Performance Using Windows and Parallels?

We are getting new computers at work and are fighting to stay on the Mac, but we are running more and more Windows apps. How does performance of Windows apps under Parallels compare (relatively) to the old days of running Virtual PC? Seems to me that having an Intel processor would provide a big boost in performance, since you no longer have to emulate an Intel. I'm talking about RoboHelp, PowerPoint, and web-based applications, nothing too graphic or processor intensive.

Unless the Windows software you want to use is incredible CPU intensive, using Parallels or VMWare (or even the free VirtualBox) will probably suit you fine. I use PD and Win7 with a number of applications on a 2011 MBA. The ony time I notice any speed degredation is when Win7 is booting up or coming out of hibernation; once it is running there's no noticable performance hit. I can move back and forth between Windows and the Mac smoothly and the programs run fine. (There is, however a noticable hit on battery life because PD is a heavy CPU user.) BootCamp, because it allows you to run Windows natively, has no affect on the Mac because when you are running Windows in BootCamp you aren't running the Mac OS. With BootCamp you run one or the other at one time unlike PD which lets you run multiple OS versions at one time

  • Set up Windows and Parallels on Mac Pro

    Can someone please give me step by step directions to best set up Windows and Parallels on my Mac Pro? Right now I am running Lion but will upgrade to Mountain Lion soon.
    I want to mostly use Parallels to see how my website runs on PCs.
    I have been a Mac/Apple user for 30 years so I know nothing about which version of Windows I need and how to go about setting it up. Do I need to partition my drive? Any other information would be helpful.
    thanks, Lisa

    You can use any version of Windows, 2000, XP, Vista or Win 7.
    I suggest you look for an over the counter OEM version of XP. It will run all currently available Windows software and older Windows software.
    It uses less resources then Win 7, Even Win 7 32bit versions.
    If you are running a Stock MBP with the normally included 4GBs of RAM I suggest you upgrade that to 8GBs, especially if you install Win 7. Otherwise you may run out of available RAM for both OSs.

How am I able to do it. will it be able to open in Windows OS... Previously I was using Windows and now i m new in using the Apple OS.. Need guidance.. Would really appreciate if any1 of u guys could help me through. are there any other applications that I could use to edit pictures.

    Best if you try and explain what you are trying to acheive.
    Iphoto is a different paradigm than you're used to. I don't understand why you are trying to transfer your edited photos back to an external disk.

    Does anyone know how well the Intel Iris Pro installed on new 15" MacBook Pros performs using Photoshop and Lightroom?  I have seen some differing opinions out there, and I would rather not shell out the extra cash for the Nvidia if I don't have to. I mostly do photo editing for business and personal use. I have not used the 3D function in Photoshop, but I would like to know that I could.

    It's clearly not impossible, just different than you expect. Create your playlist as you want it to appear in the Current tab (meaning don't dump every single song from your library in there, just the ones you want) and then save the playlist.

    Look at save_absolute_paths_in_playlists in your mpd.conf.

    You will have to sync it to the new one, erasing the current content from the ipod and replacing it with the content from the new drive.
    Make sure you have copied everything from your backup copy of your computer back to the new drive first.

  • New to Apple, questions about using Windows, and other things

    Hello all,
    Today is my first day as an Apple owner. It's funny because I'm also a MCSE, MCSA, and MCP.
    I purchased a 24" iMac, 2.8GHz, 4GB RAM, and 1TB Hard Drive.
    I want to use Windows on my Mac so that I don't have to keep switching over to my PC. My main reason for using Windows is so that I can continue to enjoy my PC Games... mostly racing and D&D games.
    So my question is... how does Windows run on bootcamp? Can I still use all of my USB controllers (like my steering wheels, joysticks, etc?)
    I really havent even turned on my iMac... been too amazed at just looking at it for the first day (and also rearranging my home office).
    I really just want to know from those of you who have PCs AND Macs, if you still find yourself having to go back to your PC because of incompatibilities or performance issues on the iMac?

    Using BootCamp, your Windows experience is no different than if running it on a similarly configured PC. If you went with a VM running under Mac OS X (like VMWare or Parallels), there are a number of differences. However, using BootCamp you have a Mac-branded PC.
    I'd point out that people have been dual-booting operating systems in this fashion for decades. Windows has no obvious in-built support for doing so, but other operating systems (like Linux, FreeBSD, etc.) have always very clearly and explicitly supported dual-booting (on Macs and regular PCs) from the get go.

