo Memory 1 G.B.
I contacted the Lenovo support staff here in Taiwan for countless times, but they seem to be clueless. I learned that some friends at this forum downgraded their OS back to Windows XP, but I chose not to. The reason is simple: my purchase price for X61 7673-CW9 includes the Intel Turbo Memory, which cannot function under Windows XP (at least so far).
Therefore, I just wish to share my experience here and perhaps I can get some advice from you and other friends here. Any advice will be tremendously and enormously appreciated.

Duplicate files appearing in Windows Photo Gallery under Vista Home Basic.
I am suffering a bout of duplications in my Windows Photo Gallery under Vista. I am getting duplicates, triplicates and quadruple versions of the original file.
Despite turning off all Autoplay media types to 'No Action', I get random duplicates when I try to enter update pictures from camera or memory chip through a USB port. There is no 'Enter Updates Only' option, and Microsoft says that this is unnecessary as
duplication is prevented. The duplicates however appear with 'copy' in the file name after the image numbering system. My preference is to view the memory contents via 'Computer' - select and open the port, and view, then copy and paste into Photo
Gallery. Photo Gallery kicks in to view the chip correctly, but often/always (?) promptly uploads uncommanded. It did not used to do this, only in the last year or two.
What do I do, it is driving me crazy ?Hi,
As I know, for Duplicate issue, it might be caused by a corrupted database, please try to rebuild it as a test.
Close Windows Photo Gallery
First show hidden files.Navigate to C:\Users\Usename\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Live Photo GalleryRename “Pictures.pd” to “Pictures.pd.old” (without quotes) and reopen Windows Photo Gallery.

Edited by: Mostafa Abolaynain on Jun 18, 2009 7:50 PMIf I am remembering correctly, some changes were necessary in order to make this work with 10.1.2.3. So, if you are using the old jar which you used in previous versions, I would recommend obtaining the one specifically updated for 10.1.2.3. Refer back to the OTN page which has the download and choose the link that references the new version:

Be sure to clear the client Jar cache before re-testing. This is not the same as the browser cache. -
Light Room Under Vista 1.3.1
Hello, I purchased lightroom back in 4/07 with hopes of eventually getting a new computer around christmas.
So around christmas I got my new computer and moved my copy of LightRoom from an XP machine to a Vista Home Premium Machine. Quad core 6600 2.4GHz 3GB Memory and 512MB Nvida 8800GT Graphics card. It seemed to run okay at first but then when I updated from 1.0 to 1.3.1 it got to were it barely runs. It can take upto 5 hours for it to import 25 10MP raw files from a card to DNG format, creating standard previews. about 20minutes ago I clicked auto tone for a photo still waiting 20 minutes later for the new render of the file.
I have tried disabling the AERO Feature, I have tired deleting and recreating the preference file.
On Adobe's website it shows it is windows vista compatible, but now that I click on there tech support site is shows they don't guarantee it to work under vista.
Then I read under the knowledge base that NVIDA Display Manger software creates a know issue with this. So they stat I should remove it. I am not sure if I have the version the reference as it is not called the same. But serves the same function and comes from NVIDA. It just seems kind of silly I buy a new computer with 2 22" monitors to work on photographs. Buy the software that is suppose to be great only to read in the knowledge base they recommend that you remove dual monitor support from your computer to get things to run. This really seems odd considering they tout my other software photoshop and its ability to use multiple monitors. Hence the reason I upgraded my machine in the first place.
Any help anyone can give it getting on the path to once again being able to use lightroom would be great.Hello Breezez,
I think there must be something else going on on your computer, the dual monitor support should be no problem. I use Lightroom under Vista on a less powerfull machine with Aero switched on, dual screens and DNG files and have no problem whatsoever. I use an ATI Radeon X800 Pro video adapter, not exatly the most up to date video card for that matter. My database contains more the 7000 photographs, most af them DNGs. I would be surprised if the slow speed had anything to do with using two screens. It sounds as if some other process is eating processor capacity. Checking for updates for your video card, BIOS and chipset drivers seems good advice to me. Try switching off the antivirus program (temporarily of course!). There might be a resource conflict.

