Permanently save line spacing in a multi-line text field

Me: Adobe Acrobat 8 Pro, Windows Vista
(I think the people who will be using the form have Reader 7 on Windows)
I work in a doctors' clinic, and we use phone message sheets to document conversations between the patients/us/nurses/doctors, and I scanned the form and made it into a fillable PDF for our secretaries to fill out more quickly. The "message" area has pre-printed lines on it, and the multi-line text field I placed there needs to match up to the lines. I used the Rich Text Formatting options to set it to "Exactly 24 Points," but I can't get it to KEEP the formatting permanently. The only way I could get it to save the formatting in that field was to put a space in it and then save it, and then give that to the 2 phone secretaries. It works perfectly the first time, but instead of just closing/re-opening the file to start a new message, one of the secretaries highlights everything in the "message" field and deletes it... which deletes the line spacing formatting. I've told her
b numerous
times to leave that starting space in the field, but she "forgets" so all of her messages look messed up. So is there a way to force that line spacing
b PERMANENTLY
???? Here's a shrunken screenshot of the field -- I wish I could just erase the lines altogether so the spacing wouldn't matter, but the secretaries type/print the message out, then the nurses/docs write on the page with pen so the lines have to stay. http://img187.imageshack.us/my.php?image=notepreviewph8.jpg
Thanks!

You can set the font size of the text. Then play with the underlines in the original document to match the needs of the font that is used. Print to a new PDF and then use replace pages to put the new page into the form without changing the form fields. I was able to do this with a word processing document by adding underlining in the document with 12 pt and setting the font to 12 pt in the text field. You can play with the font, the border of the field, and the underlining in the original document to get the desired result. Is this optimal, probably not. However it does the job.

  • Why is the multi-line option not allowed in my text fields? Acrobat X Pro

    I have created a form in which I wish to make mulit-line fields. To create the original fields, I used auto field detect, then copied and pasted them to repeat in a chart. None of these fields allow me to select the multi-line and scroll text options I need (including the first auto-detected ones). When I draw a new field, it allows me to apply multi-line and scroll text. Any idea whay these first fields arent allowing the same? thanks!

    ah! found it - the option for Comb of Characters was checked, thus greying out the other options. Thanks anyway!

  • How do you set the line spacing when using the Append Text Table to Report VI?

    I have a table of numbers which I wish to print using the report generation VI's. Since each column has a different numerical format, I first convert the number for each cell to a string with the appropriate format and then build a string array to pass to the Append Text Table to Report VI. The table is printed with double line spacing. How do I reset this for single spacing?

    Dave,
    The issue is not with the NI-Reports functionality, but the Array to Spreadsheet String funvtion in the for loop. Here is the context help for this function:
    "Converts an array of any dimension to a table in string form, containing tabs separating column elements, a platform-dependent EOL character separating rows, and, for arrays of three or more dimensions, headers separating pages."
    The thing to note here is that it says it adds an EOL (end of line) character at the end of every row. This is what is happening. Your first column of data has a \r\n in it and adds the second row to each data item. This in turn makes the rest of the columns have a larege blank space at the bottom so that all of the cell heights are equal. I w
    ould re-write that little bit of code so that you just do one large string concatenation of number, spaces, number, spaces, number and this should solve your issue.

  • How do I get multiple lines to print for a blank text field so that it can be filled in by hand?

    I have to design forms that are fillable electronically and by hand.  The problem that I am running in to is supplying multiple lines that will print for people that are hand filling the form.  I have tried to add an image of lines behind the text field, but these would get in the way when the form was filled in electronically.
    I am using LiveCycle Designer ES2 v. 9.0 on a Windows machine.
    Thanks.

