i changed nothing to the configs of the oc4j-container.

Here is what I found with a quick google of PermGen
OutOfMemoryError  PermGen - After Several Redeploys
http://wiki.caucho.com/Java.lang.OutOfMemoryError:_PermGen_space
The quick anser is that it seems to be associated with deployments. Trying to increase heap space may alleviate problem. Also, you didn't mention but I would bet you have JDev on this so with SOA Suite, DB and JDev, you are consuming a lot of the 2GB memory.

What options have you selected when you set-up WebLogic?
You can increase the PermSize and MaxPermSize parameters of the JVM to avoid java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: PermGen space.
These parameters can be set in the setDomainEnv file.

  • Java.lang.OutOfMemoryError and PermGen errors

We are getting outOfMemoryErrors and cannot find the cause. Does anybody know how to solve this? Every day we get OutOfMemory and PermGen errors, and nobody seems to be able to solve them. This is from our logs:

    Hi Tlwi and Marc,
Im facing the same error in my environment. This is an Oracle Application Server which hosts a J2EE envionment. The application works fine without any issues, but all of a sudden the following error comes up and stalls the application. I have to restart the conatiner to handle the situation, but this is not the solution.
Based on my searching it reveals that this error does not mean that the jvm is running out of heap space instead it uses some memory outside the heap to unzip the zip files.
Can you let me know on the solution that you had applied or what can be done to fix this as i have enough heap space.

  • Running Multiple JVM's on same Server has OutOfMemory - PermGen Errors

I have a scenario where I have 2 application servers. One is running one JVM and the other is running multiple JVMs.
    Both are configured with:
    -XX:+UseConcMarkSweepGC
    -XX:+UseParNewGC
    -XX:MaxPermSize=256m
    -XX:+CMSPermGenSweepingEnabled
    -XX:+CMSClassUnloadingEnabled
The server that is running with only 1 JVM runs stable, however the server that is running multiple JVMs has frequent crashes due to OutOfMemory - PermGen errors. The only other difference is the Heap size. 512mb for each JVM on the app server with multiple instances and 1GB for the server with 1 instance. Is there a relationship/settings that need to be tuned when running multiple JVM's on the same server to avoid this?
    Thx

The only other difference is the Heap size. 512mb for each JVM on the app server with multiple instances and 1GB for the server with 1 instance. This isn't a trivial difference. Basically you're saying "When I give the server 1 GB then it's okay but when I give it 512 MB it's not okay." If I saw those symptoms I would take them at face value to start with.
So, turn off one of those servers on the machine that has two. Don't change anything else. Testable prediction: That won't fix your problem.

  • Things to keep in mind while programming to avoid heap and permgen errors?

I some time get Java heap error and permgen error in my project which is having large code base i.e 2500 java lasses.
I know about two jvm parameter which we can set to deal with for java heap we can -Xms 1024 -Xmx 1024 and for permgen we can set -Xmx:permgen 256m.
That also sometime does not solve the problem. I am looking forward if we can do something proactively while programming the application so that we can descrease the probablity of facing such issues. here is my understanding
Permgen error can occur either at serverstart up or at application run time. I can think two main reason for this:
    1) More the classes will be loaded more spaces will be eaten in permgen area.
    2) Too many reference of static variable in application (as they gets also stored in permgen area). Agreed it wont make much difference. Probably millions of variable can make difference.
3)Too many string literals used in application.
So while programming we can take care of points 2 and 3 if we can avoid them. Looking for some other solutions also which we can keep in mind while programming to avoid these situations(For both permgen and java heap out of memory issue). Could not come up if we can follow any proactive approach for not facing java heap out of memory issue?

    JavaFunda wrote:
As per understanding app server should unload the classes as soon as we stop the server.Well, if you stop the server then it'll definitely unload the classes. Or unloading might not be an accurate term.
Basically what we do is undeploy and deploy. That's not stopping the server. Unfortunately most of the app servers do require restarts, since they can't get rid of all the crud.
Is your program doing significant dynamic class loading? Not sure how can i get information about thisRead up a bit on dynamic class loading and see if it looks like something your program is doing a lot (probably not).

  • PermGen errors on Storage Nodes

    The error in itself is....
    OutOfMemoryError: PermGen space
This occurs simultaneously on all storage nodes after the cluster has been up a number of hours. Cluster is configured as partitioned and actual data size is only being reported as about 12Mb through RTView.
We're running 3 storage nodes at 4096mb each and 3 proxies of 2048m. We are NOT specifically setting the PermSize (i.e. not setting -XX:PermSize=).
    Coherence Version = 3.5.3
JVM is Hotspot 64bit on windows server 2008........
    java version "1.6.0_21"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_21-b07)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 17.0-b17, mixed mode)
Machine is an HP blade (8 core [16 core with Hyperthreads] and 24Gb memoy) so we are way off the limits in terms of object data storage.
Possible fixes - we are going to set =XX:PermSize=512m and probably move to JRockit however I'd like to know if anyone has experienced this and how they fixed it.

