Permission and authentication problems

My main account had Filevault enabled (it had been that way for some time) and I had wanted to disable it for some time, but kept getting errors telling me I couldn't do so. I decided yesterday to try and do something about it, and found out from an Apple Info Doc that I basically had to copy my Home Folder somewhere else, make a new account, and copy all the stuff there.
While logged in to the account, I copied (using the Terminal "cp -R") everything in my Home Folder on to an external drive I have (I wanted to keep invisible files so I didn't want to just drag and drop). I made the new account, copied everything over ("cp -Rf" to replace everything) and I'm having some permission issues.
(I did run "Repair Disk Permissions".) One of the more annoying problems I'm having is that I can't put anything into the Trash without entering my password: "Finder requires that you type your password", "Right: com.apple.desktopservices", "Application: Finder". On top of that I have a few more minor issues, but I'm guessing if I can find out how to fix this one I can figure out how to fix the rest.
Any help is appreciated.

  • File permission and ownership problem

I am trying to resolve some file permission and ownership problems that are left over from using Migration Assistant to set up my iMac from an older iMac. In a terminal session when I use the ls -l command I'm getting a file/directory owner of 504. Sometimes the group is admin and sometimes the group is also 504. I think this is because the owner of the file on the old computer is not present in the new one but I want to be sure before I just change the owner and group.

The following should give you an indication->
    id -un 504
    or you could try->
dscl . list /Users UniqueID | grep 504  && echo "User exists" || echo "User does not exist"

  • Will TM-restore just recreate permission and disk problems I was having?

My tale of woe, that of course happens the day before I need by machine for a meeting:
Last night, when I ran check permissions, and then repair permissions on my MacBook Pro, I got the message that permissions could not be repaired. After this, I made my first and only Time Machine backup.
This morning, I could not start-up my MacBook Pro. I just got a blue-gray screen containing a spinning wheel and a progress bar that got to maybe 10% (the progress bar was not numbered) before shutting down. I tried a few more times, but the same thing happened.
I was able to run Verify Disk using the Snow Leopard install disks, but when I ran Repair Disk, it could not repair, and indicated that I must reinstall the OS.
However, I was able to use a Firewire cable and Target Disk mode to get some recent files off of the MBP, which suggests to me that the hard drive is okay, and it's just something with permissions, and/or other disk errors.
I'm trying to figure out how I can restore my system (including settings) without restoring the same permissions errors and disk errors that seemed to have caused this problem in the first place.
My time machine backup was made AFTER the permissions problems. Does this mean that if I do a clean install of Snow Leopard, and then try to restore my system from the Time Machine back-up, that I will end up restoring those permissions errors and disk errors that I had before?
(I also have an older bootable clone (made with Carbon Copy Cloner) of my hard drive from a couple of months ago, but I assume it would be the same issue - that it would recreate the old errors.)
Any help or suggestions would be much-appreciated!

No. Permissions aren't the problem, some sort of directory corruption is. And since Time Machine backups are done file-by-file, rather than disk-sector-by-disc-sector, the exact condition wasn't copied. But if the problem prevented something from getting backed-up, there might be missing or incomplete items.
Your best bet is to boot up from your Install disc again, select Disk Utility again, but this time use it to reformat your internal HD. See #1, especially the yellow box, in Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks. That will only take a few moments.
Then quit Disk Utility, return to the Installer, and install OSX. When your Mac restarts, use +Setup Assistant+ to transfer everything from your backups, per #19 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). That will take longer, of course, depending on how much data you have.
When your Mac starts up again, download and install the 10.6.4 "combo" update. Info and download available at: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1048 Be sure to do a +Repair Permissions+ afterwards.
Once this is sorted out, continue making regular backups! You might want to review the Time Machine Tutorial and perhaps browse the rest of the FAQ.

  • Screensharing authentication problem and weird solution

OK, I've been having the Screensharing authentication problem that crops up regularly on this forum.  Accidentally I found a very weird solution.  I want to know what's going on and to let others know of the solution.
Let's say my laptop account is called 'london' and I want to connect it to my tower account called 'paris' on the LAN.  I browsed the network for the tower, click 'connect as' and in the dialog box I put in "Name: paris" and "Password: xxx".  I click 'connect' and I am connected as the registered user 'paris' and I can browse all of the disks.  File sharing is thus working normally.
Now I click the 'share screen...' button and I get another dialog box into which I once more type "Name: paris" and "Password: xxx".  This yields an authentication failure message, which many users will be familiar with.
By accident instead of typing the name and password for the account on the distant machine, I typed into the dialog box the name and password of the local machine:  ie. "Name: london" and "Password: yyy".  Much to my amazement the screensharing works.  What is going on?

