Permission Problems with Leopard & Time Machine are ridiculous!
I just had a hard drive die in a MacBook. I installed a new drive and restored from TM.
Only to find out I have absolutely no ownership to anything in my home directory.
System & Admin -r/w, everyone r --- no where is my id mentioned as having ANY r/w access.
Leopard has been a disaster on 2 out of 3 Macs I've installed it on.
If I wanted this kind of crap I'd use Windows full time.
You'll need to reset permissions on your home directory. Follow these steps:
1) Boot from your Leopard install CD/DVD (insert it, shut down, start while holding "C")
2) Choose your language.
3) When the menubar appears, select Utilities>Reset Password.
4) In the window that appears, select your boot volume (by default, "Macintosh HD") from the list at the top.
5) In the popup menu below the volume list, select an affected user. (One that you used "Apply to enclosed items" on).
6) Click the "Reset" button at the bottom of the window. This will reset the permissions (and ACLs) back to their default settings.
7) Repeat Steps 5 & 6 for every user on your machine who has this problem (except "System Administrator (Root)").
There is one bug in this process, so you need to take some additional steps to get permissions back to how they should be.
8) Log in to an account you reset the permissions for.
9) Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal)
10) Copy the blue text in, and press "return". chgrp -R `id -gn` ~
11) You won't see anything happen, but you can check that it worked by selecting your home folder, and clicking File>Get Info. You will see either "unknown" or "staff" under "Sharing and Permissions", depending on how you installed Leopard. Either one is fine.
12) Repeat the steps 8-11 for every account that you reset permissions for on your machine. (Remember, NOT "System Administrator (Root)").
Good luck!

HT201250 Unexpected problem with Mac time machine!
Hi every one!
I'm having an unexpected problem with my time machine! the moment I hook up the back up drive my Mac crashes and the only thing I can do is to force restart. I'm not sure if the problem is with the back up disk or the Time Machine itself. I've successfully used the app since now and this just happens! I can neither access the disk in finder nor fix it by disk utility... would you please help me?
PS. the disk is encrypted, I doubt that might be causing the problem?!
Thank you!
chargarLaunch the Console application by entering the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Enter the name of the crashed process in the “Filter” text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any -- the text, please, not a screenshot.
Then, still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash logs related to the process. Select the most recent one and post the contents -- again, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) -
My Time Machine says there is no backup disk available. I've never had any problems with my time machine completing backups. I was away from house with my laptop for about 9 days so I'm wondering if there is something I need to do now that I'm home to get it working again. I'm not technologically savvy, so if anyone can help, I'd appreciate it!
Thanks,
JanaYou can lose your ability to backup through TM for any number of reasons, but the most common is what happens after a update. If your drive still works, your best approach is to read this:

The attached link contains helpful graphics, so don't worry if you're not tech savvy. -
Privilege problem with old Time Machine backup
There are all kinds of posts about privilage problems, but I can't find my answer. I did a clean install of Snow Leopard, and now I want to only drag my iTunes library and iPad backup files from my time machine backup onto the computer. I can access all the files on the backup drive, including MobileSync and my iTunes folder, but when I try to pull them off the drive I get the terrible message "The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access “MobileSync”." The sharing & permissions for the folder say "read & write" for my user, and the "Locked" box isn't checked in the Get Info window. When I click on the settings gear in the Sharing & Permissions window, the "Make me the owner" option is grayed out even after I unlock the options. I tried resolution for issue 1 here. And I also tried those terminal commands to no avail. When I access Time Machine from the dock, all the backups prior to my reinstall are listed, but I can't access them. Anyone have any other ideas? This is extremely frustrating. Note: I am able to copy over files from the backups created after I reinstalled Snow Leopard.
sudo chflags 0 /Volumes/Volumename
sudo chown 0:80 /Volumes/Volumename
sudo chmod 775 /Volumes/Volumename
sudo chmod -N /Volumes/VolumenameI personally think that Time Machine is a magical process run by unicorns.
I just moved from a MacBook Pro to a brand spanking new iMac 27". My iPad just does everything that I need a laptop to do, and an iMac is so much more powerful than a MBP.
Anyways, I setup my new iMac with the MBP Time Machine backup, as I usually do with new Macs. As I was going to sell my MBP, I was just going to use my 3TB Time Machine drive on my new iMac, thinking that I'd lose 9 months of backups, as I usually do with a new Mac. Except, apparently with Mountain Lion, the unicorns and wizards have decided that the old Time Machine backups are now transferred to the new iMac. So, even though my iMac is only 15 days old, it shows 9 months of backups. Which was a lifesaver, because an important photo got corrupted in the restore process, and I found it in the Wayback Machine.
Cool stuff. -
When is Apple going to fix the problem with slow Time Machine backups with Mavericks?