Edited by: Kunal on Jan 23, 2012 8:55 PMThis can be caused by a few things, but JVM implementation most likely will not make a difference (except JRockit may give you something to diagnose this with), although someone mentioned a bug which was JVM implementation specific and was causing PermGen OOM.
You should get some memory snapshots at the time of OutOfMemory (look up the documentation for the exact JVM option).
Afterwards look at how many instances what classes sit in the Perm generation (I believe, Visual VM should be able to help you with this), that may give you more information on what is polluting the perm gen.
It may simply be too many classes loaded (increase this to a sane value, I saw JVMs used in production which needed around 80-100Mb PermGen). Half a gig seems to be too much.
Other things which use PermGen is intern()-ed Strings. There are a few libraries which used a horrible and what is worse, unbounded amount of intern()-ed strings, there was at least one XML processing library suffering from this.

Increasing PermGen size doesn't solve problem at all. Source of the problem is related with class loader. After you web app is undeployed class loader can not unload all classes from PermGen memory. This leads to extra memory consumption after every undeploy, deploy cycle. Make sure every class can be released and undeployed after undeploy.

  • OutOfMemoryError  PermGen - After Several Redeploys

    Hi-
We get an "OutOfMemoryError PermGen" error after several redeploys on 10.1.3 OC4J (full install w/ ias on Linux, Java 1.5). We don't have any special memory config, other then to specify a max size of 2G.
The thing is, we have always had this error from release to release, platform to platform. It seems like there is a limited number of times you can redeploy before you run out of memory. Is it possible that redeploying causes a classloader to hold on to class instances, even after that application is removed or redeployed over?
Have others seen this issue? Is there a workaround? I'm sure we could somehow specify a larger then default PermGen space, but it seems like given the behavior, wouldn't any PermGen space be filled?
Thanks for your help and suggestions.

    Eeverman:
As far as I know, oracle oc4j team have been addressing this problem of PermGen memory leak with redeployment or restarting of applications. This problem is indeed not easy to do away with. I would suggest that you file an oracle support tar so that it can be formally addressed again, from yet another perspective, your perspective.
The immediate cause is, of course, somewhere a reachable object is still holding a strong reference to an object of a class loaded by the discarded classloaders even after undeployment of an application, preventing garbage collection of the class and its classloader.

  • Error while step-by-step debugging

    Hello,
This problem happens to me quite often, but not everytime.
On Windows XP, SP2, I develop an application which is deployed onto a JBoss 4 server through IDEA IntelliJ 7.
I launch my server through IntelliJ too, using the jrockit-R27.4.0 - 1.6.0 VM.
The application is a web based application using Wicket.
When I attempt to do step-by-step debugging, quite often, the stepping is very very slow. Then, after usually 2 steps, I receive this message:
ERROR: transport error 202: connect failed: Connection refused
ERROR: JDWP Transport dt_socket failed to initialize, TRANSPORT_INIT(510)
JDWP exit error AGENT_ERROR_TRANSPORT_INIT(197): No transports initialized [../../../src/share/back/debugInit.c:690]
The application has requested the JVM to exit with an fatal error from JNI. Error message:
JDWP No transports initialized, jvmtiError=AGENT_ERROR_TRANSPORT_INIT(197)After which, I cannot use this server anymore, I have to kill it and restart it (which annoys me, as I chose JRockit to avoid the PermGen errors that the Sun VM had when redeploying 2 or 3 times the application on the JBoss server)
Any idea what this is due to? Or how I could solve it?

I'll try to reproduce the issue with a small java app instead of JBoss.
From the environment point of view:
    IntelliJ 7.0.2 (build 7549)
    Compiler: Sun Javac for JDK1.5.0.12
    OS: Win XP, SP 2
IJ connects to the VM using socket (but errors also happened with Shared Memory connection, although the error message was different)
    cmd /c "C:\Program Files\jboss-4.2.1.GA\bin\run.bat" -c default

