PERIPHERALS - Lots and Lots of Peripherals

I love my G5 and am very happy I switched from PC to Mac, but for the life of me, I don't understand why there are so few places to plug in peripherals.
With lots of large files of photos and videos, etc., I have 4 external hard drives, as well as 2 printers, a scanner a digital card reader and a few other things to plug in.
I'm looking for an efficient way to deal with this, so I don't have to constantly be crawaling under my desk plugging and unplugging things.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
J.

Thanks for your input.
I don't know what a lot of this means:
"Actually it's better to go with SATA PCI cards and drives, unless you already have a investment in Firewire.
For instance Sonnet has a 8 channel SATA PCI card and there are external powered SATA drive enclosures like the Mini-G.
Apple of course is trying to get you to buy their X-RAID hardware with Fiberchannel PCI card with 400 mb p/s and 3 TB max capacity.
I will go begin to look into it. In the meantime, if there's any light you could shed on this from personal experience, that would be helpful.
Do you have a set-up like this?
Why/how is this better than firewire?
Thanks.
J.

  • Lots and Lots of video tracks...

    Hello Ya'all:
Just reporting some bugs/discoveries I made in FCP 5.0.3, when using storage which is almost infinetesimally fast. I know FCP supports a maximum of 99 video tracks, but I wonder how many have actually been tested (realistically): Here's some problems I have when doing lots and lots of video tracks:
    Qty. Description
Up to 10 Fine - no problem.
12 Program intermittently crashes with no error, when
    sitting idle.
14 The scroll bar on the right side of the video
portion of the timeline stops drawing properly,
but the crashing above goes away.
16 Crashing is back - scroll bar still not operating
    properly.
20 Crashing stops, but scroll bar still not drawing
    correctly.
    24 Same as above.
25 Seem to have hit some sort of maximum, as the
video portion of the timeline header turns red.

I rant for lots of reasons...as does Jim.
I rant when someone with NO CLUE as to the post production process tries to tackle a complex process thinking that FCP is easy. Especially when said people, who previously edited home movies or short films on FCP, suddenly think they can edit broadcast television.
I rant when people think a simple plugin will edit for them, or suddenly make everything ready for broadcast.
I rant when someone assumes that FCP can do something it cannot, and is mad for FCP not being able to do it.
I rant when people don't do their research, buy gear, shoot hours and hours, only to find that it won't work on ANY system...and they blame the system for not working with the new gear, even though the gear came out AFTER the system.
But mainly I rant for the first reason. Too many people think that editing is easy and that they can just buy a G5, monitor, camera and a few books and be ready for Prime Time. No no no. Even Robert Rodriguez, the ultimate film rebel, took a long time to learn what he learned. I have spent a large part of my career learning post production...broadcast standards, specs, color correction, show timing, audio post...not to mention the art of storytelling. And it really gets on my nerves when someone thinks that they can take an Mac Mini and camcorder and edit a broadcast show...and get angry at Apple for things not working properly.
Get the proper tools. Get the proper training. Cut your chops by editing a lot and a lot and a lot. Research everything before you buy and jump into a project with a huge deadline. I am venturing into HD...I start editing next week...I have been researching the topic since July and am STILL testing gear and my workflow.
I am sure there are plenty more reasons I rant, but those are the ones off the top of my head. I just have little patience with people who think that editing is easy and instantaneous. It is hard and time consuming, and if I didn't love it to death I wouldn't do it.

  • When making a circle, illustrator automaticly makes lots and lots of more circles... How to resolve this problem? Really need quick advice!!

    Hi there,
I have used illustrator now for a long period of time. Recently I purchased Adobe CC. Had no problems with it untill now.
It's like this. Whenever I try to make a circle (or, square, line or other forms) Illustrator makes lots and lots of more circles within it.
From the moment I click on the page untill I release my mouse, it keeps making circles. (see enclosed picture)
I have really no idea whatsoever how to undo this. I have used Illiustrator CC before for another project, and it worked fine. Now however, it doesn't.
Can anyone help me out here? I have payed projects to deliver, and I really need this to work really soon...
    Thnx for your help!
btw, I work on a PC with Windows 8. (don't really think it's relevant, but still..)

