Permission craziness after upgrade

I have been encountering strange behavior with permissions after my upgrade from Panther to Leopard
using archive & install. After a reboot, I got stuck at the blue screen while trying to reboot. Going thru Apple's guide sequentially, I finally got the machine to reboot by going into single user mode and do a "chmod 1775 /". Once in, I tried to be nice and went into Disk Utility and do a repair permissions. But then when I try to restart, I got stuck at the blue screen again.
So after a couple of cycles of this, I am now convinced that Disk Utility somehow screwed up my disk permissions which resulted in me not being able to login. Anyone out there encountered anything similar? And any ideas what's going on?
Paul

What you're gonna do is make a "Shared" folder in your Users folder. The User Folder should be in your Macintosh HD. You won't be able to create a new folded WHILE you are in the Users folder in Finder. What you have to do is create a new folder on the Desktop named "Shared". Have the finder opened so you can drag and drop the "Shared" folder into the User folder. It will likely ask you for your password and once done, it should work.
I would have iTunes closed at the time of this process. Then go ahead and open it. I had this problem for about a week before I figured it out. Works fine now.

  • Permission problems after upgrade to 10.5 on early Power PC G5 Tower

Permissions problems after upgrading to 10.5 on a client power PC (early) G5 tower.
Problems include folders that are created on XServe via this client do not allow any one else including this client to access. All other clients running 10.5, which happen to be newer Intel machines do not have this problem. Repairing permissions, updating to 10.5.1, try to manually correct permissions have all failed to repair the situation. All clients log onto the XServe with the same user/password. This client has since been downgraded back to 10.4.9 and has no issues.
The Xserve runs 10.3.9, any help would be greatly appreciated.
We have read through the forums regarding permission problems after upgrading and even tried some tips found here.

You really should check things out first before speaking.
    Here are the requirements for 10.5;
Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard requires:
A Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or Power PC G4 (867 MHz or faster) processor
    512 MB memory or more
    A DVD drive for installation
9 GB of available disk space or more
Some features require a compatible Internet service provider, fees may apply.
Some features require Apple's MobileMe service; fees apply.

  • External disk space gone crazy after upgrade to SL

    Hi,
I have just upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard, and am now running 10.6.3. I have an iomega 320GB external USB hard disk which I use to back up via Time Machine, and also to periodically back up a virtual machine which is not backed up by Time Machine. Prior to upgrading, there was about 3GB of space on the iomega drive, the TM backups were taking about 251GB and my virtual machine backup was taking the remaining 66GB.
The first time I connected the iomega drive after upgrading to SL, I wanted to deleted the backup copy of the virtual machine (66GB), so I navigated to it in the Finder, right-clicked on the folder and selected "Move to trash", whereupon it duly disappeared. (I thought it slightly odd that I didn't hear the drive making any sound – I thought I should be able to hear it pysically deleting the file.) I then tried to copy a new virtual machine file of smaller size onto the iomega drive, and got an error message that there was not enough disk space. I selected the drive in the L/H pane of the Finder window and hit Cmd-I to get info: this told me the following:
    Capacity 319.73GB
    Available 1.89GB
    Used 317.84GB
I know that the files I just deleted from the iomega were around 66GB, so why isn't there at least 66GB of free space? I have not run Time Machine since upgrading, so there is no way the TM backup set can have somehow expanded to fill up the additional space. I have run Disk Utility and tried repairing the drive, but this has made no difference. I then selected the Time Machine backup set on the iomega drive, which is a folder named "Backups.backupdb", and hit Cmd-I to get info. The get info window popped up and said it was calculating the size of the item. Some six-and-a-half hours later, it finally concluded its calculations and told me that the backup set is... wait for it... 4.54TB! (4,458,364,261,372B to be precise...)
What is going on? I'm aware that SL uses a different basis to measure disk space, but this does not explain where 66GB of freed up space has suddenly "disappeared" to, or why this backup set appears to be 14 times the physical size of the disk it's on!
Am I going to have to erase the drive and lose all my previous TM backups, or is there some other way around this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Rob

