Performing finds on Server Volumes yields no results

After upgrading to Leopard 10.5.6 I can no longer perform a searches on server volumes. This was not an issue with prior OSX version installed of 10.4. This is a Windows server. When ever I do a find (command f) and choose a volume (let's say volume1) mounted on my Mac which is a server volume and do a find for a job# or any other item in that volume it reverts to performing the find on my Mac. If i then click again on that volume that is shown on the top of the search window it finds nothing. It will only find items in the volume if I click into a particular folder in it and search for something in the folder. I don't want to search individual folders. I want to search the whole volume. All other Macs here at work as well as other friends at differnt business have complained to me about the same issue. Help

AFAIK, it's a known problem. Search these forums for *search shares, search servers, etc.* and see if there are any viable solutions. I don't have a network or servers, so there's no way for me to test. Good luck.

  • How can I architect my data layer to yield query result pages to the application as SQL Server prepares them?

I tried to make the question as explicit as possible.
Refer to Sql Server Management Studio's Results view.  Depending upon the structure of the execution plan, the Results pane may begin displaying results while the query is still executing.  Can someone point me in a direction for architecting a
data layer (I am tech and framework agnostic for this task. Any solution will suffice) that will begin receiving pages of the set before SQL Server has completed the entire query?
The call from the data layer to SQL Server will obviously have to be asynchronous, but is there any additional ceremony that I need to be aware of when issuing OPTION (FAST x) to the query optimizer?

Thanks for the reply. (I actually meant to put this in the SQL Data Access forum, not the T-SQL forum)
"Generally the last step is ORDER BY in a
query, so nothing can start before that executes."
I would imagine you cannot ORDER BY and yield results as they are fetched because of the execution plan that would be generated.  For the purposes of this post, please assume that sorting will be done purely client side
    "Can you post your query?"
For purposes of discussion, let's assume that the query is
    select *
    from information_schema.columns
and also assume that you have "lots" of columns to display.
This was an exploratory question to see what would be necessary to replicate the behavior of Management Studio's Query Result view in a custom application.
I would imagine that there's going to be a lot of analysis of the execution plans that get generated in order for the OPTION (FAST x) optimizer hint to do any good, but apart from general tuning concerns that would allow SQL SERVER to yield a page of data
"fast", I was wondering if there was anything else required of the calling client to force it to yield return its first page.
After thinking about this (and phrasing it the way I did in the last sentence) perhaps this is the incorrect forum for this question.  I imagine that my concerns are better addressed in forums dedicated to the technology of the calling client (which
    would be a .NET assembly)
Be that as it may, if there is any ceremony that SQL Server imposes on clients in order to yield return, I would expect that my question would be in the scope of SQL Server discussions (even though I intended this to be in a different SQL Server forum)

  • Safari can't find the server OVER and OVER and OVER

I just purchased a 2013 Macbook Air last week. It is running the latest version (Mavericks). I planned to migrate from Google Chrome as my primary browser to Safari.
However, approximately 1 in 8 websites I visit come back with the error "Safari can't find the server." These same websites show up fine in Chrome and other browsers.
I have used past answers on here to try and fix things. So far I have:
-Ensured the websites work in other browsers
    -Turned off any firewall
    -Turned off any extensions
    -Erased history and deleted cache
    -Restarted computer and Safari
-Changed just about every Safari setting under preferences
-Unchecked any proxies in Network settings
    -Reset my wi-fi router
None of these things have fixed the problem or reduced the number of times the error message is displayed.
I have no antivirus or mac cleaner crap on my computer, so that shouldn't be interferring.
Also, these are not some strange foreign websites I'm trying to access; these are things like Tumblr, USPS.com, eBay, Audible, etc. Heck, even the discussions.apple.com has not been found once or twice.
Is this a normal thing for Safari to suck or have I missed something that might fix it? Because at the moment I'm going to go back to Chrome and pack Safari away.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • LDAP - AD - Referral following yielded no result

    Hi,
I have some problems with LDAP Queries.
I want to querie my Active Directory on port 389 from our Ironport C350 which stands in the DMZ. Firewall has been opened for this connection.
When I configure the LDAP accept querie an test it, I get an error
    "Referral following yielded no result".
Does anyone know what this means and how I can solve this problem?
    FyI:
I have configured our Ironport in our LAN with exactly the same configuration. This works fine.

