Perl, MysQL, DBD, running 10.5.7

Question

Hi,
As several forums suggested Apple screwed up Perl with the 2009-001 Security update. As I found out the problems with Perl have not been repaired in 10.5.7, although I expected it to be. Alas.
I used to run Perl scripts using the DBI::DBD interface to mysql. Untill now I could use my old G4 Mac to do this and transport the database items needed, but I do want to run it on 10.5.xx and re-consolidate my database environments back into one.
Did anyone managed to get the DBD::mysql interface running using 10.5.7 ? I've tried all kinds of approaches, installed a personal copy of the newest Perl, installed DBI, etc. But DBD still has problems, although it reports different errors after the upgrade to 10.5.7. It complains about missing symbols, not being able to load the BootDBD_mysql from the mysql.bundle file, etc. Tried CPAN, local compilation in modules, etc.
Can anyone help me out? I've logged error-messages, have several dumps, but it is costing me a lot of time and I don't seem to make much progress. I do know my way around using Unix tools, command-line, etc.

The best thing to do is to login to CPAN with
sudo perl -MCPAN -e shell
and type
install DBI::DBD
You may not be able to login to CPAN or the command may fail given Security Update 2009-001 broke your PERL.
I ran into a similar problem (amavis broken) and can't remember the exact steps, but I read and followed the advice for fixing CPAN, installing the missing/broken modules, and force-installing when necessary.
You'll first need to fix PERL's IO module from source. This page also recommends
cpan> upgrade
which I ran but, be warned, the output is hairy, and the upgrade process takes upwards of 5 hours. You should take notes (i.e. log Terminal output) and research what failed to install, force installing those items once upgrade has run its course. I don't know what would happen if you skipped this step. You can always come back to it if you don't have the time.
This post on these discussion boards was helpful, as were some of the posts in that thread.
Finally, I also followed the instructions here to
cpan> install Scalar::Util
answering "yes" to any required dependencies.
NB: I followed these instructions on 10.5.6 and have not yet upgraded to 10.5.7. The horror is still too fresh in my mind and I'm waiting for a reply to this poll. If you get things working, maybe you can be one of the responders.