No, the username on london is london and on the machine paris it is paris.  However, the passwords are different.
Just to be clear, I first connect to the remote machine's file sharing using the remote machine's username and password (ie. in the normal fashion).  I then connect screensharing but give the local machine's username and password in the dialog box.
Before I made this discovery I had created a couple of fresh accounts on the remote machine. One was glitched, while the other functioned properly (ie. screensharing required the remote machine's username and password).  The bizarre fix worked for my original account.  I have not tested it on the new accounts for fear of screwing things up again.

  • How do I bind to directory server with SSL and authentication?

I'm running Lion Server 10.7.3, Open Directory master. In Open Directory/Settings/LDAP, I've checked the box to Enable SSL and selected a (self-signed) certificate. In Policies/Binding, I've checked the box to Enable Authenticated Directory Binding.
Testing with a client computer on which Snow Leopard has been freshly installed and fully updated, I went to System Prefs/Accounts to bind to the new directory server. The good news is, the binding was successful, and when the client initiates an AFP connection with the server, it uses Kerberos, creating a ticket as expected. (Which doesn't work with Lion clients, alas, but that's a seperate matter.)
    Here are the problems:
    1) It looks like the binding did not use SSL. By which I mean that when I opened Directory Utility and examined the LDAPv3 entry, the SSL checkbox was not checked. (If I then check the box, everything looks fine until I restart the client, after which I have a red dot. So I'm guessing that checking the box does nothing until after restart, and that it breaks the binding.)
    2) I was never prompted to authenticate for the directory binding.
So I get that literally I'm *enabling* SSL and Authenticated Directory Binding, but it seems like the defaults are to bind without SSL or authentication, and there's no obvious-to-me way to force the binding to use those things. How do I do that?
What I'd really like to do is *require* SSL and Authenticated Directory Binding. I want this because my belief (correct me if I'm wrong) is that if authentication is required to bind to the server, no one will be able to bind to my server without my permission, and that SSL offers a more secure connection to my server than not-SSL. How do I require these things, or do I not really want to?
    Thank you.

  • SQLNET authentication problem!

    Hi,
We have a setup in which the database server is running on a 'XXX' domain and all the clients are running in domain 'YYY'.
On the client, if following is the setup, then the clients face ORA-03113 after around 45 to 90 minutes of idle time.
    SQLNET.ORA
    NAMES.DEFAULT_DOMAIN=YYY
    TNSNames.ORA
    DBName.YYY = (..........
Note: This is not happening with all the clients in 'YYY' domain.
Now, we thought this was a domain authentication problem and removed the DEFAULT_DOMAIN setup from the client. Still the client faces ORA-03113.
As a part of trial, we moved one of the machines which was facing the problem to the domain of the database server and the error is gone.
But, due to obvious reasons, it is not possible to move all the clients to the domain of database server.
Is there any way to get around this problem?
Why is it that only some of the clients are facing this problem?
Why is it that the error occurs only after idle time and not during work?
Do we need to set NAMES.DEFAULT_DOMAIN=XXX at client? (I apologize for this question but I am really confused with the matters now)
Addition info: The database server is Oracle 10.1.0.2.0 and clients are ranging from Oracle 8.1.6 to Oracle 10.1.0. And the errors occur on clients with any version of Oracle.
Please help us out in this regard.
    Thanks in advance,
    Satish

I have gone thorugh the Action suggested for this oracle error.
If problematic machine is shifted to the domain XXX, error is gone,Do you shift physically to some other network?? if yes then there might be a problem with your network. The machines which are disconnected, might be on the same network channel or switch which is creating some problem in your network. this is only luck that your failure occur when there is no activity from that client which is disconnected.
Shift the places of problem facing client and non-problem facing client with each other and then check. It will clear the mind about the netrowk problem

    Web Service Authentication problem
Posted: Jun 17, 2005 3:32 PM        Reply      E-mail this post
    Hi
I have created a portal service and exposed this service as a webservice. I am consuming this webservice in webdynpro. Portal service contains 2 simple methods putdata() and getdatat().
When i access the webservice i am getting the following error.
"javax.xml.rpc.soap.SOAPFaultException: The User Authentification is not correct to access to the Portal Service com.sap.portal.prt.soap.GlobalData or the service was not found"
My Enterprise portal server is configured for SSO to back end R/3 system. I have checked for portal service availability and it is fine.
My Webdynpro and Portal are running on different machines. EP is running on AIX with SP11.
    Any help please.

