Performance Update in 10.6.2?

I've been having spinning-ball issues (using Safari, iTunes, and other applications) where the computer will, at seemingly random time periods, display the spinning ball so I can't do anything in that application. I've tried resetting permissions, etc. to no avail. I noticed a thread recommending the Apple Performance Update 1.0 (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3901).
However, I just updated to 10.6.2, and when trying to install Performance Update, I get the error: "This update requires Mac OS X version 10.6.1."
Is this performance update included in 10.6.2, or will I have to wait until Apple includes a newer version of it on their webpage?

after reading this post i am a bit confused. i have a 2009 macbook pro that needed updates to stop the click + beep hard drive issue and later i needed to install performance update 1.0 in order to stop the 30-40 second freezing issues that you are describing above.
Well, as of right now my macbook pro runs smoothly but after all these issues and reading this post i have become concerned that updating to 10.6.2 will overwrite the previous patches (like performance update 1.0) and i will then have to deal with issues again until apple decides to issue another performance update designed for 10.6.2
so to sum up, does updating to 10.6.2 overwrite the previous patches because they were only intended for 10.6.1? any clarification would be very helpful. thanks

I want to use a mac mini as a server supporting storage. I have other devices such as an iMac and iPad that will access information from the server. I do not want to purchase a monitor and keyboard as the unit will sit in a cupboard out of sight. Can I pair my macair to it for when I need to perform updates and maintenance ?

I have a 2010 Mac Mini running Yosemite and Server which I use
    as a headless home server.
I have is set up to allow screen sharing and can connect to it and
control it with my iMac, Macbook Pro, iPhone, and a 2011 Mini Server
that I use as an HTPC.
You can check this out for all the Yosemite Server capabilities:
    https://help.apple.com/advancedserveradmin/mac/4.0/
I have iTunes Home Sharing set up on it and have my entire iTunes
library on it.  I can then use any of my Macs to play Movies or Songs
from it and only keep locally a select subset of that on my individual
    devices.
Rather than and update server, I utilize Server's Caching Service.  The caching
server will duplicate any update download (system or MacApp Store purchases)
any time a device that is connected to my network down loads one.  The update will
then be stored locally and all other devices will download the update from it which
can be faster than from Apple directly.  This has the advantage of only having to download
once with limited bandwidth internet connections.  There is also an Update Server service
available, but it is some what more involved in setting up.  However, it will download
    and store all available updates.
There is another thing as well if you do not care for syncing things like Contacts, Calendar, etc.
to iCloud, you can set Server up to sync these items across devices locally.

When trying to perform updates I get this message: This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled. What do I do? I just bought the MacBook Pro new and migrated my apps from my old MacBook Pro.

Perform the following, stopping with the first one which works:
    1. Open the Mac App Store's Purchases tab. If you're prompted to accept them into your Apple ID, do so.
    2. Move them out of the Applications folder(they may need to be put into the Trash temporarily), and then see if you can download them for free from their individual product pages. If you're asked to buy them, see #3.
    3. Click here, contact Apple, and wait for a response.
    4. Buy them.

  • Bad performance updating purchase order (ME22N)

    Hello!
Recently, we face bad performance updating purchase orders using transaction ME22N. The problem occurs since we implemented change documents for a custom table T. T is used to store additional data to purchase order positions using BAdIs ME_PROCESS_PO_CUST and ME_GUI_PO_CUST.
I've created a change document C_T for T using transaction SCDO. The update module of the change document is triggered in the method POST of BAdI ME_PROCESS_PO_CUST.
Checking transaction SM13, I recognized that the update requests of ME22n have status INIT for several minutes before they are processed. I also tried to exclude the call of the update module for change document C_T (in Method POST) - the performance problem still occurs!
The problem only occurs with transaction ME22N, thus I assume that the reason is the new change document C_T.
    Thanks for your help!

I agree with vikram, we don't have enough information, even not a small hint on usage of this field, so which answer do you expect (The quality of an answer depends ...) This analysis must be executed on your system...
From a technical point of view, the BAPI_PO_CHANGE has EXTENSIONIN table parameter, fill it using structure BAPI_TE_MEPOITEM[X] alreading containing CI_EKPODB (*) and CI_EKPODBX (**)

(*) I guess you have used this include

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • PERFORMANCE UPDATE 1.0 just released via Software Update!

I just got a "Performance Update" through Software Update that states it is provided to "Fix hard-drive related pauses experienced by a "small number" of users".
I received this update on ALL of my machines that are running Snow Leopard, so it doesn't seem to be MBP specific.
Went ahead and installed it and I guess I will see if it makes any difference. I will be curious to see if this solves all the "Spinning Beach Ball" issues that have been rampant on this forum.
Was surprised to see that no one had posted about this yet.

    Awesome Bagwan! :o)
That sure sounds like a ringing endorsement of this update! Considering how much of an issue this was for you before, the fact that you are no longer seeing the problem is pretty darned convincing to me!
I agree about the way Apple handled this, but they have always been very "Cloak and Dagger" in the way they respond to problems like this. Not wanting to scare off potential new MBP customers etc.
The little comment about "small number of our customers" is precisely what I am referring to. ;o)
The last thing Apple would want to do is publicly acknowledge this as a major bug because their MBP sales would fall through the floor until it was resolved.
People have to always remember that Apple is a business, and they need to always protect their bottom line. Their biggest one being SALES.
I am in no way an Apple apologist. I don't agree with a lot of the ways they do things when there are problems, but I do understand the motivation behind their actions.

