Performance with 2GB RAM and SSD
I own a late 2010 MBA, 13" baseline model with 2GB RAM, w/SSD. I am using Snow Leopard, and it runs perfectly. I would like to upgrade to ML to sync with ipad, but a concerned with performance. I use my MBA for word processing, emails, and internet surfing, including occasional movie downloads. I cannot upgrade the RAM on this model. I would therefore very much appreciate if someone who has run the latest versio of ML on this model can inform me of its performance w/2GB RAM and an SSD drive. (I know it can run; I want to know how it runs). Thanks very much!
Just went through the same situation with my 2006 iMac. Technically my memory tops out at 3gigs, but I can get 4 in there if I insist (though the machine won't take full advantage).
After a considerable amount of research, and hearing some horror stories of some folks who dove straight into Lion on older machines, I opted on upgrading memory to 3gig, backing up all my data, then running a clean install of Snow Leopard. I then reinstalled all my stuff, followed with a run of Monolingual (a shareware program that removes unnecessary languages and builds), then ran OnyX (another shareware) to run scripts and check/repair permissions.
Works fantastic. Machine is operating perfectly on 10.6.8 and with the memory upgrade and clean drive its running faster than ever. Definite new breath of life in the machine.
As per memory upgrade, I'd recommend going to Crucial. They're very Mac friendly, customer oriented, and reasonably priced. They have a small program you can download that scans your machine to determine the correct chip required, then brings you stright to an info and ordering page. I managed to get a 2gig chip with shipping for about $25. With the Snow Leopard upgrade total cost was under $60 for resuscitation.

So I just bought a great condition Macbook pro 17" with 2gb of ram, and the last owner upgraded the HD to a 500gb toshiba 5400rpm HD....the computer is VERY slow....when loading up anything it take forever, and watching video's freezes it for a few seconds then starts for a 1-3 seconds then freezes again....what can I do? I really like the laptop, but hate the performance...and I don't want to go buy another one....but I have considered a SSD....any idea's before I do that?
Thanks. How much hard drive space do you have left?
Sluggish Finder - Bunch of icons on your desktop? An overcrowded desktop slows down your Mac.
Get rid of needless Finder calculations - Open a window in Finder/View/Show View Options: ensure "Calculate All Sizes" option is unchecked.
Internet related - It's likely that your broadband connection is the bottleneck. You can check your speed on http://www.speedtest.net to see how fast your connection is. If your web browser specifically performs slowly, quit and relaunch it.
If browser remains sluggish, empty its cache.
Safari/Empty Cache
Firefox/Preferences - select the Network tab of the Advanced preferences and click the "Clear Now" button in the "Offline Storage" area.
Application related - Launch "Activity Monitor" - Applications/Utilities - click the CPU heading and see what float to the top. If an application takes up a large chunk of CPU and won't let it go, it could be dragging down your Mac's performance. Quit it by clicking the Quit Process button at the top of the Activity Monitor window.

Upgrade 2009 base line Mac Mini with aftermarket RAM and SSD!
Hello people,
I'm looking to buy a 2009 Mac Mini (base line, 120GB hdd and 1GB of RAM) and was looking to upgrade it with aftermarket RAM (http://corsair.com/products/mac/default.aspx ) to 4GB (2x2GB) Corsair and with an Intel X25-M SSD, most probably an 80GB drive.
And now comes my question: Based on your experience do you know a better match of aftermarket memmory and SSDs with the Mac Mini?!
Also i've read that using an Intel SSD X-25M to hook up an Windows XP machine (either bootcamp or VM) is impossible since Windows XP doesn't recognize the SSD. Is this correct? (I need XP in VMware to access an old app that's windows based only, and NO wine sadly doesn't work).
Thank you,
AndreiWell, the big drawback on the Minis is Intel integrated Graphics.
iMacs & Minis run far too hot in my Opinion, Apple likely tested them in a 68° F. air conditioned room.
I myself would be looking into an older iMac, or Widows PC!

I have an older Imac but it meets the specifications for Lion, I just want to make sure before I install it. My system currently has 2GB of RAM, obviously more is always better but funds are tight so I want to see if this will work as is. What are other's experiences?
Most uses are within Safari, Mail, iPhoto, Garageband and then some use within iMovie/FCE and video conversion software. Try not to have too many things open, especially if i'm doing anything with video.
If I had to upgrade the RAM is it fairly easy to do? I've looked at instructions and it does look so, but I am learly as I don't want to mess anything up. It is expensive to go through our Apple dealer so that would be the worst case scenario.Just went through the same situation with my 2006 iMac. I have a macbook with 1 gb ram, 2 rams with 512 mb. I am planning to replace one with 2gb ram. Do I need to reinstall OS if I replace one of them? Please help. Thanks.
If you want to upgrade your RAM it;s very easy on most MacBooks with the removable battery. We'll need to know the model to further advise you. Go to the Apple in the upper left corner and select About This Mac, then click on More Info. When System Profiler comes up check the Model Identifier.
1,1 (Early 2006) can handle 2gb of 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM
2,1 (Late 2006 & Mid 2007) can handle 3gb of 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM
3,1 (Late 2007) can handle 4gb of 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM
4,1 (Early 2008) can handle 6gb of 667mhz PC2-5300 RAM