    Thnx!
I didn't know that could cause it. Which is actually weird since I've recently bought a new laptop. >,<U
    Thnx for your help!

  • Initial Faces scan skips lots and lots of photos

I have over 5000 photos. My initial scan took about 30 minutes. I thought it was fast, now I realize it was TOO fast - lots and lots, I'd guess over 50%, of photos were skipped.
When I look at the photos, some have boxes around the faces but most do not. It skipped even extremely clear, front view, unobstructed faces.
I took the advice of others here and deleted the "faces" files within the iPhoto package and restarted. Again the scan was really fast but flawed - I saw the same result with lots of photos seemingly skipped.
I verified by taking some photos that had NO face recognized (high quality - closeup, unobstructed front view of a child). I exported them, then re-imported into iPhoto. On importing, it did find all the faces.
This proves to me that the initial scan is FLAWED and skipping photos. If it found a face on re-importing, it should have found a face initially.
I see other people here are seeing the same behavior. Comforting to know that I'm not alone, but VERY frustrating. I don't want to take days and days to draw my own boxes around faces if there's a chance that Apple will release a fix for this.

My initial scan failed (as in not one single face box inserted). I deleted the files and started it over, and it seemed to work okay. No, it didn't get every face, but it did quite a few.
But then I imported a large number of new photos, thinking I should finally consolidate my numerous photo libraries on separate computers... and iPhoto didn't find faces in those either.
It seems like if I import a small number of photos (<200 as an estimate) it does scan them, but any more than that and it screws up.

Please help me! What can I do to stop receiving lots and lots of emails with all participants questions? I tried what was suggested but it didn't work.

You got your answers in this thread here and you marked it as correct.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16541734#16541734
When you get to the email preferences page to make the changes, did you click on "Save" at the bottom of that page to lock in the changes that you made?

  • How do I create an application with lots and lots of text?

I was asked to create an application for the iPad. This application contains a lot of static text. With "a lot" I mean Mb's of text which should be represented in a visual attractive way. One can think of this application as a website but than in application form with added features. When building this application there should be a couple of things kept in mind:
The modularity of the application. How easy will it be to add text or update it.
How does the markup for the text work. Should everything be put in labels? And what to do with images than? Or is there an alternative?
My question is: What is the proper way to setup this application? Preferably I don't want to manage the text myself. It will take ages to position everything correct. Especially since I will be working with artistic people...
    Thank you for your help!

You can always retrieve updated text (html or any other format) from a web service or other channels.  That really is up to you.  If you decide to stick with HTML, there is not too much benefit in paring HTML out of an XML feed.

  • Lots and lots of hotplug output

i recently tried copying my arch install from one partition to another partition.  i just used cp...i think it works so far, everything seems to work as before.
but i got a new problem that's annoying.  hotplug during boot would display a whole lot of useless info, which it never did before.  what's most disturbing is that this affects BOTH partitions old and new.  so i have no clue why or how copying partitions would do this.
anywho, the output is reproducable my restarting the daemon.  this is the output:

any ideas to hide all that junk?

reinstalling initscripts and hotplug didn't do the trick.  i have a feeling it's probably the bash 3 update.  i probably booted up to my old install, updated to bash 3, and then copied my partition over....so then both partitions displayed all that output.
anyways, i recompiled my kernel to have practically no modules (only my ati and iptables are modules).  almost everything else is compiled in.  most importantly the usb ones, cuz i have a usb keyboard and mouse.  anywho, i can avoid all that ugly output....for now...

  • Evrytime i go on firefox it keeps crashing and when i go in taskmanager its eaither using up 200k kb and the plugin is using up double the amount or it has lots and lots of plugins...

hello thats pritty much it.. up there ^ i have a screen shot of lots of plugins while i was typing this firefox was using up 79kb wich is normal for my laptop but as i said before it uses up 200k+ kb i was wondering why and if this could be sorted thanks

That is a problem with the Flash plugin.
You can check for problems with current Flash plugin versions and try these:
*disable a possible RealPlayer Browser Record Plugin extension for Firefox and update the RealPlayer if installed
*disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)
*disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

  • Brand new white Macbook - lots and lots of scratches all over!