    Hi Shahab,
Can you reproduce the issue if you create 2 applications. One that exposes a secured web service and the other one the one, consumes the web service? This would help to isolate the issue and move forward in case is a bug.

  • Mail and iPhoto Problems with sending photos.

Mail and iPhoto Problems with sending photos.
I have this problem that started a while ago and seems to be getting worse.
    Here are the different scenarios.
-If I try to share a photo to email within iPhoto, it will insert the image file name in the mail message, but no image icon or opened image. In iPhoto Preferences under General I have chosen to use Email Photos using Mail.
-If I choose to use iPhoto to send the photo, it will compose the message and the photo is viewable. If I send the message i can view the photo within the email I sent to myself. Nothing happens when I double click on the photo in the Mail message. Nothing happens when i control click on the photo in the mail message. Nothing happens when I try to drag the photo to the desktop from the mail message. When I try to save attachments from the email and choose a place to save it, the save button is grayed out and it cannot be saved. When I check the mail message it says there is an attachemnt but there is no file size listed.
-If I use the stationary within Mail app I cannot drag a photo into the placeholder, I get a circle with a line through it symbol when I try. It happens if I try to drag a photo from the desktop or from the media browser within Mail app.
-If I drag the photo to the desktop from iPhoto, I can double click it on the desktop and it will open in Preview.
-If I then control click on the same photo on the desktop and scroll to share/email, the generic photo icon will be inserted in the mail message. If i double click the photo icon in the mail message  I get a message it can't be opened because it is empty.
-If I drag that same image to the mail message body the same thing happens.
-If I send that email to someone they cannot open the image file.
    What I can do:
    - I can drag that same image file on the desktop to my dropbox folder and  it will upload. From there I can go on my iPad and download the photo and send it through email just fine.
-I can open the same image file on my desktop in Preview, I can copy and paste it into a mail message and the image will be viewable in the mail message by me and by the recipient.
-I can drag that same image on the desktop to my safari browser window and it will be viewable in the page. i can then copy and paste that image into a mail message and it is viewable in the message.  I can then send that email message to myself and i can control click on the image and get all my options. It also shows as an attachment with the size of the image file in the mail message.
I can send that message to someone and they can see the photo and open it fine.
-If I send that same email to me I can see the photo within the mail.  If I then drag that photo to the desktop I cannot use it again to put in an email as the same problem happens again.
I have tried all scenarios in my user account, another users account and in a guest account. The same happens in all. I am guessing because of this it is not a corrupt preference file, unless all of the preference files are corrupt. The guest user account I added a new email account so it was brand new and still had the problem.
I am stumped, all and any help is appreciated.

Another problem that may be related….
I have Snapz Pro. I used to be able to save the snaps to my desktop or a folder. Now when I take a screenshot and try to save the file to my desktop or a folder on my desktop I get this message  "Files cannot be created in the selected location. You do not have permission to write to the selected location.   Please choose a different location."  I have found that i can only save the file to the clipboard.   I have repaired permissions many times and still I have this problem.

  • Authentication problem - solved, but maybe a bug in Mac OS X?