After you selected move to Trash, did you remember to then empty the Trash? When you move something to the Trash the Finder puts it in the invisible Trash folder of the drive in question, and there it stays until the Trash is emptied with the drive mounted.
I have many crackpop theories about things, and one of them is that Apple has somehow messed up the Finder's ability to calculate sizes in the newly rewritten Snow Leopard Finder. Mind you, Finder has not been very good at doing this for a very long time anyway, but it seems to me it has gotten even worse. Nonetheless it should be able to get an answer that makes sense using the GetInfo function for a drive, although it will take longer than it seems to me it ought to do (but in the range of minutes rather than hours). Thus GetInfo on my Time drive shows
    Capacity 249.93GB
    Available 140.95GB
    Used 108.97GB
A result returned remarkably quickly (for a change). Using the disk usuage command in Terminal, where the results returned are shown in the "old" size format rather than the new PR influenced format, shows this:
    NoobiX:~ francine$ sudo du -cxhd 1 /Volumes/Time
    Password:
    1.4M /Volumes/Time/.fseventsd
    1.5G /Volumes/Time/.Spotlight-V100
    0B /Volumes/Time/.TemporaryItems
    0B /Volumes/Time/.Trashes
    0B /Volumes/Time/.vol
    5.4G /Volumes/Time/Applications
    77G /Volumes/Time/Backups.backupdb
    7.6M /Volumes/Time/bin
    0B /Volumes/Time/cores
    0B /Volumes/Time/dev
    0B /Volumes/Time/home
    7.0G /Volumes/Time/Library
    0B /Volumes/Time/net
    0B /Volumes/Time/Network
    510M /Volumes/Time/private
    5.2M /Volumes/Time/sbin
    3.8G /Volumes/Time/System
    3.8G /Volumes/Time/Users
    1.0G /Volumes/Time/usr
    4.0K /Volumes/Time/Volumes
    100G /Volumes/Time
    100G total
Terminal takes a bit of time to return the above results, but again it is in the range of some minutes, not hours. If you DID remember to empty the Trash after moving the files to it, you might try running the du command in Terminal to see where the stuff is.
Copy and paste this into Terminal
    sudo du -cxhd 1
press the spacebar, then drag and drop the mounted volume into the Terminal from the Desktop. Press return, enter your admin password (which is not echoed to the screen in any way whatsoever), press return again, and go have a cup of coffee while the sizes are calculated.
Finally, the repair disk function in Disk Utility is not particularly robust. To truly repair a disk with siginificant problems you need something like Disk Warrior.

  • Permission issues after upgrading to 10.6

I recently upgraded to OS X 10.6 and tried to install Mathtype 6.0a. After accepting their license agreement, the installer just disappears. Design Science has verified that 6.0a does work on 10.6.
I dug around and found a log generated from the crash of the installer (its copied below). I am a little new to digging through Mac log files so if anyone sees a red flag, please let me know. To solve this problem I have tried all manner of reseting/repairing permissions (e.g. Disk Utility, resetting user directory permissions via the Reset Password utility on the DVD, and terminal commands (chown) etc). I have also tried the creating a "clean" user and installing from that account. Also I have Rosetta installed. Nothing has worked.
Also I recently tried installing Move Networks media player (used on NFL and ABC.com to stream their content). Installation of their plugin also fails. But I found a solution to this problem here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1181642&start=15&tstart=0
Maybe these are both completely unrelated. But why after doing everything to repair my accounts permissions does, for instance, the Move Networks player fail to install?
I have no idea what else to try for these two problems. Coming from years of dealing with Windoze, I learned to be extremely cautious of doing OS updates without doing a complete wipe and clean install. I thought that with OS X this would be different... right now the only thing I know to do is completely wipe the harddrive and try a fresh install.

Appreciate the support. Well to update, I have downgraded to 10.5 by doing a complete wipe and fresh install. Its unfortunate that I had to do this, considering its a Mac.
At any rate, I am still having problems with MathType, although, good news, Move Networks media player installs just fine on a fresh install of OSX.. ugg.. But since the MathType problem persists under 10.5 I will move my conversation there.

  • Going crazy after upgrading to ios 8.0.2.

Please tell me if need to adjust my settings or what? Since upgrading to IOS 8.0.2, my iPad prioritizes my cellular service over WiFi service. I have to physically turn off cellular service before the iPad will even recognize a WiFi connection.  Then I have to reboot the iPad to get the WiFi to work. I have to do this every time I move the iPad to a new location. The WiFi will work for a little bit after I reboot, then the iPad freezes up completely, or I lose my Internet connection, or both. So I have to reboot the iPad again. Meanwhile, my battery is draining at an alarming rate. I used to be able to go 10 hours before recharging. Now it will only last a couple of hours. I have had to reboot my iPad 5 times today. Can somebody please tell me if you have similar issues, or if I have a setting wrong somewhere, or what? I was completely happy with my IOS 7 version. Can I go back to it?

    FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port.
DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note:
    1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
    2. You must follow step 1 to step 4 VERY CLOSELY.
    3. Repeat the process if necessary.

  • Permission problem after upgrade of iPhone

    Hello,
I just upgraded iPhone 5s yesterday to the newest software version and since then cannot connect it to my macbook pro it gives me an error "you don't have permission to access this iPhone" but I his "Trust" every time it asks me, every time I reconnect.
    I hit continue in iTunes
and I hit Trust on iPhone. I restarted both devices few times. Nothing helps.

    Hi there ebaqdesign,
It sounds like you are getting an error message whenever you connect it to iTunes saying you dont have permission to access it, even though you tap Trust when it prompts you. I would start by resetting the phone while it's unplugged from the computer:
Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
You should reset your device as a last resort and only if you can't restart it.
To reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
Then test the issue again. If it persists, I would next backup the phone to iTunes or iCloud:
How to back up your devices using iCloud or iTunes
Then I would use Recovery Mode to re install the iOS on the phone. Choosing update rather than restore will not compromise the data, but the backup is there just in case:
Connect your device to a computer and open iTunes. If you don't have a computer, you can borrow one, or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Providerfor help.
While your device is connected, force it to restart. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. Don't release when you see the Apple logo. Keep holding until you see the Recovery mode screen.
When you get the option to restore or update, choose Update. iTunes will try to reinstall iOS without erasing your data.
iTunes will download the software for your device. If it takes more than 15 mintues, your device will exit recovery mode and you'll need to repeat steps 2 and 3 again.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • Permission Error After Upgrade

I just upgraded to Leopard and now I'm having problems with iTunes 7.6.2. I think it is a new version with Leopard? Anyway, I can't play any songs or movies I downloaded through the iTunes store. It tells me there's a permission error and i have to authorize the computer. And if that doesn't work, I have to deauthorize the computer. When I try to do either, it won't let me! It gives me another error. Has anyone else had this? Is there anyway to fix this???

What you're gonna do is make a "Shared" folder in your Users folder. The User Folder should be in your Macintosh HD. You won't be able to create a new folded WHILE you are in the Users folder in Finder. What you have to do is create a new folder on the Desktop named "Shared". Have the finder opened so you can drag and drop the "Shared" folder into the User folder. It will likely ask you for your password and once done, it should work.
I would have iTunes closed at the time of this process. Then go ahead and open it. I had this problem for about a week before I figured it out. Works fine now.

  • ITunes stopped recognizing my iPhone after upgrading to Leopard.

I recently upgraded from Tiger to Leopard, and iTunes (8.0.2) stopped recognizing my iPhone while iPhoto still works with my iPhone (I was able to download photos from my phone using iPhoto).
    What's going on?
It's crazy! When iPhoto recognizes my iPhone, either iTunes or iSync doesn't reads the phone. It doesn't even give any error messages.
I did every solution I found on the net. Repair permission, Remove Local folder in Library.. etc..etc.. none of them worked.

After upgrading from Tiger (10.4.x) to Leopard (10.5.0=>10.5.6), my iPod Touch is no longer recognized by iTunes 8.0.2. The iPod Touch no longer appears in iTunes' "source list" (left side pane in iTunes' GUI).
Immediately prior to that upgrade, my iPod Touch was working great with Tiger (10.4.x). iTunes 8.0.2 recognized it (listed it in sources) and always synchronized with it successfully.''
My iPod Touch is also not shown in the Finder. However, it does show up as recognized in iPhoto.
Any ideas on how to get the iPod recognized again in iTunes under Leopard?

  • After upgrade can no longer connect to Mac from Windows

I have a wireless network (Linksys) with 2 iMacs, Ubuntu Linux and Windows XP workstations. I have file sharing between the Windows and Mac computers. After upgrading I can no longer see the shared folders on the upgraded iMac from the Windows box. I cannot even ping the iMac by node name, but I can ping it by IP address so it is recognizable on the network. I cannot connect by IP address, however.
I have file and printer sharing enabled on the Leopard iMac. What can I do to restore the former connection?