  • Missing server volume

We have a G5 set up as our server, runninf Snow Leopard Server which has shared volumes on, which we can all access.  I didn't set this up to start with, so bear with me...!
I think the hard drive is partitioned, as there are three volumes shown on the desktop (or should be). One is called "server" which is the regular hard drive - contains apps, library, etc. This isn't shared. One is called "xxx server" which contains all our working files - this is shared. The other is called "FTP server" and this contains folders that we can share with others outside the company, to exchange larger files.
Normally, all of these volumes show on the server desktop. When I go into server admin, I can usually also see all of the volumes listed under the "volume" tab and then I can see the individual share points within those volumes under the 'share points' tab.
Yesterday, I had a problem with a DVD which caused the whole server to crash.  I restarted and everything looked normal APART from the "xxx server" was missing from the desktop.  When I look in server admin, it's not listed under the volumes tab. The share points are listed, but they're saying that the volume can't be found.  When we try to access from another mac on the network (via apple-k, as usual) it finds the share points on 'FTP server' but not the ones on 'xxx server' - they're just not listed.
Does anyone know what might have happened to my volume?  We really need to get it back, as it's got all our working files on it!!   I do have a BounceBack backup that is from the evening before, so worst case scenario I could restore that (could I? Even if the volume is missing? Where do I restore it to??) But because BounceBack is incremental there would be a lot of tidying up to do to get the files back to the state they were in before this happened!
Any help would be much appreciated!!

Here is what I tried. Installed Batchmod and Xupport on each of internal system disk, backup internal system disk and external system disk. Batchmod could not find the folders automount or Network.
Booting from external disk, I made hidden files visible using Xupport, then deleted automount > Servers, automount > Static on internal disk and backup disk. The folder Network had no files or folder named "Server". Booting from internal disk, the desktop tried to mount server volumes. Examining the internal disk automount folder showed aliases for "Servers" and "static". Get Info said they pointed to originals "Servers" and "static" in folder /automount but these items do not appear in the Finder.
Sometimes icons, not aliases, for "Network", "Servers", and "static" appear on all three desktops on login. Trying to eject these icons by dragging to Trash or highlighting and clicking File > Eject has no effect. Examining Users > Username > Desktop does not show these items. Sometimes ".DS_Store" appears on desktop and in folder Users > Username > Desktop.
Next I deleted user accounts so that all system disks are single user. Booted up on External disk and deleted automount > Servers, automount > Static on internal disk and internal backup disk or their aliases, whichever appeared in Finder. Booting up on internal disk results in... desktop trying to mount server volumes.
Will try an archive and install on internal disk.

  • I cannot rename files located on a server volume in Mac OS 10.7.4

    Hello,
I have a user who is unable to rename any file types in bridge while using Mac OS 10.7.4.  The same is true for metadata.  When clicking on the name, the field should allow name changing but it does nothing when clicked on.  Same goes for the metadata fields.
It isn't a permission issue as the user is able to rename the files using the Finder application.
I reproduced the error in CS4 Bridge, also on Mac OS 10.7.4.
However, this is not an issue when using Mac OS 10.6.8.  There seems to be a fundamental issue with the way Bridge and Mac OS 10.7.4 are interacting.
What would cause this?  Since metadata is very important, we are essentially handcuffed by upgrading to Lion.  This may be a question for Apple, but I would like to get some input from the experts at Adobe as to why this would be occurring.
Any and all advice is welcome
P.S.  this problem was reproduced on various machines- so it's not hardware specific nor is it a network permissions issue.
    Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your input.  It certainly is odd and made more difficult by a lack of error prompts!  What rings out to me is that all signs point to Lion and Bridge, since I can get multiple Bridge versions to work just fine using an earlier OS.
I'm trying to figure out how to get some logs generated, but since no error comes up its proving diffucult to pinpoint where the application is failing to communicate with the server volume.

  • "Safari can't open the page because it can't find the server"

I just bought my iPhone. The first time I attempted to log onto my home wireless network (US Robotics Wireless Router) the iPhone performed perfectly. However, the next time I attempted to logon and surf it gave me the "Safari can't open the page because it can't find the server" error message. I tried a variety of things which didn't work. I called the Apple Tech Support. Turning off the router and rebooting it was the only thing that worked. I thought my problem was resolved because after cycling the router the iPhone worked great once again. But . . . later the same day I attempted to connect to the router and the same thing happened and I got the error message. I attempted to power cycle the router just like before but this time it did not work! Help! Bad router? Wrong settings on router or iPhone?

Do you have other wireless devices connected to this same router? Do they work?
I really can't help you much but to say that when my router exhibited this issue it was accross the board (all notebooks would connect immediately following a router restart, but would loss connectivity until I rebooted the router again). In my case the only solution that was permanent was to replace the router.
You may also try restarting the phone and the router, setup security - WEP - (or disable security) on the router and phone, and/or try a different wi-fi channel (may actually help).

