Period Key Causes Return

This is similar to a previous post, but no one has posted a solution.
"This may be strange, but when I type a period "." strange things happen in Mail and Safari! It is as if when typing a period it is like hitting the return key! Forinstance, if I'm typing a web address in on Safari, as soon as I type a period in the address bar, Safari goes and tries to look up the address before I finish.
Or, in Mail, when I type a period in the body of the message, the cursor moves down a line like I hit the return key. It even happens while I type this message and it ONLY happens with the period key. This is frustrating! Does anyone have ideas as to how to fix this? I have all upgrades installed and my powerbook generally is running great except for this. Help?"

I am running 10.3.9, sorry I haven't updated my signature line. As far as I know I have everything "up-to-date". I am thinking that after using it, the keyboard may be on the way out?
Thanks.

  • Keyboard/period key issue

Guys - my full-stop/period key has  started randomly misbehaving -  when I press it, a dictionary option comes up!!! I've looked at any possible keyboard shortcut aberrations, but no luck so far. Any clues? Cheers

    Hello
Im not Tecra A11 owner but on my other Toshiba notebooks I never had a problem with the keyboard. Every key will recognized properly if I press it.
I assume your Tecra A11 is pretty new and so its still under warranty. Therefore contact nearest authorized service provider. The guys can replace the keyboard because there are no single keys available.
But dont be worry about this, this is covered by warranty. :)

  • Primary Key Source returning improper value

    Hi All,
I have a tabular updateable form.
    My Primary Key field has
Primary key Source Type : Custom PL/SQL Function
    Primary key Source : RETURN (EB_PACKAGE.GET_COD_NUM (:P4_CTY_TYPE));
My function is in a package and is executing properly and i have checked it.
I have an Item on that page as P4_CTY_TYPE whose value i'm passing to obtain the Primary key.
But my problem is the function does not return a proper value, i feel the value being passed for the function is always same. Why is proper value not being passed.
Hopefully I have explained my problem, if not let me know so.
    Hoping for the solution.
    Thanks n Regards
    Arif

    Hi Ravi,
Thanks for the reply and sorry for late reply.
The session value for P4_CTY_TYPE is ok.
P4_CTY_TYPE is a Select List with Submit.
I have a Report and there's a link which changes the value of P4_CTY_TYPE or can be changed by itself as it is a Select List.
Depending upon the value of P4_CTY_TYPE I'm displaying records in a Tabular form with Insert, Update and Delete facilities.
Now Suppose the Value for P4_CTY_TYPE is 10 at the start of the session then the function works fine and it always does for this value, when i select other value for P4_CTY_TYPE say 20. The value returned by my function is as if the parameter value being passed to the function EB_PACKAGE.GET_COD_NUM (:P4_CTY_TYPE)) is 10 and not 20. This is what i mean by function does not return a proper value.
If any more clarification required do let me know.
    Thanks Once again.
    Arif

  • Period key stopped working

Is there a setting that alters the period key? Only seems to work when pressing the function key or when using num lock F6 key. Makes error sound if presed alone

Open the Speech pane of System Preferences and check whether either the listening key or the speech key has become set to the period; if so, change the setting.

  • My period key doesn't work; until I get it fixed, can I create a shortcut that makes a period?

    thank you

How you make the period does not matter.  But you must type more than just = to get the change, like = plus space. It works fine for me with OO, with "while typing" also checked in Format > Autocorrect.

  • "DELETE" key to "RETURN"

On a new MacBook Air I'm using the Ukelele key layout for Devanagari to map Dvorak. But when I was on the Aluminum 3G I was able to only switch the "DELETE" key with the "RETURN" key through the system somewhere. Ukelele has maybe updated itself and I was able to switch them there. But the end result is that both keys act as a "DELETE" key. That seems to mean that the "RETURN" key was changed properly but the "DELETE" key cannot be changed.
I found "KeyRemap4MacBook" so I downloaded and Installed it. It did not offer the switch I need. So on the forum I found "DoubleCommand" and still could not make it do what I wanted.
Then the system crashed for the first time and shut itself down. On restart the keyboard didn't function. I uninstalled "KeyRemap4MacBook" and still it was not working. (try typing your password when the key layout is not functioning) Then I uninstalled  "DoubleCommand" and on restart my keyboard works!
Anyone have any ideas for remapping the "DELETE" key to "RETURN" ?

You cannot do that with UKELELE, because this beautiful app does not change system settings. You have two ways to deal with this:
    1. Apple’s settings in System Preferences / Keyboard / Modifer Keys
    2. and / or install a pretty utility called DoubleCommand, free. This one can offer many settings. I use it for changing right Enter key on my MacBook into Option key, just because I use many keybaord layouts, and also need dead keys very frequently.
Give a try, you will be satisfied.

Iam very confused about the use of the key word return. I understand its functionality when it returns some value. But what's the case when we use it in the following way:

  • Black coating on period key cracking off

i have had my macbook air since 2 weeks after they came out... around last november. recently, i noticed a crack in the top of my period key, right in the middle. today, it started to grow, and i can now see silver color peeking through from underneath the the black coating on the keys. it seems that when i type, my ring finger is tapping in just the right way so that my nail is slowly chipping it away. i think it may derive from... you know... typing, and pressing the key so hard, because it is punctuation. as i type now i do notice that i do press that button very hard, and with my nail, but i guess i tend to hit with my nail on the entire lower row.
does anyone have any suggestions on what i can do to prevent it from continuing to crack? i doubt that apple will do anything to help me, i just would like for it to not get worse.

