Ok, here are the steps I took when performing my iOS 5 update on my Verizon iPhone 4.
I have a Macbook Pro (2008). I had upgraded to OSX Lion about 3 months ago. The FIRST thing I did was upgrade my iTunes to the latest version. If you check the specs for iOS 5 update, it says it needs iTunes 10.5 to run. So, I downloaded the iTunes update directly from the apple website.
After this was completed, I checked for any and all upgrades for OSX Lion and discovered there were 2 available to me, so I downloaded those (which took about 20 minutes from start of download to reboot time.)
Now at this point I had waited over 24 hours to upgrade to iOS 5 because of the sheer amount of traffic I'm sure the servers were getting. My first step after I plugged my phone in to update was to BACK IT UP!
When iTunes prompted me to download and update I simply chose to DOWNLOAD ONLY. After the download process was complete (about 10 minutes,) I backed up my phone one more time.
At this point I decided to update the phone. Now the process in and of itself took between 1 and 2 hours. I have a lot of apps and that process seemed to take the longest to restore (about 45 minutes.) Not once did my phone freeze or lock in any way and my phone works fine running the iOS 5 software. Nothing was lost, and everything on my phone was restored completely.
These were my steps in updating to iOS 5. I'm only submitting my helpful hints and this is what worked for me.
**HERE'S THE CATCH** b/c let's face it, there's ALWAYS a catch!
I had a phone issue BEFORE the update. My phone would not allow me to hear through the speaker the sounds of incoming voices nor could I hear anyone while making a call. I could only hear people who I called or who called me when the phone was on speaker mode. I thought that maybe upgrading to iOS 5 would fix the issue. After the update, I did any and all tips for fixing the issue including restoring the phone completely. After talking with Verizon they're sending me a "replacement" a.k.a refurbished phone. This is not satisfactory to me in any way, so a good friend who works for the local Apple store here in Cincinnati told me to bring the phone in w/ the original receipt (the phone is almost 4 months old,) and they would replace it with a new one. Kudos to Apple if this is the case.
Issue 2, could not connect with iCloud and I'll just chalk it up to server overload.
Hopefully this helps anyone in any way. As I said before I had no problems and I just took a few extra steps in the process. iOS 5 is really some nifty software and I'm really digging the iMessage feature.
To anyone having difficulties and issues, I'm truly sorry and hope you all get it taken care of. Have a good one!

If you cannot wait:
download the iOS5.0.1 file directly to your PC (~700MB), if that works better, connect the iPhone and Alt+click on the "Update" button, choose the newly downloaded file.
If you cannot wait at all, do the update on the iPhone itself (~38MB), but you still have to download the iOS full file to your PC, otherwise it will not be there when one time you need to restore: copy it to
for XP:
Documents and Settings\<User>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
for W7:
Users\<User>\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Software Updates
You throw awy the downloaded when after a time you are sure that everything is OK and the full iOS stays in the Updates folder.

    I had recently upgraded my 4S to iOS 6.1.2. All was well except Facetime and iMessage. For "Waiting for Activation" under the iMessage setting, this is what I did after 2 days of waiting:
    Plugged in to PC
    backed up contacts etc on iTunes
    Reset the iphone from settings>general>reset>erase all data and settings
    Set up the phone as new
    after setting up restored from back up on iTunes
    iMessage working!
    Oh and first it was working from the emails i set up. I had to uncheck all emails from Settings>Messages>Send and receive, to make iMessages shift to my phone number.
    Also in my experience saying "OK" or "Cancel" to "Carrier may charge for an SMS" did not make a difference.

    Here are Apple Steps for Error 21:
    This error typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. FollowTroubleshooting security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, these errors may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
    My additional advice:
    Also Error 21 can occur with DFU Mode Restore, try Recovery Mode Restore. Restart computer. Open iTunes on computer. Connect iPhone to computer. Hold both home and power buttons until iTunes recognizes iPhone in Recovery Mode. This usually takes about 20 seconds of holding both buttons. Click Restore button of iTunes.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
    How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

    Logically, because unlike you I do not keep my cellular data on at all times as I do not have an unlimited data plan. I only turn on cellular data when I am on the go and I do not have access to a wifi network. Therefore my need for a button in control center that turns on cellular data. And this would be very usefull to other iPhone users outside the US and Canada, where unlimited cellular data plans are not so affordable.

    If you have any podcasts in your iTunes library you should see a Podcasts sync setting tab to the right when you connect your phone and click on its name on the left sidebar (see image below).  On this tab check to sync podcasts and sync your phone.

    Do you use popular hosts like; gmail, windows mail live or yahoo ? If it's your own / work domain, you might want to go to settimgs and re-enter your password under the outgoing mail server.

  • The iOS update methods I use for error free updates

    I hope this helps some folks. I am not saying this is the 100% tried and true method but I have upgraded quite a few iPhones and never experienced an error or issue upgrading the software when following below method.
    1) If iOS 4 or greater, double-tap Home button to bring up running app list and hold first app to get jiggling and kill all apps one at a time until task bar is blank.
    2) Put iPhone into Airplane mode. (this will ensure that an incoming phone call, text message or push message won't interrupt the update)
    3) Do a graceful power-off by holding Top sleep button until red "slide to power off" then slide to power phone off and allow phone to fully shut down.
    4) Now press and hold Top sleep button and Home button at same time and continue holding both. The phone will begin to boot and you will see Apple logo but while continuing to hold both buttons the Apple logo will eventually go away and phone will seem to power back off but KEEP HOLDING BOTH BUTTONS and phone will power up again and Apple logo will popup again. KEEP HOLDING BOTH BUTTONS and phone will power down for good this time. When you release both buttons the phone should stay powered off. If phone begins to boot/power up when releasing buttons, you have not held them long enough. (Note: This power off/reboot sequence is very handy to remember for when your iPhone starts acting weird.)
    5) Press Top sleep button to turn phone back ON.
    6) Hook to your computer and Sync with iTunes and also create a Backup of phone in iTunes.
    7) Now update your phone with the iOS update and it should run smoothly.

    The method i use is this, every new update apple comes out with, i always DFU mode my iphone, and do a clean install of the iOS. This to ensure that I don't get any problems when updating my iphone. I have done this all previous models and never had any issues.
    DFU will take some time but for me it's worth it. Airplane mode is a good way to this.

    An iPad 2 will do it...for awhile. Realize that it's seemingly on it's last legs as far as iOS updates go and performance will not be great enough for today's demanding games. Also realize that a big part of running apps smoothly is how much system RAM (the memory area that the apps actually run in) the device has. The iPad 2 has 512 MB which is adequate for most apps but not for some. The iPads above the iPad 2 all have 1 GB of system RAM and the iPad Air 2 has 2 GB.
    The time will come when the iPad 2 can no longer be updated past a certain iOS version (as the iPad 1 is) so it will be more difficult to keep up with apps that you want to be using. This will eventually happen to ALL devices so you'll have to judge if you want to be at the tail-end of iOS updates or at least have a bigger buffer with a newer iPad.

    You can try resetting your iPad by simultaneously pressing and holding the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until you see the Apple Logo. This can take up to 15 seconds so be patient and don't release the buttons until the logo appears.
    Try again to see if the problem persists.