I have been with Apple tech support and they got my Time Machine working by doing a spotlight re-indexing and a safe boot. This worked for about three days and I am back to very slow backups. It is impossible for Time Machine to back up every hour when it takes six hours to do the back up. I don't want to take hours to re-index with spotlight all the time. I think taking six hours to do an incremental backup is a bit much. I see that there are many people that have this trouble and it all started with an upgrade to Mavericks. The question is when is Apple going to fix this problem of slow backups with Time Machine for Mavericks. I have wasted more time than I care to. I am think of going back to Windows. I need good solid backups of my machine and Apple has taken it away with the new Mavericks. Oh, I am using the UBS 3.0 connection so the drive should not be the problem. Also this has occurred in about the last five months, so I am not sure this problem was in the original Marvericks.
Allen Thanks for your reply. All I can say is several months ago Time Machine quit working in a reasonable manner. Right now I have a Time Machine backup that has been running all night and still has three hours to go to backup 6 GB of data. I am using a OWC 1.5 TB drive connected directly to my MacBook with a USB 3.0 connection. In the resent past I have added Dropbox, GoogleDrive and a MAMP server on which I am using a program called Learning With Text from Sourceforge. There have been a lot of questions on the forum about people having very slow Time Machine back ups, so it appears to be a general problem. I should also state I am getting this very slow backup after doing the Spotlight re-indexing and the Safe Restart procedure that was told to me by apple support. I have a 750 GB drive in my MacBook Pro which I am constantly trying to keep at a 5% level of free space. This might be a problem also. However, I am working on a lot of things and like to have a lot of things on my drive. Also the heavily loaded drive has not be a problem in the past. This slow backup business started about three months ago, so something has happen in a very short time period. Now it seems even the procedure that Apple support gave me is not working. Currently I am in China and it is difficult to interact with Apple support to solve this problem, but because I am in China having my computer backed up is critical. I have run the EtreCheck and am attaching the results below. I would appreciate any suggestions. If necessary I will clear out more of my hard drive if that appears to be a solution. The Time Machine drive was recently reformed so I only have a few backups on it. I also don't run the Time Machine all the time as I don't want multi-hour backups running all the time. I run it every few days.

Problem with encrypted Time Machine
First of all: forgive me for my english.....
I installed Lion a month ago and I encryped the partiton on an external Hard Drive that I use for Time Machine (TM). The HD has three partitions:
1) for TM;
2) a copy of the Macintosh HD made with Carbon Copy Cloner;
3) an NTFS partition with some Windows data.
For the first month everything works good but a week ago I pluged in my HD and it requested me the password for the encrypted volume (TM)...I typed it in but it said that it wasn't correct....so I can no more open my backups...
Now every time I connect the external HD there is a message that say "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" with three oprions "Inizialize, ignore, eject".
After that it request me the password but it say that is not correct...
In the Partition menu of Utility Disk there is this message: "Disk Utility cannot modify this disk because it contains CoreStorage physical volumes. Use command line diskutilinstead".
Can anyone helps me??Call Applecare (800-275-2273), but I think you may have lost access to that drive.

Can't start with Snow Leopard Time Machine backup in Lion
Hi,
I have seen coverage in MacWorld (http://www.macworld.com/article/161421/2011/07/migrate_time_machine_backup_to_ne w_mac_in_lion.html) of using my Snow Leopard Time Machine backup as the starting point for my Lion TM backup. This saves all my revision history of all my documents and makes them available in Lion. However, when I follow the steps given in the MacWorld article, I don't get the same set of dialog boxes and am never given the option to use a previous disk.
Any hints to getting this to work would be much appreciated.
-EricA whole lot about Time Machine for help with TM problems. Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM. See also Mac 101- Time Machine.
Pondini's Time Machine FAQ -
After reformatting my 1 Tb WD ext drive and tinkering with the "exclude these items" list, I now get the following error message from Time Machine: "Are you sure you want to back up to the same device your original data is on?" I've reformatted in Disk Utilities...not sure what I did wrong. Any help would be appreciated.
Not sure what you mean by "booted" from it.
If the Mac OS is installed on the external drive, then it's possible to start up from it, just as you do from your internal drive. Please open the Startup Disk preference pane in System Preferences, and verify that your internal drive is selected as the startup disk.
Assuming that's the case, then it may be that your TM settings have been corrupted. Turn off TM, then move or delete the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist. Turn TM back on, recreate your settings, and try again. -
I encountered a problem with some client machines that use Firefox version 24ESR and IE8.
Ajax requests of aspx pages from Firefox are getting the following error from the iis server (iis version 7.5):
Bad Request - Request Too Long
HTTP Error 400. The size of the request headers is too long.
From analyzing the request that was sent to the server, I saw that the request consist of only the viewstate of the aspx page.
