Permanently Disabling Spotlight in Leopard

I've tried the Tiger method (editing the hostconfig file and also turning it off from mdiutil) but no success.
Since Spotlight doesn't encrypt its indexes, it's somewhat of a security risk for FileVault users.
Anybody figure out how to do this for Leopard?
I'm assuming another method would be to create a startup script that would turn off indexing and securely erase any spotlight databases that might exist.

I created a file named fxg97873.txt, which is unique on my system. I then used Disk Utility to create three disk images containing this file:
* 40 MB read/write
* 40 MB read/write encrypted
* read only (using File > New > Disk Image From Folder)
I then deleted the file and emptied the trash. With none of the images mounted, Spotlight does not find the file:
$ mdfind fxg97873
$
With any of the images mounted, Spotlight finds the file by name, but not by content, because indexing is disabled:
$ mdfind fxg97873
/Volumes/spotlight test/fxg97873.txt
$ mdfind 1199931
$ sudo mdutil -s /Volumes/spotlight\ test
/Volumes/spotlight test:
Status: Indexing Disabled
If I enable indexing, it creates an index and can find the file by content:
$ sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/spotlight\ test
/Volumes/spotlight test:
Indexing enabled for volume.
$ ls -al /Volumes/spotlight\ test
drw------- 8 willeke willeke 272 Oct 28 11:55 .Spotlight-V100
$ mdfind 1199931
/Volumes/spotlight test/fxg97873.txt
However, I cannot enable indexing for the read-only image:
$ sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/spotlight\ test\ -\ read\ only
/Volumes/spotlight test - read only:
Could not set indexing status for volume.
I did these tests on 10.4.10, as I don't have a 10.5 system handy, but I think the results would be the same. As for NTFS, I would expect it to behave similarly to the read-only disk image.

  • Any way to PERMANENTLY disable spotlight search (without others being able to simply change the settings whenever they wish?)

    Or perhaps password protect my setting preferences to make sure they can only be changed by me? This questions relates to the new ipad 4 with retina display!

    One more thought:  You might consider using guided access when lending out your iPad.
    From the iPad User Manual:
    Guided Access Guided Access helps someone using iPad to stay focused on a particular task. Guided Access limits iPad to a single app, and lets you control which app features are available. Use Guided Access to:
    Temporarily restrict iPad to a particular app
    Disable areas of the screen that aren’t relevant to a task, or areas where an accidental gesture might cause a distraction
    Disable the iPad hardware buttons
    There's more in the manual about how to set this up if you're interested.  Maybe that would accomplish your objective.

  • How do I disable Spotlight?

    Spotlight is currently driving me mad!
    Certain key commands in Photoshop/Illustrator activate Spotlight when I don't want it activated.
    Frankly, I never use Spotlight anyway. If I need to find anything, Apple-F suits my needs perfectly well.
    So is there any way of permanently disabling Spotlight?

    Unfortunately the people who drop into threads with arcane terminal commands don't seem to realize that the vast majority of users do NOT want to deal with a command line. You are correct to be terrified of Terminal if you don't know precisely what you are doing. There are free utilities to accomplish almost anything a terminal session can do. One such utility is Onyx and the latest version can disable Spotlight if you so choose. These utilities basically enter the unix commands for you by just clicking the desired action. You do not have to futz around with the Terminal application.
    But take a closer look at Mike N.'s advice first.

  • Disabling Spotlight on Secondary Drive in Leopard For Free

    How to do this without buying third-party software? Is it possible? I've searched these forums and only found that you need to buy a $13 software.

  • Can you disable Spotlight?

    I've long ago disabled the Dashboard function via an option in the OnlyX program as I never used it and the whole "widget" thing seems pointless to me.
    Is there a way to disable Spotlight which is not permanent and reversible as I rarely use the Spotlight function and have read on various forums that the Spotlight application is a bit of a memory hog and by disabling it can improve overall performance, is this true?
    I'm sure there's some plug-in/ application that can do the job, but I'd rather not have to buy a software bundle and that most probably can be done in the Terminal window.
    Any help much appreciated.

    Actually there is another way you can disable Spotlight. You'll need to use Terminal.
    To disable Spotlight permanently type:
    % sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
    To disable Spotlight without doing it permanently:
    % sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
    To enable it permanently:
    % sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
    To enable it without doing it permanently:
    % sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist

  • How to permanently disable this message: "Press Esc to exit full screen." (by Adobe Flash Player) in Mac's Safari Browser?

    Hello everyone,
    I have been searching for sometime (without any success) for a solution to permanently remove this annoying message: "Press Esc to exit full screen."
    Whenever I go to full screen mode, watching any video on YouTube, BBC, CNN (or many other websites which use Adobe Flash Player for streaming video) I have to bare seeing this message for several seconds until it fades away. Seeing this message once or twice would have been okay, but as we all watch many videos on a daily basis on internet, after weeks, months and now years seeing this message over and over again many times every day, it becomes very annoying, and I find myself rewinding many videos to their beginning after this message fades away to be able to watch it from the beginning without anything obstructing it!
    Does anyone know how to "permanently" disable this message from appearing?
    I am using the latest version of Safari 6.0 on the latest version of OS X (Mountain Lion 10.8.1), and have the latest version of Adobe Flash Player (Plug-in version 11.4.402.265) installed on my new MacBook Pro 15" with Retina Display.
    Thanks,
    Ally

