Permanently deleting files leaves originals!

I'm new to Aperture, so please bear with me, if this has been addressed. I have seen instances posted, but I am unable to find a complete solution....
My workflow:
I copy my images from my Compact Flash Card into a "Client Directory" on HD2.
Next I import the images from HD2 into Aperture.
I then cull the images by marking those that I feel are rejects by the shortcut key "9."
I then move all the rejects into Aperture's Trash Bin.
Next I'll right click the Aperture's Trash Bin and Permanently Delete all Versions and Masters.
I will then empty the system Trash Bin.
If I view my HD2 Client Folder, the trashed images are still there. The deleted "Masters" are being pulled from only the Aperture Library.
Isn't there a way to link those images in the A3 library to those copied onto my HD and have BOTH files deleted at the same time?
Thanks!

This answer could be two things:
1) You are importing managed masters (the option during import is "into the aperture library". If so when you empty the Aperture trash those master are put in your system trash. The issue is that you never got rid of the import files from the original directory in the first place because the import option used COPIES files into the library.
2) You imported them as referenced - one of several import options will do this. Namely - "leave files where they are" or something like that. In this case when you empty the trash you should get a dialog asking you if you want to remove referenced files - check that box. If you are not getting the dialog asking you try resetting your warnings via prefs.

  • Re: Restoring deleted files/restoring originals

Hi! I was wondering if anyone could help me with restoring deleted files. I think I have someway or another managed to delete my original photos from iPhoto. Is there any way that I am able to restore these deleted files? If I haven't deleted them (who knows!) how do I restore my files to the original, as a lot of my photos in iPhoto are not opening. Also, I have 'lost' an iDVD project that I know that I have not deleted, but I cannot seem to find it anywhere.
    Thanks, Fiona

    Hi fiona,
what did you do that you think you might have deleted photos?
Did you rename any photos in the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder?
navigate to Pictures/iPhoto Library and go through the Year/Month/day folders and see if your photos are there. Take a look at the screenshot so you know where to look.
This is a view of how the iPhoto Library looks in the Finder.
It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also.

  • How do I PERMANENTLY delete files I have deleted?

''Duplicate post, continue here - [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/806424]''
I have deleted files, but cannot find the way to permanently delete these filles. Previously there was an icon that read: Empty Recycle Bin. I cannot find the recycle bin.

Your situation is not good, then. You will need to erase your hard drive and start anew. Boot from your installer DVD for the OS X version you have installed on it.
I hope you have backups because it's not likely you can backup at this point.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc.  Insert the disc into the
optical drive and restart the computer.  After the chime press and hold down the
"C" key.  Release the key when you see a small spinning gear appear below the
             dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, set the format type to Mac
OS Extended (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Partition button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.

  • Permanently Deleteing Files

    A) I am not an idiot. That said...
    B) I recently upgraded to iTunes 6.0. When I used to remove/delete a song from the library a second dialogue box would come up asking me if I wanted to permanently delete the song/file off my hard drive. From what I can tell 6.0 no longer has the option of permanently deleteing a song/file off the hard drive. I'm only given the option of "clearing" the song/file which only removes it from iTunes not from my hard drive. I've tried multiple addional keys (Shift, Ctrl, Atl, Etc.) and combinations thereof and hitting the delete key, but alas still no luck.
Anyone have any ideas/workarounds? Other then just deleting the files manually.
    RC

    Hello Richard,
I came to the discussion base to find the same exact answer and came across your message. I wanted to delete a few songs from iTunes, my hard drive, and from my iPod. What I did, and I know you said you tried it and did not work, but what I did was selected the range of songs I wanted to delete and then hit the Delete key, it then asked if I wanted to move the files to the recycle bin or delete them. It also mentioned that if the files did not reside in the iTunes directory, it would not delete them. Then after that it wiped them all out, from the drive, iPod, and hard drive...
Try it again or maybe see if there is an update to iTunes 6 that you might be missing...

  • How to permanently delete files from trash?

I usually see TV series online. Every time I visit to the website, it automatically downloads a Mac_Installer file to my Downloads folder. I delete the file without opening it and secure empty the trash. When I visit the website again, the same file is downloaded to my Downloads folder, and the "previous deleted file" from the trash can reappears on it. How to solve this matter? My computer is a MacBook Pro and is running OS X Mavericks.
    Thanks.