  • Anyone notice a delayed or a missing boot chime after Performance Update?

24-hours into this Performance Update, and I either get a delayed boot chime or nothing at all.
    Anyone else?

Having spoken to an Apple product specialist, I have learned that if you have not been hearing the boot or startup chime after having installed the Performance update, download the update again from the following URL, and install it again. This will correct the installation and restore the boot chime.
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/
Make sure that you check your graphics selection under Energy Saver in System Preferences, as the Performance update sets graphics to the default setting of Better battery life.

  • Performance Update 1.0 Problem?

Since performance update 1.0, my macbook pro (15.4" Mid 2009 3.06 Ghz, 500Gb), has been experiencing stalls more frequently than before, and recently just crashed. I checked the Terminal as I had a software build running only to discover that none of the commands were working. top, ls etc. The response received was similar to '/bin Device is not configured' leaving me with now choice to power off the machine. Thankfully it appears to have rebooted with no obvious data loss.
I also have noticed that build scripts on my system which have remained unchanged since the update which involve alot of disc io, 'copying and compressing/uncompressing tar archives' are now taking around 30% longer to execute. This suggests to me that drive throughput is down.
This suggests to me a drop in performance, though I don't have any concrete data to back this up.
In summary I have experienced stalls, and a drop in hard drive performance.

I have noted further Performance Update problems.

    Hi,
This message is not a issue in itself. It is just a SAP message which means that the system is checking/updating the system tables to carry out the operation whether it can be done or not.

  • Scanner "switched off" crashes boot post performance update

    Reference: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2199212
Yesterday I installed the update "Performance Update 1.0 (Snow Leopard)" and got the grey screen of death on reboot (see reference above). Long story made short, I managed a safe mode reboot and after several trial and error attempts I finally understood that if I connect the scanner, switched OFF, through the (unpowered) USB hub, the system won't boot. OTOH, with the scanner switched ON (again through the unpowered USB hub) the system does boot.
    Tonight I will
    a) do a Time Machine, just to be on the safe side
    b) check whether there are differences if I plug the scanner directly in the Mini (my guess would be NO)
    c) check whether the scanner actually scans
    d) try and install the newest Epson drivers (the scanner is a V350) to see if they fix the problem
But let me say that a peripheral should NOT be allowed to grey-crash the system on boot! Rather, the system should auto-reboot in Safe Mode and warn me about the anomaly so I can take corrective action. A post-update crash like this is something out of a Microsoft nightmare, and I think it should be fixed.
By the way, I had no trouble at all before the update, even with 10.6.1
Regards and thanks in advance for any advice you may have to offer.

You might go to the scanner mfg's website and see if there is an updated driver for it. Do you have an external drive that you could use in the future to make a bootable clone of your internal on? Having a clone is a great benefit. For example, in this case, you could just clone back to your internal--in effect, uninsatalling the performance update--assuming, of course, you didn't update your clone for a while after the update--which would be a best practice.

  • SSD & performance update 1.0: DON't ..

better not to update this "performance" update when you are using SSD !!!

    Reporting back..…….
I have bad news. Everything worked well as described above with my 256GB SuperTalent SSD until I tried to write a large file to it. It hangs after around 300 or 400 Megabytes have been written. Just as before.
So next I roll back the EFI to 1.6 (my computer came out of the box with 1.7 when I bought it last August or September) and then it worked much better. I was able to clone to it (I have it partitioned into 3 separate volumes) for about 15 Gigabytes. But then it hangs. I restart and restart the cloning and am able to finish cloning. I then erased the clone partition, try it all again, and am to as successful. It hangs overtime halfway thru the 39GB clone process and requires restarts.
This is as with EFI 1.6, Performance Update re-installed, and I THINK my SSDs firmware is 1571. I am not sure how I had determined that. I also do not know how to install and update to the SuperTalent SSD firmware with my Mac. I don't own a PC.
Perhaps my next thing to try will be to turn OFF sleep mode for the drive and turn OFF SMS for the drive. My hopes are not very high however.
For whatever reason, this computrer hangs requiring a force restart whenever writing large amounts of data to the SSD. I have no problem with the standard Hitachi 5400RPM and with a Western Digital 7200 I bought, and that is with EFI 1.7 and before they even came out with the new Performance Update 1.0.
As far as sleep/wake goes, the computer will hang when doing a clone even if I am typing in a TextEdit document, so it would not be trying to sleep anyway.

another thing i should point out is this update did not come up in the software update. i went to the Performance Update 1.0 page myself to download

Yeah but what about the rest of us!
I have two Macbook Pros (Early 2008) with upgraded hard drives that didn't have this clicking (hard drive head parking) issue in Leopard but now do in Snow Leopard. Apple knows this is an issue, makes an update pretty much for every other model but this! I've called Apple Care and no one seams to have heard of this issue even though its all over the internet and they released an update to specifically address this issue!!! Come on Apple, if you going to attempt to address an issue do it for all the computers effected! What my $3000 spent a year and a half ago is no good and what... now you consider my computer obsolete?
*** - I say that since I've contacted Apple about this for the past 2 months, they come out with an update to fix the issue, I'm all excited only to find out my computer doesn't quality & my computer will now continue to pause for 2-4 seconds 100 times a day!!! Apple get it together... Oh and its the same hard drive that is BTO from apple but since I installed it (which your able per Apple) the hard drive doesn't have the custom apple drivers?
