Permanent cropping

Hi All,
I just cropped a whole bunch of pages in PDF file.  However, after I save the file one can still go back and uncrop.  Is there a way of making all of the cropping changes permanent?
Thanks
Starsky

Hi again,
Using the examine document and then deleting the white spaces did not change the documents margins.  The crop command still shows the white spaces of the crop even after the examine document command was processed and saved.
I`ll have to learn the redaction command to comment further on that answer.

  • "Permanently" Crop Clips?

I would like to "permanently" crop and/or split video clips while editing raw video within iMovie. I have been editing sports video (e.g. soccer game action) for highlight movies where I typically need only a small fraction of the video for the finished product. My problem with iMovie is that the full content of cropped clips remains, filling up my drives with gigabytes of unwanted video. I want to delete the trimmings when I am sure I have the final edited clip.
I always keep a copy of the raw footage as backup, so I am not worried about restoring edited portions of clips. A 20 minute finished highlight movie might be about 16-18 Gb, of which about 10-12 Gb is trimmed video. That's a lot of precious hard drive space and it makes handling the movie cumbersome.
Is there a hidden way to achieve this within iMovie, or perhaps a workaround, or might I need a third party software to solve my problem?

    Welcome to the forum, 2Ns.
When a project has multiple clips — so that exporting each to a Full Quality movie is a nuisance — the simplest solution is usually to export the Timeline back the camera, then import from the camera to a new iMovie project. The clips you exported from Project A will normally return as discrete clips in Project B. Clips such as transitions and titles will no longer be editable, of course.
This purge is best done before you add transitions, titles and other edits. Import the original video to Project A, discard the clips you don't want, export Project A to camera, re-import to Project B, then discard Project A.
If for some reason the clips you export from Project A don't return as discrete clips in Project B, here's a workaround to force it to happen: In Project A, create a five-second "Black" clip (a placeholder clip), change it to a highly-noticeable color like pink, drag the pink clip to the Clips pane, then Option-drag a copy to between each of your video clips on the Timeline, then export to the camera. When you re-import to Project B the video clips will all be separated by a pink clip, forcing iMovie to deliver each video clip as a discrete clip. Select all the pink clips, hit the Delete key, and only your discrete clips remain.
The pink clip workaround usually isn't necessary. It's useful if the original video had no time code. If it was imported from a VHS tape, for example. Test this workaround with your camera before relying on it.

Tip: The export tape is valuable. It is your best backup, containing only the clips you want to retain. (Letting you re-use the original tape.) Before exporting Project A to the tape, consider adding a title describing the event — "1/5/2007 Graettinger vs. Ruthven, Away". If you can add multiple games to the tape, consider printing a tape index on the box. I've used a searchable database to catalog tapes and print labels.
(Do NOT be tempted to record the export at slow speed. The tape may not play reliably in other cameras.)

  • How do I permanently crop my photos (destructive edit) ?

I like how Lightroom leaves my original photo intact, and allows me to reverse all edits.  However, sometimes I know I will not need to preserve the entire original file as shot.  For example, I have a series of bird images where, if one can imagine the photo is divided into a 3 x 3 grid, and the bird is in the center square only.  The rest of the photo is wasted space and therefore each of these images is taking up 8 times as much space on my hard drive as the image I need would.  Is there a way to permanently crop the original photo, cutting out the unimportant part and leaving only my subject?  Especially if some of these are RAW files, they can take up quite a bit of space.

+1 vote.. There really is NO way to substantially reduce raw file size, so you either have to convert to non-raw format (jpeg/lossy-dng) and lose the raws, or get more space, if you want to keep them I mean. Note: the latest version of NX2 supports removing the embedded jpeg (in bulk) if that would help. That'll cut a few megabytes from every raw.

  • Cropped .pdf in Preview To Show Permanent Cropping?

    Hello
I am trying to get a multiple page .pdf that I created and cropped in Preview onto my iPad.
I understand the process, however when I finally view the file on the iPad, it has the original scans from the .pdf and not the ones I carefully cropped to make neater.
How can I save a .pdf to permanently reflect the cropping I made?
    Many Thanks

In the Preview Help (page about Crop) you will may read :
    +Rognage de documents PDF+
+Il est possible de rogner une page d'un document PDF afin de supprimer des portions inutiles. Vous pouvez rogner uniquement la page affichée ou toutes les pages du document.+
+*Le rognage de document n'affecte pas son contenu. _Vous pouvez visualiser à nouveau le document original_ en choisissant Présentation > Afficher PDF > Zone de données*+.
which an automatic translator translate as :
    +Crop PDF document+
+It is possible to crop a page of a document PDF to remove useless portions. You can crop only the displayed page or all the pages of the document.+
+*Cropping document does not affect its contents. _You can display again the original document_ by choosing View > Show PDF > Zone of data.*+
Given that, it's clear that the cropped PDF just embed the infos decribing the size and the location of the cropping shape.
It appears that the app displaying these PDFs on the ipad is unaware of this feature.
It would be a good idea to post a feedback to Apple.
I don't know if they have a link dedicated to the ipad or if the one used for mac applications is valid.
Given the current behaviour, it would be useful to use a tool able to apply a 'destructive' crop.
You may start testing *_TransformPDFtoImages Service - 1.0_* (free)

