Perl doesn't like utf8

Perl doesn't like it when I have my locale set to en_US.utf8. It works fine with just en_US. Is there a fix for this?

How could you set perl to a locale if that locale doesn't exist?
Maybe there are ways to encode just specific things in utf8, rather than having to change all of per's locale. If this is what you mean, then read the perldoc

How do i put a mobile number in on numbers '09? like 0414441472. Doesn't like 0 at the front. Thanks

    Ed,
There are a number of ways to do this. Your phone number consists of all numerals, yet isn't a numeric value, but rather a text value. Numbers doesn't know that, so it treats it as a numeric value and strips off what it feels is an unnecessary leading zero.
    You have there options:
Format the cells as Text prior to making the entry.
Leave the cells as a Numeric value format, but choose Custom Format to set the number of displayed places and choose to display leading zeros.
Use the Numeral System Format and set it to base 10, displaying 9 digits, or whatever you need.
There are ways to convert a number to text and add required leading zeros with a formula too, but it's needless work.

  • MP3-Library doesn't like some of MediaSource's ID3 t

Just a tip for MP3-Library users:
On rare occasions, MediaSource 3.30.2 will produce an ID3 tag that MP3-Library doesn't like. (This is pretty rare -- out of 45 tracks I updated the tags on, 6 did this.) This results in the file being displayed as corrupted. If you select "Analyze/Fix MP3," it finds a frame or two with random specifications at the very start of the file, followed by a single bad frame, and then all good frames.
If you check all availiable fix options (delete selected frames [check the junk and bad ones], delete garbage before st frame, delete garbage after last frame), it lops about 30 bytes off the end of the tag/header and takes a few good frames off the start of the file.
According to MP3Utility and EncSpot, there's nothing wrong with the files, and they play just fine in MediaSource, Winamp, and on the Zen. The header data that was destroyed doesn't affect the ID3 data. It only seems to have removed the Xing header. (No, I don't use Xing. LAME 3.97 alpha puts Xing-compatible headers on its VBR files.)
The following are the summary data that MP3Utility shows. This is from the original file, fresh out of LAME:
    <i>File size: 3,63,232 bytes
Offset to first frame header: 2,630 bytes
    MPEG version .0; Layer III
Bitrate: VBR (Xing); Sample rate: 44,00 Hz
    Channel mode: Joint stereo
Private: No; CRCs: No; Copyrighted: No
    Original: No; Emphasis: None
    Frame size: ,52 samples/frame
    Frame length: 47 bytes/frame (unpadded)
    Pad size: byte(s)
    Estimated frames: 8,945
    Estimated time: 3:54 (234 secs.)</i>
This is after importing the file into the PC Music Library and clicking "Update Tag." I didn't modify anything, just told it to re-write the ID3 tag:
    <i>File size: 3,63,232 bytes
Offset to first frame header: 2,630 bytes
    MPEG version .0; Layer III
Bitrate: VBR (Xing); Sample rate: 44,00 Hz
    Channel mode: Joint stereo
Private: No; CRCs: No; Copyrighted: No
    Original: No; Emphasis: None
    Frame size: ,52 samples/frame
    Frame length: 47 bytes/frame (unpadded)
    Pad size: byte(s)
    Estimated frames: 8,945
    Estimated time: 3:54 (234 secs.)</i>
And this is after MP3-Library "fixed" it:
    <i>File size: 3,629,325 bytes
Offset to first frame header: 2,600 bytes
    MPEG version .0; Layer III
Bitrate: 224 kbps; Sample rate: 44,00 Hz
    Channel mode: Joint stereo
Private: No; CRCs: No; Copyrighted: No
    Original: No; Emphasis: None
    Frame size: ,52 samples/frame
    Frame length: 73 bytes/frame (unpadded)
    Pad size: byte(s)
    Estimated frames: 4,96
    Estimated time: 2:0 (30 secs.)</i>
No, MP3-Library DIDN'T chop 04 seconds off the file. The estimated frame count and length are WRONG because the Xing header was destroyed by MP3-Library. This header would normally tell MP3Utility how long the file really is, otherwise it takes the bitrate of the first frame and extrapolates that over the file length. (Without this header, many programs' progress sliders won't be as accurate.)
So, if MP3-Library tells you a file is corrupted after going through MediaSource and the file wasn't corrupted before, DON'T fix it. You'll only make things worse. I've never seen MediaSource or my Zen actually damage a file.
(At first, I told it to fix 'em. Now I'm going through and restoring the backups it made.)

i have used mp3-libary many times before because it said a large amount of my collection was corrupted. but it seams to be better.as i havent used media source to import them so i think they may have actually be corrupt. but interesting findings.