    Ok.
    Take a textfield
    Go to Object | Allow multiple lines
    Go to Layout | Height | activate "Expand to fit"
    Go to the initialize-Event or readyform (You have to change the _ for your textfield)     this.rawValue = "___________\n___________\n___________";
    Go to the enter-Event   this.rawValue = null;
    Go to the exit-Event
              if(this.rawValue == null)
                    this.rawValue = "___________\n___________\n___________";
              }else{}
    With this solution you can simulate the same as pattern see above.
    I hope this is helpfull for you,

  • Yes/No fields, single line. Long question in seperate text field. How to avoid gap between lines?

    I have made two single-choice fields side by side (Yes and No) on one single line. The question for the choices is long, so I wrote it in a separate text field placed above the Yes and No fields. If I use the Yes field for the question, the No field would end up too far to the right.
    Question ....
    [Single-choice text fields space]
    [  ] Yes
    [  ] No
    Problem now is there's too much space under the question, since the automatic text fields in the Yes and No fields are still there, though "invisible"/not used. How can I have a long question on a single line and have the Yes and No fields on the next line without a big gap between the two lines? Is it possible to delete the automatic text field in the Yes and No fields?
    Just realised that if one makes a single Yes field, and a single No field to the right, you are ("of course") able to mark both the fields, since they are not linked anymore as with two choices in one field. The point with the single choice fields is then lost; to be able to choose only either one. Yes or No.
    [X] Yes   [X] No

    The Single Choice is designed such that you have a single label and multiple choices, but the user can only select a single choice (in your case Yes or No).  If you like the choices to appear side by side you can deselect Stack Choices Vertically in the Field Properties widget.  You should also set the Label to Above.  See the attached image.

  • "Line Spacing" vs. leading

    How does "Line Spacing" in static or dynamic text fields
    (explicitliy set in the "Formatting Options" window) compare w/
    "leading" when creating a text field w/ AS?
    Is a "Line Spacing" setting of 10 the same as my_fmt.leading
    = 10;?
    In a Flash 7 file I'm trying to get the spacing between lines
    in an AS-created text field to be closer than default, but it seems
    that leading can be a positive value. But if a similar static field
    looks good w/ Line Spacing set at 0, why is there no equivalent w/
    leading?

    To clarify... If the query row is omitted from the
    indexed/array notation, then isValid() and <cfparam />
    produce different results.
    In the attached code example below, the query row was omitted
    intentionally to illustrate.
    Two possible solutions are:
    1) Make isValid() throw an error (so that they both throw an
    error)
    2) Make <cfparam /> not throw an error (so that they
    both do not throw an error)
    I feel the behavior should be consistent. Does anyone feel
    otherwise? If the behavior should be consistent, then which
    solution, or other solution, is preferred?
    Let's discuss!

    Also any way of having ruled lines appear in the multi row text field?

  • Word doc import/export and line spacing differences with Pages '09

    When I save or open a Word .doc, the default line spacing differences messes up the document formatting, the document ends up being more pages in Pages than when I open in Word:Mac.
    One work around I learned about on this forum is to set the line spacing to "exact" in Pages. This is okay, except many Word documents have subtle line spacing before or after paragraphs and/or different size fonts in the document that affects line spacing. Setting Pages line spacing to exact makes a mess of these documents.
    Why can't Apple build a proper line spacing function into Pages so it is more compatible with Word? If they are touting compatibility, they need to make a disclaimer in their advertising as only simple documents seem to work without issues.
    Is there a better work around available?
    Thanks.
    Bud