    Hi,
I've a rather small installation with only a handful of users configured on a Mac mini (Mac OS X Server, 10.6.8). All of them use the mail, calendar and addressbook server on the Mac, nothing more. They use it with Mac, iPhone and iPad. Everything worked fine for months but suddenly all of them were faced authentication problems: it was not possible to login on the imap server, the calendar server, the addressbook server. It was possible to login using the admin account on the server directly. Moreover, all users disappeared from the workgroup manager, however they still were available on the servers LDAP server and findable using ldapsearch.
First, I used to completely restart the server to solve the problem, but it reappeared after only few hours again.
Second, after understanding more about the authentication process, I found the "killall DirectoryService" was sufficient to solve the problem, but it still reappeared after few hours.
Then I found the, once the problem occured, there was nearly no more communication to the local LDAP server on port 389 on localhost. When everything was working fine, the was a lot of such communication, including queries for usernames, when a login attempt was made. I started a "tcpdump -n -i lo0 port 389" and waited for the problem again. After the problem occured, I found in the pcap files that there were a few final query attempts, actually attempts the open a port 389 TCP connection to the slapd running on localhost, which were answered with a TCP RST. Then, no more attempts were made until l restarted the DirectoryService. Using the logfile of the slapd I found that this happened exactly at the time the slapd was stopped and restarted. And - surprisingly for me - stopping and restarting the slapd happened exactly once an hour.
I then found that it happened exactly at the time the time machine backup process was started and indeed it was possible to trigger the event of restarting the slapd by manually starting a time machine backup.
(Indeed, I switched my backup strategy from SuperDuper to time machine the other day and maybe that was the time the problem occured for the first time. I know that time machine is not considered as the best backup strategy for a server but I wanted to try on my own.)
Google helped my to find a hint that time machine will actually stop and restart slapd - which is a generally a good idea, since otherwise a backup from some open database files would be made, which could work but may fail. So, I thing, someone of the developers thought about that problem too and has considered time machine for backups of a server.
However, a not running slapd can not answer queries from a DirectoryService and a stopping or starting process might indeed end up with TCP SYNs answered with TCP RST.
My solution was to disable time machine again and from that time the problem does not occur again.
I'm wondering why the DirectoryService process isn't starting to query the slapd again after a failed connection. Isn't this a bug? After this experience I consider time machine as not only the not preferred backup solution for a server but as completely incompatible with Mac OS X server - although, as I said, it seems that someone thought about backing up the LDAP database using time machine.
(On a Lion server this problem does not occur, the slapd will not be stopped and restarted when time machine is running. Moreover, I saw a com.apple.slapd.start notification in the slapd.log ... maybe this tells DirectoryService to try again.)
    Cheers,
    Wolfgang

  • Wifi Authentication Problem in Lenovo K900

    Hi,
I am able to connect to wifi at home network. And when I try it at office it is showing Authentication problem and "Not in Range". The password and everything is correct. All my colleagues are able to connect with the same password. I searched online for the solution and there are many other lenovo tab and phone users facing the same problem and I am unable to find the solution. Can anyone resolve this issue and give appropriate answer for this.

This is the first time I'm hearing this issue, I'm also an K900 user but this never happmed to me or my other friends.
Are you sure that's the right password, maybe its case sensitive, because this bug is not present in K900.

  • Cisco ISE AD (Windows Server 2013) Authentication Problem

    Background:
Deployed two Cisco ISE 1.1.3. ISE will be used to authenticate wireless users, admin access to WLC and switches. Backend database is Microsoft AD running on Windows Server 2012. Existing Cisco ACS 4.2 still running and authenticating users. There are two Cisco WLCs version 7.2.111.3.
Wireless users authenticates to AD through ACS 4.2 works. Admin access to WLC and switches to AD through ISE works. Wireless authentication using PEAP-MSCHAPv2 and admin access wtih PAP/ASCII.
    Problem:
Wireless users cannot authenticate to AD through ISE. The below is the error message "11051 RADIUS packet contains invalid state attribute" & "24444 Active Directory operation has failed because of an unspecified error in the ISE".
Conducted a detailed test of AD from ISE. The test was successful and the output seems all right except for the below:

Log on to Cisco ISE and WLC using AD credentials. This rules out AD connection, clock and AAA shared secret as the problem.
    2)     Tested wireless authentication using EAP-FAST but same problem occurs.
    3)     Detailed error message shows the below. This rules out any authentication and authorization polices. Before even hitting the authentication policy, the AD lookup fails.
    12304  Extracted EAP-Response containing PEAP challenge-response
11808  Extracted EAP-Response containing EAP-MSCHAP challenge-response for inner method and accepting EAP-MSCHAP as negotiated

    4)     Enabled AD debugging logging and had a look at the logging. Nothing significant and no clues to the problem.
    5)     Tested wireless on different laptos and mobile phones with same error
    6)     Delete and add again AAA Client/Devices on both Cisco ISE and WLC
    7)     Restarted ISE services
    8)     Rejoin domain on Cisco ISE
    9)     Checked release notes of ISE 1.1.3 and WLC 7.2.111.3 for any open caveats. Nothing found related to this problem.
    10)    There are two ISE and two WLC deployed. Tested different combination of ISE1 to WLC1, ISE1 to WLC2 etc. This rules out hardware issue of WLC.
    Other possibilities/action:
    1)     Test it out on a different WLC version. Will have to wait outage approval to upgrade WLC software.
    2)     Incompatibility of Cisco ISE and AD running on Microsoft Windows Server 2012
Anyone out there experienced something similar of have any ideas on why this is happening?
    Thanks.
    Update:
    1) Built another Cisco ISE 1.1.3 sever in another datacentre that uses the same domain but different domain controller. Thais domain controller is running Windows Server 2008. This works and authentication successful.
    2) My colleague tested out in a lab environment of Cisco ISE 1.1.2 with Windows Server 2012. He got the same problem as described.
This leads me to think there is a compatibility issue of Cisco ISE with Windows Server 2012.

