Periodic lockups in OSX 10.5

Recently I have been experiencing lockups that seem to last about 10-15 seconds. During that time, I get the spinning ball, and only the application I am using seems to lock up. I mainly notice it while playing World of Warcraft, or when watching videos. Other apps continue to work, like iTunes and Skype. I saw another post that seemed to be related to Spotlight and FileVault, but I am not using FileVault, and never have. I have 2 other friends that are also noticing this behavior recently also. Where should I look to troubleshoot it?

I'm having the same issue, I have a Black Macbook, 2 Gb Ram, 250Gb in the hard drive, two operating systems, but the problem started since the update to 10.5.7.
Now that you mention it, it seems to be occurring just when I fast-switch users in the computer, even after closing all the opened sessions and then opening a new one.

  • Keyboard lockups with OSX 10.8.2

After the 10.8.2 update, keyboard input is hanging intermittently on my 2011 MacBook Air. It occurs in several applications (have tested with Safari and App Store) and often when switching windows or input fields. The keyboard input just stops working for a few seconds, then some of the typed text is input at the cursor.
Also, sometimes when opening a new tab in Safari, a window pops up complaining about a bluetooth headset. Maybe this is linked somehow?
    Anyone else experiencing the same?

I've been following this discussion due to keyboard problem after update to 10.8.2.
Using original USB keyboard (MB110LL/A) with keypad supplied with 2008 iMac.
Problem: number keys (only on the keypad) fail after login, after updating to 10.8.2. Keypad numbers work as usual when entering system password at startup.
Solution: tested keyboard at Apple Store & it works fine on their 10.8 demo machines. Purchased new keyboard to try (MB110LL/B), & that solves problem. After 4+ years, original needed retirement anyway.
Refer to "Difference between MB110LL/A and MB110LL/B" discussion in Apple Store,
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB110LL/B/apple-keyboard-with-numeric-keypad?f node=56
Time will tell if others with older iMacs encounter the same problem.

  • 9.0.3 build 1107 Lockup

Excellent IDE but will periodically lockup and will slow entire system down. I went to check for updates and can't connect to OTN because the error says I don't have a OTN account, which I do have. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks, I hate to admit what speed my connection is but it's late here and should done downloading in the AM. Do you know if there is an upgrade option for existing installations or is this going to be a reinvent of the wheel?
    Thanks again

  • Strange green lines with ATI 4850 iMac in Aperture, then crash.

Well, I have been running my iMac, 3GHZ, ATI 4850 for about a week now. I have had 2 lockups in OSX, 1 in boot camp and 1 graphics crash.
In OSX, all the crashes/lock-ups happen after I get these strange green lines, artifacts, that run across part of my screen. They change in length but generally always run horizontal. I can seem to find a way to post pictures here, but I have a couple screen grabs here:
    http://atothe420k.blogspot.com/
Since I have to power off in the middle of Aperture, I am also getting corrupt databases, which take forever to rebuild.

Well, I called into Apple Care, after my machine crashed again twice today, once in a web browser and once under EveOnline. The person said to download and use some fan control software. It installed, but didn't do much, couldn't get it to change fan speed or anything else.
I installed iStatPro, which is great, and kept checking the temp of the ATI card, it would crash when the temp was up around 65-70 degrees C. Not sure if that is high or not.

  • Xmonad freeze from full pipe

    Hi Everyone,
I've been experiencing periodic lockups after longer periods of use in XMonad and have found the problem to be directly related to this issue: http://www.haskell.org/haskellwiki/Xmon … _frozen.21
The project issue page for this problem is quite old https://code.google.com/p/xmonad/issues/detail?id=91 however the issue is still present (at least on my machine here).
I've solved the issue for myself by kicking a script off that dumps the content of the full pipe to /dev/null when xmonad starts, but - is this really a solution though? Am I breaking something else by sending the content in this pipe out?
    Cheers.

Do you know which version of iMovie you are using. If not, I'll try to describe it based on iMovie '11 and you can see if your controls look the same.
In the Project Browser on the still image where you have Ken Burns enabled (it will be disabled on the preceeding still image) There will be a little Gear icon on the image that you can click that will bring up a contextual menu, like this:
Choose Cropping, Ken Burns & Rotation. You will now get an editor window in the Preview area that allows you to set the Ken Burns effect using a Green rectangle and a Red Rectangle. Click on the Green border to select it and pull the edges all the way out to the corners of the image. Now move the Red rectangle first by click the red border. Reposition it and pull the corners in to the point where you want the picture to be magnified. Then in the upper right hand corner of the Preview window click the Blue button labeled Done.