I have recently purchased a white Macbook, and after less than a week of usage, I have noticed countless smudge-looking scratches all over the outer case. Both the top and bottom are covered with them; they only show up when reflecting light, and aren't deep (i.e., you can't feel them or anything).
I did not notice this before, but I'm not sure if they've been there since I got it. I haven't been putting it in a case or anything yet. This is upsetting to me since everything else about the computer is great, it's been a good first mac experience otherwise.
Is there a way to bring it into a store and swap out the case without much of a wait or delay? Or am I better of trying some kind of cleaning product?
I'm just disappointed that I have to do something like this within 4 to 5 days of owning the thing. I am very careful with it and I don't understand how I could have done anything to leave so many marks this quickly.

I completely understand your frustration with the scatches - it's a new computer and you spent a lot of money for it.
But - remember - its just a tool, and as long as it works great, you're a winner. Besides, after few months you'll wont treat it so carefully anymore.

  • I am trying to view pdfs but when i click on them lots and lots of tabs keep appearing at the top i've had 1000s,how can i stop this and how can i look at pdfs

Thanks

  • Lots and lots of code errors

I work at a nonprofit, and we've just been given a new
website provided to us by a team of volunteers. However, the
template has some minor typos that I need to fix. Whenever I save
the template, I get error after error, primarily along the lines of
"Unbalanced #EndEditable tag" or "Nested Editable Regions," but
some others have popped up, too. I can't ignore the error, either,
because the rest of the pages in the site won't update.
The volunteer team was working in two different versions of
Dreamweaver, and the following part of the code seems to be source
of several of the problems. There's two different versions of the
"begineditable" and "endeditable tags," with a section beginning
with "#begineditable" and then containing a
"templatebegineditable." When I try to standardize the tags or
remove them from within each other, the content region drops to
below the left nav. I don't understand what's happenning, or how to
    fix it. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Jodi

I think somebody worked on the page with dw3 or dw4.
If the code you showed was from the Template, it should work
    if you strip
out the #BeginEditable and #EndEditable and leave the
    TemplateBegin and
    TemplateEnd.
Then scan the code to see if all template syntax is correct,
    and everything
you need to edit is in an Editable region. dw
    menu-->modify-->Templates-->Check template syntax.
My guess is the dw4 person made one big editable area, and
    the MX or newer
person put in a group of distinct editable areas that are now
    nested inside
the old template syntax editable area.
Strong Suggestion- Make a backup copy of the site's Local
    Site Folder before
doing anything- template syntax problems can cause loss of
    content.

  • Lots and lots of authorisation checks in a listbox and a report

    Hello,
I have an usual situation in one page here (Apex 3.0, Oracle 10g r2). I tried to find a solution for it searching the forum but no luck.
It is a very simple page with an HTML region with some parameters and a plain report region below it. In the HTML region there is a list box based on a LOV, and when I turn the debug on what I see is:
    Hospital <<-- List box label
0.18: Authorization Check: "60517010643704468" User: "LCABRAL" Component: ""
0.18: Authorization Check: "60517010643704468" User: "LCABRAL" Component: ""
0.18: Authorization Check: "60517010643704468" User: "LCABRAL" Component: ""
0.18: Authorization Check: "60517010643704468" User: "LCABRAL" Component: ""
0.18: Authorization Check: "60517010643704468" User: "LCABRAL" Component: ""
The output goes on and on... it is like the authorisation is being checked for each row in the LOV.
Same thing in the report itself (it has a column which display format is lookup LOV, based on the same LOV above):
    0.21: show report
    0.22: determine column headings
    0.22: activate sort
    0.24: parse query as: ENQUIRY_LOG
    0.24: binding: ":P400_START_DATE"="P400_START_DATE" value="23/09/2009"
    0.24: binding: ":P400_ADVISOR"="P400_ADVISOR" value="-1"
    0.24: binding: ":P400_HOSPITAL"="P400_HOSPITAL" value="34"
    0.24: binding: ":P400_SHOW_BOOKED"="P400_SHOW_BOOKED" value="Y"
    0.24: binding: ":P400_END_DATE"="P400_END_DATE" value="30/09/2009"
    0.24: print column headings
    0.24: rows loop: 50 row(s)
0.24: Authorization Check: "100484744444833563" User: "LCABRAL" Component: ""
0.25: Authorization Check: "100484744444833563" User: "LCABRAL" Component: ""
0.25: Authorization Check: "100484744444833563" User: "LCABRAL" Component: ""
0.25: Authorization Check: "100484744444833563" User: "LCABRAL" Component: ""
0.25: Authorization Check: "100484744444833563" User: "LCABRAL" Component: ""
This is not causing any problems per se, but I am a bit suspicious about it... Any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Luis