Getting dull colors while printing under Windows Vista from Print Manager or any application (Photoshop CS3). Colors are as expected (ok) while I print those photos under XP virtual machine (from under Vista Ultimate).
Another problem is stupid results with borderless printing.Though I prepare dimension of the photo to match paper size (lets say 4x6inch x 600dpi), using borderless printing option, I always get printouts cutted about 0,2 inch on EVERY side.
I got strange result from HP online consulting in July or August: "We do not have correct driver for Windows Vista yes. That's why you have those problems. We expect new driver SOON."
As the latest version of the Vista driver is 10.0 (02/2008) and I use it, I do not know how to use my Photosmart for photo printing under Vista...
Any suggestions?system ink has failuor

Building LabVIEW Executables That Prompt For Administrative Rights Under Vista
Hi Everyone,
I've discovered the hard way the differences between Vista and XP... I've got a compiled LabVIEW program that needs administrative privledges to run. However, when a user launches the program without proper rights under Vista, it doesn't prompt for administrative rights, it just runs and produces strange errors. Is there a way to make the program prompt the user for administrative rights so that they don't always have to right-click and select "Run as administrator"? I heard mention of a "manifest" file that can do this, but I haven't found any details.
Thanks!I have no solution, but do you know why have to be an Admin to run your program? Do you write data to c:\program files? or any other 'forbidden' location?
Maybe rewriting your app is the best option?

Enhanced USB Port Replicator under Vista with blank taskbar
I have an annoying bug where the vista taskbar goes blank under Vista. I'm running an X300 with the Enhanced USB Port Replicator attached to an external monitor. I have set the external monitor as the primary monitor. With this configuration, the taskbar usually goes blank -- i.e. the taskbar shows nothing except a window frame and the start button. There are no applications shown, no quicklaunch icons, no tooltray icons... nothing. The taskbar is still functioning correctly, and it will show thumbnails of open applications, or allow you to click on any items that are there but not displayed. Any idea why this bug is there or how to fix it.
I found it really annoying and problematic till I found an quick workaround... unlock the taskbar and stretch it out and it will begin displaying properly again.I have an X301 running Vista Business. The 2 second freezes are really annoying.
Has anyone tried the displaylink driver http://www.displaylink.com/downloads.html to see if it helps? -
Skype Performance Bug under Windows 8 x64 / endles...
Dear Developers,
please get rid of an annoying bug under Windows 8 x64 - this bug exists since several versions and still not fixed.
Summary:
After a while - maybe associated with energy saving options - a thread in Skype is getting more and more CPU time, causes by a thread always starts with ntdll!RtlGetCurrentPeb+0xf (see att.) <- what does this thread actually?
Results:
Heavy CPU usage, slowly Skype response - missing Messages. Only Skype restarts helps.
I will do more investigation if needed. Let me know.
Update:
The thread uninterruptedly reads from
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\MMDevices\Audio\Render\*
Appears to a not catched endless loop?

Under Windows 8, however, replacing the Windows driver with the latest Lenovo driver has reduced "Desktop graphics performance" to 5.6! What gives?
P.S. I just discovered a Power Options advanced power setting "Intel Graphics Power Plan", which was set to "Maximum Battery Life" for both battery and plugged in. I changed it to "Maximum Performance" when plugged in, but the Windows experience Index (WEI) for "Desktop graphics performance" remains a mer 5.8.
After you changed the setting to "Maximum Performance" , did you run the WEI test again? -