  • MacBook Pro doesn't like my 3rd gen. iPod

Just got a new MacBook Pro (work-issue = no administrator password for me), which replaced a Titanium PowerBook. Tried to hook up and sync my 3rd gen. iPod for the first time, using the Firewire port of course. (Music library has already moved to new machine.)
The iPod doesn't seem to be seen by the MacBook Pro. It doesn't show up in the iTunes source list or on the desktop. The iPod goes into "Do Not Disconnect" mode, then it freezes.
I've seen other people posting with similar or same issues, but no resolution. What could be going on?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Update: I have discovered that if I connect the iPod to the Mac with the Firewire cable only, things work perfectly. If I connect thru the dock with the iPod sitting in it (like I was before), things go haywire.
So I guess the MacBook Pro likes my 3rd gen. iPod just fine. The iPod dock is what it doesn't like.
Weird. Thanks for all your thoughts.

  • Create desktop quietly fails - doesn't like my ".portal" file

    Guys,
Since SP2, we're having trouble creating a desktop to "import" our ".portal" file.
After going through the sequence of clicks, it just comes back quietly but the
desktop is not there. It only does this if I "Choose a Template". It seems that
it doesn't like something in my template file but gives no indication of what.
If I revert back to an old template file, it works. However, I also re-created
a new template file from scratch and it won't read that one either.
    Any clues?
Is there some debug/logging options for Admin Portal?
    Thanks,
    Phil

    Jeff,
    Thanks for the reply.
The .portal file was created in workshop and workshop reads it fine.
I discovered that after deleting all my books and pages from the Admin Portal
library, it imported my .portal file successfully. I'm thinking it finds some
"Definition Label" conflict between those in the .portal file and what's in the
    library.

  • Encore CS4 Flash output - server doesn't like file names

Apparently my ftp server for my web site does not like files with spaces in the names, but Encore seems to use spaces in some of the file names for the png files in the menus. Is there any way around this? Can I force it to replace spaces with underscores? Can I go in and manually change the links and the file names (there aren't too many). this is very annoying - how could this happen?
    Thanks,
    Scott

If your server doesn't like spaces in file names, it's likely due to HTML address rules. However, these files won't be linked via HTML, but through the AuthoredContent.xml file directly into the SWF playing in the Flash player, which doesn't have the same limitations as HTML.
If your server is kicking a fuss up about this, replace the single space character in the PNG filename with an underscore character (do this at file system level), then edit the AuthoredContent.xml file and replace the space character in the PNG filename with an underscore character. Save everything, and then upload the files in the same hierarchy that Encore exports.
    That should do it.

  • Apex 3.1 doesn't like passing variables to a different page than you're on

My application was working fine in 3.0, but when we upgraded it, this feature stopped working and I'm not really sure why this is the case. I looked at the security and there's no security features turned on that would seem to prevent this.
I'm trying to pass a variable into a field on page 101, but the URL didn't previously specify the URL - this is the actual URL that was used and worked previously:
    http://clients.intellireal.com/pls/apexp/f?p=103::::::P101_COMPANYID:85
As you can see, I'm not passing in the page number, so there seems to be some sort of security feature that's not allowing the hidden field on page 101 (P101_COMPANYID) to get set to 85 like I believe it should. If I use the following URL, it works:
    http://clients.intellireal.com/pls/apexp/f?p=103:101:::::P101_COMPANYID:85
The difference you'll notice if you try this is that the logo will change from IntelliReal to IntelliRealAdvisor depending on what the company id is set to. If you try any other page number (i.e. 306, which is a valid page), it doesn't work either.
I also noticed that the home link seems to have more importance than it used to. The page that users go to in our application depends on who logs in. So we had to change the home link to 101 for the application to function properly.
This is the first time that an upgrade of Apex has caused my existing code to break - now I'm a bit worried about my other code!
Any thoughts on how I can get this URL to work would be greatly appreciated:
    http://clients.intellireal.com/pls/apexp/f?p=103::::::P101_COMPANYID:85
    Thanks!
    Brad

    Brad,
Thanks for all that information. You are correct that the behavior changed from 3.0 to 3.1 and it looks like we broke something and that was not our intention. We may be able to repair it in the 3.1.1 patch.
    In the meantime, try this:
    1. As the initial request use:
    .../f?p=103:::P101_COMPANY_ID:85
    2. In the authentication scheme, set the Session Not Valid Page attribute to -No Page Selected- and set the Session Not Valid URL to:
    .../f?p=&APP_ID.:101:&SESSION.:::&APP_ARGS.
    3. Edit page 101 and change its security attribute to Page Is Public
    4. Don't try to make sense of how many colons are in the URLs, above. It makes no sense.