    Luis,
The Hospital select list item's LOV query is:
    SELECT name, bu_id FROM
WITH access_level AS (SELECT pkg_cel.is_authorized('NEC') nec,
    pkg_cel.is_authorized('MULTI') multi,
    pkg_cel.is_authorized('Users') users FROM dual)
    SELECT name, bu_id
    FROM commons.co_business_units BU
    , access_level AL
    WHERE bu.group_bu = 1
    AND bu_type = 'H'
    AND ((al.users = 1 AND BU.BU_ID = v('USER_BU_ID'))
    OR (al.multi = 1 AND (BU.BU_ID
    IN (SELECT BU_ID
    FROM NEC_USER_BUSINESS_UNITS
    WHERE USER_ID = v('USER_ID'))
    OR BU.BU_ID = v('USER_BU_ID')))
    OR al.nec = 1)
    ) order by 1
See the reference to pkg_cel.is_authorized('NEC'). This is probably calling apex_application.public_role_check which invokes the authorization scheme logic.
Let me know if that doesn't get you on the right track.

  • I need to know best way to edit MXF files, with least rendering, is that converting the MXF or Log and Transfer? the end product is dvd, but I have lots and lots of these projects to do.

I am about to comence my Edit, and was told of Mpeg Streamclip, however this doesn't seem to work with my Canon XF305 Clips, the reason I was told to use it was so I wouldn't have to Render in Final Cut Pro all the time.. I do have the Canon Disc with the Plug in Utility and the update from their site.
Is it best to Convert these MXF files first and import them into FCP or use 'Log and Transfer', so far I am unable to do either!!
The projects on the timeline will have introduction .Movs already on it as a Template to re-use again and again with the new Footage ( MXF Files ) to be added and edited with transitions etc..This process is repeated again and again but with different MXF clips each time.
I am looking for the quickest and best way for workflow as there are 80 or more projects to do, each with 10 or so clips to be added to the timeline and Exported for DVD...Will I have to then Compress to fit onto DVD's??
I know Streamclip is an Mepeg 2 app but I thought the Canon XF305 Shot as mpeg2....
Is Log and Transfer my only Option?
Basically I need to know the quickest for Render purposes, and of course, the best way so the files aren't so huge etc etc.
Please, any suggestions would be greatly received....

We only work with PR422 files in FC7.  We use Shane's workflow with all 5D & MXF footage.
Make your life easier and stick to the ProRes family for your footage and edit sequences. Avoid H264 & convert any you have to ProRes.
Unless you are considering Blu-Ray the only way to deliver video on a DVD is to convert it to SD.
Depending on the length of your show you can make a Blu-Ray in Compressor but you have very limited authoring options when compared to DVD Studio Pro.
Compressor can also convert your HD to SD mpg-2 & Ac3 files. The best results usually come from setting the frame controls in the mpg-2 setting of Compressor to best. Depending on the the length of the show and your Qmaster settings this can take quite a while.
I personally find Compressor's HD to SD DVD conversion varies. Sometimes it is wonderful and sometimes not so much. I prefer the following as it is usually is faster and very consistent.
Export a quicktime movie (not QT conversion) of your final sequence
Import the exported HD file back into FC.
Create a SD 16x9 sequence and then drop in the recently exported HD seq and render. Rendering the sequence basically has FC doing the HD to SD conversion. Export the SD sequence and then convert to mpg-2 & ac3 in Compressor. While this does take time I still find it faster than Compressor with Qmaster utilizing all cores.
Another option is using jobs in Compressor
    http://pixelcorps.cachefly.net/macbreak-154-540p-h264.mov
In this workflow you would have Compressor convert the HD file to SD and then through jobs convert the SD file to mpg2 & Ac3.
In theory the jobs version could be faster (based on a number of variables- length, Qmaster, etc) but I haven't had time to compare the two.