  • Perform Hamming window and FFT with Java

    Hi all,
    I am trying to apply Hamming window on my lengthy sound data soundSample[1000] with window length 100. Then proceed with FFT.
    And i found that java does have the package for Hamming window and FFT. As below,
    http://code.compartmental.net/minim/javadoc/ddf/minim/analysis/FFT.html
    http://marf.sourceforge.net/api/marf/math/Algorithms.Hamming.html
    But i hardly find an example that illustrate how to use the package in a java program. So no idea how should i use the method in package.
    Please advise and appreciate if reference is provided.
    Thank you.

    Hi,
    I have spent sometimes to study and do the coding for FFT on audio samples.
    My project is to study the FFT working by performing the FFT on audio sampled data.
    After this is done, then only proceed to extract the pitch value in the audio data.
    Below is the coding that i have done by referring to the provided steps:
    In my main, i call this method and past the retrieved sampled sound data to this method.
    public static void Analyze(int[] soundSample,float sample_rate ) {
            int N = (int)sample_rate/5;
            int Number_Sample = soundSample.length;
            Complex[] fftBuffer = new Complex [2*N];
            Complex[] fftResult = new Complex [2*N];
            Complex [] lastN = new Complex [N];   // The array to save the last N sample
            int delay = 0;
            double delta = 2*Math.PI/(2*N);
            // I have no idea how can i convert my sample array to double so that it will be in the range of [-1,+1]
            while(delay <=soundSample.length){
                //Extract the 2N sample for FFT analysis and convert the data to complex number.
                for (int z=0; z<2*N; z++){
                    fftBuffer[z] = new Complex(soundSample[z+delay],0) ;
                for (int i=N-1;i>=N/2; i-- ){
                    lastN[N-1-i] = fftBuffer;
    for (int z=0; z<2*N; z++){
    fftBuffer[z] = fftBuffer[z].times(0.54-0.46*Math.cos(z*delta));
    fftResult = FFT1.fft(fftBuffer);
    delay = 2*N + delay;
    1) I was trying to perform FFT with 2N samples then keep on looping the FFT method until 2N reaches the ends of sampled data.
    But the FFT that i am working with is radix 2... It doesn't work with my 2N samples... Please teach me how should i work out FFT regardless the number of sample?
    2) The hamming window coefficient i m using is based on http://www.mathworks.com/help/toolbox/signal/hamming.html . I am working on index [0:2N] ..
    Is it appropriate?
    3) According to your No1 steps, the acceptable frequency resolution is 5Hz. May i know what is this representing? And is it application for most of the FFT application? How can i determine the frequency resolution that i should used in my project?
    Sorry for late reply as i was trying to work out the thing..
    Hereby attach to your the my coding.. and hopes to have your guidance and tutorial how to extract the pitch for recording audio file with Java.
    I have done the pitch extraction with MATLAB.. but Matlab as built-in FFT function...
    So i m now get stucked how to perform FFT on audio sound sample regardless the N value of sound sample for FFT buffer.
    Many thanks for your former advise... and
    Looking forward for your replies again.
    Happy New Year 2011 :)

    I recently got parallel 6 but am unsure about using it. If I install windows using the program, but don't download any anti-virus software, and I only use internet using the mac system, will the computer be at risk from viruses? Or, if I do use internet using windows, do I need to get anti-virus software for mac as well as PC? Or can I just get it for PC? Thnx

    You are always "at risk", but under this configuration, your risk is very, very low.
    Or, if I do use internet using windows, do I need to get anti-virus software for mac as well as PC? Or can I just get it for PC?
    You do not need antivirus for the Mac under any circumstances. The more you use Windows for internet activity, the more likely you will be to need antivirus.

  • Internet connection lost when using Windows with Parallels 5

    A couple of months ago I installed Parallels 5 and Windows 7 thinking I'd need to use it some day and of course I went to use Windows on my MacBook Pro today only to find that I can't connect to the internet via Windows. It keeps telling me that I need to install a network adapter. I'm using Airport to connect me to a Netgear wireless router which works fine in Mac OS X. I thought perhaps connecting to the router directly with an ethernet cable might work - it didn't. I've also had a quick play under the DEVICES menu in Parallels (taking a guess at some settings, with no luck).
    I would appreciate any suggestions - thanks in advance

    Did you install the Parallels Tools package? It includes drivers that link the Windows virtual machine to OS X.
    That is to say, there should be a command in one of the Parallels Desktop menus (have Parallels but not version 5) that installs this package into the VM. You may need to REinstall if it didn't take the first time.

  • Bootcamp, Windows, and Parallels upgrades

    Wow...lots of google hits, not much info on this combination of products.  There are many hints on how to proceed with individual updates, but not much on how to approach a Loin/Parallels 6/Bootcamp/Windows XP transformation to Lion/Parallels 7/Bootcamp/Windows 7.  Here's a few hints.
    Make sure that your OSX software is up to date.  Reconfigure your virtual machine to not share anything between Windows and OSX.
    Start with the Windows Easy Transfer utility to save you XP settings.  The Windows 7 install is going to wipe out your bootcamp-partition disk, so get over it.  Drop those files on a USB drive (Fat Format).  Also make sure that you have or can get install media for any Windows programs you need.  To be safe, copy the entire "C" drive to the USB drive.
    Let the Bootcamp assistant download and save the drivers for you to that USB drive.   Don't let it delete/format the Windows partition or start the install (unless you need to change the size of the partition...then you're stuck with a double install).
    Boot as a PC, and try to launch Setup for the upgrade from Windows.  If that doesn't work, boot from the W7 install disk.  This lets the W7 install see that you have an upgrade (assuming that you have the upgrade license and not a new install).  Either way, the W7 install will format your windows partition (make sure you pick the right one).  Don't forget to install the Bootcamp-created drivers as soon as the W7 install gives you control of the console.
    The install runs, well, like a windows install.  Don't enter the license key during the install, but wait for it to complete and run the Activate utility.  If it works, great.  If not, install again -- this time as an upgrade -- and let it take it's own sweet time again.  Once the upgrade is complete, apply Windows updates until you get two successive reboots with no updates showing.  You can also recover your settings (the Easy Transfer utility stuff) and install any windows software while you're in PC mode.  It's a little quicker that way.
    Now back to Mac land.  Download and install (and pay for) Parallels 7.  When the install completes, delete your original Virtual Machine and let Parallels create a new one.  It takes a while for it to reconfigure Windows 7 -- and install the tools.  But, when it's done, you're back to having a Windows-based PC as a nice helper app for Mac OS/X (as it should be).  You might want to buy some more memory, though.

    One additional tip ... don't activate windows until you're done with the Parallels setup.  No biggie if you do, but you'll have to do it again after Parallels is done.

  • I use windows on parallels. I synced my Outlook 2010 Calendar through the iCloud control panel; but when I try to update the calendar through outlook 2010, it says I don't have permission to update it ?... and thereby, fails to sync with my iCal .. ??

    Is somebody facing a similar issue... Would be glad if someone could share their views; and provide a solution if it exists
    Thanks

    It was a CCC clone, and I had 2 versions,  One that runs monthly and one I made because the computer was acting wonky.  I called Apple because the Mac gave me an error message on my Time Machine disk, telling me to copy the backup to another drive and reformat.  I was unable to copy it to the new drive because it said I didn't have the proper permissions.  After trying several things, I deleted the data and reformatted.  The drive is one of my older ones, so I suspected it was really bad. (Turns out drive is good according to Apple)  So no time machine backup.  However, I figured I had two CCC files, so there shouldn't be a problem, still thinking it was my external drive that had the issue.  Talked to Apple who finally sent me to a store.  The Genius said that it was actually the HD in the iMac that was bad.  I told them to go ahead and replace, thinking I had double backup at home, as well as an online backup system.
    I was unable to restore from the new CCC, but the older one worked, except I only got about 30% of my data.  I've been in contact with Mike Bombrich and he reviewed my logs and saw that somehow CCC did not see my photos or movies or music and deleted them from the update run that morning. Now I have about 160GB of the original 540GB of data on CCC.  I'm not a techie, but because I had problems with the TM, the CCC clones and CrashPlan that the bad HD screwed up the search/sync in some way.  I am waiting until the darn online system stops scanning my disks long enough to try to download and restore from CP, but it has been in a constant scan/sync mode for over a week.

  • IP Address using Windows with Parallels

    Hi, I have a linux based satellite receiver with a 192.168 IP address and my MacBook Pro which also has a 192.168 IP address connected to my wireless router.
    I have a program for editing channel info on my sat receiver which only works on Windows, I am running Windows XP via Parallels. No drama so far, everything works ok.
    The problem I have is I need to FTP data to the sat receiver, no big deal except, the IP address that I get within Windows whilst running Parallels is a strange looking one, not a 192.168 address (I guess some kind of virtual IP address). From the VM, how can I access the 192.168 address of the sat receiver to be able to FTP the data I need ?? When I try to Ping I get destination host unreachable.
    Cheers

    Check the firewall settings on the mac side. Ping is a rather low-level protocol and may not be treated as well as FTP or web data. You should be able to FTP to any address in your local subnet from Windows. You may have to use passive FTP to avoid problems with the firewall.