    Bud,
    It seems that there is incompatibility in the before and after spacing (Ctrl + 0 in Word for Windows adds 12 points, if I remember correctly).
    Since you mention a .doc file, it makes me think you have a Word 2003 or earlier format. I have a couple of suggestions:
    1. If you have access to Word 2007 or Word 2008 for Mac, try saving in .docx. Basically, a .docx is compliant with Office Open XML, the ECMA standard that is the basis for the document formats in Microsoft Office 2007 and Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac.
    [Note: The Office Open XML ECMA standard, or OOXML is a source of polemic since it was donated by Microsoft and competes with Open Document Format, or ODF. You can find more here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OfficeOpen_XML#Implementations_of_new_2008version
    and Microsoft has stated they'll support the newer standard and retrofit Office 2007. Let's hope they do the same for Office 2008 for Mac and that Apple picks up as well with an upgrade for Pages '09 or in Pages '10]
    2. If the above does not work, I would suggest reporting this to Apple. This would indicate a compatibility problem in Office Open XML compliance, which should be independent of Word itself. A way to support this claim would be to test it in another word processor that adds space before and after a paragraph and that supports OOXML, which I think would be too much I would not bother reporting it for a Word 2003 format because it is proprietary.
    Hope it helps.

  • Line Spacing in text field.

    Hi,
    I have added many text fields to my pdf document. Some of them need following:
    1.
    Adjust the line spacing between two lines.
    2.
    Make the text "justified".
    I can not find any way to accomplish these things. Can anyone tell me how to do these things?
    Thanks,
    Vijay

    Geo,
    Are you talking about check box "Allow Rich Text Formatting" in the Text Field Properties dialog box? I have it checked.
    But still it does not give me ability to adjust line spacing or "justify"ing the text.
    Thanks,
    Vijay

  • AutoSize not working properly in TextField when using non-zero line spacing

    When using non-zero line spacing, the autoSize property is not functioning as expected, causing text fields to scroll that shouldn't.  Also, when using device fonts, the sizes of the TextFields are wrong in the Flash IDE.
    I have a TextField whose height is supposed to be dynamic, depending the width of the TextField.  wordWrap is true, the text is left aligned, and the autoSize value is flash.text.TextFieldAutoSize.LEFT.
    When the TextField's width is adjusted, the height increases or decreases as expected, but when I scroll the mouse wheel over the TextField, it allows a single line to scroll out of view.  This should not be happening.  The autoSize property should ensure the TextField is large enough to neither require nor allow scrolling.
    Has anyone else encountered this issue or know how to fix it?
    Update: Been a problem since at least 2006! > http://blog.nthsense.net/?p=46
    http://www.kirupa.com/forum/showthread.php?288955-Disabling-textfield-scrolling   Bug is caused by using a line height ("line spacing" in Flash) larger than zero, for example 1.0pt.  It looks like when I reduce the line spacing of the text field to zero, the issue goes away.  There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with how autoSize is calculating the required height of the text (i.e. it is exactly textHeight + 4 pixel gutter, and drawing the rectangle (2,2,textWidth,textHeight) aligns visually with the text), so it must have to do with how the TextField is deciding whether it needs to scroll or not, and that separate calculation is being thrown off by the non-zero line spacing.  The additional non-zero spacing at the end of the last line could be making the TextField think it needs to scroll, even though it's hight is sufficient at "textHeight + 4".  Apparently the problem manifests when using a non-zero leading value as well.
    In fact, it has to be related to the leading value exactly, since the following code stops the textfield from scrolling.
    //body is TextField
    var tlm:TextLineMetrics = body.getLineMetrics(body.numLines - 1);
    trace(tlm.leading); //traces "1" here.  traces zero when line spacing is zero, and traces larger values with larger line spacing values
    body.autoSize = flash.text.TextFieldAutoSize.NONE; //turn off autosize so the height can be set manually
    body.height += tlm.leading; //increase height of textfield by leading value of last line to cause scrolling to be turned off.
    Honestly, this is pretty unacceptable bug.  First of all, scrolling should not be sensitive to trailing line spacing, because autoSize and textHeight do not include it. It need to be consistent, and I think textHeight and autoSize setting height = textHeight + 4 is correct.  Vertical scrolling should use textHeight as it's guage for whether scrolling is necessary, but instead, it's obviously involving the leading values of the last line.  At the very least, vertical scrolling should simply be disabled when autoSize is turned on and wordWrap is true, because the TextField should be big enough to fit all the text.  The workaround of manually adjusting the height is also no good, since turning autoSize back on will immediately change the size back and trigger scrolling again.  I also shouldn't have to set line spacing to zero just to use the autoSize feature, since the scrolling calculations are wrong in this way.