I tried to disable the viewstate for one page and the server got the request correctly.
I do not encounter any issues on these laptops with postback requests from Firefox or when running the same application with IE8.Sometimes that means that the page address sent is loo long.
Check the link address you are using.
I can't help you further and will send for more help. -
I want to set up the Time Machine and I would love to use the Time
Capsule but since I already have a wireless router I need suggestions on
what other
external disks Apple could recommend to use with the Time Machine and
how to configure that disk.
A complication that I need to resolve is the fact that I am using Vmware
Fusion to be able to use Windows on my Mac. Now it seems that Time
Machine is not backing up my files
on that virtual Windows without additional configuration and my question
is whether you can advise me here or whether this is only a matter for
the Fusion virtual machine. If you want to use Time Capsule you can.. you simply bridge it and plug it into the existing router.. wireless can be either turned off or used to reinforce the existing wireless.. eg use 5ghz in the TC which is much faster than your 2.4ghz.
You can also use a NAS.. many brands available but the top brands are synology, qnap and netgear readynas series. These will all do Time Machine backups although how well always depends on Apple sticking to a standard. There are cheaper ones.. I bought a single disk zyxel which was rebadged and sold through my local supermarket. It actually works very well for TM at least on Snow Leopard. Major changes were made in Lion and again ML so do not instantly think it will work on later versions. I haven't tried it yet with those versions.
Any external drive can be plugged into the mac. Use the one with the fastest connection or cheapest price according to your budget. USB2 drives are cheap and plentiful. But no where near as fast as USB3 or FW800. So just pick whichever suits the ports on your Mac. Interesting Apple finally moved to USB3 on their latest computers.
TM should exclude the VM partition file.. it is useless backing it up from Mac OS side.. and will slow TM as it needs to backup that partition everyday for no purpose.. TM cannot see the files inside it to backup just the changes.
You need to backup windows from windows. Use MSbackup to external drive.. if you have pro or ultimate versions you can backup to network drive. But MSbackup is a dog.. at least until the latest version it cannot restore the partition without first loading windows. There are about a zillion backup software versions for windows.. look up reviews and buy one which works for you. I use a free one Macrium Reflect which does full disk backups and is easy to restore.. to do incremental backups though you have to pay for it. -
Hi There,
Need your assistance on the issue that we are facing in prod environment.
We are able to open web console from remote machine and able to view monitoring pane as well as my workplace folders from console . Able to view and access alerts and other folder in the monitoring pane. We are able to view and access My Workplace folder
and able to view the reports in Favorite Reports folder. But when I click on run Report we are getting the below error "500 Internal Server Error - There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed."
In our environment we have 3 servers one is SQL server and two are SCOM servers. Please advise how to fix this issue. Do we have to do any thing from SQL End?

After clean install of Snow Leopard, Time Machine did not restore all files. When I try to restore these files I get "Not enough disk space" error. What do I need to do to get these important files back onto my Mac from my external hard drive??
Janet.b wrote:
About 3 years old...pretty dated now I guess. Am thinking I may just need to have it upgraded by a Mac tech.
For what the Apple Store's charge you can buy almost buy a new computer.
Just for giggles I brought my old laptop in for a drive upgrade and asked, they wanted $600 for a drive that only cost $120 at the time and it was a slow 5,400 RPM drive. The new Mac's of a similar make were going for $1000.
I did the drive replacement myself, got a faster drive of better quality for $300 instead.
Then another time I asked for a RAM upgrade from 4GB to 8GB, they wanted to charge $400 + $35 for the labor.
The same RAM is on Crucial.com for $90 and all I need is a 00 micro phillips screwdriver.
So you see what's going on here.
I think what you should do, if your out of warranty/AppleCare, is to call up the local PC tech guy who also does Mac's and have them fix you right up.
They can offer more personalized care which you need. Clone your old drive to the new and everything.
With Apple they are overworked at the Genius Bar and just place roadblocks so you buy a new machine instead.
For instance, all new iMac's now have proprietary drive software installed on the hard drives for heat monitoring. So now the only choice a user has is to bring their iMac into a Apple Store for a very expensive drive upgrade, which a person then decides the money is better spent buying a new machine. -
I have bought a WD My Book World Edition to use for back-up of my iMac, but when I try and log onto the drive with Apple time Machine (back-up software) or connect in any other way I get the message 'There was a problem connecting to the server "MybookWorld.local" The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. Please contact your system administrator to resolve the problem'
It is a brand new iMac and running Lion OSX
Any ideas on how to solve would be gratefully received?Followed the directions on this page and it worked!
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1102423
Part One - Turn on SSH (in the admin panel)
[1] Go to to http://mybookworld.local
[2] login: username will be admin, password will be whatever you have setup. If you can't remember it should be in your Mac OS X keychain (Utilities > Keychain Access, search for "mybookworld"). If you have not changed if from the default the password will be admin as well.