  • Internet Connect doesn't like me...

Hi. Normally I can figure out what's wrong with my computer on my own, but this time I've been thrown for a loop and I need help. And I apologize in advance for the lack of useful information about my computer. :/
I've got a G4, tower of some sort, blue and silver (not the bright blue, the darker grey-blue)... Anyway. I just upgraded from 10.2.8 to 10.3.??? last week, and Internet Connect won't work. There's a possibility it's the same problem I was having with it before the upgrade, but I wasn't able to fix it then, either, so I suppose it doesn't matter. Anyway.
I use my cellphone to connect to the internet. At least, I'd like to. It works on my roommate's XP laptop just fine, but I've never gotten it to work on my computer. Various phones, I have modem scripts for all of them. I use Bluetooth to connect. I'm fairly sure I have the correct login information. (*99# i think, can't remember. t-mobile, anyway) The modem will pick up and dial, will say "connecting" for about thirty seconds, then will say "disconnecting" until I decide to restart the computer to make it stop saying that. The error log doesn't give me any really useful information on why it's disconnecting, as far as I can remember. It just kind of dies, I guess.
Any thoughts? And again, I apologize for lack of useful information. :/

are you connected for the 30 seconds or not at all?
i had similar issue when i recently installed an airport extreme. i had to check to see what the default setting for internet connect was and that it didnt automatically try to connect using the default (previosuly i wasnt wireless so it was looking for the ethernet cable). needless to say, it created havoc because i thought everything was connected correctly - and it was - but i had failed to remove the auto connection via PPPoE.
check your internet connect to see if your machine is still trying to connect via alternate means IN ADDITION TO your bluetooth.

  • Mac Mini doesn't like Philips  32PF9830

    Hi all,
I have a problem when connecting my Mac-Mini with the Philips LCD-TV via the DVI. I only get a blank screen, what ever I try.
    Here is my history:
I bought a DVI-D (Dual Link, 3m = 10inch?) cable and connected it to the 9830. Immediatley I saw the Mac-Os desktop, but the image was flickering (it looked like a wrong frequency) So I changed the resolution to 1920 x 1080 60Hz. I got an Black screen. Then I rebooted the Mac and I saw the grey Startup screen (the apple with an circle) and then again a black screen. This was also the last time I saw an Image coming from the Mac Mini via the DVI output.
Then I switched to a VGA cable and connected the VGA Cable via 2 DVI-VGA adpaters to the 9830 this only works if I boot the mac without the VGA cable connected and then after the reboot is finished connect the cable to the Mac. What I then see is a 800 x 600 VGA resolution. If i then switch to another resolution I receive again a black screen.
The Mac Mini DVI output is working because I have verified it by connecting it to another LCD display.
I also verified the Philips DVI Input, by connecting it to a PC with DVI video-card also working fine (I experienced a bad image at 1980 x1080 too).
I also tried an DVI-I cable (Single Link, 1,8m) but no improvement. I played around with Switchres x and displayconfigx. Nothing really worked.
I use VNC, so I can easily switch the res at my MAC from my Laptop. I see that when I'm switch the input at my TV the Mac recognizes that there is a LCD display and switches automatically over to a 1280 x 740 resolution (I see this in the VNC screen) but the TV still stays black.
MacOS and Switchres and displayconfigx are detecting the LCD TV correctly. I get only those resolutions displayed in the System settings that are specified by Philips for this TV.
I really don't know what to check else .Every thing works fine but a MAC - Philips connection simply doesn't work.
Here is the DDC file, If anyone can have a look at this or maybe have another suggestion, that would be great.
BTW: It took me so long to convince my wife to buy a Mac Mini for the living room. Now it looks like my wife was all the time right. I hate loosing against my wife !

Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Concerning "Shouldn't here also appear the video formats ? How does the Mac detects the other formats, if they are not in the DDC ?"
Those are standard video timings and they pre-exist inside Mac OS, though I don't know exactly which file contains them. Honestly I don't know how the Mac can know which video timings your TV can work from because DDC is not supported over video connections like S-Video and Composite Video as far as I am aware. Perhaps when you previously made a DVI connection and the EDID was read, the information about supported ranges in Descriptor #3 (near the bottom of the EDID file) was matched to the pre-existing video timings inside Mac OS and only those which matched up to your TV are presented in Display Preferences. I am just guessing.
I doubt cable length is giving problems. True the mini has poor drive out the VGA port but I have not heard the same of the DVI port. I use an inexpensive 3m DVI cable with my mini and TV it works without issue.
One other thing you might want to try since you are seeing video timings which you would like to access when making a DVI or VGA connection...as far as I know, if you boot a Mac and hold down Command-Opt-A-V keys all together while the Mac starts up, this will force the Mac to treat the attached display as an AV display. In that case the video timings you see may become available under Display Preferences even though you are making a "PC" connection (VGA or DVI) and not a video connection. I am not sure this will work but it is worth a try.