Try erasing free space using Disk Utility.
    Erase free disk space
When you delete files in Mac OS X, your Mac deletes the information used to access the deleted files but doesn't physically remove them. Although the space used by the deleted files appears as free space, the deleted files remain on the disk until new files are written over them. As a result, these files can be recovered. Erasing free space does not delete any other files on your disk besides the ones that you already deleted.
After the drive is connected, launch the Disk Utility application in any of the following ways:
Type the first few letters of its name into Spotlight. Select it from the results.
Go Finder > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Go Launchpad > Utilities > Disk Utility
Once you are in the Disk Utility app, select the disk or partition you would like to erase from the left.
    Select the Erase tab.
Choose the Erase Free Space button.
Use the Slider to choose how many times you would like to write over the free space.
    Select Erase Free Space.
Note: After this process starts, you can cancel it at any time without harming any of your data. You might see a message stating that you are running out of disk space. This is normal and to be expected. You can ignore this message.
When the process is complete, you should have the same amount of free space. If you do not have the same amount of free space, try restarting the computer.
    I hope I helped.

  • How do I permanently delete files  from Nano?

I manually deleted songs and videos from my Nano because I didn't want them anymore. I even deleted those same files from iTunes when my Nano wasn't connected. But now, whenever I sync my Nano with iTunes, those files end up right back on my iPod. How can I stop those deleted files from being put back into my iPod?

    I deleted from the playlist
If you delete them from a playlist it only deletes then from that specific playlist.
Note that Library -> Music is not a playlist. It is the library.
To remove items from iTunes, delete them from the library or *Shift Delete* from a playlist to remove it from that playlist and the library.
It will then also ask to delete from the hard drive (which is not the library), if it is in the iTunes media folder shown in iTunes prefs -> Advanced.

  • How do I permanently delete file(s) in CS5 in Windows 7?

    In Windows this is Shift-Delete.
I can only get 'Send .... to the Recycle Bin' in Bridge CS5.

This just offers to send the file to the Recycle Bin in Windows. May be this is the only option in Mac?
Don't worry though. I have settled on BreezeBrowser and PhotoDirector to replace Bridge and Camera Raw.

  • How can I permanently delete files from my Mac before I give it away?

I would like to get rid of any pictures, term papers, emails, but keep the Adobe Photoshop on there that I downloaded from iTunes. I'm sure someone would enjoy it.

Well, except you have no right to include purchased commercial software with it unless you also delete that software from your other machines and never use it again yourself (and you need to include any original purchased media for the software along with it).  You purchased a license for you to use it, not for you to sell or give it to someone else to also use.
Also, since you bought the software online from Apple, it is permanently tied to your AppleID, so nobody else could ever update it, or re-download it if needed anyway.
As far as getting rid of the machine, the best approach is to completely erase and re-install the base OS you bought it with.  That will erase all your information and data and give the new owner a nice clean slate to start with so they can set it all up as they wish to.

  • I can't permanently delete files from my macbook

I looked at my disk utility and then used an app to tell me what files are taking up the most space. As I'm looking back there are a whole bunch of files that I uninstalled and deleted. Those files are still listed as taking up space. When I search in spotlight the files aren't listed on the computer at all but are still ''taking up space''. These files were like adobe trials, apps, music, and videos that I no longer wanted on my laptop. I'm still confused as to how they are still listed there. How do I get rid of these files???

Did you empty the trash after deleting the files?

  • How to delete files, leave folders?

I have a folder in my documents folder that I would like to clean up. It contains many folders and sub-folders (directories and sub-directories) in a many layers deep arrangement. I would like to delete only the files while preserving the folders and sub-folders (makes backing up and synchronising a LOT easier).
I am not using Time machine.
    Help appreciated.
(If it is easier to just delete the main folder and then copy back just the folders from the back-up drive, please help me figure out how.)

    Terminal session
    find /path/to/starting/directory ! -type d -exec rm -f {} \;
As has been mentioned before, this is a dangerous operation, so MAKE SURE you have the starting directory correct.
    Best to test first using
    find /path/to/starting/directory ! -type d -ls
Then use the remove file version.

  • Time capsule and time machine - permanently deleting files to make space

This may have an obvious answer - I recently bough TC and set up TM. Since TM backsups everything, what do I do if I want to delete a file forever, and never want it to be backed up in TM and take up space in TC? thanks

How are you trying to access these "old" files? That is are you trying to access them through Time Machine or directly from the Time Capsule using the Finder?

  • How do I delete files permanently from a usb flash key? On my mac (Yosemite 10.10) it's telling me the files are deleted, however on plugging key into television they're still there

I've a problem I've never come across before and it's how to permanently delete files on a usb flash key? I've just migrated from using Windows for 15 years onto Apple iMac and had been deleting files easily and permanently from the key on Windows without any hassle and thought I'd done the same on my iMac but seemingly they're still there as the tele is showing them when key is plugged in, BUT they can not be seen on iMac. I wondered why the key wouldn't take anymore files after, what I thought was, deletion and now I know why-imac hasn't deleted them!
I've actually gone into Disk Utility and formatted the key in it's usual FAT32 format to finally delete the files.  Anyone any ideas as to why this happens and how to solve this please?
    Many thanks