  • New Homehub - Lots and lots of errors?

     Hi,
I recently upgraded to the black homehub 2.0 (version A even though I asked for a version B) from my old white version 1.5. Plugged it in, everything went smoothly. The download data is half what it was before, but Im guessing it'll settle out in a few days or after a few power cycles as the broadband is a bit unstable at the moment (off and on.. off and on..)!
The weird thing is, is that Im getting a ton of Errors apparently, I dont know if its normal so I thought I'd post here and find out!
    ADSL line status
    Connection informationLine state Connected
    Connection time 0 days, 0:01:50
    Downstream 2,902 Kbps
    Upstream 547 Kbps
    ADSL settingsVPI/VCI 0/38
    Type PPPoA
    Modulation ITU-T G.992.3
    Latency type Interleaved
    Noise margin (Down/Up) 6.1 dB / 6.0 dB
    Line attenuation (Down/Up) 64.0 dB / 39.0 dB
    Output power (Down/Up) 0.0 dBm / 12.9 dBm
    Loss of Framing (Local) 11

    Loss of Power (Local) 0
    FEC Errors (Down/Up) 390 / 4
    CRC Errors (Down/Up) 0 / 2147480000
    HEC Errors (Down/Up) nil / 20
    Error Seconds (Local) 2
Is this normal, or has something gone wrong?
    Regards,
    Tom

Dont worry, I repasted all the hub details but forgot to update the previous paragraph . Speed has returned to normal now at around 2200. Its already in the master socket, so I'll just plug it into the test one.
Before plugging it into test socket:
    ADSL line status
    Connection informationLine state Connected
    Connection time 0 days, 0:01:32
    Downstream 2,336 Kbps
    Upstream 563 Kbps
    ADSL settingsVPI/VCI 0/38
    Type PPPoA
    Modulation ITU-T G.992.3
    Latency type Interleaved
    Noise margin (Down/Up) 1.5 dB / 6.4 dB
    Line attenuation (Down/Up) 62.0 dB / 39.0 dB
    Output power (Down/Up) 0.0 dBm / 12.9 dBm
    Loss of Framing (Local) 22
    Loss of Signal (Local) 12
    Loss of Power (Local) 0
    FEC Errors (Down/Up) 9219 / 0
    CRC Errors (Down/Up) 356 / 2147480000
    HEC Errors (Down/Up) nil / 8
    Error Seconds (Local) 7
    Plugged into test socket:
    ADSL line status
    Connection informationLine state Connected
    Connection time 0 days, 0:01:01
    Downstream 2,983 Kbps
    Upstream 520 Kbps
    ADSL settingsVPI/VCI 0/38
    Type PPPoA
    Modulation ITU-T G.992.3
    Latency type Interleaved
    Noise margin (Down/Up) 5.8 dB / 5.5 dB
    Line attenuation (Down/Up) 62.5 dB / 39.0 dB
    Output power (Down/Up) 0.0 dBm / 12.9 dBm
    Loss of Framing (Local) 33
    Loss of Signal (Local) 15
    Loss of Power (Local) 0
    FEC Errors (Down/Up) 749 / 0
    CRC Errors (Down/Up) 0 / 2147480000
    HEC Errors (Down/Up) nil / 8
    Error Seconds (Local) 172
I also have a ADSL plate on my master socket (it has a microfilter built in) so to test the test socket of course I plugged in an external microfilter.
What does these results say, the internet has been dodgy all day.. not staying up for ages (but reconnecting quite quickly).
    Thanks,
    Tom