  • Doesn't like some of my MIDI?

Hiya! I'm using Logic 9 on my Black Macbook, running 10.5.8, with a Roland TD-4 set, and an M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB interface. My problem doesn't really make sense to me. I've recorded a drum track using the kit with the Superior Drummer 2.0 plug-in like I always do, but in this last session that I'm working on, Logic just stops playing MIDI after I record any of it. I'll have some MIDI done, it'll play, but as soon as I record a take, it doesn't play back any of the MIDI on that specific take until I restart Logic, and then it shows the take as being Muted (kind of transparent and comes back when I press M).
Not only that, but now it ignores specific parts of my take even after I restart Logic. http://i581.photobucket.com/albums/ss259/Olnoname/Picture1.png (just realized I'd moved the take up to the Sax to see if the problem persisted outside of that track, and, yes, it does.)
That picture shows this latest take that I have for my MIDI drum track. The 9 notes at the end (measure 26.4 to 27) aren't played when I play the rest of the song, but only those specific notes. I can click on them and get the appropriate sounds, but only when I click on them individually. I'm totally at a loss now. Any help would be deeply appreciated or lemme know if I need to elaborate any further.

Ok, there's been others who've experienced this exact same problem and I don't know that a solution was ever found. I kind of suspect a corrupt project.
Is this by any change a project or a template that was started in Logic 8?
Do you have the same problems when creating a brand new project?

  • Apple doesn't like podcasts?

The old (ios6) podcast app was terrible.  That's an objective fact; look at the ratings.  I used it once, deleted it.  Podcasts belong in the music app, like they always were.  Now, ios 7 not only doesn't include any app that allows podcast listening, it also didn't update the terrible podcasts app for ios 7.  They went crazy redesigning the **** compass, but the podcast app got left behind.  So my options are go back to ios 6, or download the terrible app and suffer with the limitations it presents, or pay for a third party podcast app and hope for the best.
    So, here's my question:
    Seriously?
    Thanks,
    Rob

Its not just bluetooth and new cars that are suffering. I use the flicktunes gesture control app and listen to podcsts while driving. Now I can't. So fed up with this. All I can think of doing is import the downloaded files into a regular playlist and change genre from genre to anything else and see if that works but its clumsy at best.
I don't understand this. Half what is in my music app is spoken word so why not let me include podcasts which, when it comes down to it they're all just audio files.
Please apple, let me play podcasts in the music app!

  • Powerbook doesn't like external HD - Why?

    Hi There,
I have the HD from an old G3 iBook (with OS 10.4 installed) in a external firewire enclosure which is bus powered. When I plug it into my 17" Powerbook it doesn't recognize the format and prompts me to initialize or eject. But when I plug it into my old G3 iMac there is no problem. It appears on the desktop like normal. Both computers are running OS 10.4.
Can anyone explain this? How can I get it working with my Powerbook??

Its not normal, stannard, but it is certainly technically possible for this to occur. If the drive draws more current than it should for some reason (ie more than the regular FW specioication) then the port may not be able to provide sufficient. I have seen similar problems mentioned as an issue with bus powered USB devices on some PBs, for example, and it can be common in situations where more than one bus powered device is attached simultaneously on many computers.
You are probably more likely to run into such an issue when running from battery rather than the mains I would think.
Different computers have different abilities in this area, so the fact that the drive won't work on one computer but will on another is not altogether surprising, although it is uncommon, even if everything is working OK. Does the bus powered drive have a power connection option? Some do. It would be interesting to see if it worked when provided with an independent supply.
Have you tried another cable, yet? Cables really can be the bane of your life when it comes to firewire.
Some cable manufacturers actually sell cables that provide a visual indication of power and data availability - see http://www.granitedigital.com/catalog/pg18_firewirecables.htm for example. Worth considering, though I haven't tried them myself.
The article at http://www.wiebetech.com/whitepapers/FireWirePortFailures.php is interesting, by the way. Some of the stuff in http://www.macintouch.com/panfirewire04.html is too.
    Cheers
    Rod