  • Caps Lock Keyboard "G" key causes hanging notes

When I use Logic Pro 8s Caps Lock Keyboard the "G" key causes hanging notes. The only way I've found to end the hanging note is to start and stop the sequencer. This behaviour happens when auditioning instrument sounds and in Record or Record Ready mode.
It's not a mechanical problem, as the "G" key doesn't cause multiple entries in text documents etc when pressed and released quickly. It only seems to be misbehaving inside of Logic itself, when using the Caps Lock Keyboard.
Is anyone else having this trouble?
Does anyone know why it happens and/or how to fix it?

    can someone help please?
I opened up a new song, blank, and the caps lock keyboard worked fine.
seems to be a problem with older songs, which leads me to think maybe its a setting i have changed, ie when playing with uc33 midi contoller.
    thankyou

  • Why findByAltKey(String keyName, Key key, int) returns a RowIterator object

    Hi All,
I was thinking that why findByAltKey(String keyName, Key key, int) returns a RowIterator object and not Row object because alternate key is a candidate key and is unique so only one record should be there for a particular alternate key.
    Thanks
    Puneet

findByKey (which you could also use) returns Row[]. findByAltKey is just a special version of findByKey that returns a RowIterator.
Probably it's not going to change for historical reasons.
Plus, the Key you use doesn't have to be a full key - it can be a partial one, meaning that you can match more than one row.

  • Macbook Pro, OSX 10.9.4: a key (or Return) sometimes repeats endlessly, with a plunking sound. No Option but to shut down ASAP.

    Repeating key(s)

    Hello suzannefromkatsushika-ku,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
Please follow the troubleshooting below for troubleshooting issues with keys on your keyboard:
Some keys don't work as expected
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Speech.
Click the Text to Speech tab.
If "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" is enabled, the key or key combination set to speak text cannot be used for other purposes or used to type text--click Set Key and change it to a less-commonly used key combination (try to use modifier keys such as Shift, Command, Option, and Control). Or, disable the "Speak selected text when the key is pressed" option.
Click the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane in System Preferences, then click the Keyboard tab.
Make sure that Slow Keys is turned off. With Slow Keys on, you need to press a key for a longer period of time for it to be recognized.
In the Accessibilty or Universal Access pane, click the Mouse tab, and make sure Mouse Keys is turned off. With Mouse Keys enabled, you cannot use the Numeric Keypad to enter numbers--instead the keypad moves the pointer (cursor). (There is an option to enable Mouse Keys with five presses of the Option key; you may want to turn that option off to avoid accidentally enabling it.) If Mouse Keys is enabled and you are using a keyboard with no numeric keypad or Num Lock function, see Unable to type while Mouse Keys is enabled in Mac OS X.
If the function keys on the top row of the keyboard are not working as expected, see Mac OS X: How to change the behavior of function keys.
If the issue persists, use Keyboard Viewer to help isolate the issue:
Click the Language & Text pane (Mac OS X v10.6) or International pane (Mac OS X v10.5.8 or earlier) in System Preferences.
Click the Input Sources tab (or Input Menu tab in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
Click the Keyboard & Character Viewer "On" checkbox to select it (click the Keyboard Viewer "On" checkbox in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier).
From the Input (flag) menu, choose Show Keyboard Viewer.
If the keyboard is connected and detected by OS X, the keys you type will highlight in the Keyboard Viewer window. Open TextEdit (or any text application), and try to type something using the keys that were previously not responding to see if they highlight in Keyboard Viewer.
Start from the Mac OS X Install Disc, choose Terminal from the Utilities menu and test the keys which were previously not working.  If the keys work while started from the Install disc, then the keyboard itself is working correctly.  Use How to troubleshoot a software issue to isolate the software issue that may be causing the keys to not respond.
One or more keys on the keyboard do not respond

  • Submitting a form with enter key causing strange problems

I am having a very strange problem with a webapp I am currently developing. I am using JSF 1.2 along with Facelets and RichFaces. I have coded a workflow/wizard 4-step process, and on some pages I have 4 submit buttons that all call different actions on the page. The users thought it would be useful to have the enter key submit the form, so I followed some online resources to trap a keypress using javascript, looking for the enter keycode and calling document.getElementById("elementName").click(). This works fine most of the time. Sometimes, though, it seems as if an entire new session is being created, and odd behavior starts happening. For example, my page will only include 2 of the 4 facelets on the screen -or- I will get NullPointerExceptions for objects that I know have been created in the session bean I am currently using -or- I will get a duplicate form Id after trying to re-submit the page. Could the javascript click simulation not be submitting all of the form elements or is the enter key also acting like its default action (the form submission) in addition to the "click"? I'm really at my wit's end here (plus it's nearly 3 AM, that never helps things). All of the buttons being clicked are standard h:commandButtons. There is some setTimeout logic included to disable the buttons on the page to prevent double clicks (I cannot disable them onsubmit because disabled buttons don't pass the right values, perhaps that's causing it, but if so, clicking the buttons with the mouse would cause that issue too, right?)
I am not posting the code (yet), but if anyone wants to take a look see and see if I am doing something really abhorrently wrong, I'm more than willing to, I'm just curious if anyone has had problems regarding javascript submission of forms via the click() method. Clicking the button does not exhibit this type of behavior. Just as a side note: I am doing different things with the enter key depending if a modal window is open (the enter key closes the modal if it's up, and if not, it submits the form via a button click).
Any help is much appreciated, if anyone has any inkling about where I should start looking for answers it would be really helpful.
    Thank you.

You need to suppress the event handling after programmatically clicking the button.
