Permanent had drive noise + slowless on new penryn

Hello everyone!
First of all let me excuse for my poor english.
I have an issue with my new penryn macbook pro.
Actually the hd never stop working and make noise. When i'm using an application like itunes or safari i have constantly the multicolor ring.
What should i do. Thanx!

If it's truly a brand-new machine (meaning you haven't put any software or files on it), it definitely shouldn't be giving you the spinning-beachball-of-death!
The first thing I would do is open Activity Monitor and look for any process that's consuming the CPU. Make sure you select "all processes" in the drop-down box so that you can see every daemon running. If you find a process that's using a ton of the CPU, come back and post the name of it.
Secondly, I would open Disk Utility and repair your disk permissions. While you're doing that, check the bottom of the window and look for what it says next to "S.M.A.R.T. Status" when you select your hard disk in the left panel. If it says anything other than "verified" that means your disk is most likely bad or going bad.
Thirdly, I would create a new user account, switch to that account, and see if the problems persist. If not, something is corrupted or otherwise missing/bad in your original user's library folder. If the problem continues on the new user account, this is not the issue.
Fourth, since the machine is brand-new and I assume you haven't moved all your data onto it yet, you can insert the restore DVD that came with the computer, restart while holding down the C key, and then reinstall the entire operating system from scratch. Do a completely clean install (do not use archive and install). Let the installer completely wipe your hard disk. See if the problem persists on a completely clean installation of Leopard.
And finally, if none of the above works, I would take the machine into your local Apple store, explain and demonstrate the problem, tell them about the steps you've taken to fix it, and politely ask for an exchange.

  • Disc Drive Noise in my new Penryn MacBook Pro

I just received my new MBP yesterday and the first time I inserted a disc it made a very obvious clicking sound when loading. I recently worked with a previous generation Santa Rosa 2.2 GHz MBP and its disc drive was very smooth and virtually silent. The clicking from my new MBP is too loud to not be concerned when considering that my previous MBP's drive was so smooth. I'll be going by the apple store to compare how the display models act when I insert a disc. Has anyone had or not had this experience with their MacBook Pro?

This article might shed some light: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305478
I too found my MBP's disc drive disturbingly noisy when inserting a disc, but it matches completely with Sample 1 under Inserting a disc. My older 2.16GHz MBP made less sound, similar to Sample 2. Pretty disappointing.

  • Noise in brand new Penryn MB Pro?

    Hello there,
I just replaced my aging PowerBook G4 with a brand-new MacBook Pro 15 inch, 2.6 GHz.
The machine is blazing fast, especially compared to my old laptop. Leopard really sings on this machine, and the display is just gorgeous!
My only question for others who have received these machines and have upgraded from older models is whether you have found, like I do, at least subjectively, that these machines are somewhat noisier than the G4 models they have replaced.
Specifically, hard drive access noise seems a bit more pronounced, that is, you hear more of a hollow, metallic sound coming from the laptop case. this isn't really annoying to me, it's just a bit of a difference from what I'm used to. (My machine has the 250 GB drive in it.)
Second, fan noise, or what I take to be fan noise, seems more pronounced. There is a fairly steady, low pitched hum coming from the right side of the machine, near the right speaker. Sometimes, the pitch of the common will rise, which I'm guessing is the fan speeding up.
I'm trying to figure out whether it's worth taking the machine in to the Apple Store for a once-over by one of their technicians, or is there some other kind of diagnosis I should do at home first to see if these noises are normal?
Other than that, these are gorgeous machines and I am thrilled with mine.

Well, here's the promised update, and it's rather interesting.
I was getting nervous because it appeared that after arriving at the repair depot, my laptop was just sitting there and not getting fixed. After a couple of days of no change in status on the Support website, I called, and an Apple Care representative told me that "the machine is in engineering right now, which doesn't usually happen." But he couldn't tell me what it meant.
The next day, I received an e-mail from someone in Apple Care, letting me know that Apple was going to offer me a choice of resolutions to the situation. According to the e-mail, the engineering department wanted to keep my laptop to be able to further pinpoint the cause of "the failure." If I let them keep my current machine, they would send me a *brand-new replacement laptop* of the same configuration straight from the Apple Store. However, they had no provisions for backing up or transferring whatever data is currently on the machine.
The other option I was given was to allow them to go ahead and repair my current machine. In the end, that's what I decided to do because getting a brand-new machine from the Apple store seems to be another gamble... if that one had a noisy fan, stuck pixels or some other issue, I'd be back to square one.
I promise to report back again when I have my repaired laptop back home... that should be by the early part of next week. I'm sharing this with all of you because it sounds to me as if Apple is becoming aware of some sort of manufacturing flaw in this earliest run of new laptops, causing the noise problems attested to in this thread and others. That's the only way I can explain the engineering department wanting to keep my old unit for further study.
    To be continued...