  • My macbook pro's screen constantly goes dim. I have set the energy saver settings for battery to 7 mins but it goes dim if the period of inactivity is less than 7 mins. Please help.  MBP 13" OSX 10.6.8 (2011)

My macbook pro's screen constantly goes dim. I have set the energy saver settings for battery to 7 mins but it goes dim even if the period of inactivity is less than 7 mins. Please help.  MBP 13" OSX 10.6.8 (2011)

Doesn't sound like it.  It sounds like you're being logged-off.
Does your Mac go through the complete Restart cycle -- black screen, gray and/or blue screen momentarily, startup chime, etc?
If you're not sure, do a Restart just to watch the process; the next time the problem occurs, see if it's the same.
You need to know which it is, as these will have very different causes, and different places to look for a solution.

  • OSX 10.6.5 lockup

    Hello everyone,
I am a long time Mac user, but I seem to have stumbled upon a problem, and I cannot figure out what the problem is. I have a Mac mini that was recently updated to 10.6.5. It was workin fine for about a year and then after the 10.6.5 update, it began to lock up if left idle for longer periods o time (e.g. about 2 hours or more). It will become unresposive, and while the monitor will be on, the keyboard an mouse do nothing, the screen freezes at wherever it was - nothing happens, and i have to resort to a hard reset by holding the power button. I never had this problem with 10.6.4 and I haven't changed installed items at all. This is what has me stumped. I don't know where to start. I have checked the log files but found nothing of note in there.
I would appreciate any info on my problem or what could be causing it. If you need additional information regarding my problem, please ask me.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I would have to agree with bitman, a clean install of SL would be the faster option for you. But if you are to do that please make sure you have backup copies of all your files, even put some important files in the cloud as some data can go missing during this. I bet it has happened to a number of people, files going missing even tho they are backed up and dont forget hard drives fail.

  • Hard lockup after a period of time, can't nail down the cause

Hi, all.  New to the forum.  Thanks in advance for any time you spend helping me.  I hope I am able to get my problem outlined to you before I lock up.
I have the MSI Diamond Plus 939 board.  X2 4200+ sits in it, running at 2.2Ghz.  I don't overclock anything.    I have 2Gig of Kingston RAM running at the default values.  My video card is the 7900 GT running in the PCI-E slot.
I lock up after running anywhere from 5 minutes to 4 hours.  Once I lock up, and this is the strange part, the 4 green lights on the D-Bracket stay fully on at the next reboot attempt, and there's no post or video data being sent to the monitor at all.  I have to make repeated attempts to reset the system before the D-Bracket LEDs finally reset to red and begin cycling through on their way to handing everything off to the OS.  These lockups are OS-independent.  I have Vista and XP on two separate HDs.  The HD with XP is IDE and the one with Vista is SATA.  The IDE drive is my system drive, which has the file on it for dual-booting.  I lock up in either OS, and sometimes even while in the BIOS.
I changed my power supply and processor fan (in case it was power purity or heat related), and I've moved/changed cables and tried to eliminate known good items and so forth.
Just tell me what else you need from me and how to get it and I'll give it to you.  This locking up is seriously cramping my style.
    John

    All,
Here's something I came up with since my last post.  I ran dxdiag, and here's everything from it.  It's a lot, but better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it, right?    I snipped audio and video driver information where indicated in order to fit this into the post.

  • OSX Snow Leopard best ever, period!!!!

Seems like they are running around in circle but no good result, Yosemite looks and feels bad, I just keep my snow leopard installed!! Thanks for nothing Apple

Agreed.I am going back to Snow Leopard as well. Way too many bugs in Yosemite and little to no support.

  • File locking with OSX Server & Microsoft Word

We have a small office LAN based on a Airport Extreme bases station. Periodically Microsoft Word reports a break in connection to the shared folder where we store documents to get disconnected. When that happens and the user reconnects to the share, the user gets the file read-only message for the Word document that was open at the time.
I have found that in order to clear the read-only flag, I have to restart the server and open the Word file on the server with the ID of the user who was editing the file on the remote computer. Only that seems to clear the file locking that causes the file to be read-only.
I cannot figure out a less drastic way to release the lock file. I don't see any hidden temp files in the same folder as the document that is locked for editing found by ls -a or in the root direction of the shared folder in the .TemporaryItems/folders.<UID> that seems to be holding the lock.
I have run chflags nouchg <Word file> from Terminal, but that seems to have no effect either. I also used xattr to see if there were any locks held that way, but I don't see anything that way either.
File sharing to Macs only, which are configured just to use AFP through OSX Server.
Does anyone understand how the file locks of Word documents can be released directly with out restarting the server?
I should add that the underlying problems seems to be WiFi related. The behavior is that the WiFi connection seems to break long enough that the shared volumes disconnects. Outlook also causes a break. This behavior seems to have started with 10.9 and the purchase of new Retina Display MacBook Pros. I turned off AppNap on the Office applications but that is not clearly helpful. I also have been told the problem seems more likely to occur when Word is open in the background and another program like Outlook is in the foreground.
    Any suggestions appreciated.