I can use both with no problems at all and all CS3

Import email from Winmail under Vista to Tbird 24.6
User had email under Winmail under Vista. Hard drive dying. HD backed up using .MIG format. New laptop using Windows 8.0. Downloaded Thunderbird 24.6. Want to import the emails to Tbird. All it will import from is Outlook. How do we import those Vista Winmail emails?
Thanks.
More facts. Had the old Vista machine repaired. New hard drive. This one runs under Windows 7. Wrote the .MIG file to the new hard drive. Hoping that using this as intermediate will help. There is a desktop icon for Win Mail but does not seem to be an executable. No .exe file. Cannot download new copy until I get rid of old files but the Trusted whatever nonsense stops me. Trying to work around that. Won't let me sign in as Administrator. Not sure why yet. (These are days in which I really hate, hate, hate Microsoft's "We know better than you do what is good for you and don't give a rip if what we do stops you from getting work done." philosophy.)
Already tried using Live Mail. Did not work. Will be plugging away some more today.
Tbird seems to accept only imports from Outlook, not Live Mail. Not sure why Mozilla no longer accepts imports from other email clients. If it did, problem would have been solved already. BTW, Outlook won't accept the .eml's from the .MIG file, either.
Thanks again. -
Why "Target Server Memory" = "Total Server Memory" (Permanently)?
Hello,
could you please help me to understand why values of next Performance counters are permanently equal?:
SQLServer:Memory Manager / Target Server Memory (KB)
SQLServer:Memory Manager / Total Server Memory (KB)
22906680 = 22906680
even after we added 4 GB RAM to this server.

S10 RAID configuration = AHCI = Blue Screen under Vista x64
I'm trying to setup a SATA RAID 1 configuration on my new S10 and it's really a nightmare...if I enable the Raid option in the BIOS it enables also the AHCI feature and my Vista x64 (pre-installed on the S10) don't boot, it just show me a blue screen that I don't even have the time to read. If I disable the AHCI option it's ok I can't boot again.
The question is simple, how can I achieve to install an updated AHCI driver for Vista x64 in order to boot and then use the RAID features of my S10 ?
I've tried do download the latest version of the IMSM from Intel (x64 vista version) but it does'nt want to install saying that I haven't the required configuration. My S10 uses an ICH 9 chipset, so I don't understant why I can't install this update.
Please what is the solution to have AHCI and RAID working on an S10 WITHOUT REINSTALLING Vista (I don't have any installation CD and don't wan't to) ???? Note that my system is up to date regarding the ThinkVantage drivers (and windows updates also)
Thanks by advance for your help
Solved!
Go to Solution.I finally achieve to configure AHCI under Vista x64 on my S10 (but still a problem with RAID..), here's how I did :
- Open registry, go to the Key \HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\msahci
- Set the DWORD "Start" at 0 (it was 4 on my system)
- Restart your computer then Enable immediatly the AHCI feature in the BIOS
- Vista will start without BSOD using it's default SATA AHCI driver. Let it detect & install your AHCI periphals before going to the next step
- Install the latest Lenovo IMSM update for S10 from here : http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-69984.html.
- Restart the computer it should boot without any blue screen, go to the Vista device manager and check that your IDE ATA/ATAPI controller is "Intel(R) ICH9 SATA AHCI Controller".
AHCI is active now, but RAID still doesn't work...here's what I did :
- I backup my main HDD with R&R (after having installed AHCI)
- I restart and enable the SATA RAID in the BIOS
- Restart again, CTRL+I to open IMSM and create my RAID 1 array (2x500GB) under the name "Volume0" (all parameters to default)
- Ok, raid array created, I now boot from my R&R emergency CD and restore my backup
- 3 hours later I reboot...and blue screen again just when Vista starts (seems to be the same BSOD than with AHCI)
- if I disable the RAID option in BIOS the (but let AHCI enabled) Vista boots again and everything seems fine, and it seems that my raid array is still configured for Windows since I see a Volume0 drive in the device manager. But RAID is disabled in the BIOS so what ?
I am lost, I spent 2 full days on these AHCI/RAID problems and nothing seems to work correctly. Each test on RAID configuration needs 3 hours of restoration. I am very dissapointed to see how RAID is complicated to configure on the S10, it's is exactly to avoid this kind of problem that I bought a "workstation" and it's a nightmare.
Hope you can help me, thanks.