  • Discoveryd process uses 100% CPU - Safari Can't find the server

    Hello
Since upgrading to Yosemite, I lose connection to the internet 2 or 3 times a day. (Outlook goes offline at the same time)
This is with a wired connection. (Wi-Fi is turned off)
Safari gives me the "Safari Can't Find the Server" message.
Restarting the computer solves the issue temporarily.
While I'm unable to connect to the internet, Activity Monitor shows a process named "discoveryd" that uses 100% CPU.
Force quitting this process gives me back access to the internet instantly. Unfortunately, I suffered a kernel panic (auto restart) a few minutes after force quitting discoveryd. I'm not 100% sure those 2 are related but it would be an odd coincidence as I never experienced had a single kernel on that system. Haven't tried force quitting that process since.
I'm using this iMac in a work environment. (Connected to a windows file server and exchange)
This issue has been happening 2-3 times a day since the day I upgraded to Yosemite.
Any pointers on what could fix this issue ?
    Thanks

  • Safari can't find the server (Airport)

    I'm totally confused about airport:
I've got a G5 upstairs and my Powerbook downstairs. I have configured the G5 so that my PBook recognises it, I'm able to connect to the G5 using my password etc etc there is good signal.
But when I try and open a web page it just says "safari can't find the server "
In Network prefs it says: "Airport is connected to the network... Airport has a self-assigned IP address and may not be able to connect to the internet"
What is going on, how do I fix it please?
    Many thanks for any help
    Cheers

    Hi,
Does email work? Do you use an ISP for Internet connectivity, or do you run your own DNS nameservers?
If you use a third-party's ISP's DNS for name resolution, those machines could be down. That would result in Safari not finding the web page requested. To determine whether or not your ISP's DNS name servers are up and running, try ping-ing them. If you can ping them then the problem is probably on your machine.
Do you see any network-related error messages in the file system.log in /var/log? If so, post them here so debugging can proceed.

  • Prefs code show server volumes in sidebar by default?

I support a K-12 installation of around 4000 Macs, roughly 1000 of which are now running Leopard. I'm creating a new image for these systems, and cleaning up glitches, including this one:
In Tiger, mounted server volume names appeared in the sidebar below the hard drive icon in any Finder window. When you click on the volume name, the contents of that volume are immediately available as any regular disk would be. When you click the eject icon beside the volume name, only that volume is ejected.
In Leopard, the server name appears in the sidebar instead of the volume name. The server name is not particularly meaningful, since it's the volume name which our users recognize. When you click on the server name, a list of available volumes appears after a longish pause. This also creates confusion ("what are those other names?" "can I save there?" "why do these appear?"). When you click the eject icon beside the server name, all mounted volumes are ejected. Many of our education applications don't handle well this new way of accessing server volumes -- some crash, some hang when you click on the server name instead of a volume name. This is a serious reduction in ease of use for our end-users! Now they have to deal with the confusion of clicking on an unfamiliar item like the server's name, then figure out which share they want to use, and finally save their document ("why can't I save to the server like I can save to my USB key?").
I haven't yet found a way to reproduce Tiger Finder's shared-volume-in-the-sidebar behaviour as a default, beyond manually dragging each server volume to the sidebar (not an ideal solution, since volume names change, and servers change). Is there some XML key I can add to the Finder prefs to revert to the old way of displaying server volumes in the sidebar?

    Hi,
I have the same problem (and there are threads archived starting 2007 dealing with the same issue) This is not a SERVER problem. Its simply that the 10.5 finders sidebar does not show mounted volumes or mountpoints anymore. Instead of that you see whole servers, which makes navigation slow.
Any way to get TIGERS behaviour back?

  • Keep getting archive errors.  "ERROR: E_FILE unable to find md file: /Volume....

We have a Final Cut Server setup where after two weeks assets will automatically be archived to tape. Every so often I am getting error messages that state something similar to the following:
Job 404117 Archiving 214452_upload.mov needs attention. Please login and troubleshoot.
    The error that occurred was:
"ERROR: E_FILE Unable to find md file: /Volumes/xsan/MEDIA/devices/video.bundle/3dd/00000000000203dd_md No such file or directory"
Naturally I will look at the directory path and will not see the file. When I search for that particular asset it will show up as online, but the "original media" is grayed out. Then there will be an exclamation point over the file cabinet (which says the file is online). So the media is missing. When I look at the log of the file, there will also be an email that was sent out to the creator saying that the file was ready for editing.
    Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • Mounting Server Volumes Via Startup Items