  • OBIEE 11.1.1.6 Install Issue

    Hi,
I am installing Obiee 11.1.1.6 for a company. Initially thought of going with and "Enterprise Install" so that I will have the option to scale out the system at a later stage if needed. But my installation fails everytime. Below are the things happened to me till now -
    1) Tried installing it from the path \bishiphome\Disk1\install\win64\setup.exe as my machine is a 64 bit one. But this installation fails with permgen error. Tried a lot of options to after increasing the heap size and all but it didn't work. Hence I tried the installer from the path \bishiphome\Disk1\setup.exe (which is kind of a universal installer). This installation worked successfully for me and I have been able to work on this environment for 2 weeks now. We did the ldap authentication which works fine here. We created new charts and stuff which works here. But today when I created MUD setup, I noticed that there is no option called "Merge Local changes".
    2) I created an SR with Oracle just to confirm if the universal installer is correct. They doesn't confirm it and infact they ask me if it is working correctly for me. Hence I am in a state of dilemma and worried about my QA and production installation. We need to go live in next couple of weeks and I am stuck with installation. Here are my options -
Simple Install - I can do this and this will work fine but is it ok to do this in QA and Prod env's? How many users does this install support? For me, its aorund 150 users and if it supports them then I can go for this.
Enterprise Install - Correct install (win64) is not working.
Software Only Install - I can do this but I am not sure if we have a valid license for the Weblogic Server. I don't have a direct contact over here and so not sure how I can find out this.
Please suggest how I should proceed here. Can I go with a simple install which is kind of the only option in front of me now? :-(
Any immediate help would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Binish

Software Only Install - I can do this but I am not sure if we have a valid license for the Weblogic Server. I don't have a direct contact over here and so not sure how I can find out this.
Please suggest how I should proceed here. Can I go with a simple install which is kind of the only option in front of me now? :-(
Any immediate help would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • Jnlp jvm-args for MAC OS X

    Hello guys,
maybe its a simple problem, but i have it ;) . My javafx 1.3.1 applet starts with the jnlp below without any problems. But on a MAC OS X 10.6 it dont work. Without the java-vm-args -attribute, it will start, but the applet runs into an "OutOfMemory.PermGen"-Error, so i need the attributes to rise the size. Can anyone help me ?

You are not alone in this issue...actually I didn't know that JavaFX 1.3 applets work on MAC ;)
You'll have to migrate to JavaFX 2.XX and wait for the JavaFX runtime on MAC

  • * IBM Websphere Vs Oracle's Weblogic server *

IBM Websphere Vs Oracle's Weblogic server
Can ODI run on IBM Websphere?
How feasible is it to shift ODI from Oracle Web logic to IBM Websphere?
What challenges , efforts required in ODI code to do so?
    Please suggest.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Regards,
    Dinesh.

    1. Well for your 1st question I believe you can.
    2. I believe it will go fine because you just need one application server to deploy your ee agent.
    3. I have never tried IBM websphere as an application sewrver in ODI but it shouldnt be that much completed as you are thinking. Better you do R&D in your local system. Also I am not sure about the issues you will face in future. ( for ex maple PermGen errors, issues in clustering etc)
    Thanks

  • Unable to start weblogic with JRockit

i am using a 32 bit machine to start weblogic server on JRockit JVM. Doing this in order to have already installed Oracle SOA suite and when I start weblogic using JRockit it is Running out of memory. Tried the solutions given in the forum but not able to resolve this issue.
Also when using jdk getting permgen error. Tried with resetting the maxPermSize value etc in the startweblogic server but not able to do so.
For JRockit OOM has any one faced a similar issue?
Can any one help me with same ?

Thanks Carlos. The value was getting overridden in startweblogic.cmd for Sun jdk but was not sufficient for my problem as I was using Jrockit and with JRockit there is no Permsize issue inturn there was OOM.
    I followed these steps:
    1. changed maxpermsize in startweblogic.
    2. Tried increasing system swap space.
    3. Used a profiler which controls JVM running, tried reduce memory leaks, but none worked.
I switched to JRockit for weblogic
    1. tried increasing memory etc. Finally I switched to 64 bit machine as suggested in one of the forums for JRockit oom.
Now both jdk and JRockit weblogic with all SOA components working successfully.
    Thanks,
    Dipti Karnataki

I think you should consider increasing heap size and check whether you still face the OOM. In addition to that you can consider implementing GC logging using: -verbose:gc -XX:PrintGCTimeStamps and other parameters..
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/gc-tuning-6-140523.html
You can consider implementing -XX:HeapDumpOnOutOfMemory or capture heap dump using jmap etc and check out the contents in the heap using MAT to understand the possible suspects.
    https://blogs.oracle.com/alanb/entry/heap_dumps_are_back_with
The above are the basic stuff that needs to be looked into to understand the cause of this issue.
    Cheers!!

  • Business Rules: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError

I am trying to use Oracle Rule Engine in a BPEL process. I created 3 rules and got the following error:
    exception on JaxRpc invoke:
    start fault message:
Caught exception while handling request: Caught exception while handling request: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: PermGen space
    :end fault message
Where can i add more memory to the rules engine?

I posted the same question on:
    PermGen - Error
and got one first answer.... propably the solution will be there.