    No, lol.  Luckly, I replace most of my TextFields on the display list with my subclass TextFieldEx.  I just call a clone method that accepts a TextField and returns a TextFieldEx with identical properties.
    I corrected the problem via modifying the subclass to behave differently when autoSize is not NONE and wordWrap is true.  Under those conditions, the maxScrollV and scrollV property values are fixed at 1, and the class listens for its own SCROLL event and sets scrollV to 1 when it occurs.  That allows me to leave everything else alone, including text selection, and use whatever line spacing I want.
    The modification seems to work fine so far.
    For anyone interested in doing something similar, here is a clone method that will copy a TextField.
    public static function clone( t:TextField ):TextFieldEx
                                  var te:TextFieldEx = create( "", t.width, t.type, t.multiline, t.wordWrap, t.selectable, t.embedFonts, t.defaultTextFormat );

  • Text Line Spacing Question

    Hi, I am creating a book in aperture 2.0 and am having some trouble adjusting the line spacing in a newly created text box. The default text book in the template has a line space of +5. I have created my own text box for another page and the line spacing is +1.
    How do i change this to +5 to match the default. I cant find the option anywhere.
    Thanks in advance.
    PS. I find version 2 much nippier than 1.5.6.

    Bruce:
    Thank you for your reply. I generally set all the default margins to "0". I'll adjust the margins for paragraph indentations.
    I'm not sure how to describe the problem better than in my original posting, but I'll try.
    Suppose a form which looks like a contract with headings, single unchanging sentences and dynamic paragraphs.
    Suppose you create a Text Field object, and you use the Concat function. Suppose that you created multiple very long sentences using Concat in that same Text Field. You could use the paragraph window to set the line spacing at 1, 1.5 or 2.
    Set the line spacing at 2.
    Suppose you create a Text object that was either a heading or a sentence or two in length.
    Suppose there are both multiple Text Field and Text objects throughout the document.
    My is issue is lining up the line spacing so it is consistent double spaced throughout the document where there are multiple Text and Text Field objects. If I just look at it, my line spacing is close but far from consistent.
    I set my Text Objects and Text Fields at .25in throughout the whole document and that gets me an approximation of 1.5 line spacing, but that is still only close.
    Thanks for any additional thoughts.

  • Multi-line String - Match Regular Expression

    I am trying to figure out the format of a regular expression in order to pull select lines out of a multi-line string and populate those lines as individual elements of a string array while using Match Regular Expression. The overall length of the multi-line string can vary as well as the text contained within the string. The string can contain letters, numbers, and special characters. I have attached an example VI. Within the example VI I only want to return the lines beginning with "Device #" into the array. The number of lines beginning with "Device #" can vary but I want to capture them all.
    Or is there a better function to use instead of Match Regular Expression that will give me the desired outcome?

    Match Regular Expression works well for this.

  • Strange line spacing - space seems bigger every second line

    Hi,
    today I discoverd that pages 08 does something special with line spacing. Every second line in my three column layout with text frames seems to have a bigger space. Settings are checked ... can't find anything...
    I used a Myriad Pro, 10 pt
    An ideas? I can send a screenshot vie mail if wanted/needed.
    Cheers
    Stefan

    Sorry this reply is a bit late, but I was looking for a solution to this same problem myself.
    I got this fault also when using the previous version of Pages on Tiger, but it also occurs in Pages '08 as well and on Leopard.
    I have done some checking, and it's not Font. I have a booklet I make every month, and it usually has Times for body text throughout. Some text will have this weird spacing, other text will be normal. It only happens if I use anything other than 'Exactly' for line spacing. It doesn't seem to happen at all in a text box, but text directly on the page is random with this.
    It also translates to a hard copy too, so it's not just a display issue either.