I'm going crazy here trying to figure out what's going on with my wireless AirPort network!!!
While trying to set up the first G4 iBook (10.4.2) from an Apple wireless cart I've discovered that I can't get a server volume to automatically mount at startup. I'm connecting to an AirPort Extreme base station. The iBook has no problem detecting and connecting to the base station and allowing an Internet connection and you can manually connect to a file server. But if I add a server volume to the Startup Items I can't get it to mount the volume at startup.
Here's some stuff I've done to try to isolate the problem but nothing seems to point to a solution:
    - If I connect via Ethernet, it works everytime - so the issue is definately AirPort related.
    - Since I have 3 other independent AirPort networks (Extreme & Dual Ethernet) I tried connecting to them - no help.
    - After startup is finished I can connect manually (Go/Connect to Server).
    - Here's a real stumper... If I log out (not a reboot) & log back in - the volumes mount!!!
    - Up until now I had my personal eMac (10.3.9) connecting and mounting the same volumes via one of my previously mentioned AirPort networks with no problems. In trying to solve this problem I cleared out my Startup Items, Keychains, etc. - now I can't get it to work either.
    - I tried setting a new user in case it was some fouled up user setting - no help.
    - I've cleared out and set up Keychains & Startup Items numerous times - no help.
    - I disabled security - no help.
So in my opinion I've ruled out the following by process of elimination:
    - System hardware - problem exists with eMac & iBook
    - OS - problem exists with 10.3.9 & 10.4.2
    - Base station - problem exists across differing base stations (Extreme & Dual Ethernet) & differing networks
    - Users - problem exists with new user
    - Security - problem exists with security disabled
Here's the one thing that seems evident....
The connection to any Airport network takes a momentary delay during startup - enough to cause to Startup Items (server volumes) not to mount. Since I can connect to the server manually shows that the AirPort connection is good. Logging out & then back in uses an AirPort connection that is already established and then will mount the Startup Items (server volumes).
I've seen some Internet posts that suggest using scripts to somehow delay certain Startup Items from executing until an AirPort connection is established - I would rather avoid that mess. There's got to be a better solution! This seems to me like a very basic function that shouldn't take scripts or other such voodoo!
    I'm all out of ideas.....
    Dave

    Hi Dave,
I recently had the same problem. I think a recent update messed up the way I was using applescript to mount drives. I would get messages while the script ran that would indicate things timing out while looking for drives. After reading through a lot of forums I found that this script worked for me:
    tell application "Finder"
         mount volume "afp://user:[email protected]/VolumeName"
    end tell
This is for mounting a Mac server volume. I think you use smb:// for a win server.
Let me know if this works for you.

  • Firefox/Safari can't find the server at...

The last couple of weeks for some strange reason I have received this message: "Firefox/Safari can't find the server at..." about half the times I try to connect with the internet. There doesn't seen to be a particular type of site that this affects. Many of them are among my bookmarks. Always when I try again immediately I still can't get in. But half an hour later sometimes I can access the site without problems. I could understand it if these were high volume sites accessed at peak times, but this is not the case. My settings haven't changed and I haven't downloaded (as far as I know) any file that could cause this. I had a virus checker and it didn't find anything. Could anyone give me an idea what's going on??
    Thanks,
    Chris

I was having this problem after updating to firefox 4.0. Error loading page and/or some pages wouldn't load completely. After trying everything I could find in Support, various other forums and talking with Apple Support with no success, I called my ISP. They rebooted my modem from there end and Voila! Firefox and Safari are working normally again.

  • Finding my server

Mac OS 10 / DREAMWEAVER MX
I'm a beginner: I changed one too many things and now I
    cannot correct the server information.
When I try to preview in browser this is what I get: Safari
    can’t open the page “
    http://macintosh%20hd/TMPgkqa1aun2q.html”
because it can’t find the server
“macintosh%20hd”. When I installed Dreamweaver it seems
to do all of this on its own. Any help?

The Mac standard is to name the hard drive "Macintosh HD". I
    don't think
that's going to be the problem.
The path to the server, however, should be
    http://localhost, or
    http://127.0.0.1, or
    http://yourCOMPUTERname, not
    your hard drive name.

  • Why can't Safari find this server?

I use gmail to access my email. my daughter recommended me for an American Express Jetblue card that has to be signed up for thru the email they sent me, BUT, Safari message says
I have cleaned the cache, reset Safari and called American Express (they have no idea why this is happening) I can get on their regular site…and al lothers
    What now?
    Safari can’t find the server.
Safari can’t open the page “http://email.americanexpress.com/a/hBODUZAAQB6FsB8TrbMNsoagO.AQB6FsCL/axp1Safari can’t find the server “email.americanexpress.com”.

The IP address for email.americanexpress.com is - 74.127.10.68
At least that's what it resolved to for me. I too get promos through email for them that require you to perform actions through custom web links (email.americanexpress.com) and it works just fine through my GMail account. So it's either an ISP issue (unlikely) or the link got modified by GMail somehow to where it does not work properly.
As Niel suggested, AMEX will need to support this.