[3] Switch to advanced mode.
[4] From the System tab, pick Advanced.
[5] Enable SSH Access, and click submit.
[6] Click on the network tab and then the LAN button
[7] Make a note of the IP address
Small, maybe obvious, but nevertheless important point: For the install to work, your NAS needs to be connected to a router with internet access.
Part Two - Install netatalk2.2
[8] Open Terminal.app (Utilities > Terminal)
[9] Enter the following command (substitute in 127.0.0.1 for the actual IP address you noted down in step 7), then hit return:
Code:
ssh [email protected]
[10] When prompted, enter the ssh password (will be welc0me).
[11] You are now going to download the installer. Enter the following command, then hit return:
Code:
wget http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/local--files/netatalk2-2-on-whitelight/install_netatalk.sh -O install_netatalk.sh
[12] Once completed, you will need to run the installer. Type:
Code:
sh install_netatalk.sh
[13] You will be asked a number of question during install, answer yes to all. When asked about the "DHX2 login process", I opted to install the modified version, so I can confirm it works.
[14] Once the box has restarted, you should be able to connect to your afp shares and continue to use Time Machine. -
Some files in Time Machine are being locked
I run Mountain Lion 10.8.4 on a Mac Mini 2012. Over the past year or so (dating back to my older iMac mid-2010, after which I transferred the data to my current Mac Mini), I've noticed that most of my files in Time Machine are getting locked. The files on my Mac are not locked, but the backed-up versions of the files are locked. The icons have a padlock icon on them. This is NOT due to the "auto-lock documents" feature, since this no longer exists in Mountain Lion.
For instance, my Firefox profile is a good example. Here are two screenshots:
1. Screenshot of my Firefox profile. Everything looks fine.
2. The same profile, except the latest Time Machine backup.
These locks appear in every single backup I have, up until the oldest one. I ran "Repair disk" on Time Machine, which took about 30 minutes, and then made another backup, and this time the newest backup did not have any locks—but all the older backups still had locks. I found this a bit strange, because why would a backup I made AFTER running "Repair disk" be fixed, but the older ones remained unaffected?
Anyway, I hoped that this would fix the problem, but every time I do this, a few weeks later, the problem re-occurs.
So, is there anything more permanent that I can do?Hey man,
Some things I'd be looking at trying is:
---> Reset ACL's
Boot to Recovery -> Utilities -> Terminal
Then enter the following command to open the Reset Password Utility:
resetpassword
Then select the volume (normally Macintosh HD)
Choose the user account in the "Select the user account:" pop-up menu
Click Reset (ignore all the 'enter new password for user' sections and just click reset at the bottom after selecting the volume and the user
Once that is done, quit Terminal and the Reset Password Utility
Open Disk Utility
---> Verify/Repair Disk + Permissions
Click Macinosh HD on the left of Disk Utility and then click Verify Disk at the bottom right, if it comes up with green text in the white box saying 'The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK', then you DO NOT need to click Repair Disk, if it finds any errors, you should click Repair Disk
Afterwards, you should click Verify Disk Permissions, once that completes click Repair Disk Permissions (Click this regardless of what Verify Disk Permissions says)
Once that is done, I would follow HT2409 and do a Spotlight Re-Index
Attempt another backup and see how you get on

Digital Camera Connection Problems With Leopard
Hi Everyone,
I'm having a big problem with connecting various digital cameras to my macs. I have 3 different machines (a G5 iMac, 2 MacBook Pros) all running 10.5.1 or 10.5.2 and none of them will recognize my canon Powershot SD800 or my SD1000. I haven't had a chance to test it out with my Digital Rebel yet but I'm suspecting I may run into the same issue.
I've read through all the tech notes in the iLife section and various articles on the web and from what I can tell Apple has a problem with usb device connections in Leopard. I've tried all of the fixes (deleting caches folder, resetting PRAM, updating all applications, etc) and nothing works. The cameras were working fine under 10.4.11. I was really hoping Apple would have fixed this in 10.5.2 but it is still not working. Does anyone have any ideas if Apple is working on this? For photographers like myself this is a major deal. I can get around the issue right now using an external memory card reader, but that's extremely inconvenient at times and I'm just not impressed that something like this has gone months without a fix from Apple. And I'm not having any problems with Leopard mounting my Canon PowerShot Pro or Rebel though I typically don't connect them, choosing to use a card reader instead. (Saves camera battery.) This is true on the 4 computers I use at home and work as well as my wife's MacBook. Two came with Leopard pre-installed the other 3 I installed Leopard using Archive & install.
We can talk about how you upgraded to Leopard or what you have installed that might be getting in the way, or you can buy an inexpensive card reader and be done with the hassle.