I had a repair done at the apple store where the replaced my hard drive and copied my other hard drive over to the new one.  Everything is fine except the time machine wont reconnect to my old file and is trying create a new file but not there is not enough space for both files files? Do I need to do something to have it continue to update my old file instead of recreating a new one?

Depending on what version of OSX you're running, and how the data was transferred, you may be out of luck.
If you're running Lion, and your backups were made to a directly-connected external HD (ie, not a Time Capsule or other network location), you may be able to get Time Machine to "associate" the new disk with the old backups.  See #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting, especially the pink box there.
If you're running Snow Leopard, you might be able to do a full system restore of your backups to the new HD.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #14 for detailed instructions.  That should leave a "trail" that Time Machine can follow to "associate" the new drive with the old backups.  Unfortunately, that doesn't always work, and there's no way to do it manually, as there is with Lion.

my photo's were in a 9.2.3 version of iPhoto. Now I can't move my library across. Help
    What exactly is the problem?
You are now running Mavericks. What version of iPhoto do you now have installed? If you restored  an iPhoto 9.2.3 version, it will not work with Mavericks, you first need to update iPhoto to the current version 9.5.1.  Check, if you are seeing an update on the "updates" tab of the App Store, when you sign in with your Apple iD, or on the "Purchased" tab in the "Accept" portion of the tab.
What kind of backup of your iPhoto library do you have?

  • So did the firmware update fix the 7200rpm drive noise/stalls?

Apple releases MacBook Pro hard drive firmware update
A new firmware fix for some MacBook Pro hard drives aims to stop random noises, perhaps bringing relief to some who have been plagued by clicking and beeping internal drives.
Hard Drive Firmware Update 2.0 was released Wednesday for some 7200rpm drives. It is intended for June 2009 model MacBook Pro systems. The 3.71MB update requires Mac OS X 10.5.7 and will update the drive firmware to 0007APM2. It can be downloaded direct from Apple.
Apple says the update "reduces certain infrequent noises" made by the drives. Last week, the Mac maker officially acknowledged noisy hard drives that have been plaguing some MacBook Pro owners for months. Prior to the public confirmation, some AppleCare representatives had told individual customers that the company was working on a fix.
    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/08/19/applereleases_macbook_pro_hard_drive_firmwareupdate.html

I was able to start the MacBook Pro in Target Mode. Tried to run Disc Utility from my other machine on the MacBook Pro and got the following message:
    Verifying volume "Macintosh HD"
    Invalid node structure
    Volume check failed
ERROR: Filesystem verify or repair failed.
This machine is less than 30 days old. I did the check and the updater informed me the Firmware was required. Will call Apple in the AM and get the scoop. I would NOT recommend installing the Firmware Update at this time.

  • Hard Drive noise on iMac

Seems if I tilt the monitor down more the hard drive noise gets louder... Is this a common issue with the new Intel based iMacs? I will have to check but computer was also in sleep mode for awhile so not sure if this still happens... It isn't too loud... but if it says like this it will be annoying...

Happened today on my new Macbook Pro, 15-inch i7 while editing in final cut. Has happened several times before this, as well. Never had this problem while editing on other computers, including an older Macbook Pro and also a 2.26 Ghz dual Quad Core tower.
The clip that caused the blowout had the following audio: 16-bit integer (Big Endian), Stereo, 19.2 Khz.
My sequence settings for audio are currently 16-bit, 48 Khz, Channel grouped.
Please get around to fixing this, folks at Apple. I work as an editor and I currently can't wear headphones for fear of blowing out my eardrums.

  • Fan Noise on Brand New MBP

I just got my new MBP (2.53), and I have a fan that sounds like a little lawn mower, right under the keyboard. The loudness rises and falls, but it's not subtle. It's kind of like having a mosquito buzz your ear while your working. Not a lot of fun.
I have a return for repair setup. I have not had it for more than 24 hours, butiIt was built to order with a 250 Gb hard drive, so I can't just swap it out.
I'm only posting to add a data point for others who may be wondering whether there are early-run problems with these. Mine was built on 27 October.
I've had an iBook, PowerBook, and MacBook: none of them had fan noise anything like this.

