Perian for Panther

Anyone knows what's the last version of Perian for Panther? and where could I find it?
I'm re-installing OS X 10.3 Panther on an old iBook G3 500 MHz so I would like to have Perian on it.
Thanks for any info.

None. Every single version of Perian, including the earliest betas, requires Mac OS X 10.4 or newer.

  • Can anyone recommend a free maintenance utility for panther ?

I have an iBook running OS 10.3.5 Panther. It is not running as well as it used to despite clearing the hard drive of old files. I think it would benefit from some kind of a maintenance script utility that would clean and optimise the system. This is a spare computer that we use mostly for surfing, email and iTunes, my main computer is a newer Macbook. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good 3rd party downloadable utility for Panther, preferably free or shareware, that I could install and run periodically?

    Hi 12frets56!
"Can anyone tell me what "BSD Subsystem installed" means? .... How would I know if my iBook has this?"
BSD Subsystem is a Unix tool, and numerous applications require it to function.
If I find a more technical definition, I'll post it!
Unless you performed a custom install, and chose to not install it, the BSD subsystem is installed by default when you install Mac OS X.
EDIT: Here ya go Berkeley Software Ditrubution!
Navigate to HD > Library > Receipts. If BSD is installed, the file BSD.pkg will be present.
If it is not installed, repost for further instruction.
As Texas Mac Man (Tom) posted, insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data.
Depending on Mac system usage habits, it is a general recommendation, to keep 10% to as much as 20%, of the Total capacity, available at all times.
Review the suggestions, in the documents that I have linked to below.
    Authored by Dr Smoke:
Problems From Insufficient RAM And Free Hard Disk Space
Freeing Space On Your Mac OS X Startup Disk
Have you ever run any routine Maintenance procedures, as suggested in the articles linked to below?
Mac OS X 10.3/10.4: System Maintenance, authored by Gulliver
Maintaining Mac OS X, authored by Dr Smoke
Is the Mac shutdown overnight, or does it run 24/7?
As posted, if you turn the Mac off nightly, the Background Maintenance Tasks, are never run.
The CRON Commands, can be run manually as well, using Terminal.
I also use MacJanitor when necessary.
INSTRUCTIONS TO RUN CRON MANUAL COMMANDS
    Quit all applications/programs.
Navigate to HD > Applications > Utilities.
Double click on Terminal, to open.
    At the prompt, type:
    sudo periodic daily
    Press Return.
Enter your Admin password when prompted, then press Return.
This will execute the daily script that is sheduled to run every night.
When completed, repeat this procedure, but change the command to:
    sudo periodic weekly
This one rebuilds a database or two, and usually takes somewhat longer to complete. It is scheduled to run once a week.
    Repeat again, with command:
    sudo periodic monthly
Or they can all be run in one pass, which is preferable, with this command:
    sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
When the tasks complete, and return to the prompt, you may quit Terminal.
Restart the Mac, and run Repair Permissions.
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk in the left column.
    2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
Rerun RP, until the only messages reported, are listed here Spurious Permissions Errors Using: 10.3.x, authored by Michael Conniff.
When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".
After you have done some Spring Cleaning, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.

  • Can't get to the installation window for Panther 10.3 upgrade

    Hello all, thanks for reading,
    Here's the deal:
I have an iMac, 500 Mhz, G3, 128 RAM that originally has Mac OS 9 built into it. Recently (a day or two ago), I wanted to format my computer because it was giving me too much trouble (a message saying that there wasn't enough memory kept appearing and askign me to quit an application to free some up), so I introduced the Mac OS 9 restoration disk and initialized my HD.
Everything went well, I was able to re-install the OS 9 and the necessary upgrades (up to 9.2.2) so that I could re-install my Panther 10.3 OS. However, when I reboot the computer with the installation disk in (so as to get to the installation window) it hangs when it reaches the white screen with the grey apple in the middle and the spinning thing on the bottom. It does not freeze up, 'cause you can see that the spiral still goes round and round, but disk activity ceases and it does not progress further than that (I have left it up to an hour in that state and nothing happens).
What can be my problem? The disk is in good conditions, and it is not the driver because I can run any other cd and it even reads the Panther disks (all of the 3)..... please help!
    Thank you.
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.3)   128 RAM - 30 Gb HD - 500 Mghz - G3 PowerPC

    Psike:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
To install Panther your computer will need to meet the minimum system requirements for Panther. Your RAM seems to be very marginal and I recommend that you upgrade your RAM to at least 256 MB or better still max it out to 1 GB.
You will need to purchase the Full Retail version of Panther. Be aware that Computer specific or upgrade versions should be avoided since they are optimized for the computer to which they are specific and will therefore very likely cause problems during or after installation. On the legal side, it may be a violation of the Software License Agreement which statesThis License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single computer at a time. This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time...If you do not have a Full Retail Version you can purchase universal installer Panther disks, guaranteed to install, from applerescue.
In terms of your specific problem. Here's what I suggest:
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
After disk has been repaired, with Disk Utility still launched and in the First Aid tab:
    Click Repair Disk Permissions button.
Quit Disk Utility and open installer.
    Select install option.
You may wish to Customize by deselecting Foreign Language Translations, unless you need it, and Additional Printer Drivers. This saves some disk space.
    Proceed with installation.
    After restart and set up:
    Restart computer
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
    Repair Disk Permissions (as before)
Go to Apple Menu > Software Update
    Install all updates
    Repair Disk Permissions again.
Please post back with questions or comments.
    Good luck.