  • Permanent cropping trouble

I have cropped some pages and am now trying to make those crops permanent before sending the document to my colleagues. I use the "Remove Hidden Information" tool, but the tool is not detecting the crops (it says something like, "There is no hidden information to remove."). Even saving the PDF with a new filename doesn't help. And I don't want to use the "Sanitize Document" tool because then I lose my searchable text (it is a scanned and OCR'd document). Any ideas??

The only really safe way to remove things is redaction. Perhaps you could redact what you don't want, THEN crop.

  • How do you crop in Quicktime?

I'm aware of the masking function, using a black and white gif, but I'm wondering if there is a way to actually permanently crop the movie, removing the information from the file to result in a smaller file size. Does anyone know if this is possible? I have been unable how to figure out how to do it with either Quicktime Pro or Autodesk Cleaner.
    Thanks!!!

You have to re-compress the video. If you don't, the mask image must always stick to the video file. In such case, the file size won't change.

  • Can I resize pages in Acrobat?

    Hi,
I'm in a rush to get my graphic design portfolio requirments done for my portfolio class at VCU.  Please help if I don't finish it I don't graduate with my BFA!!!  Ok I am over exaggerating but if I can resize this in Acrobat Pro it will save lots of time and I'm going insane from all the stress.
I have to resize all my portfolio pieces so they are within an 8 1/2 x 11 page format.  My current pdf portfolio has all my pieces at all random sizes. I have about 39 pages some are horizontal magazine layouts and some are vertical posters.  So when I resize everything will be on a page with some white space depending on the page.  I can go into indesign and do this but that will take hours cause of importing large files.  If I could just resize in Acrobat Pro (I have 9.1) I could be done soon.  If it can't be done then I'll just have to do it the hard way, but I need an answer asap.  I can't find anything that helps on the net.
Or if I can't resize my pages in this program does anyone have any suggestions as to how I may do so quickly?  Anything to avoid importing page by page into indesign...  I have the full adobe CS4 suite so I can work in any of those programs or if there is some free program that will work too.
    Thank you!

Apparently,  you can't do it in Acrobat 9 .2 anyway. (Make /Print a Pdf from a Pdf or re-fry)
The to do it, use to be, was you make your correction, (example to make a permanent crop) was that you desire the either go to apple's Print to PDF or use AdobePDF printer.

  • How do I cut a circle shape out of a block of text in  Illustrator?

I don't like the effect area type tool gives so I want to do it manually i.e. have a box filled with my text then put a circle over it and cut everything except what's in the circle. I don't want a mask though, I want it permanently cropped.

Yes to end up with partials. I'm wanting to making the word "worlds" into a circle, that is an eillipse filled with instances of "worlds" text in it with no outline in the ellipse. It doesn't matter that parts of characters will be lost.
Similarly, I want to do the opposite, have a page filled with text and cut a shape out so the emphasis is on the cut shape (in this instance it's a palm tree shape) again it matters not that parts of some of the characters in the text will be cut.

  • I want to change document size.Don't know

    Hi there !
I want to add a centimeter of blank space to each page of my document, without affecting document's layout.
I think is the opposite action of cropping.
But i don't know how to do it.
    Need help !
    thanks

I want to permanently crop pdf. How? Crop tool only hides the cropped space but inside our heidelberg RIP it (pdf's page size) shows its actual size.

  • How can I permanently change the opacity option when cropping an image?

I can save the crop opacity at say 5%, exit Photoshop 13, and setting has persisted (Edit > Preferences > Display & Cursors > Opacity).  However, when I crop a second image without exiting PS, the opacity has returned to 75%.  I am cropping some very dark scanned slides, and I need the 5% opacity to see the slide corners and edges.

See if resetting the pse 13 editor preferences makes any difference.
Go to Edit>Preferences>General, click on Reset Preferences on next launch and then restart the pse 13 editor.

  • How do I permanently save edits I make in LR3?