    Thanks Carolyn,
    I am attaching a screenshot here for you to see that this setting was already set to what you suggested. I didn't need to change it as it was like this even before I post this message.
    So the problem still presists and unfortunately your suggestion is not a solution to this probelm.
    Last night I did more reseach and found a discussion in Adobe website, it seems a lot of other people have the same issue, and even started a discussion in Adobe website about it. But unfortunately Adobe refuses to address it and enable the end user at least to have an option to turn this message off from displaying permanently on his/her computer.
    I am writing down the url links for the two posts regarding this issue on Adobe's website:
    Link #1: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/921270
    Link #2: https://bugbase.adobe.com/index.cfm?event=bug&id=3058752
    Hopefully more people will get involved and ultimately we will either get Adobe's attention, or someone will find a "hack" and post it here for all of us. I have found some suggested "hacks" for Windows environment (you can simply google it, I am sure you will find them too). But so far I haven't seen anything for Mac's Safari browser.
    Cheers,
    Ally

  • How can I permanently disable the "fn" key?

    Hi.  My subject says it all.  How can I permanently disable the "fn" key?
    At first I thought I had a virus or something because when I typed only weird symbols came out.  Then I reset the computer.  Then I couldn't even log in.  I tried Time Machine etc.
    Then I realized that the "fn" key wasn't working right.  It seems to be working backwards.  It acts like it's being pushed when it's not, and when I do push it it acts like it's not being used.
    So it's kind of a simple problem but it's really annoying.
    Is there a way I can just disable it permanently?  Even physical force if necessary.  I tried to break it but it wouldn't break.  I don't really use the key anyway so it doesn't really matter.  I don't want to pay a bunch of money to replace a key I don't even use.
    Thanks.  I hope someone knows.

    That's the best answer.  Yeah usually if you press "fn" or "option" you can get it to work for awhile.
    Yeah I have considered some kind of external keyboard also.  It will make a laptop less laptopish.  But it could do the job for awhile.
    It's sad because I don't even care about the "fn" or "option" keys.
    But anyway it's not catastrophic at least.
    And yeah maybe we can get a new computer later or something.  I like mine though.  It's customized and is how I like it right now.
    Anyway thanks for the reply.

    I have the same problem with mine... but im trying to find a way to fix it without restoring it...
    but one fix is to shut it down completely ... then press and hold BOTH the power button and the home button .. hold both of those 4 ten seconds .. then release the power button but still hold down the home button .. and then it'll show something that says "connect to itunes" once u get it connected to itunes , click the restore button ... BEWARE THIS WILL WIPE OUT EVERYTHING ON YOUR IPOD!!! IT WILL RESTORE IT BACK TO FACTORY SETTINGS , AS IF U JUST BOUGHT IT !!!!! then it should work fine again .. but u will lose all data on there besides the things you have synced with itunes already..
    Thats y im iffy with doing this , im trying to find a fix where i wont have 2 restore it but i dont think there is 1 :'(
    good luck tho

  • How to permanently disable comment popup hint in Adobe Reader X?

    I wish to permanently disable the popup that says  "Click on Comment and Share to create, mark-up and send PDF files.":
    It is getting annoying having to always click it to remove it when viewing a new PDF file in Fullscreen mode.
    How can I acheive this?
    Is there a setting in the preferences or a key in the registry that I can modify?

    You're right. I've tested on a couple of computers now and the problem seems to be isolated to one computer with a particular software setup. On the others it works as you describe.
    You would'nt by any chance know where this "don't show the bubble"-setting is stored after clicking the cross for the first time? Is it in the registry?

  • How do you permanently disable Tool Pane from showing up every time you open a pdf document in Adobe Reader DC 2015?

    Just like 9.9/10 people out here in the real world, I use Adobe Reader to read pdf files and never (ever) use the Tool Pane for anything.
    How do I permanently disable it from showing up, instead of having to close it *each & every time* I open a pdf document? The majority of people don't want thins thing covering up the page they are trying to read.

    Okay, seems I've stumbled upon an ugly workaround but it works for me. I'm using Windows 8.1. Go to the install directory, i.e." C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat Reader DC\Reader\AcroApp\ENU". Create a new subfolder (I used "Disabled"). Move 3 files from the "ENU" folder into the new "Disabled" folder: AppCenter_R.aapp & Home.aapp & Viewer.aapp. Open a PDF and no more Tool Pane! I originally moved just the "Viewer" file but if you clicked on "Home" or "Tools" on the toolbar you couldn't go back to the "Document." Moving all 3 files takes care of that issue. Like a lot of people I don't and won't ever use any of the tools. I just want a reader. Let me know if this works for you.

  • How to hide/disable Spotlight on a client by using Workgroup Manager

    Dear Apple Pro's
    I'm looking for a script or Policy whatever to hide/disable spotlight on a client. Iam using WGM for policy's to disable some applications, but I can not find an option disable spotlight on a client. I hide a lot directory's systemfiles but if I type in the spotlight "terminal" on the client and click on it the terminal will start.
    I've 400 iMacs on a school it makes me desperate.
    Hope to hear from you pro's!

    One possible solution might be to change the permissions on the Spotlight app on all client machines. The command would be:
    sudo chmod 600 /System/Library/CoreServices/Search.bundle/Contents/MacOS/Search
    That way only root can run Spotlight. One may be able to roll that out via a startup script, too.

  • My ipad 2 has permanent disabled due to passcode what can I do

    My ipad 2 has permanent disabled due to passcode what can I do

    If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup).
    If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present.
    You may have to force iPad into Recovery Mode