  • Safari for Panther 1.3.2

Is 1.3.2 the latest Safari for Panther? It seems to have some issues supporting a number of Java drop-down menus that seem to be relitively straight forward and work in every other browser — including Safari for 10.4.
In theory the latest safari browser, weather it be for os x 10.3 or 10.4 should work the same, no?
Any insight PLEASE. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Paul
Yes, Safari 1.3.2 is the latest one for Panther.
I got Tiger, so I can't really comment on how drop-downs work in 1.3.2, but if you post some url's where you see the problem & maybe a screenshot or two....others here may well be able to confirm what you've found.

  • Anyone know of a DWF file viewer for Panther?

Hello! Does anyone know of a free DWF file viewer for Panther? I need to regularly use a DWF Autodesk cad file and need a "read only" file viewer. Autodesk is working on an OSX viewer but haven't released it yet. Thanks, Tom

    Hi Tom,
You give to easily up ..... have a look into this link.

  • Quicktime 7.x.x Full Install for Panther 10.3.9

    Hello
As my PowerMac G5 just blew a power supply I had to dig out my old B&W G3 which has been updated with a G4 550MHz processor, running Panther. I thought I would update Quicktime Pro 6 to Quicktime 7 fot Panther. I was unable to view my tutorial videos so this was my motivation.
I downloaded QT 7.5 for Panther but after installing, rebooting, & repairing permissions QT bounces a couple of times in the dock, the beachball spins, and the drive whirs like crazy but to no avail. Quicktime is seen by Force Quit, which I have to do but Software Update does not see it.
I've since tried installing v7.4.1, 7.3.x & 7.1 using Pacifist but nothing has changed.
I suspect that the problem occured because I went from v6 to v7 without a full install for v7. In any event does anyone know where I might be able to download a full install of Quicktime 7 for Panther ?
    Thanks
    Tim

    John:
Panther is a very stable OS, and although Tiger offers some new features you can likely live very well withough spotlight and widgets. I run Tiger on my G3 Pismo, but hesitated a long time before I did, because I liked Panther so well.
I concur with donny, that staying where you are is not a bad idea, especially if you don't have the money to spare. Also, whether you upgrade your OS or not you'd get a better payoff putting a bit of money in upgrading your RAM.
    Good luck.

  • End of support for Panther?

    Hi,
I am looking for information as when does Apple plan to discontinue its support for Panther? Any information or relevant link for end of support for product is welcome.
    Thanks in advance,

      Mac OS X (10.3.4)

    asin,
It's "support" has reached its conclusion with the release of the last 10.3.9 update.
The operating system will not be updated past that.
I recommend downloading the latest update, as I see you are using 10.3.4, (10.3.9 Combo) and I think you will see a marked improvement to your OS. Remember to Repair Permissions from Disk Utility before and after any OS update.
    good luck,

  • Is there an equivalent of COCONUT battery for Panther USERS?

I've saved a lot to buy my PB a new battery, and I want the most out of it as much as possible. I've been hearing about this COCOBattery that enables US to determine the number of cycles that the battery had already been charged/discharged (not sure) and some other stuffs for battery maintenance. I wonder if there was anything like this for PANTHER? Coz from my search, it is only for TIGERS.
On top of all these, I would like to make sure if APPLE JAPAN, has sold me a good battery. Since it has a 1 year warranty, I could use the time to really figure out if the battery serves its factory specifications, and I need an equivalent of that COCOBattery for my Panther. Thanks!

Battorox will run under Panther and is available at http://www.branox.com/Battorox/Battorox.html
You may have read Apple's note on maintaining notebook batteries already, which is at http://www.apple.com/batteries/notebooks.html. Note that Apple says a properly maintained battery should retain 80% of it's capacity after 300 charge/discharge cycles.

  • Software updates still available for panther?

My old mac needs updating, and wondered if there are still issued software updates for panther?

No. If you're running 10.3.9 that's it as far as Panther goes.  You can check using Software Update but I'm not sure if Apple has completely not bothered with maintaining that if Panther calls home.  I turned off SU for Tiger ages ago.
Apple typically only maintains updates for the last two versions of the operating system, and since we're about to move to 10.8, 10.3 is far behind.
The only thing open to you is to update to either Tiger or Leopard (10.5) if your computer can handle it, but even then you're still not going to see support any more.  10.5 isn't too, too far behind but we're also both using PPC Macs which means even if something comes out that runs on 10.5 it likely will not run on 10.5 on a PPC Mac.
If you do want to update to Tiger or leopard it will also cost you since they are both still in demand and Apple no longer sells them.  I'd say with an older machine it may not be economical to invest the $150 you might have to pay for either system version.

  • ITunes 7.7.1 for Panther

I have just got hold of a iMac G3, it's in really great nick, so happy with it. I did a full system reinstall which all went fine but the version of iTunes I am now running is even more outdated than it needs to be. I've been searching the web for a while trying to find a download of iTunes 7.7.1 for Panther 10.3 with no avail. Anyone got any ideas or even got a copy they could create a link for.
    Thanks

  • Where can I find Safari for Panther?

I've found the Safari 1.3.1 Updater but that won't allow me to re-install Safari (only update).
The problem is I inadvertently installed Safari 3.1.1 on my G4 10.3.9 Mac (don't ask me how the installer package allowed that to be done) and that Safari 3.1.1 wouldn't open. Now I don't have a functioning Safari Browser at all.
Where can I find a full Safari for Panther?

Note that you can't simply reinstall Safari from the Panther Install disc as a fix for this problem - you need to do a full Archive & Install, or follow a more complex series of steps. This is because the Safari 3.x updater also upgraded the Mac OS Webkit to versions that are incompatible with Panther (this affects Mail, iChat, etc.).
The more complex series of steps is outlined in the first link, with some additional helpful links to Safari 1.x updates in the second link:

  • A tip for Panther users having trouble with Safari!

I have found it! I have found a browser that works with all websites I've used in the last couple of days. The browser works on my iBook G4 with OS X Panther and on my 9-year-old iMac G3 (bought the year they came out with colors other than Bondi Blue -- I own lime) that I upgraded from OS 9 to OS X Panther about five years ago.
Problem: Neither computer is able to use a Safari version that is newer than 1.3.2 due to OS and hardware compatibility issues. That STUNK because Safari was becoming more and more incompatible with many of my most frequented websites.

Several people suggested various things to me, but the best suggestion came from Yahoo! (My husband couldn't access his Yahoo! email account on my iMac and Yahoo! gave him suggestions to try.)
    Here is the SOLUTION: SeaMonkey!
I'm using the only version of SeaMonkey the website offers for Macs, which is, I think, 1.12 or something like that. (I'm on my husband's PC right now so I can't check.) It's made by Mozilla who also makes Firefox, so you can have that groovy personal toolbar at the top that keeps links to your favorite "Favorites" right up at the top of the screen. (I love that toolbar on my husband's PC, which runs Firefox.)
Browsers I had tried but that didn't work perfectly with all sites:
    Opera (8.54 and 9.6)
    iCab
Firefox (I couldn't even get it to open after I downloaded it!)
IE (Always avoid this browser if you can help it.)
I hope this is helpful to you

I use Camino on our few remaining Panther machines and its overall feel is much more like Safari, but opens sites that defy Safari. It's also a Mozilla product and much "leaner" than some of the other Mozilla browsers, another factor that makes it nice for older Macs.
    Camino is here:
    http://caminobrowser.org/
and still runs on OS 10.3.9. Firefox ran on Panther until they hit version 3; that's why it didn't work for you.

  • Partition for Panther an iChat 2.1

I am one of those who has had lots of trouble with Tiger and iChat 3x. I cannot connect with my son who uses a PC and AIM. I have been able to video chat using Panther and iChat 2.1. After upgrading, that no longer works. I have followed lots of the advice on the iChat 3 discussions, done tests, etc. I get stuck with higher speed PC's, as I can connect with slower PC's. (Tested with James Weston.)
I have reverted back to Panther from Tiger on my iBook and can again video chat using 2.1. I want to partition my HD on my iMac, with a smallish partition for OS 10.3.9 and iChat 2.1 only.
What size partition would be adequate, using it only for iChat?
    Any advice?
    Thanks.

    4Gb will do it.

  • Word Processor for Panther

Hi, I'm asking this question for my MIL who owns an older iBook with Panther.... Is there a way to get an older/compatible version of iWork for her machine at this point in time? Or is there another word processor program that we can try? Obviously, as it's been several years since she's had the iBook, she doesn't use such programs often, but she wants one now. The iWork that is available now is only for 10.4.10 and higher.
    Any suggestions welcomed!
    Thanks,
    Aviva

You could look for a used copy of iWork '05 or '04 on eBay. Either should work with Panther. Or you could look for a copy of AppleWorks (PPC) which also works on that model with Panther.
The commercial product, Papyrus, is an integrated productivity application that will work with Panther - VersionTracker or MacUpdate. There is also the free open source integrated suite, NeoOffice Aqua, that is available for PPC Macs and works with Panther or later. It is similar to MS Office.