Does anyone know if ISE 1.1.3 p1 supports AD DCs running 2012, if not which patch is required ot version?
Worryingly when ISE joins a 2012 DC it states it's connected successfully, and if another 2003 DC is available in that datacentre it will perform the auths against that DC whilst actually advertising (Connections in the GUI) that it's connected to the 2012 DC. We ended up mapping 8 PSN IP’s to another datacentre which has one Win2003 servers whilst the old 2003 DC is being promoted back, the 8 ISE servers started working, even though they still advertised they were connected to the 2012 DCs in the original datacentre - I performed a leave and join on one PSN and only then did it advertise that the node was connected to a DC in a different datacentre

  • Cisco ACS 4.2.1 authentication problem

We are using cisco ACS 4.2.1 on windows 2003  to authenticate  with windows 2003 Actice Directory. We have update Active directory server windows 2008 version. We have checked the configuration of ACS on windows database and no problem but we can't see in ACS dynamic user. I have authentication problem ACS 4.2.1 to Windows 2008 R2 active directory.

    Hi there,
There is a section in the ACS 4.x where you can define if the ACS should show the dynamic users or not, make sure that this option is unchecked, for this go to External User Databases/Unknown User Policy/Configure Caching Unknown Users
Also if you are facing authentication issues with ACS 4.x and Windows 2008 R2, you may want ready my previous answer.

Universal Password wasn't set. But it is because it works with MSChap as
    the authentication method.
I've applied all the Microsoft KB patches for WiFi I can find listed
here in the listserv. Even the one that you have to submit to MS to
receive 923154. I've set supplicant mode to 3 in the registry. I'm
    really at a loss.
I'd just love to have the Novell Client do single sign on to our WPA
protected wireless. Any advise is greatly appreciated. I see some of you
have it working with minor problems. Can you help this long time Netware
user since 2.X in college get it going too?
    Thanks in advance.

Addendum: I've got it so if I log into Workstation only, it will
authenticate using the Novell MSCHAP. It just won't authenticate with
the Novell Client so that I have a single sign on.
The error from the client changes but most of the time I get - "802.1X
Found no connections to authenticate" Sometimes I get "802.1X
Authentication failed. Timeout waiting for Authentication to finish.
    Logging into workstation only."
If I set SuppliantMode to 3 it also won't even authenticate when I log
in as workstation only. If I delete that key it will at least work at
    the workstation only.
Again I believe I've applied all KB from Microsoft. Did I miss something
    simple? HELP, Please......

  • WiFi Authentication problem

I have an iMac, and iPad, a Blackberry (forgive me) and Airport for my WiFi all of my pieces are working fine with my WiFi.  I had guests over the other day and we could not allow my guests iPads or iPhone to sign onto my network.  I bought my dad a generic tablet to use for solving cross words, etc., and I cannot sign into my own network.  No opportunity exists to put in a password because it just reads "Authentication Problem".
No opportunity exists, therefore, to enter the password.  Signal strength is excellent, Securty is WPA2 PSK, I touch connect and it says Saved Secured with WPA2 and then goes back to "Authentication Problem."
I've unplugged (and plugged back in) both the Airport / router and Internet Service provider's modem. I've rebooted my iMac and the new generic pad 3 times each.
I had 2 networks one for me and one for guests, can't get into either, identical problem. I can see all of the neighbour's networks and they're all locked and say secured with (various WPA/WPA2, etc., just mine says Authentication Problem.  I plugged the tablet into my iMac and it's functioning well.
I now deleted the guest network and can't open a new network.
I've triple checked my passwords, hand written and in the Key Chain.
I've checked my Apple ID (I'm able to get into this forum).
Both my iPad (purchased May 2013) and BlackBerry (received free July 2013) signed in without any problems.
I cannot see why I can't get into my network ~ any ideas?

    Hello,
Hmmm..."problem"...pretty hard to understand. Can you provide more details? What exactly do you try? What exactly happens at each step of what you try? What is the exact and complete content of any error messages presented?