Thank you! That partially solved the problem. I can now see the Leopard Mac and can open my user folder on it. However, the subfolders give an error saying they are not accessible - permission denied. I have gone through the folders and set all of them to Shared, but this did not make them accessible.

  • After upgrading to Windows 8.1 firefox longer works. I got it to load but screen is either blank or doesn't go to target address

after upgrading to Windows 8.1 from 8 nothing works correctly. Firefox 1st received 'unable to load XPcom' After resetting and uninstalling several times Firefox now loads to either a support screen or blank screen. It accepts address input but doesn't execute to target. So far I have been unable to roll back upgrade.
Although IE11 works, it doesn't work correctly.

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

If you keep having problems then do a clean reinstall and delete the Firefox program folder before (re)installing a fresh copy of the current Firefox release.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    *Firefox 24: http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all.html
Uninstall your current Firefox version, if possible, to cleanup the Windows registry and settings in security software.
*Do NOT remove personal data when you uninstall your current Firefox version, because all profile folders will be removed and you lose personal data like bookmarks and passwords from profiles of other Firefox versions.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    *(32 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\"
    *(64 bit Windows) "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\"
*It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.

Your bookmarks and other personal data are stored in the Firefox profile folder and won't be affected by an uninstall and (re)install, but make sure that "remove personal data" is NOT selected when you uninstall Firefox.

  • I Tunes for WIndows wont start after upgrade to 8.0.1

I recently upgraded to iTunes 8.0.1.11. After upgrade, if for some reason I need to reboot my computer iTunes will not start. It took forever to finally figure out what it was. I couldn't sync my iPod, could not get on to iTunes , etc. I finally had to try to uninstall Bonjour to make it come up. The problem is that I can never fully uninstall Bonjour. It says I do not have sufficient privileges. It will be ok until I have to reboot again or turn off my computer. I then have to try to uninstall bonjour to make it come up again. Is there a fix for this bug so I don't have to go through the same procedure every time I reboot?

As far as the sufficient privileges go.
You may wish to temporarily disable User Access Control (UAC)
This should then give you permission to complete the uninstall process like you have been doing. Also ensure you are an Administrator user on the account. That right away will cause the message to appear if you are not.
You want to ensure this gets turned back on if you do not have adequate security protection such as
    -Firewall Software
    -Anti Virus Software
    -Spyware/Adaware Software
To Turn UAC off in the easiest way possible
    -Launch Control Panel
    -Launch User Accounts
In this Window you will see an option called "Turn User Access Control ON/OFF" Click on this. A simple pop up window will appear. If it has a check mark in the box. Un-check it. Reboot. UAC is now off.
Windows security will notify you of this. Feel free to ignore it while you try to uninstall again. Repeat the steps above to turn it back on when you are ready.
By any chance have you tried a Basic Uninstall of Apple Software? and then Run the iTunes Setup file in Administrator Mode?

  • Graphs not working after upgrade to 11.1.1.6 - MBean Error

    Hi,
I am facing one wierd issue after upgrading from 11.1.1.5 to 11.1.1.6. When I run a report with graph, the result shows some garbage value. None of the graphs work - even the pie chart. When I logged in to EM and looked into the log file, it seems to be an Java Error related to MBean browser configuration and privileges.
The error log is as follows:
    Message
    MBean operation access denied.

Which parameter/attribute permission do I modify in EM/Console to get the graphs working? Is there something that needs to be modified in System MBean Browser configuration?
    Thanks,
    Ronak Shah

    Hi,

  • Page Forward & Reverse buttons do not work & are "grayed-out" after upgrading to, as is the Main-Menu Items such as File-Edit-view etc...

After upgrading to Firefox 3.6.12 all functionality appeared to be intact. Then after a few days it lost the ability to "page forward" or to "page back" and are "grayed-out". Additionally, the Main menu items such as File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools & Help are also grayed-out and non-functioning.
Also, the "Search Window" does not search, Web Searches need to be performed from within the URL window instead, for some crazy reason. If the URL window is blank when I enter a search into the actual search window the following appears in the URL window, "Search Bookmarks and History", which makes no sense.
I have noticed similar complaints in this Forum in the past but I have not seen any posted resolution to these issues. Is there a solution?

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.<br />
See [[Basic Troubleshooting#Make_a_new_profile|Basic Troubleshooting&#58; Make a new profile]]
There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins"
If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)
    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox
