Performing a system restore on iBook that has had its logic board replaced
I want ot do a system restore on my iBook G3. I had to send it in for a logic board replacement and received new install discs when it was returned to me. My problem is that I would like to have my iPhoto software and iMovie software that was installed on my computer when I purchased it. I have to do a clean install with the Mac OS X 10.3 disks that were shipped with the replacement of the logic board I will lose this. I want to use the system restore disks that came with my iBook when I originally purchased it. Is this possible since I have had my logic board replaced?
The simplest way to reinstall iPhoto and iMovie is to download Pacifist and then extract the relevant applications from the Software Restore Discs.
Pacifist comes with instructions; this is not a difficult operation and there is no need for erase & install to recover the applications.
Pacifist is Shareware, but you need not pay the fee in order to use it. Every time that you open Pacifist you will be prompted to purchase a licence. If you feel that Pacifist is worth the money (and I think that it is), you can purchase a licence at any stage.
If you're a plonker like me, then purchasing a licence will provide justification for third party developers like CharlesSoft to save the day for the rest of us.

Finally, if the last sync happened long time ago, it may be the case that your data is not on the servers anymore. Firefox Syn wasn't designed as a back up service. -

I am going to take my MBP to my local Apple store tomorrow to hopefully get the logic board replaced due to the whine and some crashes. Has anyone had the board replaced? Does it fix the issue? I am just wondering if it is dead silent after the switch...
Yes, I just received mine back today for logic board replacement. It did get rid of the whine, I must say that apple's service was first calss. I placed a call last Wednesday, received a shipping box next day, prepaid I might add. DHL picked up the box on Friday, apple service center received, repaired and shipped it back on Saturday. Amazing, never experienced this kind of turn-around on anything.

System restore rolls your system files back to a restore point from a previous date. You can make restore points manually, but Windows will also make them automatically. This will undo system settings, changes from Windows Update, and changes from newly installed software (including removing software installed since that restore point).
Your data, documents, and most programs won't be changed. This makes system restore a great place to start when you're having a problem and don't know how to fix it.
System restore reverts drivers installed since the restore point was created. Programs and apps installed since the restore point was created will also need to be reinstalled.

To perform a system restore, follow these steps:
Open the Start Menu and select Settings.
Select Update & security and then Recovery.
Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
After the computer restarts to a screen with various options, select Troubleshoot.
Select Advanced options and then System Restore.
When you reach an account selection screen, select an account.
Enter your password and select Continue.
Follow the prompts, choosing your desired restore point. (You'll most likely want to use the most recent restore point from before the problem started).

But you can also use ufsdump to create an image of a filesystem running on that disk, but you need to do that for every filesystem on the disk and please keep a copy of you vtoc for the future if you need to restore everything.

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.

As far as I can tell, Error Code 36 is an "I/O Error". It may mean you have a bad USB cable between the iPad and your computer, or the cable was not plugged in firmly.

Am I the only one that has had every charging cable (for all of my iPhones and all of my iPads) fail? Very frustrating. I got used to quality products from Apple but seems the small stuff is being overlooked nowadays!

Some things to try first:
1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
5. Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
• Launch Settings app
• Tap on Wi-Fi
• Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
• In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

I want to deauthorise a computer from my account that has had all of its settings wiped already. I go to deauthorise but I am being told I have already deaithorised 5 devices this last 12 months so cannot do again until the 23rd June. His is very frustrating as I have just bought a new laptop and I can't use any of my music on it and my old laptop is dead but I can't deauthorise it. Any tips would be great. Have rung apple and they told me I had to wait. Doesn't seem fir when I only have 2 other devices working at the moment.

Otherwise if you've reached the 5 computer limit, then you should be able to log into your iTunes account and 'deauthorise all' (which you can only do once every 12 months) and you can then (re-)authorise up to 5 computers : authorising and deauthorising.