I am new to this software. I  have an existing collection of over 40,000 images. I am an amateur photographer making images for
my own amusement, and I also document objects that are brought to me for restoration. Both purposes are very important to me.
I have been using Picasa to manage my photos for several years. While it is limited, it is very elegant and easy to use. It also does not change the original file until a request is made for a permanent change, at which point a backup original is made. Once saved, the picasa edit can be viewed by any other viewer, software or browser I am aware of.
I am liking all the manipulations that are possible with LR3. I am concerned that there seems to be no way to save an edited file so that it can be viewed using other (non adobe) software. I want to be able to upload images to my website, and to be able to share with my customers, friends, family etc.  I do not want to be locked in to Flickr . I am very concerned that I might spend huge amounts of time learning LR3 then even huger amounts of time editing my images with it, only to find at some point down the road that I will be locked in and unable to see my work using another software/viewer/browser. I.E. what if I were to convert to a Mac and decide to use Aperture 3 instead? What if somebody else comes up with software I prefer and wish to change?  Am I always going to be bound up with LR to see my edited work? What if Adobe decides to no longer support LR3 and replaces it with a product that I find unacceptable, unaffordale or incomprehensible?  (all three  scenarios have happened to me in the past).  Will I have to rework thousands of images years from now? I am very confused about this, and would much rather drop the software now before I get in too deep. I absolutely do not want to be commited to having to use anybody's software forever.
I see the line "Web Photo Gallery created by Adobe Lightroom." and it terrifies me. I may have used a Pentax camera, and Adobe software, but the images were created by me, and I wish to retain total control over my work.
    JG

I quite understand and greatly value the non invasive features that preserve the original data.
I also appreciate basics, from which I can learn and extrapolate.
I edited and exported a dng file, to a jpeg format, it went from 9mb to 865kb
I edited and exported a 9.6mb jpg which became a 1.5 mg jpg.
I did a separate edit (major crop) and small adjustements using Picasa, and saved a copy. Both jpg.
The original was 11.4 mb, and the copy 5.2 mb.Used the same file to do an edit using the camera mfg
software, and the file went from 11.4 to 983kb
I may be missing something very obvious or I may be overly paranoid.
Most of the time, once I am done with an edit, I do not wish to revisit.
I am concerned about what happens to 90% or so of the data. I remain
unclear  about the integrity of the "exported"/ "saved" edit in the event that original file/data is lost, or separated from
    the LR coding instructions,
or if LR becomes unsupported or abandoned.
Being able to reference conservation treatment data 10 or 15 years down the road can be critical.
Memory is cheap. If the answer is multiple back ups for original data, metadata, and pertinent software, then
that is an answer.  If it means the editied image is forever and permanently linked to LR, and without LR,
the original file must be re-edited to similar result, that is also an answer. If the loss of information results in image degradation
analagous to photographing a magazine print of an original transparency, or trying to work with data from a thumbnail image,
that is also an answer. Whichever if any is the most accurate, defines my approach to how I might use this software. A little like archival quality printing versus drug store snapshot prints.  Time spent editing is orders of magnitude greater that time spent capturing the image. Protecting that investment of time is what I am ultimately interested in.

  • Is there any way to prevent Aperture from Auto Cropping an image?

Is there any way to prevent Aperture from auto cropping an image? I use the "Do Not Crop" aspect ratio often and Aperture constantly picks cropping aspects for me, which is driving me crazy. Can I set "Do Not Crop" as the ratio I want on a more permanent basis anyhow? Thanks for the help.
    Chris

This is a current bug.  Please report it via "Aperture→Send Aperture Feedback".
Just to clarify, the problem is not auto-cropping, the problem is the the crop tool aspect ratio is arbitrarily set (in my case, always to something close to the current crop aspect ratio).  You can reset it (on a per-crop basis) to "Do not constrain".
    It is very bothersome.
You might try trashing your prefs.  Details on the Trouble-shooting page.  I have had the bug return more than once.

    Hello,
I have been using a Satellite Pro A200 (PSAE4) laptop for some time now without any major issues.
My dvd drive (tsst crop TS-L632H) is no longer working for a few days now... More precisely, its LED is permanently orange blinking. Drivers are up to date. The eject button doesn't work either. No disc is inserted. The drive seems fine in the Windows device manager...
If opened manually and if a disc is inserted in the drive, I can't see any data. Can't boot on the disc either.
I'm running under Vista 32bit SP1 with the latest bios available on the toshiba website (2.40).

In iOS5 on the iPhone 4 when I edit my photos (crop, adjust color, etc) with the built-in photo editing tools, the photos look fine on the iphone, but when I upload them to my PC, they are not edited... they are the original uncropped, unmodified photo.

you're lucky your iOS5 upgrade added photo editing. did you do anything special? i have no photo editing functions on my iphone 4 after moving to iOS5. one of the main things I'd like and it didn't happen. Add the myriad problems which make my iphone4 pretty much a piece of **** now and I'd very much like to UNDO iOS5... but just wondering if you had to customize or do anything special to enable photoediting?