2010 Macbook Air with 4GB RAM or 2011 Macbook Air with 2GB RAM
So I am looking a the following 2 Reforebished Macbook Air models:
Refurbished MacBook Air 1.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
http://store.apple.com/ca/product/FC968LL/A
Originally released July 2011
11.6-inch (diagonal) high-resolution LED-backlit glossy widescreen display
2GB memory
64GB flash storage
Thunderbolt port with support for up to 2560-by-1600 resolution
FaceTime camera
Intel HD Graphics 3000
$789
Refurbished MacBook Air 1.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
http://store.apple.com/ca/product/G0JK0LL/A
Originally released October 2010
11.6-inch LED-backlit glossy widescreen display
4GB memory
128GB flash storage
NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics
FaceTime camera
$799
So my main question is which is better, the core 2 duo with 4GB of memory and 128GB of storage, or is the intel core i5 with 2GB of memory and 64GB of storage better? There is only a $10 differnce so the price doesnèt matter to me.i would go with the one with more RAM and larger SSD.
Simple reason - you can't upgrade it in the future.
Sure the other one has a faster processor but what's the use of having a faster processor if you only have 2GB of RAM?
The other one is newer, but again, you can't upgrade it.
That's the reason why it's also cheaper........ -
Upgrading RAM and SSD on MacBook Pro 15" mid 2009
Hey,
I want to upgrade RAM and SSD on my macbook pro, identifier 5,3, and I want to make sure the parts I picked will be compatible with my Macbook.
I'm specifically not sure about its support of 512GB.
I thought about RAM:

Thanks!" I have also created a back up on Time Machine (I think I did)."
Check this out:

Once you think you've done it correctly restart and hold down the option key or go to "System Preferences" under the Apple and look at "Startup Disk".
That will tell which Disks are bootable.
Now about that Crucial drive:

It's not clear to me that this issue was resolved. The last post goes nowhere!
I always use OWC:

Just did two including this MacBook Pro early 2011 13" and a 2012 Mini. Total no-brainer! The way I like it. -
I want to get FCPX but I am not sure if it will be so good on this Macbook Pro... Will it work decently on it even with just 2GB RAM and a Core 2 Duo 2.2GHz and a 13" screen? I also have the lastest version of Snow Leopard 10.6.8
Check here to see if your graphics card is supported. Core i5 is fine, 8 GB RAM is fine but more is better.
You will need fast external drives (FW800 or TB). FCP X has a fully functioning trial version. -

Is it possible to add ram and SSD to the U400 by user or if it can only be done by service? I would really want to have 8Gb of ram and the SSD but there is no available model with such config at the moment.
My user-upgrade experience is not good. Most of this is user (my) error, there is nothing wrong with the way the machine was supplied from Lenovo.
I found a YouTube video about cracking the case open and that is what I did, cracked the mount fittings in the front of the case. I got it back together but the front edge is not as secure as it should be.
If you decide to open the case, make sure you SLIDE, don't pry or lift the bottom off after removing the 2 feet screws at the back.
Second bummer is the hard drive is right next to the USB3 port. Everything fits fine w/ the supplied hard drive because the case is slightly recessed on a normal (spinning) disk. On the SSDs I've purchased, the case is the full rectangular size and doesn't fit in opening. I had to hack into the surround of the SSD to make it fit.
Needless to say, I hope I don't need warranty support on the machine or drive. -
T400 rams and ssd compatibility
Hi all
I am planing to upgrade the ram and hdd for my laptop lenovo t400 .
Could u pls help me to know what is the ram and ssd that compatible with lenovo t400 ??
Note : i tried to upgrade the ram for lenovo t400 with bus 1333 pc-10600 but that not work .
Kindly advice .
Regards
Solved!
Go to Solution.RAM = 1066 mhz 204 pin SODIMM DDR3 (although faster ram is also possible, so 1333 mhz and 1666 mhz DDR3 is also okay). But don't use Corsair ram to avoid incompatibility issues.
SSD = SATAII (Although SATAIII is also backward compatible), 2.5 inch, 9.5/7 mm thick drives.

Anyone can confirm that Lion runs as smooth as Snow Leopard with 2GB RAM?
Hello,
I want to install Lion on my 1st gen Air, with 2GB RAM. With Snow Leo, sometimes i have to quit Safari because of the RAM is running low.
So i don't want to upgrade if Lion eats more RAM than Snow Leo.
Can anyone confirm that is it worth to install Lion on a laptop with 2GB RAM?
ThanksI have a late 2007 2.0GHz Macbook with 4GB of RAM. Snow Leopard ran beautifully on it ( I am a web developer and video editor ).
I clean installed Lion last week and it is very sluggish. It'll often hang and 'spinning beach ball' when doing the simplest tasks such as trying to scroll through a web page, switch applications, open a print dialogue box, etc.
The new UI, animations, and some of the new features of Lion are nice, but I'm considering switching back to Snow Leopard. As a power user on an "older" machine, Lion just doesn't cut it. Depending on what you use your laptop, you might have a fantastic experience with Lion. It certainly takes more video memory, so it's likely newer machines won't struggle with it at all. my concern is that the simple elements of the OS have problems running on my machine, meaning one of two things: 1) Lion is built to run well on newer machines with newer hardware or 2) Lion is built poorly. It seems more likely the former is true. in either case, if you have a "base" machine like Macbook or Mac Mini 2008 or older i'd say stick with SL. otherwise upgrade to your heart's content. -
Is the apple laptop with 4gb ram and i5 better than other laptop with 6gb ram and i5
is the apple laptop with 4gb ram and i5 better than other laptop with 6gb ram and i5
Well it depends on the age. http://www.everymac.com/ should help you identify the age of the two models.
Apple may use two processors called i5, but newer models have different optimizations than older models.
The processor is usually not the main affect on speed. RAM helps, but barely unless everything is on an SSD already. Hard drive speed is usually the limiting factor of speed on computers. eSATA hard drives with higher RPM can often yield the fastest results because notebook hard drives tend to be slower that are not SSD, but for those you need either Express/34 or Thunderbolt based adapters.