Mine was the same way. Actually, there are a number of other threads on these forums specifiing the same exact issue.
The Fan under the keyboard "Buzzed" or "Sounded like a little lawnmower" like you say for me too. Apple says they couldn't replace the fan itself because the part was too new, so instead im getting a while new computer. While this is great, it is not a solution for my problems. Now I have no computer at all while I wait for this replacement, and I might run into other issues some people are having such as a flickering screen, or dead pixels.
Oh well I guess. Our price for paying Apples outstanding premium for quality

  • PSE 9, external hard drives and moving to new computer

I had an old desktop running PSE 3, yep...3, and my husband bought me a new laptop. Laptop's operating system would not run PSE 3, so I purchased PSE 9, reconnected all my "misplaced" photo files, loaded PSE 9 on the old desktop and converted all files to 9. NOW, I am ready to move everything to the laptop and am unsure what would be best.
I have a large collection of photos and have always stored them on an external harddrive that I just plug in when needed. I purchased a second external hard drive that I am now using for backup ONLY, so I have 2 external HD's - (1) storage and (2) backup.
New laptop has PSE 9 installed and has a some newer photos in the organizer that are presently stored on the laptop harddrive. I have not done any tagging on the laptop because I didn't want to complicate matters. I now want to import my old catalog photos (stored on the external hard drive), including PSE tags. The part that causes me confusion is that I want to continue storing the photos on the external hard drive where they are. It seems counter productive to import, make new files on the laptop, then export back to where they were all along.
Gosh, I hope I'm making sense here. Anyone have any suggestions - simplest of terms, please, regarding how to get access to my photos and tags moved to the laptop if the fewest and easiest steps?

Ken, I am struggling with this. I have renamed the external harddrive with my photos, found the catalog and copied it to the external with the photos and have connected this external hard drive to the laptop (new computer).
I am now at step 5. of your first response. I have browsed and found the catalog, now my only two options are new or convert. I don't think I need to convert because I have already converted to from 3 to PSE 9 and don't really think it's a "new" catalog.
I need an "outline for dummies", please.  If I didn't have so darn many photos, I'd be tempted to just start over. If it helps, I have written tag info to my files.
Thank you for all your patience and help.

  • Should I replace my MAC hard drive or buy a new MAC?

Recently, my hard drive crashed. I have been debating whether to replace it, which is the cheapest route to go. Or should I get a new MAC. I've had my MAC since 2008, and am constanly using it. But buying a new MAC is expensive, but I feel it may be the safest route to go to aviod any other problems with my MAC. So, should a just replace the hard drive or buy a new MAC?

It would help to know which one of the different 2008 models of MacBook you have. Is it the White one or the Auminum one?
A new hard drive and maxed out RAM would keep your MacBook running with the new ones for a couple of years. Unless you're doing heavily processor intensive work like high end video editing.

Is the static sound noticeable always, or is it more when the volume is up?
Does the static noise seem to vary depending on what you are doing? (moving the mouse cursor, for example)
Was the static noise present immediately when you first powered the notebook on, or was it after using it a bit, or going online?
There is only the one driver on the site for Windows 8.1, but it may be worth reinstalling it.

  • Numbers 3 & Google Drive - My fix for newer version error

    HI there,
I recently encountered the "You need a newer version of Numbers to open this spreadsheet." error message when opening a numbers 3 spreadsheet that I hadn't used for three weeks or so.  It worked fine previously but now it didn't want to open.
I googled the problem and found that various issues can cause this error message to pop up, none of which solved my problem, until I read a post on this forum about dropbox and the new .numbers file/package that got me thinking in the right direction.
My spreadsheets are in my google drive folder, and I had previously noticed that google drive was syncing the new .numbers files as a folder containing the package rather than a single file.  This never stopped anything from opening or working so I figured this was how google was going to handle the change to numbers 3.
Newly created numbers 3 spreadsheets work fine, but older number 2.3 spreadsheets that were previously updated to numbers 3 seem to cause problems when used with google drive.  Google drive's software updated itself on my mac a little while ago, this is probably related.
MY FIX - Resync the file stored on google drive
(worked for me, backup before trying anything obviously)
Google drive must be running, I'd quit numbers too, and you need to be connected to the internet.
From your mac, move the spreadsheet out of your google drive folder onto your desktop (or wherever really).  This will move the file that google has to the bin on google drive, you'll probably get a message pop up from google drive about moving the file to the bin etc.
Now go to google drive on the web, go to your bin and find the spreadsheet you just moved/deleted.  For me this was a folder named after my spreadsheet containing the file package.  I had to sort the bin by "recently added" to find it.
Then restore the whole file/folder back to its original location:
Select the file then click "restore" or right click the file and chose restore.
Next google drive will resync this file back to your mac.  Once it was synced fully sync I could open it fine in numbers 3.  Then I trashed the old file that I moved to the desktop previously.
This method will probably work for pages and keynote files that can't be opened if they're on google drive.  I think dropbox may have updated itself to fix these, but if not then resyncing this way