Apple write an operating system and also produce file sharing software as part of that to be used as a file server. Apple provide documentation for third-party software developers on how they should write software to work with Apple's software and also give those developers early access to new versions so those third-party developers can test and if needed make adjustments and issue updates to cope with any Apple changes.
Some third-party developers are good at dealing with this, some are bad, and some totally ignore what Apple does and give the impression they don't care if their product works properly or not. I think we can all judge where Microsoft sits.
It appears Microsoft have never paid any attention in particular to how Apple expect file-locking to be handled when accessing files on a Mac server. There have been problems for years and years and years with Office. Two other problems I have seen which seem different to yours but probably related are -
With Office documents it is supposed to be possible for more than one person to edit the same file at the same time, consider it a miracle if this actually works
With Office in particular Word, there is an auto-save function, unfortunately the way this seems to be implemented it seems that Word creates a new temporary file each time it auto-saves the document and keeps all the previous temporary files open still, this eventually means potentially over a hundred temporary files are open - just for one Word document and you can then hit a limit on the total number of files you are allowed to have open at the same time. At this point further auto-saves fail, and you also encounter great difficulty doing a real full save of the document.
I do not hold Apple completely blameless over this issue, it is likely their file-locking implementations change too often, and have inadequate documentation, however even considering this a company the size of Microsoft with the amount of sales (and profit) they derive from Office for the Mac has no excuses at all for failing to put the effort in to resolve any such clearly critical problems.
We could go on and on about other areas where Microsoft don't play by the (software) rules. Even in Windows Office does not obey the standard print dialog rules Microsoft specified themselves!
Unfortunately not only is Office for Mac upgraded infrequently, but even when new paid for upgrades are released Microsoft have a history of still not fixing bugs. It goes without saying that a mere free update is even less likely to actually fix a bug, typically such free updates only address security issues. The next version of Office is going to be Office for Mac 2014 see http://www.macworld.com/article/2106643/microsoft-will-release-a-new-version-of- office-for-mac-this-year.html
One area I confidently predict Microsoft not to resolve in Office for Mac 2014 is that fact that Word for Mac still does not support right-to-left languages like Hebrew and Arabic. This is despite the fact that OS X itself has supported this for years and years, and despite the fact other Mac programs support this including the free TextEdit and Pages - both of which can read Word files. Some people may remember that at one point the Israeli Government temporarily banned all Microsoft software over this issue. See http://apple-beta.slashdot.org/story/03/10/15/2215249/israeli-government-suspend s-microsoft-contracts This issue goes back over TEN years!!
I note that Microsoft has now taken their OfficeForMac blog offline, probably due to the weight of criticisms. I would not say it is due to out-right anti-Microsoft hate, that war ended long ago. We just want products that work. I myself do use Microsoft products, even at home - where they are the best solution, so I use Microsoft Media Center for example. Sadly this is now being neglected by Microsoft.

  • Is Safari the problem, or is it OSX?

Can anyone tell me why, when I select Safari and type Cmd+n (for a new window), it spins up BOTH my hard drives when they're asleep? I could see spinning up your startup drive since Safari was written by morons who made it impossible to select RAMdisk for the cache. But my 2nd physical drive..? Is this Safari, or is it OSX screwing up?
And for that matter, WHY the f-ck did it just spin down my startup drive and then *immediately* spin up BOTH of my hard drives..?? NO apps were running this time. Thanks.

Yes, it is OSX 10.4.11, and I have NO backup software running (OWC or anything else).
It also likes to spin up both physical hard drives periodically when i'm watching a movie, even if the movie is on a USB drive (i.e. not on an internal hard disk).

  • My iMac is getting really slow.  It used to boot in about 30 seconds, now it's over 3 minutes.  I am thinking I may backup photo's Videos and such and format the hard drives and re-install OSX.  Any thoughts on this?