In addition to what Drew wrote, remember the Mac has a data fork and a resource fork.
Here is an old thread but a nice recap by Dr. Smoke
    ._Files
Note that the ._file files you note are the resource forks of Mac files you copied to the drive from your Mac, and these are only visible when you use the Flash drive on a PC. These are normal and indicate the Flash drive is already formatted for Windows.
When you copy or save a file from a Mac OS X system to a Windows shared volume or a Windows-formatted disk, the Mac creates two files: the data fork (xxx) and the resource fork (._xxx). This is called Apple Double Format and is normal. The resource fork contains additional data about the file that is exclusive to the Mac that cannot be saved otherwise on Windows-formatted disks. This is new with Mac OS X, as documented in Mac OS X: Apple Double Format Creates File Name With the Prefix '._'.
The resource fork files (._xxx) are necessary if you want to copy the file back to the Mac and retain the metadata. The resource forks of files are invisible when they are used on the Mac: the Mac OS Extended file system (aka HFS Plus or HFS+) uses forked files, with a file having both data and resource forks.
You can delete the resource forks on the Windows disk if and only if you don't care about losing the resource fork information should you copy them back to the Mac, such as comments, image preview icon, etc. Some Mac applications use the resource fork data, so deleting the resource fork can be problematic if you copy the file back to the Mac. Likewise moving the file while not also moving its associated resource fork when using the data on a PC can result in problems when using some files again on the Mac.
You can't prevent the resource forks from being created if you copy or save files from the Mac to the Windows share or Windows-formatted disk via Finder.

  • How can I Delete files from LTR5 to move to Trash On OS 10.8.4?

    my set up is
mac 0s 10.8.4 using mac book pro 2.7 GHZ with 16GB having Lacie usb 3 thunderbolt external drive storing photos and LTR 5 catalogue to do my LTR processing of 24 mg files from D600 SLR
I have the LTR5 installed and am using it only to find out cannot move file(s) to Trashcan( MAC latest version) that doesn’t support the volume I have the photo files in. LTR5 only will permanently delete them via LTR5 only . Its an annoying step to rid the file – Is this a Bug? LTR 4 moves file(s) directly to Trash with no issues. The other LTR versions had no problem .
I don’t recall LTR5Beta having this issue when trying to move file to trash. I was beta tester .
LTR dialogue also says , file could not be moved to Trash folder as volume isnt supported . I have checked all preference panes to see if i can open up the trash to LTR5 discarded Files from my lacie drive where they are stored  . Often I'll move  files to trash then retrieve later from trash to import back into catalogue.
It was suggested trying new “test” catalogue .So. I created new catalogue which acted same way; failure to move files to trash.
As result , I have created a ” new” Trash folder within LTR5 to move discarded Files into temporary holding space; then, empty the folder contents within LTR5 as needed.
It’s awkward , inefficient . But, it is a temporary solution in holding files until  its decided to permanently delete files. This is a short term solution till Issue is corrected.
Does anyone else have this problem? Suggestions?

Thank you for sharing this thread #Post 31. Ill try permissions tweaking and see of that works .
This was a first for me being a beta tester for LTR5 . I do  wonder when I bought the  upgrade and Downloaded LTR5  that bug  appeared  beacuse of being a beta tester .
Trying to rule out all sorts of things here :
Wonder if  doing a  an uninstall  and doing a reinstall will help?  Would it be a realistic painless step?
Yesterday I worked on LTR editing files from Hard drive  many hours with bug active .
Then all of sudden it was working ( Th1s is 3rd time its happened). If I close LTR5 then reopen later bug  appears again. I cant yet isolate the cause for  files to move and be trashed normallly!  Earlier I have trashed prefs .  Also, creating test catalogues didnt work . Tried other older drives; that failed. Will try internal drive.
LTR 4 and earlier was bugfree so this is first time i have encountered a stubborn bug . Its as bad as mosquitoes buzzing.
Wonder if the reinstall is best guaranteed solution other than uncheck my permissions.?
I really appreciate the info from thread 31. Thank you .
      I'll get the bug booted.

  • DELETING FILES PERMAMNENTLY FROM HARD DRIVE AND PASSWORD PROTECTING

DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO PERMANENTLY DELETE FILES FROM THE HARD DRIVE? ALSO, WHAT ARE THE STEPS TO ADD A PASSWORD TO A FOLDER?
    THANKS!

#1) Please check your caps lock key which seems to be on and many perceive as shouting your questions.
#2) Use secure empty trash when you want secure deleting.
#3) There isn't a folder password feature. There's a utility which will let you hide folders with a password, but that is easily circumvented. Then there's making password protected, encrypted image files. The second is very secure but it isn't a folder, it appears as a new volume on your desktop.
