Performance: swap space vs. swap file?

After install of Red Hat Linux ES 3.0 UL3, I found that the swap space is set to only 2 GB. The SA claims that to increase the swap space, he must reinstall Linux because the partition is full.
Another option would be to add a swap file to a free partition.
Are there any issues with having swap files vs. swap space?

You should be able to use the free partition as swap space as well, without reinstall of Linux.

    Swapping meaning data in and out from memory ie. primary to secondary. Paging is also the same thing, but its mostly used nowadays as virtual memory is based on pages. So, its like pages in and out. Swap space the memory used for swapping entire processes
    from system memory into the swapfile. Where as paging transfers the pages to page file when the memory is almost full.
    Regarding Everest, I think you should check with the supplier.

    Hi everyone!!

    Swap is no substitute for RAM. It provides a fail-safe mechanism and allows the kernel to handle active memory allocation more efficiently.
    Your requirement or conclusion about swap space may or may not be reasonable, depending on your desired configuration. As a rule of thumb, swap space is usually configured twice the RAM if you use 8 GB or less and equal the amount of RAM if you have 16 GB or more. If you have 64 GB of RAM, it does however not make sense to have 64 GB of swap space, because the performance degration should you ever need that much swap space will be very bad.
    A swap file as opposed to a swap partition has some security and safety concerns, and some performance overhead because of using a file system, but it can be feasible. It depends on your I/O use and hardware.
    However, you will probably want to configure your Oracle database to use kernel Hugepages using ASMM instead of AMM for best performance and efficient memory use. Kernel Hugepages, unlike POSIX shared memory (/dev/shm) used by AMM, will be pre-allocated at system startup and cannot use swap space.

    Until kernel 2.4 it was considered that a swap partition is faster than a file, but with the improvements of kernel 2.6, the performances is almost the same. A swap file has the advantage that it can be easier re-sized or removed than a swap partition, but it can get fragmented or deleted by accident. For best performance it should also be located at the outer parts (beginning) of the disk.

    My Server RAM is 8GB & Total Paging Size 16000 MB. Now during the check, in T-code ST02- I found the red strips in SWAP Space -
    Here Swap space for -   Field description,   Initial records, Program, CUA, Screen,   Generic key, Export/import are appearing in red strips.
    How can I increase the SWAP Space for these fields. please mention steps.

    For Clearing the RED Swaps its better to restart the SAP Instance Periodically.
    That will only take the issue away temporarely, won't fix anything....   small amount of swapping in not an issue but execessive buffer swapping will lead you to performance issues.
    The answer is simple... you need to review your current settings and increase the buffer size of the areas with problems.

    On Solaris 10 I use to select how much swap space i need while installing
    On Solaris 11 it does it automatically? if it does, how can increase the swap

    You can easily create a ZFS volume, see "zfs create -V" for ideas. Then using the swap command you can add that space to your swap. You can also delete swap space with "swap -d" even though that does not delete the underlying ZFS volume.

  • File system full.. swap space limit.

    When i try to install Solaris 8x86 i recieve the following error.

    I have already used the 110202 patch for the Harddrive.
    How should I solve this?

    Are you installing using the Installation CD?
    If so, try booting and installing with the Software 1 of 2 CD.

    Using Oracle 10gR1, Solaris 9.
    prtconf | grep "Memory size"
    Memory size: 16384 Megabytesswap space is 16g
    Pga_aggregate_target = 2G and after checking the v$pga_target_advice, it shows optimal.
    Currently we have a issue of swap space getting used up nearly 100%. The system was out of memory and can't run any application

    Trying to install NWDI SP 18 (SAP Netweaver Developer Workplace ) trial version on my machine with Windows XP.
    The installation (after installing J2EE Engine + MaxDB + NWDS 2004 etc), it has thrown some error regarding page size.
    So when we check the pre requisites for the installation of the software, it is giving the below error that the swap size needs to be increased.

  • SWAP space on AIX

    Hi all,
    I have prod and test on the same server on AIX 5.3 box. And application is 11i. It's not a good config but thats the way it is here. And for the last 6 months or so we are getting PGSP_KILL error in AIX log files. My server RAM is 8GB and as per Metalink docs, i first set SWAP SPACE to 0.75 times the RAM but still the same problem. Now i have set SWAP SIZE to same size of RAM(8GB). Still getting the same problem mainly when copying files to tape or taking cold backup. After this happens we get famouus FRM-92050 Failed to connect to server: xxxx.xxxx:9000. ans users can't login.
    I have gone thru many metalink docs. But plz recommend me to as what swap size should i set. Or find the offending process which is taking more resources. In errpt is shows FNDLIBR is process which is consuming lot of swap space. But i dont know what to do now.

  • Swap space on windows install

    On starting the installer it will not proceed, giving a 0Mb swap space error. My swap file is on a D: drive. Does the swap file have to be on C:?

    Go to Control Panel - > Performance and Maintenance -> System .
    Then , 1. click on Advanced tab
    2. In Performance section click on Settings.
    3.Click on Advanced tab and under Virtual memory click on change.
    4.Under custom size change the maximum MB size and click Set and click OK. (before setting the maximum size should be the same as the oracle installation reported size).

    High Memory Support on your kernel?

    however more info on your configuration is necessary. BTW, you can also
    improve performance by spreading the swap over different disks.

  • Swap space problem on Windows XP

    I'm trying to install BI Publisher on Windows XP from a zip file downloaded last week (version 10.1.3.3.2). However after starting setup.exe in the install directory I get the message that my swap space = 0 Mb while 500 Mb is required. After this the installation procedure quits.
    I haven't got a clue as what the installer is referring to (swap on windows?) but I have plenty of room om my two (logical) disks, no spaces in the directory name from which I start the installer (D:\download\bipublisher\Windows\OBI\install) and about 1.5 Gb of memory free.
    Any hints what to do would be appreciated.

    In computer operating systems that have their main memory divided into pages, paging (sometimes called swapping) is a transfer of pages between main memory and an auxiliary store, such as hard disk drive.[1] Paging is an important part of virtual memory implementation in most contemporary general-purpose operating systems, allowing them to easily use disk storage for data that does not fit into physical RAM. Paging is usually implemented as a task built into the kernel of the operating system.
    Windows 3.x creates a hidden file named 386SPART.PAR or WIN386.SWP for use as a swap file. It is generally found in the root directory, but it may appear elsewhere (typically in the WINDOWS directory). Its size depends on how much swap space the system has (a setting selected by the user under Control Panel → Enhanced under "Virtual Memory"). Please check this file.

    Part of the HS_ERR_PID says:

    Does that mean you are running CF8 without updater1 applied? If updater1 was there I would expect JVM 1.6.0_04. Give that is correct you could apply updater1 and once that is done even update the JVM to a more current version. I see Java Dev Kit 1.6.0_23 is current, I have successfully used CF8 with 1.6.0_22.
    There might be some interesting detail in the coldfusion-out.log file which likely is in [CF]\runtime\logs or [Jrun]\logs pending server or multiserver.