This computer used to boot up in about 30 seconds, now it's minutes, programs are starting to freeze, or take a long time to boot.  I suspect it's bits and fragments from programs that I have used and deleted over the years, but are still floating around inside my iMac.  I really don't want to re-format and re-install OSX  but the lack of performance is finally starting to irritate me.  (Haveing switched from windows in 2009, I can tell you, I used to reformat and re-install windows about every 3 months because I liked that fresh fast boot up feel.)  Any advice is welcome.  Here's a printout from a program that lists everything using my system.
    Thanks.

In addition to Mike's suggestions,  you only have 4GB of RAM and Mavericks does use more RAM than other versions. You may also want to look at the apps that startup on login and the possiblity of upgrading RAM.

  • MacBook Air mid-2013 OSX 10.9.1 cannot connect to DVI Monitor

Does anyone else have this problem?  I've seen similar issues raised, but so far can't find a solution to my particular issue:
MacBook Air Mid 2013 (ordered Jan 2014)
    - 1.3GHz Intel Core i5
    - 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM
    - OSX 10.9.1 Mavericks.
When I connect my MacBook Air to any monitor (well, I've tried three monitors: Benq, NEC and Samsung) the monitor will not detect an attached computer. The MacBook also does not think it's connected to an external display.
If I connect via VGA cable, it works fine most of the time*, so the display port seems to work only for VGA and not DVI.
I am using mini display port adapters (DVI and VGA) purchased from the Apple Store.
The adapter for the mini display to DVI works fine, since I can get my 2009 MacBook unibody to connect to an external display via DVI without issue. So it's not the adapter, or the DVI cable.
I have tried resetting the System Management Controller for my MacBook air but it does not work.  No matter how many times I reset the computer (Hard reset, Soft power down, SMC reset) I cannot get it to connect via DVI.
Has anyone experienced this issue, or seen a resolution for it?
*The only other symptom I get periodically, is that after being disconnected from a VGA monitor, the computer will periodically (about 2/5 times) not connect to the VGA monitor either without a reboot.   However it will connect most of the time, and ALL of the time after a reboot.
    Thank you

Thanks themachead: I have tried the adaptors on different macs, as I indicated in my post.  The adaptor works fine with a different mac
Yes, I have also tried starting up with the monitor connected, and disconnected.
I just got off the phone with Apple Care. They couldn't solve my issue through normal means, but during one attempt, we closed my MacBook Air while it was connected to the external display, with my Magic Mouse and Apple Keyboard connected via Bluetooth.  The external monitor did not come on.  However when I opened my Macbook Air's screen, we saw that my Mac had crashed and prompted me to reboot. When it did, the external monitor worked.  I have been able to disconnect and reconnect the monitor and it seems to be working now.   I will see what happens after a few attempts.

  • How do I automatically log the battery percentage and time on my Retina Macbook Pro to an excel spreadsheet? (OSX 10.9.4)

    Hello! So I own a 13" rMBP, and I'm running OSX 10.9.4.
How do I log my battery percentage with the date, probably down to the hour, preferably to an Excel file?
I want to track the rate at which my battery discharges, so that in the future I can compare the present rate of discharge with the past and see exactly how much my battery has deteriorated by. I'll take averages over long periods of time to account for, e.g. the fact that watching Netflix drains my battery faster than editing an essay. I also want a solution that uses negligible power in the background.
I've spent hours looking for an app that both calculates the rate of discharge and keeps all data, but I haven't found any. Eventually I decided that hopefully it isn't too difficult to write an AppleScript or something that simply logs the system clock and battery percentage in tandem every hour or so.
    Thank you for your time!
    Herman

    What Barney said.
Here is the script to create a CSV text file with
    Date
    Time
Current Battery Percentage as an integer
    #!/bin/bash
    batterycsv="$HOME/battery.csv"
    export GREP_OPTIONS="--color=never"
    # if you want the percentage sign too, exclude the second egrep
    battpct=$(pmset -g ps | egrep -o "(\d+)%" | egrep -o "\d+")
    datetime=$(date "+%Y-%m-%d %H:%M")
    printf "%s,%s,%s\n" $datetime $battpct >> $batterycsv
Output on a fully charged MacBook Air to battery.csv will be individual lines of the following format:
    2014-08-09,19:49,100

  • GPU Lockup, system crashes and reboot on Radeon op...

Hi, I've been using the Radeon open-source driver for a while (2 weeks) on an AM1 platform. And once in a while the screen just becomes erratic (or filled with crazy lines), then just reboot itself. I've extracted the relevant journalctl output (the one labelled 'kernel') that might help in finding out what the problem is. I've also included the dmesg, Xorg.0.log, and Xorg.0.log.old, though I find there's nothing fishy about it.
